  • John Brodie #12 played for the San Francisco Forty Niners from 1957 - 1973 and was drafted 3rd overall in the 1957 draft. He threw for 31,548 yards in his career including 21 comebacks and 22 game winning drives. 1965 was probably his best year being selected to the Pro Bowl and throwing for 3,100 yards, 30 touchdowns, a 61.9 completion percentage and a Quarterback rating of 95.3. He shared playing time with Y.A. Tittle until he became the starter in 1961 when Tittle was traded to the New York Giants. When Brodie retired from the NFL at the end of the 1973 season he ranked third in career passing yards, behind only Johnny Unitas and Fran Tarkenton, and ranked eighth in all time touchdown passes when he retired, yet still he has not been voted into the Hall of Fame.
    Career totals:
    Seasons 17
    Games Started 158
    Games Played 201
    Pass Attempts 4491
    Completion % 55
    Total Yards 31,548
    Total TDs 214
    Yards/Atmpt 7.0
    Sacked 47

Most underrated QB of all time, and it's not even close. By my count he was the best QB in the league on 3 separate seasons, and his 1970 MVP season was fantastic.

My all time favorite Niner. So lucky and grateful to get his autograph on a jersey I sent him. It hangs in my closet now but hopefully will wear it when they reach the super bowl again.

He had a very interesting autobiography, "Open Field." Strongly recommended.

Brodie should be in the Hall of Fame, and it needs to happen quick, as he doesn't have all that much time. Great to see these highlights, and I saw Brodie play once at Kezar Stadium in the late 60s, another game in his last season at the Stick, and heaps of away games on the TV. And those home games that were not telecast on KPIX in San Francisco, or KSBW in Salinas because it was ever so too close to SF, it was KSFO AM and Lon Simmons and the play by play.

I love Jon Brody as a young guy but most of all when he was throwing to Jean Washington I wish they would make a clip of that

I met John Brodie today. Had the opportunity to deliver to his house in San Diego. He is a very gracious man. Although i never saw him play I vividly remember him in the niners history books. Meeting him took me back 40 years to my childhood. Thanks Brodie!
