The NHL's Board of Governors approved the relocation of the Arizona Coyotes to northern Utah Thursday, with the team set to take the ice next season. The move was the final step in a process that began making headlines last week.

While expected, especially after the league's executive committee approved the move Tuesday, the stamp of approval by NHL owners opens a new era for hockey in the Beehive State as Utah welcomes another professional sports franchise.
“As everyone knows, Utah is a vibrant and thriving state, and we are thrilled to be a part of it,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

The Utah Blizzard ? With a name like that they're nailed on to win the SC in a season or two. 👍🏆🏒❄
Utah Swarm would actually be pretty cool with a bee theme since it’s the beehive state
Not bad, I like it.
If you can have Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes you can have Blizzard and Avalanche
man thats different
Brodie you are too damn critical, I’m in Arizona my daughter worked for the Coyotes but as I’ve followed to team it’s clear that playing in Z was one huge mess after another and it’s time this floundering franchise got new light. You can’t expect the fans in Utah as well as the media to be rational, they are simply THRILLED to have a new team. Cut em some slack. Nobody is hiding the fact that the state government ponied up $900 million, it was in discussion for weeks.
Yea i dont get why so much vitriol is being thrown towards Utah. They weren't the ones who messed it up. Ryan wanted a team and saw one struggling to find a home and pounced. Utahns being excited about it is not a bad a thing.
It may not be rational, but they just lost the team they have loved for years. Please be empathetic and patient with yotes fans. Especially considering the amount of patience rewarded by the current crop of prospects. Utah is inheriting a set to go franchise.
8:55 to be fair, you can get that view from a Walmart parking lot in the SLC valley. Not a lot of prior planning needed to record that video clip 😊. Go Utah Whatevers!
be nice.
It was probably at the top of the Delta center.
Hey! How about that for an interim name? Utah Whatevers. Lol 😆
I live in Utah and know very little about the NHL or hockey in general, but I have been watching many videos by folks like you and I'm starting to look forward it. Thanks for your assessment of the whole situation.
IT IS UN paralleled in action. Unreal speed with precision. The more I learn of the nuances of the top level pros, the more exciting it becomes. And the NHL is TOP LEVEL.
You'll love it. I kinda wish I was still living in Utah to go watch them. I went to a few college games at Weber State and BYU and a couple Grizzlies games and it was a ton of fun. Hockey is one of the funnest sports to watch.

Welcome! You're going to love it! Fans like you are alleviating one of my big anxieties about the NHL coming to Utah, that Utah already has a large population of hockey fans with existing team loyalties, with very little untapped audience for a local franchise. Seeing posts like this is encouraging and exciting!
The Gila Monster is the state reptile. So no that wasnt a knock on Arizona. People seem to forget that although there are Mountains in Utah, Utah is a desert state.

Yeah snow owls is sweet
I grew up in the Salt Lake City area and remember the Salt Lake Golden Eagles as a child. In my teens I went to several Utah Grizzlies games. Hockey is one of the best sports to watch in person. I live in southern Utah now and have been rooting for the Golden Knights.
Utah is a desert and Gila Monsters are one of our state animals.
The problem there is the Vegas already has a gila monster as their mascot.
I have no idea why, but I absolutely love your insider commentary about how reporters do their job. Maybe a wacky idea, but I would love to see more of it. I started cracking up when you pointed out the NHL in Utah website on the marquis behind her 😂 "It's right there. Behind you"
As a Utahn we definitely know we’re paying for the team etc and we are 100% in and excited. We want Utah to become a sports Mecca and this and an MLB team, as well as the Olympics and all the different sports with a presence here are helping us achieve that goal
UTAH MORONIS, UTAH SAINTS, UTAH SALTIES.
If Arizona is keeping its history, can Winnipeg have its back, please?
It certainly opens the door for that discussion.
@jeffa.7618 I would like to see this team sell specific assets, namely the WHA history and memorabilia to the Winnipeg Jets effectively amalgamating the Jets and the Jets. The current Jets in return can send specific assets dating back to the Atlanta Thrashers. Just a thought.
BTW, please don't call the team "Utah" and whatever moniker you choose, please make it plural not something like "Blizzard" or "Venom"... at least add an "s" to the names.
North Stars
No.
@@aaronreeve1414The move is similar to the original Cleveland Browns when the original team was sold then move to Baltimore to become the Ravens. I think the gilla monster is the state reptile of Utah.
Having ‘Blizzard’ and ‘Avalanche’ geographically close to each other isn’t any less weird that the Kings and Golden Knights being close to each other. We also have the Canadiens and Canuks.
To be fair, kings and golden knights aren't that similar and a good portion of the population has no idea wtf a cannuck is.

