  • We've been digging and digging to get to the bottom of the claim against Haiden Deegan's Star Yamaha YZ250F at the 2022 Loretta Lynn National. In part 1 of our investigation, we talk to Brennan Schofield (the one who claimed the bike), Tim Cotter (MX Sports), Mike Burkeen (AMA Official), and Brian Deegan. Part 2 will feature Matt Walker and Donnie Luce (Yamaha).
    Intro 00:00 - 06:17
    Brennan Schofield 06:18 - 44:09
    Tim Cotter (MX Sports) 44:10 - 1:20:00
    Mike Burkeen (AMA) 1:20:01 - 2:04:49
    Brian Deegan 2:04:50 - 2:08:36

    Couple key things I found while conducting these interviews: Brennan does admit that there was an offer of sort from Yamaha of engines to replace so damaged ones he had along with an opportunity to test the bike at Goat Farm.
    Burkeen states that the AMA rules relating to a claim will only penalize another party if they counter claim a bike to interfere or if a rider is directly threatened by the claimed party. Negotiating a deal to receive some level of support in return for dropping a claim is NOT against the rules.
    Brennan also admits that he actually doesn't know if his bike sponsor / dealer was threatened by Yamaha, it was assumed.
    Cotter and Burkeen speak very highly of dealing with Brennan and his handling of the situation.
    Cotter and Burkeen both speak about the engine builder trying to be involved a decent bit.
    Cotter and Burkeen both state that they were told his parents "weren't around" and in retrospective they both wish they would've asked further on this.
    Both admit to not realizing that Brennan was under 18 in the moment.
    Burkeen states he didn't deny the kid the ability to make the claim without his parents around as he didn't want to run down the clock and risk the kid not being able to make the claim against the bike. He absolutely didn't want to interfere with the process and have it look like the AMA / MX Sports would deny a legitimate bike claim.
    Cotter, Burkeen, and Deegan all match up with a much shorter time line for the conversation with Brennan in the office. Their versions of Deegan's questions all match Brennan's.

    I’ve heard from multiple sources when Brennen, Derek & Brennens dad, went to Matt Walker’s Pitt & met with Donnie Luce he said two very interesting things;
    *1.)* _”there’s technology in the motor we don’t want released to the public”_
    *2.)* you won’t be able to service this motor…not even to he will _[points at motor builder Derek Harris]_
    …what I’m hearing is the engine’s got something along the lines of Electronically-Controlled Valves which operate independently from a camshaft & require timing set up from a Laptop using specialized proprietary software (which would be totally unattainable for Brennen & Derek).
    Beyond that, Moto 3 was a throw-away moto for Haiden, which, In my opinion makes it a good time to test the feasibility of a prototype system… & _Electronic Valve Control _ is technology which already exists, Honda’s _iVTEC_ system utilizes Electronic Valve Control, the advantage being that you could have Variable Valve Timing which could be continuously variable (with system’s like Honda’s Standard VTEC, you’re limited to a _REGULAR_ cam lobe half & a _VTEC_ cam lobe half…there’s no more, no less & nothing in between, so it would offer superior versatility in the valve timing department, & the camshaft would be a bare _dummy_ camshaft with no lobes (so lower rotating mass therefore greater acceleration).
    The bad Press on Yamaha from this is going to be unrecoverable…the only way they can make this right is for Brennen to be on a _Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha_ in 2023

    This leaves such a sour taste in my mouth, the kid lost his bikes even after he pulled the claim. if you can't see that people are doing things behind the scenes to mess with Brennan because of this claim open your eyes. No one should have been allowed to make contact with Brennan after he made the claim he was clearly pressured into pulling the claim. if you don't want your bike to be claimed don't bring a 40 thousand dollar bike to an amateur race. Haiden is clearly the real deal and will have a very long professional career and I am a huge fan and avid watcher of the Deegan family. with that being said I feel like this was handled very incorrectly and Tim Cotter should be no where near a rider after a claim. him claiming "oh I thought he was 18" see how well that holds up in court (not saying this is going to court). At the end of the day the kid is going to America as a Canadian rider following the rules and trying to compete the best he can. the rule shouldn't be a rule if you are not allowed to exercise that rule.

