- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Bobby Carter | June 16, 2021
From a rustic and retro-looking cabin on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, the band Men I Trust seized the essence of the Tiny Desk almost to a tee. The controlled, yet layered four-song set, bookended by tracks from 2019's Oncle Jazz would almost certainly make for a plug-and-play situation had it been behind Bob Boilen's desk.
Men I Trust was initially the duo of high school friends Dragos Chiriac and Jessy Caron, before adding vocalist Emma Proulx in 2015 and recording the group's debut album, Headroom. (They expanded to a quintet for this performance, with Cedric Martel handling bass and Eric Maillet on drums.) The song "Humming Man," performed here, was its first official single as a trio and they never looked back from there. The band's style sways between rubbery upbeat electro-pop and the muddy pace evident on last year's "Lucky Sue," but generally hits that sweet spot for anybody looking to be cradled and carried by a vibe-y groove. The overdubs and reverb on Emma's vocals are stripped away here, leaving a deceptively endearing quality to her voice. The band told NPR that this set was one of its first times playing together after a long hiatus due to the COVID-19 lockdown. "We reunited at the cabin, jammed and recorded our session," the members said via email. "We strived to capture the intimacy and coziness on sound and image. We hope you'll enjoy it!"

Men I Trust: 60% pure talent, 40% bad posture
it's hard to play and sing sitting down
@@stevejeffrey11 I mean, you don't play drums standing up, right?
HAHAHAHAHAH
hilarious!!! however ... they can do no wrong in my eyes.
Yeah 💀😭
Nobody understands how difficult it is to play drums this gentle
My exact thought the minute the video started with that buttery snare roll. Dude is playing soft but grooving hard, now that's a real drummer!
100% correct
That’s what I’ve been thinking about, how does he play them so gently. Most drummers I’ve met are loud asf without even trying
Thank god we've got you to educate us - otherwise literally nobody would understand!
haha compression goes *pssssssssssss*
They play so softly I bet the neighbors come over and yell "Turn it up!"
Yea, they give franny wisp a run for her money.

Finally! ;)
Agreed
guitars that sound like “wawawow” are the best kind of guitars
the best way to explain the perfect guitarist sound in three syllables
it's called pedals XD
you might be talking about a wah-wah pedal.
it's a pedal they use, called a "cry-baby' or wah-wah pedal. Jimmi Hendrix used it quite a lot and most funk bands. :)
Wah pedal
How come men I trust music fits for every season? In the spring it feels like the relief and clarity that comes with the first blue sky after months of congested gray. In the summer it feels like a slow relaxing day in the shade. In the fall it feels like the cool sunset after the burning heat of summer. And in the winter it feels like slowly falling asleep in a warm fluffy bed. how can a select few songs convey such different feelings?
Very good question. You described the magic of their music perfectly.
Magic 🙂
I'd say think less dog. Enjoy it don't let anything impact you having a good jam. 👍
Ah yes the burning heat of fall
@@hunterakins7082 my brother in christ, what season precedes fall?
Now that we got this masterpiece all we need next is The Marías to present a Tiny Desk Concert

I think i can be true friends with anyone who loves this group
Most Definitely...:)

The room is so their aesthetic
It looks similar to the den in my 1956 ranch. I sit there all day with a guitar sometimes, looking out the giant window.
Yes it’s such a perfect match ♥️ so beautiful

totally irrelevant.
their aestetic: logs and dirty tapestry i guess??
Men I Trust always makes me feel so comfortable. Musicians I Trust.
Agreed. Their music gives a calming ASMR effect.
I totally agree
Every time I hear "Men I Trust" I get the feeling I can die in peace. Even though things aren't okay, it's like they're going to be okay in the end.

And the bassist has Scoliosis

I have been following them for quite some time now and I cannot express how happy I am to see them play my favourite songs on Tiny Desk!