Future Utah Hockey Club fan (and new subscriber) here. I really enjoy your channel commentary. I especially enjoy how you try to present both sides of this AZ/UT drama without dragging either side and in good humor.
While I feel bad that AZ is losing their team , the misdirected anger towards "Salt Lake" makes zero sense. This was a failure of both team management and Arizona politicians. The blame should be directed there. If they had been able to work together to meet the teams needs, the team would still be around. Maybe Arizonians can think of that next time they vote in an election. Honestly there are many cities that would have jumped at the opportunity to have a team, so insulting an entire community is pretty dumb.
appreciate you being here! fine line between utah being persistent and poaching. i agree time had run its course in arizona and that falls largely on the owner alone
Completely understand why the folks in SLC want to know the name of their new toy and want to buy jerseys with the new name branding. Not going to sell too many jerseys with UHC (Unknown Hockey Club) LOL. I'm excited for salt lake and while it's pretty obvious you have a strong affinity for Phoenix, I believe if they can go ahead and name the team, get the promotions going and resolve the arena issue, they're going to be successful.
Just wanted to let you know, Utah does have mountains, but it is also a desert. The Great Basin part in Utah is desert. Mostly located near the Great Salt Lake, it is the Bonneville Salt Flats. We are considered a desert region right up to the mountains. The Great Basin goes thru about 3/4 of Utah, Nevada, Idaho and others that I am not sure about.
5:00 KSLs studios and Delta Center are within walking distance I think that's why there's the quad box
It is just blocks away
Yes, Salt Lake City is in a desert. (This is also why a baseball stadium should have a roof, imo. It gets really hot in the summer.)
Yep, it referred to the high desert.
No it doesnt. It’s nice in salt lake city in summer. Phoenix is hot
@@alansnow1129Well obviously it’s all relative, but I’d say SLC would need to be about 10-15 degrees cooler to be “nice.” Phoenix would need to be about 20-30 degrees cooler.
Actually no...if you go by climate definitions, Phoenix has a hot desert climate (Köppen: BWh), typical of the Sonoran Desert. SLC. on the other hand, has either a Mediterranean climate (Csa) or dry-summer continental climate (Dsa) depending on which variant of the system is used. I live in SLC now but used to live in Arizona for a number of years and the two areas are completely different. Due to its altitude, SLC is much closer to places in AZ like Flagstaff and Prescott.
“Intermountain West” is a blanket term to describe mostly the region of the Great Basin and Northern Rockies. More broadly the Southwest as well. Everything between the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada’s/Cascades, Excluding the West Coast. Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho and parts of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington. It’s a way of describing the region that Utah is particularly fond of, because we are the geographic center of it. 🥰☺️
As a Utah native, so happy for this.

Yes, Intermountain West is a term used here in Utah.
Intermountain, as I understand it, refers to the western side of the Rockies, including Boise and the rest of Idaho, Montana, and western Wyoming...

As someone who lived in Cleveland when the Browns moved, I’m seeing similarities in how this whole thing was handled. Not saying it wasn’t warranted, but just strange.
It’s got to be named the Utah Blizzard. It’s the perfect name. It’s got the two ZZ, which is a hallmark of Utah teams, and Salt Lake City gets snow squalls coming off the Great Salt Lake that qualify as mini blizzards.
This is so cool for Utah, love visiting Utah. Great coverage 👏 👍 i wonder what the future hold for stadiums in Europe or other continents. I think in less than 100 years we see nfl, nhl, mlb, nba in other countries

It seems that with 22,000+ deposits and the Delta Center max capacity after the renovations at 17,000 thats an issue
One quick mention of the Grizzlies. I wish more was said about the future of Salt Lake City's professional hockey team that has served the area since 1995 (under two separate franchises). Maybe they'll get more love when fans see the price of NHL tickets.
They renovated the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, built in the early 90s, and it looks amazing.

