  • At a time when realism wasn't expected in video game sports titles, Madden redefined those expectations. I played it first on the Genesis.

    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured on the Mega SG.
    2. While Madden 94 was the first game in the series to have the NFL license, it did not have the licensed players. That wouldn't happen until the following year with Madden 95.
    3. Madden 97 and 98 are incredibly similar. They share loads of graphical assets and the same music. Only the front end and a few Super Bowl options separate the two.
    4. Surprisingly, Madden on the Genesis never exceeded 16 megs. I often wonder what it could have looked like had it gone to 32.
    5. While the Madden series showed up on the SNES as well, I never felt it played as nice as the Genesis versions. The crowd and voices sounded better on the SNES, but I preferred the music in the Genesis games as well.
    6. There are videos of the canceled 32-bit Madden 96 on the internet. It's easy to see why it was axed.
    7. Of all the Madden's here, I still prefer the original.
    8. While Madden NFL 94 still plays great, I actually disliked the new graphics and animation. It looked silly to me.
    9. There were 2 Madden's on the Saturn. 97 and 98. Both were awesome.
    10. One thing I always appreciated about the Madden games was the ability to simulate a game. Every single year I simulate the playoffs and Super Bowl to see who wins. That's be especially poignant this year.

What a fitting tribute to a video game Icon, Madden clearly revolutionized sports games, the same Madden Engine was adapted for the Fifa International Soccer franchise as well, which was obviously more popular in Europe. He did a great service for sports video games on top of all his other many achievements, the man shall always be a legend, may he RIP.

The first two Madden games on the Genesis are all I need. Love the music in the first game and would really enjoy hearing a well done arrangement of those tunes with real 'lectric geetars. That ambulance in the 2nd game was just hilarious, causing more more damage than the injured player had sustained... well not really but I just loved the absurdity of it all. I think the first few games have my favorite field graphics as well. Some of the later games had more detailed grass but the perspective seemed off. I would play so much of this and Lakers vs Celtics when they both came out. EA seemed like a brand new titan on the console and they really elevated the Genesis.

This game actually made American Football popular here in the UK again. I'm pretty sure of that. I remember the first game coming out. I got it on release here and it was from this game me and my friends worked out the rules of the game.
It was a huge hit here in the UK. Because it was a good game. Wasn't about the sport, or the licences or anything else other than the fact it played wonderfully.
We all fell in love with it. I have so many great memories of sitting in my best friends bedroom, playing 2 player games for hours.

College Football USA 96 and 97 are better "simulations" of football, but a bit of the fun factor is lost, and so if you are not that into football to begin with, Madden 94 is probably perfect.

I am definitely not a sports fan or someone who plays sports games, and I admit, when I was younger, I was one of those gamers who thumbed their noses at these games, but as I've grown up and learned to expand to accept more viewpoints, I realize this series is as important to many people as games like Megaman and Final Fantasy are to me, and regardless of what this game series is now, I still have to respect these classic games and their legacy for gaming as a whole.

Yeah I didn't want to be the one that said it but the series has taken a real hit as of late especially. What EA has turned the once great Madden series into is absolutely appalling. Especially now what a slap to the face and an insult to the man's name.

    R. I. P., John Madden. You’re now a legend. I have about 20 video games that are named after you. I have Madden NFL 2001 through Madden NFL 2021. I will eventually get Madden NFL 2022 and beyond. You were such a memorable person. And even though it’s sad😔to see you go, but at least you’re now reunited with your original sports commentator partner, Pat Summerall.

I haven't played a Madden NFL game since the Genesis days. I remember how awesome they were considering I'm from the UK and we aren't that much into NFL. I have never played anything since Genesis and what I've seen of the games now between PS3 and PS4, they went the FIFA way and just same old, same old. Instead of taking advantage of the current hardware and trying to make massive improvements in gameplay and other things they just profit, profit, profit.
RIP to the legend that is John Madden

15:05, yeah Madden 98 was so quick and updated that they kept the Madden 97 backgrounds on the play screens. When I used to run a former YT Channel, The Lancaster City Dragonrats I covered this in 2007 on CZcams. When I saw that for the first time when I got this game in October 1997 it made me want to puke and realized I got ripped off, traded it in and got Madden 98 for the PS1 and a huge change happened to my gaming life.

Then playing Madden on the Mega Drive.
I know today the new consoles are amazing.
I am lucky enough to own both next gen consoles and there are some great games.
But back in the day, the games seemed made with REAL love, REAL passion and because the developers wanted to release a great FINISHED game.
These days, they seem rushed, unfinished and only made in a way that they can get more money out of the gamer once they own the game.
    Great times and great memories

I'll be honest, given my particular interest in video games, I never really got hooked on the Madden games like my brother did. Tecmo Superbowl is still the best game from that era. It was the first console game to have injuries, substitutions and a full season with playoffs and a Superbowl. The thing I liked about Madden is they just improved upon some of those things. I used to love the ambulance that would come on the field and run over everyone lol. I also remember if you did a sweep play and got behind the defense all you had to do was spam the high step button and they couldn't stop you.

I did't know that Madden himself was involved in the development of the games.
EA can have a lot of bad things but one of it's best points is that they keep releasing their sport titles for consoles for some years after their first party companies stopped making games them. Yes, it is often just the same game with an updated rooster but for those fans who love the genre is enough.

My Dad bought it and loved playing it, but it was too hard for me as an 8 year old kid haha, probably because I didn't understand football that well. I really got into Madden when Madden '98 or '99 hit the Sega Saturn. Used to rent it a lot. Then when I finally got my PS2, Madden NFL 2003 had me hooked, and I bought nearly every entry until Madden 25 for the PS3. I haven't played a single one since sadly. RIP to you Coach Madden. 🏈🕊️

While I couldn't stand listening to John commentate on an actual live NFL broadcast, these Genesis games were a big reason I wanted the system. Started with Madden 93, which blew me away at the time. It didn't matter what phase of the game it was; offense, defense, or special teams, it was always fun. It was even more exciting the following year when a full season was implemented. Spent a lot of hours of my young adult life playing these.