Serious props to whoever did the audio engineering on this - sounds so crisp, really adds to the performance for me
Josh Rogosin ;)
For real
thats because its an alternate studio master backing track
Emma’s voice is velvet personified
The bass slaps, especially in the first song
One of the best bass tones
All their songs are like this, they have an amazing bassist, listen to “Norton Commander” you’ll have an eargasm 😂
Came here to say this
It's usually Jessy, the guy on guitar, who plays the bass. I guess they got a new bassist to add a 2nd guitar and it sounds great!
I just want to point out that he is playing with a pick, so technically is not slap, but nice bass line nonetheles
Men i trust have one of the best bass sounds in this generation omg im in love with it❤❤
The drums so simple but important, the fleshed-out basslines driving the songs while guitar, keys and voice just feel like exploring space dreams
@@ortsanguitar2425 what a perfect description!
Yes that bass
what about thundercat
Based off the sound, I'm guessing it's flatwound strings + palm muting + using a pick. Nicolas Godin of Air gets that same sound.
They look like 5 random strangers that got locked in a music store without the manager noticing... for the entire weekend, and they decided to start a band to pass the time
Lemonade mouth
😂
Can you imagine how sublime it must be to hear Men I Trust & Khraungbin as a single concert?!?
Seen them in Bend Oregon together. That was the first time I ever heard of Men I Trust. One of the best shows I've ever been seen
yeah!!!!!!!
they could make songs together

Not all heroes wear capes (copied)
The mood that they set here is just superb, and they never let it go either, the entire concert. That's surprisingly unique in this eclectic world, especially after living through the "loud-soft-loud" era of 1990s rock music XD
"Show Me How" is one of those songs you listen to on the way home from a night out with the one you love
Now I know why she trust them.
The band that basically helped me keep sane this past few pandemic years. So glad to see them here!
YES OMG!!! same
Nothing like Men I Trust after almost going crazy
for real for real tho
Same here! The days that i felt the worst I just need to put their music and everything was better

the style of each member of the band fascinates me, to see that they are completely at ease and that everyone is in tune enjoying their own music is something very beautiful
They've got that rare and magical chemistry that's hard to find.
@@freethinker79 really, and the sound of this band enchants me

they all have degrees in some music field lol
Pure Vibin', its cool to see almost no trace of ego in these concerts.
Hard not to love this band. It's not normally my type of music but the bass in particular really elevates their music to something I can listen too.
right? it's like we all have our favorite and least favorite genres, but even when there's someone playing in a genre you're not super interested in, if they're reeally good at it it's still amazing
Bro same.
Yeah it's very in the pocket and funky-ish

The way it hits when she sings “Then I understand.” Does something to me.

My god - "Lucky Sue" sounds absolutely gorgeous live. Awe struck.
tbh I didnt really even like the original, but this live version is incredible.
I feel like a lot of this band's songs are a bit overproduced, very electronic with midi drums etc.
Their live versions are generally much better
bass sounds so good
I know right I keep replaying that chorus! I just love it so much.
@@karwashblark7499you must have been listening to headroom
Went down a tiny desk rabbit hole and stumbled upon this group. Looked up their tours dates. They’re playing in my town at this exact moment! I wish I came across this an hour sooner
In my mid thirties, I never thought I'd be finding my favorite bands! But here we are, Men I Trust and Parcels have taken the reigns from previous generations to hold the torch and lead us into a future that isn't so bleak. Shout out to NPR for the Tiny Desk series for keeping our heads above water when everything else in the world is out to get us.

Been waiting for this all my life
Indeed.
That guitar tone in Lucky Sue melts my brain, soooo nice
This vibe is a perfect mixture of muzak and indie rock. Super sweet.
I met Eric when I went to the wrong side of the building to see them play at Terminal 5. The person I thought was first in line for the show was happy to talk to me about how he practices: playing the same rhythms for hours at a time and working to involve the body in that movement, as well as where the inspirations for the songs come from (mostly written by the guitarist in black). I mentioned that the things he is playing are very sparse, and he agreed; He is classically trained, but sees his playing more as "fundamental" than "simple." I likened it to samurai who practice simple sword-draw techniques their whole lives, as perfecting these fundamentals is as important as complex playing.
Like a sushi chef too!
this band is a sunset incarnate.
That solo in All Night was amazing
2 years later, this is still my favorite tiny desk appearance, oh I miss the times when I was obsessed about Men I Trust 😢
What happened to them
this version of Humming Man is pure gold
I literally feel the same way at this very moment.
The 2nd half of the 2nd verse when that guitar lick comes in blows me away everytime.