Amateur motocross should be about the best product manufacturers can provide to amateur racing without any modifications other than suspension valving to fine tune for the rider. Take karting for example, Louis Hamilton raced with a locked stock motor like every one else. Talent and hard work is what drove him to success. That principle should be applied to motocross. This allows for equal racing throughout amateur levels. Money is almost out of the equation. Talent and work ethic would be the ultimate differentiator between racers.

Had to make decisions, knowing, I had to be consistent, because decisions would set presidents. Cursed at, flipped off and approached by other people for favoritism. When I left, riders saw me at a restaurant and stated that they respected me as an official because I was consistent. The MX promoter shouldn’t be in the picture. Why for any reason on earth was ANY representative from MXSports, a sponsor organizer, assuming authority talking to this minor alone and asking why they wanted or not to proceed with action? The article in racerX seemed like such a coverup based on the wording and now this confirms this .
    Yamaha got caught red handed by what they admitted to? Wow! Fans want to see racers be part of the event that is about the racers and when sponsors control things, threaten the riders, maybe fans should rise up and send a message to those sponsors; don’t buy their products.
    IF there was an addition to this rule, that if a sponsor directly conflicts, threatens the individual making the claim, demands reasons for why they want the bike, that sponsor is banned from the event for 2 years, would those representing Yamaha responded this way?
    Will people, fans, riders, view this as cheating, even if it was not challenged or the bike was opened up? Hard to know. Was Yamaha acting unfairly? Financially, absolutely yes. Not being fair sometimes gets viewed as cheating. Thus why the rule exits. Clearly it is unfair to bring an expensive bike that is way out of the budget of the majority of riders and Yamaha fighting for this bike, with MXsports defending them, just tarnishes the event.
    One thing to remember is that fans are the money and can be the power send a message they support riders over sponsors. Fans have the power to cripple the sponsors and help racers that challenge sponsor corruption .
    It seems as though a good attorney would destroy Tim Cotter, IF you study body language (bobbing of the head, arms folded - usually indicates hiding information as in protection of the heart/chest, repetition, possessive juncture in speech) he clearly was acting on behalf of MXsports and sponsor interests not the athletes. He claims “ownership” as authorities as “ours” when it was the AMA. It is very clear from watching his reactions, tone of voice he is on the defense for questions not requiring defense. The reason “why, “ should NEVER have been asked by MXsports or Tim Cotter. MXsports is sitting now as an open can of worms responsible for this mess when you listen to him.

      No where did I make any judgement of view about the Deegen's. I think it is sad for the Deegan's and I feel bad about that. In fact, as a young talented rider, getting all the hype, that is very tough. He is not in control of his future, the sponsors are. Looking at Adam CianCiarillo, in a similar light, and he had very expensive bikes as well, where is he now? Where is his multi-time Ama super cross championships? crickets! Same with Alessi. All this fame and pressure can coming to a crash, when that rider always finishing behind you (like Cooper Webb) becomes the champion in the real AMA events. Was the talent drown in corporate greed and sponsorship, a syndicate that MXsports, and FELD survives on at the cost of peoples lives and futures? The Deegen's could fall into the same trap. However, when a kid challenges the sponsor control over riders, such as this Yamaha bike, it probably benefits the Deegen's rather than hurts them. Haiden has an impossible task of being the best, commanded a life by groups like MXsports and Yamaha, while loosing his life as a kid growing up in a normal life. His life is dictated by success and those controlling forces are companies like Yamaha. Their choices have ability to destroy his future far more than 1 rider standing up for fairness for all riders. Yamaha's actions and MXsports actions hurt the Deegen's because they thrust them into this mess when it was not their fault.

    I can't believe this story has blown up this much. I also can't believe people are blowing up Brennan, the Deegans, AMA, or Tim Cotter. From what is coming out it seems they didn't do anything wrong (of course it's easy to look back and pick apart little things, but overall they all handled the situation well considering the circumstances).
    To me it seems the most questionable events occurred with Matt Walker and the motor builder. Sounds like they were both too aggressive at different points in the event which neither of them should have been involved with. Obviously if Yamaha threatened a dealer license that's a big deal, but we'll probably never hear if that actually happened or not. Also interesting is the social media posts shown in this video from Brennan... it does appear he may have had some more underlying motivation than what he has lead on. Definitely doesn't make his claim of the bike wrong or invalid, just a bit more interesting haha.

