In 1991 the Eurovision was supposed to be hosted in Sanremo. However, when war erupted in Jugoslavia, RAI and EBU decided to move it to Rome to have a better security during the event.
This was rushed less than one month before, and they had to improvise many things, including the scenography, which was recycled from old movie sets.

It's no coincidence that Ireland & the UK went from being absolutely dominant to no-hopers as soon as the language rule was dropped in 1999.
When everyone was singing in their own languages, the English entries had a wider appeal because so many understand it as a second language. As soon as everyone else could sing in English too, we lost the monopoly and slowly gave up.
In the 22 contests since the change, only 3 non-English songs have won...

So the UK actually missed out on the official application in 1956, so they weren't able to participate that year :D
EDIT: Apparently the UK taking part in the first Grand Prix was just a myth made up by the Eurovision fandom. And I just read that the scenario that I just described in this comment did happen, but not to the UK. Actually Denmark and Austria missed the submission deadline.

The UK deliberately sent Clodagh (pronuonced Clo-da) Rodgers, as she's from Down, Northern Ireland. As the 1971 contest was held in Dublin (after Dana's win in 1970), she was sent to get a good reaction from the (Republic of ) Irish audience. But she ended up getting death threats and was branded a traitor by the IRA as she sung for the UK (the Troubles were at their height during this time). :(

Cheryl Baker was part of Co-Co in '78 before Bucks Fizz in '81, while Samantha Janus in '91 went on to star in TV shows, notably Eastenders. I think 2003 was the real turning point for us... downhill from then on. A emerging act with a great song next year is what we may need.

UK (and Ireland) did well in ESC when other countries were not allowed to sing in English. French was the other popular language in Europe and success was guaranteed. Nowadays most counties choose English to be understood better, but language does not play such an important role anymore.
For me the 1990s entries were dull and unimaginative - it was the decade when Eurovision almost came to an end and needed a push forward.

Love the fact you were vibing with UK 1977 with the dual pianos. One of my favourites. I feel like UK 1994 is underrated and the clip doesn't do the full song justice. Had a good beat, good voice and lyrics behind it. 2014 and 2005 were both robbed and deserved better.
As for how we can do better - I think we need to do what Italy, France have been doing successfully for a while now. Searching for songs across the entire spectrum of music, not just pop but punk, jazz, classical, electronic, indie, rap. We seem to have converged on a kind of Radio 2-ish sound which wins over neither jury nor televote; leaving us forgotten. We have a rich music scene. Imagine if the BBC used their links from Introducing, Radio1/1Xtra, Radio3, Radio6 and actually promoted a call for submissions across the board? We need that kind of approach. Maybe MÅNESKIN winning will tell the BBC that people don't want vanilla anymore.

I think Blue also did really well and Lucy Jones was good for me too. The UK has some world-class musicians that everybody loves. And they always have an entry that sings in their native language. To get back to winning, the UK just needs to send in whatever they actually like instead of doing the safest guess on what people from other countries would like. They must dare to be a bit edgier; if nobody would hate the song, nobody will prefer it either.

The worst thing about the people who have been picking our entries are obsessed with the years we won which most were either good for the time or just the best of a bad year. The irony is most of our actual best songs don't get much attention, hence why we asked Pete Waterman of all people to help out. Unfortunately our entries compete with some of Europe's best artists but our best artists are reluctant as they see it as either beneath them or career suicide. I'm hoping the quality of the entrees this year will change that perspective.

The first ESC was the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Germany & Switzerland.
It was a Swiss idea & they won. The Netherlands had the honour to preform the first ever song.
Ireland has the most wins; 7 times.
The UK has the most second places; 15 times.
There are several countries who are in third place like the UK with 5 wins.
The UK has hosted the most; 8 times.
In 2019 the Netherlands won after a non-winning streak of 44 years.
You commented on Italy, they also had to wait a long time, they even stopped competing for some years.
The Netherlands(& 3 others) were the first to score
Norway has come last more than any other country, 11 times, including scoring four times.
There are 25 countries that haven't won anything yet.
So firstly; brits should stop moaning about how bad they're doing & that everybody hates them, it's just not true.
Second, YES, you guys should send in more original stuff. Why not let the Scottish beeb try with a highland marching band? Or a Welsh choir. ANYTHING is better than the generic "dance" the bbc sends now.
I think that James's 2020 song would have done better than Embers. It was close to his heart. This year he wrote what he thought the ESC might like, that's not the way to go. Also the staging was terrible & who put him in that coat?
No, he didn't deserve the . But neither did the others, the top 3 simply hoovered up all the points.
If you want to see a story about wins, terrible songs & a comeback, look up the Netherlands.
Anouk has a sort of Adele status inside the Netherlands & she was determined to change the Dutch ESC participation. The difference between the utterly terrible 2009-2012 entries & "Birds" in 2013 is quite stark, to say the least.

Also, you asked for our favourites; i really like the Allisons for some reason, so cute!
I find it funny that a mr Carroll sings ring-ding, he preforms twice & they sound like christmas songs to me.
Save your kisses for me is a terrible song, well, not really, it's just such an earworm. It's probably my favourite UK entry, or the second from sir Cliff in 1973, borth are so 70s.

As for this year, UK's song was not bad, but the performance was not on par with the others. The singer was a bit off, and sounded out of breath. I think that's the problem.

I wasn’t making a comparison, I’m just curious to see what she thinks about Italy’s entries even if she honestly dislikes them, especially because I noticed the style is pretty different from the UK’s ones. @@dontreallyknow2746 Well if you're Italian you'll like more Italian styles as you are used to that, others may be more critical. She dismisses 80s music so that's obviously not her preference, so she doesn't like songs such as 82 and 84.

I was just going to say, when you reacted to Cliff Richard 1968(Congratulations) and your comment "is this why he became famous" - my jaw dropped a little...! Listen. I'm not a big fan of Cliff but in the late 50s he was absolutely the UK industry of the day,'s version of Elvis, our first ever rock'n'roll star. 'Move It', that he recorded in 1958 was really the first ever British rock'n'roll song czcams.com/video/k5mIq3yF6Nc/video.html He was INCREDIBLY cool back in the day. As the 60s progressed he was just sucked into the light entertainment industry of the day - but gosh, how cool, how handsome was he back in the day?
