  • For this month's guest tutorial, i have one of my Omveda Records label artists and a close friend. A real upcoming talent, whose production is really shining through over the last few years. I'm always impressed by his strong foundation with his psytrance kick and bassline, that just is so solidly cutting through his mixdowns. Glad to have him onboard for this quick tutorial on how he makes them so far using Parallel Processing.

Omfg. Dude u r a genius. I finally found a way to make my mix sounds more fat via parallel compression without clippings by peaking kick transients or distortions. Is tricky though to folder the kick and bass together. I’ve never done that before.

Would love to see the process of constructing this particular darkpsy kick and bass from the ground up and maybe make it with something like serum that’s relatively accessible to everyone as oppose to a DAW specific synth. Great work on the videos. This kick and bass is very nice sounding.

Cheers . There's plenty of psytrance bassline tutorials on serum already, but yes will definitely look into something similar :)

Thankyou, Nice tutorial) If its possible its good to make a tutorial about complete kick and bass processing, Most of the tutorials in youtube are only about making kick and bass

You forgot to mention a vital component to parallel processing which is it that can introduce phase shifting in its own right. When you soloed just the kick bass and the parallel comp, you could hear the phasing because of a slight delay between the return and sources. Print the return and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's not overly evident in the mix but it does create a some cancellation. This may also be due to the fact that EQ8 was used in the return chain (instead of a linear phase EQ), which is rather ripply. Some plugs don't report their latency to Ableton properly and phasing can also occur with parallel processing due to this. Think it's bull?

Also same desired result can be achieved using an audio effect rack and not having to consume a precious return channel, unless of course you're using it for global parallel compression. Tomato/ Tomatoe

Hey Andrei, I see your point, if you notice I am only cutting the mid-range and not altering the low frequency, you will have phase changes only if you cut anything in the lower spectrum, in this case, it's just altering the amplitude and very less or non in terms of phase. Overall in the master, the phase relationship of kick and bass is solid(perfectly in-phase) this is the main reason why linear phase EQ was not required :) I have never had any phase issues in this process
and yes this can be achieved by grouping within the channel, but I like to have on a dedicated return track so that it's visible on my mixer layout which makes it easy for my final mix down process.
