Do you find yourself in or around Hiawassee, GA? If so you need to swing by Bell Mountain. Not only are there spectacular views, but you can drive all the way to the top.
We've been around Hiawassee, GA for a little while now, and we've been mainly using our time to get out and explore the various state parks and hiking trails around the area. Most of the places we've went to see have been around half an hour away, but the people we've met here have told us we had to go see Bell Mountain. Well it finally happened the other day.
What we found were some pretty amazing views of the mountain ranges and Lake Chatuge.

Thank you for making--and posting--this travelogue! The late Hal Herrin (of Mountain Realty) sold my parents the house on Lake Chatuge near Young Harris, where we lived from 1976 to 1985, and he was very active in the local Lions Club chapter. Until last night, I had never known that he'd bought the summit of Bell Mountain, but I'm glad that he did! That was one of the few places we never visited (rather like how New Yorkers never go to the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building, because they've always been there), although one of my brothers-in-law went up there in 1977. Bell Mountain (minus the graffiti that's there now...) was easily visible from the schoolyard of the former elementary school, which was converted into a small strip mall after it closed in 1977.

No worries at all +J. Jason Wentworth :) Thank you for sharing with us a bit of your history with Bell Mountain. Some of the coolest information about a place can be the little things people remember about them. Like knowing you could see it from your schoolyard as a kid, that's so awesome! Katie and I were just talking yesterday about how when you live someplace it's way to easy to not see the cool stuff right around you. We lived in Lawrenceville GA for about 3 years and didn't get to Fort Yargo State Park (which was 20 minutes away) until we had left in our RV went to Wisconsin, then Florida, then we went there and absolutely loved it! Anyway, thanks again for sharing your memories of seeing the mountain we really appreciate it :)

I’ve lived in Hiawassee since 2005. And visiting here a lot ten years before that. Most of that graffiti is from the local kids. They don’t have much to do. A lot of the people who live here all year do not approve of the graffiti. Thank you for publicly stating your opinion as a visitor and vlogger.

We tried to go up two days ago car lost traction on the sharp turn so we decided to turn back. Definitely best to go when the roads are dry.

Take any mountain scenery from the Blue Ridge in TN, NC, or GA, photoshop a couple pagodas in it, and it could pass for Southern China. Nanjing (old capital of China) has a natural setting similar to Chattanooga.

Good info before visiting thanks! I am concerned about driving ...did you see many cars driving opposite way? I have a big wide jeep wondering if i fit in with other cars passing or there is enough room to pull over?

Thank you for this vid! I appreciate! I keep seeing how beautiful it is and was curious about the drive there and if I could walk to the top. I appreciate you for sharing this video. I have a smaller car and was wondering if I was able to drive there. Thanks again!

No worries +Nicki Apunbindaas It is a cool place to go for sure. I think you should easily be able to drive up there, as far as walking I'm not sure. If you park at the parking lot near the very top it is only like a 75 yard walk to the top but very steep, if you were to try and walk from the bottom of the mountain it would be extremely strenuous. I wouldn't walk from the bottom, I'd suggest driving up to the top. Hope this helps and let us know what you think once you make the trip :)

Thanks for the response! Sorry I was too broad. I appreciate you showing in the video about the parking lot below and the one on top, I did want to walk from the bottom parking lot to the one on top, that I don't mind at all. Hopefully I get to go this week

No worries at all Nicki, I hope you get to go this week, it's really a breathtaking view! We enjoyed the little walk up from the bottom parking lot :)

Thanks +Romjin Black They do allow people to swim in the lake below, there is a beach area you can visit or you can go out in a boat. I can't remember exactly where the beach area is but it is on the main road that goes through Hiawassee. Anyway let us know how your trip goes :)

Before it was paved, when it wasn't accessible to the public and there was no wood steps , no graffiti, no etc......
We would ride our dirt bikes or ATV's up to the top. It was dangerous because of the loose rocks and being so steep! But it was much nicer than it is now, I was a little upset of the people painting the rocks!! People don't have any respect anymore but thats either here or there for this post. So anyways I moved away 20 years ago but I visit every year to see my kinfolks there and I was very surprised to see the paved road. I will tell you all they did was pave the little dirt road . The curves and how steep it is hasn't changed none since I rode it the last time on an ATV. Even in a vehicle still scares me some!! The last time I was there I got some decent Drone Footage to check out if you care to watch. Its on my page so go check it out. Thanks for your footage!!!

That's very true +Randy Gray We ended up staying in Hiawassee for quite a while and ended up talking to a lot of people who would talk about how in the past you really had to work to get to the top. I kind of wish we'd been able to experience that way. The views were still awesome though :)

How far was the walk from the lot you parked at ?

    • @Mountainmodernlife
      @Mountainmodernlife  Před 5 lety +1

Hey +breia milde from the lot where we parked it was about a 300-foot walk to the decks on top. Though if you'd like you can actually drive your car right up to the top, though that 300-foot walk is pretty steep even for a car. But it's totally up to you how far you chose to drive or walk. Anyway, I hope that helps :)