Avalanche is something completely different than a Blizzard.
But the Avalanche have a pawprint of a Yeti as their alternate logo, don’t they?
@@scottNNJ They used to, but the Colorado “C” replaced that alternate logo in 2015-16
Blizzards contribute to an avalanche. Utah gonna be a feeder team for the Avs? 😂
Snow related regardless
If the team name and logo for Utah will initially be temporary, then the only appropriate name is The Utah Placeholders. The logo must have the acronym WIP (work in progress) in it
Most of utah is desert, and the gila monster is the state reptile. Not a knock on AZ
Chance, the mascot of the Golden Knights is a Gila Monster
Intermountain West is a term used quite a bit in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and parts of Nevada. While it technically includes parts of Oregon and Washington, you don’t hear it as much there. Intermountain Health is one of the main health conglomerates in the region.
I am weirdly invested in this whole Arizona Coyotes story. I guess its because as a fan in Nashville I've been on both sides of it. We got the Titans from Houston and they weren't bitter or anything... and then I've gone through almost losing the Nashville Predators not too many years later.
The team name beginning with 'Utah', although based in Salt Lake City, kind of reminds me of a couple of teams from the Canadian Football League. Two teams are named after their provinces, instead of the cities in which they are based. These are the BC (British Columbia) Lions and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Utah has been talked about for an expansion team for years. There's no reason why the buyers couldn't have had a rendered team name and logo.
Utah Express. as Utah was the site of the transcontinental railroad completion.
Excellent work. Looking forward to seeing my CAPS in SLC
Brodie giving us the best coverage on this topic, gotta love it!
As a fellow Utahn and from SLC. We are only talking about name and colors as our main topic because we itch for pro sports. The not the merrier and the number of pre-sale tickets for NHL is showing that.
Next give us MLB!
I don't really understand your criticism of the team based on the LAST OWNER running his into the ground for 12 years. Like the financial issues were that team being shit at paying bills. Also, you're forgetting on your criticisms that there is precedence with a Colorado Avalanche. Very similar circumstance too. Their team left Quebec because of financial issues and has thrived in Colorado.
I do know one thing, they are going to hate the traffic and roads for getting around SLC.
Kings and Knights play there in September don't forget...
"Frozen Fury" has been played in Salt Lake past 3 seasons.
...and side note, Kings Forward Trevor Lewis is from Salt Lake

We have semi pro teams for hockey, volleyball, and basketball all playing in the same 10k seat arena. I've been to games for all three sports and they seem to have the logistics down pretty well.
$100 per seat is not a large sum of money for those who can afford season tickets. Looks like a gimmick to show how much interest there is in season tickets. Should've made it at least $1,000 deposit.
Yes with any novelty there's interest. Even when the Jets 1.0 moved to Phoenix in 1996 there were similar trends in deposits for the inaugural season for season tickets.
No double zz. No bee’s. No weather. No emotions.
The Avalanche also had a mascot named Howler, who was a Yeti.
EAGLES by itself. Needs no headscratching.
The Jazz have a mascot named bear well 1 1/2 masots to get technical. The grizzlies are a team so the conflict is your perception.
They can come up with a logo in time for next season. Winnipeg had theirs ready pretty quickly, now i understand that means they gotta figure out a name quickly though
I was partial to the social media suggestion i saw called "the stormin mormon" 😂
The Utah Poly's.
They need a name plate that looks like a missionary name tag
That is the best one
A post for a team on another CZcams video made me laugh out loud--the Latter-day Skates
I am sad to see the Cyottes leave, but let's face it. They should of left 10 years ago. Garry Bettman & the NHL held on too long this situation of bad ownership after bad ownership. Salt Lake City doesn't suck, it was the different ownerships that sucked over the years & their relationship with the city's of Arizona that cause this inevitable dismay. The team should of gone to Quebec, but that's a whole different discussion. I hope the Cyottes come back, but under different ownership. Even Bizz said so himself. They need a good owner.
Salt lake always supported their hockey team way back when at least.

