It was totally crazy. We were livestreaming on our channel with an adoption day and we noticed the wind drop ( like the calm before a storm) but we noticed a black area forming fast. We thought we might have 10 minutes before it hit and in under 60 seconds we had people running everywhere. It came so fast.

I was only a couple of miles offshore and we took a direct hit. Day One of training for the Sydney to Hobart with a new crew on board Flying Fish Arctos. In 40 years of offshore sailing I have never experienced a system as sudden and violent as that. Video is on the socials somewhere...

I was in Hornsby that day watching the radar. The Dee Why storm developed just west of there. Interestingly it passed directly over me and at that time it just produced very heavy rain and a bit of wind. No thunder or lightning that I could see or hear. It was over in 10 mins. As it tracked towards the coast it must of built in intensity very rapidly. A good example of how we can’t be complacent about these sorts of weather events as they can change so fast. People said “why weren’t we warned of it”, well it’s hard if 15 mins before it just produced heavy rain.

Two years later and the building damage from this storm hasn’t been fixed. The unit next door to me that lost it’s roof and the one across the road that had the roof land on it are still in a state of disrepair. Scaffolding surrounding them for two years is disgusting. What a pathetic country we have these days.
