Police and fire crews taped off the area allowing for a 150 metre exclusion zone. Police evacuated nearby buildings up to a block away.
Traffic was diverted and roads were closed for over an hour causing significant traffic delays in Surry Hills.
Gas venting could be heard from over a block away.
Specialist utility workers suited up in protection gear and carefully removed machinery from the major leak.
After the removal of the equipment, the workers were able to safely shutdown the main.
Emergency services responded quickly to prevent a major gas explosion.
The cause of the rupture is yet to be investigated.