It’s so cool to see them here, Ive only discovered them a week ago and I just can’t get enough of Men I trust
Welcome to the cult of Men I Trust.
Welcome to the club!
Best thing that happened to me was finding this band. Might sound nuts, but their music led me out of a dark chapter in life. I knew I deserved peace with each listen. I’m getting emotional here. Love the band and all my fellow fans!
Men I Trust feels like a flashback to a time I wasnt alive for, nostalgia that doesnt truly exist. Its like a mystery but it seems so familiar.
The extended All Night guitar work was sublime.
Love how they started off with Show Me How. Such a great song.
That is such a prototypical 1970's Laurentian cabin. Most Montrealers my age have dozens of holiday pics in cabins just like this one, nestled somewhere between St-Jerome and Mont Tremblant. Driving up north on the 15 in a cigarette smoke smelling Pontiac and stoping at the Dunking Donuts on the way are some of my most cherished memories.
This Tiny Desks fits perfectly with tgat mood
the first song I discovered from Men I Trust was "humming man" I still love it, what an amazing band.
this band is simply so underrated. Their talents are unmatched

This is the best band/group ever.
Found Men I Trust on Spotify... I cant describe how excited I was when I saw they had a tiny desk concert! Absolutely talented group! Not to mention how fantastic they sound live! Their drummer is on point I dig his drumming style, I think people don't realize how hard it is to play nice and clean like he does!
I love when drummers play like this. To make the song sound cool. Not to make themselves look cool
Yes their songs are not drum heavy but more melodically centered
is this the sound of heaven?
Huge fan of this band. I heard them for the first time last year, when a heavy consumption of new music was maintaining my sanity (only half joking!) during the initial COVID lockdowns. Perfect fusion of dream pop and city pop, with Emma's singing laying on top like a fog.
0:38 - *Show Me How*
Show me how you care
Tell me how you loved before
Show me how you smile
Tell me why your hands so cold
Show me show
I'm turning around

But then I understand
The friend I'm dreaming of is far away
But I'm here
I'm here
Show me how you're proud
Tell me how you reach the moon
My thoughts err away tonight
My heart fell to love again
Show me how
I'm turning around
I'm having visions of you
Then I understand
The friend I'm dreaming of is far away
Doesn't feel my love
But I do

3:38 - *Lucky Sue*
Had she lost another one
She would've end just like her son
Bitter man now turned insane
The day his dog took on the train
Had she lost another one
She would've end just like her mom
Dyed the hair to look as young
Inhaled fumes and spoiled a lung
By grace, she was spared
A few toes, enough
To care
Had she lost another one
Insurance lawyers would have won
Settle quick, the course was cheap
Didn't bother to go deep
I saw the home she's from
No place for one to hum
That pride so deer to some
She learned to overcome
Fate unearned
By grace, she was spared
A few toes, enough
To care
By grace, she was spared
A few toes, enough
To care
6:43 - *Humming Man*
Amid the gate, he stares at my door
How long did I see him stay?
Days or months, I couldn't say
Yet it bustles me, what for?
I swear I saw him moan
But my window's thick and cloudy
Won't disdain a sentry's duty
Fleeing my home for venture lone
Amid the gate, he stares at my door
How long did I see him stay?
Days or months, I couldn't see
Yet it bustles me, what for?
That drone haunts me from abroad
A middle tone, a new norm
A safe zone, applauding form
My yard is steep and deep, thank God
10:06 - *All Night*
You wrap my feet in coloured blankets
So I stay here all night
You keep the one with many moons and stars
It's always for my shoulders
So I stay here 'til waking hours
Tell me how do you make everything feel a little easier
So I stay here 'til waking hours
Who could ever be this good to me
I just can't help but wonder
You put a shirt on the ceiling light
So the room won't be too bright
You give me time to be what I can be
You're never ahead, never behind me
So I stay here 'til waking hours
Tell me how do you make everything feel a little easier
So I stay here 'til waking hours
Who could ever be this good to me
I just can't help but wonder