Id love to see the pioneers as a team name. Its a great nod to the history of the area.
Just a couple of facts: Utah, second driest state in the nation and it is a high Mtn desert, and I heard they are building a new stadium.
When Winnipeg got the Thrashers from Atlanta in May of 2011 it didn't take long to come up with a name in fact they had one by the NHL Draft in June 2011.
That probably a because they already had a team there before called the Jets before they moved to Phoenix
I wish the Utah Saints the best of luck.
I've enjoyed watching your series of commentaries of interviews and media coverage of this NHL move of the Coyotes from Arizona to Utah. First I have to say I feel bad for the Coyotes fans --really awful losing their team, but it does seem like the arena situation was a complicated mess! An NHL team playing in a 4500 seat arena? Even the ECHL Utah Grizzlies have a 12,000 seat arena (the Maverick Center). Hopefully that new arena down there can get built (come out of the ground) within the allotted 5 years.
Salt Lake City does have Ice Hockey History, though of course not NHL. The IHL Salt Lake Golden Eagles from 1969-1994 played in the Salt Palace and Delta Center and the Current Grizzlies from 1994 played in the Delta Center and Maverick Center. A number of NHL players came through Salt Lake. Theo Fleury and Dan Plante come to mind. BTW, google Dan Plante's Golden Eagles Jersey -- so cool. Fierce Golden Eagle face and Eagle feathers on lower part of the Jersey. The Golden Eagle is the State of Utah's bird of pray. Hope the Smiths keep that in mind. I watched many Golden Eagles and Grizzlies games at the Salt Palace and Delta center, including watching fans through salmon onto the Ice to feed the Bears when they scored! Anyway, I'm really more of a baseball fan and have been following this NHL excited in hopes that this is a precursor of the Big League Utah coalition landing a MLB team in Utah in the not too distant future. BTW, most of Utah is indeed desert though maybe not so hot and dry like Arizona. Not a lot grows here without the help of irrigation. And we do actually have Coyotes here. FWIW, Roadrunners can be found in southern Utah. Speaking of which, I wonder what will happen to the Grizzlies now? I haven heard any talk about that.
O/U on how many years it is before they make the NHL playoffs ?
I'm torn between 0.5 and 1.5 being the line. Th Coyotes were in the thick of it at the All Star Break then the wheels fell off with a 14 game losing streak.
@@TheChamrod04 put me down for the overs. 😎
When the Washington Redskins changed their name for that one year, they changed to the Washington Football Team and surprisingly a lot of fans liked their name and preferred it to stay that way instead of the current name Commanders
Washington Pigskins. Go Hogs.
Black Bear is the name of a group based in Maryland that is buying up a bunch of ice rinks and youth teams in the northeast, nearly monopolizing the market and creating a league for them to play amongst themselves and not with the remaining non-Black Bear team. They are fiercely active on self-branding in the youth hockey world, and I can’t see another hockey organization, even an NHL team partway across the country, using the name without some sort of legal battle.
Gila monster, famously known to be in Arizona and a mascot for the Vegas Golden Knights. Local news crews clearly doing their research.
They already have the JAZZ, now should have the BUZZ.