    I watched this video with a friend of mine and we had just a few questions on the matter. If we could ask Tim Cotter a few questions, these would be them.
    #1. It seems that you continually spoke in hypothetical terms while referring to the claiming rule. How many times have you personally been an intricate part of the claiming rule and how many times. Second part of this question… Do people that claim bikes typically know how many races, classes the bike is registered to participate in that day, weekend, etc.?
    #2. After all the interactions you had with Derek, how is it possible you can’t remember his name? It would seem elementary to retain this information, especially because I’d assume there has been a lot of “water cooler talk” about this, post situation.
    #3. Not knowing whose name was on the check, not knowing the rule book, simply forgetting key details, so many red flags. Moving forward, do you feel business ethics and processes need to be reviewed?
    I’m sorry, but my friend that watched this with me has been a phycologist for over 15 years now…. He seems to think Tim is not being fully inclusive or transparent. Just his humble opinion from a grainy YT video.

    So, just so I’m clear, the motor builder contacted the AMA the week proceeding the race to confirm how to claim a bike and then did most of the speaking on the day. Why is anyone thinking this was initiated by the kid.

    • @wyatthillius113
      @wyatthillius113 Před 2 lety

      Because they only listen to the kids part of the video

      Yeah man.. no-one decides on the day to enact some obscure rule.. or carries that amount of cash in case they decide to claim a bike.. get real..

    • @venturini09
      @venturini09 Před rokem

      If you were the one behind the claim, would you let the kid go into the office without you and possibly mishandle the claim?

    • @superzuki8222
      @superzuki8222 Před rokem

      @@venturini09 yes but like both the motor guy and the AMA offical said. He wasn’t family and was told to leave. He had no choice but to leave it to the kid. I find it even more suspicious that the motor guy went and not the parent.

    I can't see anyone trying this again. I don't care if they did cheat where the heck was this kids dad?

    • @xafbxmoto269
      @xafbxmoto269 Před 2 lety +2

      His dad was getting everything ready to leave because they had to get to Canada for another race

    • @ozzielinkin

      It does not matter where his dad was. The kid clearly knew what he wanted to do as far as claiming the bike.
      But he had to cave to his un named sponsor to end the claim.
      Funny he didnt mention making a you tube video but the other guys brought it up.

    If AMA doesn’t do anything about this they are enabling this behavior. They need to take action on the bullies. Proof power is everything. Not everyone has the luck of being born to greatness or born knowing people. This kid just has a dream to ride a factory bike. Ends up being it was an unobtanium 😂

      No One was Bullied, that was a two faced Lie...
      listen to Brennen's Trainer... it was the Engine Builder behind the claim and he went through Brennen and Deegan to attempt to get it...
      knowledge is power... go get some.

    I have been waiting to hear Tim Cotter's viewpoint and kudos to you to getting the people imvolved to speak on this. I feel for Tim for being villified for doing his job and following the rules as they are written.

    Is Cotter an AMA official? 58 minutes into this video cotter says he’s an AMA official and put the bike in his trailer

    • @elevated-apparel
      @elevated-apparel Před 2 lety +1

      Right I though I was the only one that heard that. So if it went in his trailer then I wouldn't want it either cuz he would of let Deegan and star bring a bike in late at night and Swap the parts.

      Cotter sounds like he is trying to patronize the kid Brennan, which makes me think Cotter must have made a few mistakes with this whole situation.

  • @noonespecial1217

    The main question..
    Who was the person or organization that approached Brennan’s sponsor? There’s no question that after this contact was made everything went south for Brennen, a swift and major reversal took place.
    Tim Cotter, the AMA Official, and Brennan all tell the same story about this issue. I was especially drawn in when Tim Cotter said he got a knock on his door from Brennen’s sponsor saying this was a bad idea for him. Next thing you know Bremen is out of bikes to race.

    • @mikehergenroether6160
      @mikehergenroether6160 Před rokem

      100 percent. Someone or a group of people put Brennan's sponsor in a position where they had to choose between supporting Brennan or their own livelihood. That's the real wrongdoing in all of this that has not been uncovered.