This name is underrated. Most of the names I've heard are trash.
Too generic and minor league.
One person says "at Delta Center" and everyone saying it that is not a Utahn. THE Delta Center! For crying out loud the reporters got it. NHL and National media, it's The Delta Center!
Ok, Brodie, so I do feel sorry for the hockey fans in Arizona. AND, a few of their cities are definitely more highly rated in terms of population/ability to support a sports franchise. BUT, the state never showed any particular enthusiasm-overall-towards the old Winnipeg Jets' arrival. Honestly, when you boil it all down, it's about entertainment. There are many, many people who do not believe in having their tax money used to enrich the entertainment industry. I have to respect that. Then again, it's sad for many who truly enjoy various forms of entertainment, that it really "takes a village" to support a sports franchise. God bless Utah-no matter their reasoning-for showing a desire to bring a team to their state. I pray for them to succeed. I've always felt awful when a team ends up moving/abandoning their original foundation! Yet, I have little forgiveness in seeing new teams continue to go to certain cities that have proven they will not show support them. Anyway, being an old man, I still remember the Golden Eagles...the Phoenix Roadrunners, the San Diego Gulls...was it the Portland Buckaroos? And the Seattle Totems. Back in the day, some of our NHL heroes who continued to play-past their prime-ended up finishing up their careers in the WHL. Anyway, I stick by my choice of "the Blizzard" with icy blue and white uniforms. Haven't, yet, formalized a thought for their second jersey, but I think of purity when I think of Salt Lake City. Perhaps it can be the opposite of said icy blue & white? Maybe dark and broody? Good luck to Salt Lake City and it's new team!!!
Just play the clips in full and *then* comment on them, rather than interrupting every two seconds.
I think Blizzard is the best choice presented so far - gotta pick something winter-related IMO. If they go with a muscular "Abominable Snowman" in their logo and as a mascot, that would be the best of both worlds. I also like the mountain peaks on the back of the jerseys at the shoulders - very nice touch.
Smith had been talking with the nhl for 2 years. He doesn't already have a name yet.
Regardless of Olympians being a terrible name, they would have to pay the IOC a licensing fee in order to use it.
Exactly. The IOC even frowned on a local Atlanta radio station's traffic copter calling itself "The Olympic Lounge," and they ended up calling it "The Olambic Lounge.: No joke. Although, they seem to have no problem with Olympique Marseilles or Olympique Lyon.
@@iplayfhorn The probable reason why the IOC doesn't have an issue with Lyon and Marseilles is because both of those teams were established well before copyright infringement was a thing. Marseilles was established in 1899 (the first Olympics took place in 1896) and Lyon was formed in 1950.
@@ulical That makes sense.
The Intermountain west is a term for the space between the Rocky and Sierra Nevada/Cascade Mountains. The local healthcare system is called “Intermountain Health,” for example. It’s more of a geographic term to describe the Basin and Range geologic province, thouigh I only hear it being used in Utah.
Blizzard and Avalanche aren’t even the same thing. Idk why people making a big deal of that
Yes, intermountain west is a Utah thing
It's very easy to make vinyl, Brodie. They could have had that NHL vinyl put together in less than 2 hours.
Gary Bettman and Ryan Smith only had single lines in that hype video, very easy to put that together.
"Intermountain West" is a common phrase used in Utah, as well as in parts of Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho.
Plenty of us who live in Utah are very mad at Spencer Cox and our politicians for being willing to spend this kind of money on sports, especially when times are so tough.

Can't wait for the season to start, this is incredible for Utah. I do feel sorry for the fans in Phoenix, hope they get an expansion team soon.

They are going to retrofit the Delta Center but have gotten the land approval for building a new arena and entertainment district too.
Also all locals understand what the bill means as far as taxes. Some like it, some don't, but its not a secret to the locals. And i know you're not happy about the relocation, but the predisposition to rag on local news and fans for being excited about this isn't fair to them.

No hard feelings about S.L.C sucks, we have thick skin and understand the emotions.
UT. & AZ are similar, we have mountains in the north & a lot of desert outside the Wasatch front. The weather is usually good with a couple weeks too hot & a couple that are cold. We were the 2nd driest state and probably still close to that. Good show and hope that everything works out for AZ.
Having a league where Krakens and Yetis are mascots to team would be cool.
I don't know if it is just the jobs I worked, or what - but I was nervous about if this city could support a hockey team. The only hockey fans I know in Utah are ones like me that have moved outside of work. Hopefully this will increase the fan-base for hockey here as I have missed talking about the sport since I moved here. Also - if they sell jerseys with a temporary name before the official name - I am definitely buying one
