The weirdest thing with that myth is that that exact same plot point shows up in an ancient Egyptian story, where Ra the sun-god is angry and shuts himself in his tent but the goddess Hathor takes off her dress and dances and then everyone around, including Ra, laughs it off and calm down. I've always found it strange that two such different cultures so far from each other would share such a specific story element.

The first game was so beautiful, and it set up the promise of such a beautiful franchise…and then Jak II happened and everything went to the intersection of grimdark and tedious. Sigh…To be fair, Jak 3 tried to sort of combine the two games - the whole thing was basically what Yahtzee described the Prince of Persia trilogy to be, that is to say, a gold egg, followed by a bronze egg because grimdark, and then a silver egg that tried to combine what was good about the first two eggs but just ended up being okay - but then Jak 3 also had Count Veger, and any game with a character that is that stupidly cruel and simultaneously sanctimonious is automatically not a good one. >.> Like, he wasn't even a love-to-hate-him villain, he was just a thing to purely hate, hating him didn't even feel good, what the fuck Naughty Dog? Jak X was fun, though…sad it never got included in the trilogy re-release. V_V
Also, the "HD re-release" of the trilogy fucked up the beauty of the first game. In the first game, you could watch the sun rise and set and make up constellations in the night sky; in the re-release, at least on PS3, the sky was mostly a gray dome of varying shades. That made me mad, because my favorite thing to do in the first game was watch the sunrise from the top of the monuments on Sentinel Beach. >.> I just felt like that warranted commenting on.

And so God looked at him and went, "Well fix it then, shitlord, then I'll think on it."
And then said Really Nice Swell Guy spent several lifetimes going about doing precisely that.
In the story, this guy was a very peaceful scholar. In the game, he wears midriff armor and carries a big U-shaped blade that he dices dudes up with. If that's not your first red flag, I really don't know what to tell you. (Though I personally enjoy the game, because I'm a bad person like that.)

I feel like the PC release fixes the big issue of the game being. Drawing with the brush is really easy and feels like a natural extension of being a god with a celestial brush when you're using a mouse rather than a tedious chore which I imagine it would be with a controller.
Also, if you dash/dodge before you start moving in a direction, you start sprinting immediately. The game does not feel slow at all if you do this. Once you start buying Mermaid coins or get Mist Warp(19-20 hrs into the game) or the whirlpool-thingy technique (Maybe 10-13 hrs into the game), you rarely have to spend more than a minute running somewhere.
EDIT: Not to mention the demon claw minigame during loading screens, which gives you something to do while the game loads.

even with its faults, okami is just a nice relaxing game to play.
combat is varied, since you can use 3 kinds of attack and secondary attack tools.
Movement is great, amaterasu is fast, jumping doesn't slow you down, and the fastest way to get from place to place (besides mermaid pools and mirror teleports) is just running. no spamming the roll button or spamming sidehops.
    the story is great
the characters are interesting, all with their own personalities
and the game takes a long ass time to beat, even if you know what your doing.
one of my favorite details is in the first orochi fight, where each head has its own personality that is only conveyed through how they fight.
for example, fire is serious, earth is an idiot (literally fights you by bashing his skull into the ground), and water will create a pool of water to drown you, then he immediately puts his face in the water and blows bubbles,. just having a good time.

I think the best way to see Okami is how it swims in a huge ocean of Japanese folklore and mythology. From the whole game being literally sumi-e art, with Ukiyo-e art cutscenes, and a wonderful music to boot, the game got it good on the artistic front and lore/references. It doesn't however shine in the tutorial and sidekick departments. The idea at first is to be pretty clear at what your controls are and what you can do, what are your base physical limits and what are the big mechanics of the whole game. Which explains the lengthy explanations from Issun. Speaking of which, he's a real blabber mouth and has a big tendency to repeat important words or the entire reason why the player is doing a part of the adventure. Most of the time, it really feels like too much unnecessary hand-holding and text, which definitely starts to drag on in specific parts, while being moderately annoying overall. The game heavily relies on both you getting up to date with your Fan Menu to see your brush skills in more details and whatever scrolls and texts you got on your journey, and for you to let your curiosity show you different ways to use your powers in combat and while journeying. For those reasons alone, a lot of text from Issun could be shortened, better worded to give subtle hints, or completely removed. Then again, the reason why Issun talks so much is to give him reactions, life, a means to build a character, however the way it was implemented didn't quite portray that.
The gameplay of Okami is pretty fluid, the transition between the brush and physical interactions seamless, moving around and jumping is a perfect mix of giving the sensation of weight without impeding on control. The replacement of dungeon items with brush powers that can be used pretty much infinitely and in varied scenarios truly makes it a wonderful design choice for this game. By clearing dungeons your powers grow, by helping NPCs your powers grow, by exploring your powers grow, by being altruistic and restoring the land the player's main character grows powerful and helps them in their journey. The game is designed to reward exploration and story progression by unlocking new abilities that are inherent to the character, and are only limited by the player's creativity rather than ammunition or magic gauges. Yes, brush powers require Ink Pots to be used, but those recharge over time, and there are ways to increase the amount of pots and recharge time. Having a lot of brush techniques also implies a need for ink management. Should you try to create a ravaging inferno that costs 3 ink pots but you can't draw for a few seconds, or slow down time and make a bomb for 1 pot each and use your own armament of Divine Instruments to slay your foes? Should you wait a few seconds to get another ink pot or use the last one in an attempt to deal a finishing blow? Ink management, after a lot of battles against demons, almost becomes second nature when playing this game, and the way this whole brush mechanic is implemented is excellent for both combat and adventure scenarios.
Speaking of Divine Instruments, these items are the weapons of the main character. The game has a total of 3 types of weapons: Reflectors, Rosaries, and Glaives. The combat system allows the player to equip two weapons at all times, one as a main weapon and the other as a sub. The main weapon slot will extract the full potential of each type of weapons. For Reflectors, that is a constant close-quarters assault dealing a moderate amount of damage. For Rosaries, it is a rapid-hitting "whip" (or two) to attack targets at a distance, useful to build up combo hits and Godhood. For Glaives, it is a small but devastating mid-range Barrage of slicing attacks, that varies in power based on how long the weapon is charged before each hit. The sub weapon slot will instead use each weapon as an extra aid in battle. For Reflectors, the weapon is brought up front of the character, blocking heavy and ranged attacks like a shield, and become a counter move on physical attacks, as well as restore health and extract a Demon Fang on perfect blocks. For Rosaries, the weapon becomes either a rapid fire ranged projectile attack for chip damage, or a full blown buckshot for close, instant big damage. For Glaives, the weapon is either a fencing style strike that pierces through enemies, or an upward slash to cut through a single target, followed with a mid-air sweeping attack, both styles being chargeable for heavier damage. Being able to mix and match combinations of weapons offers the player a way to fine-tune their armament to match their preferred play style while exorcising demons.
There are other gameplay elements in this game, like consumable items and permanent artifacts to add specific attributes to the character. There are also Dojo techniques, which develop the character's combat skills, weapon skills, and adventuring skills without going through tech trees and point systems. Even the brush techniques can be improved, to the point where the player can summon elements at will without a source. Fast travel in the game is a commodity, as such a certain purchase of a specific item is needed to cross the land quickly, and only at specific spots. There's also fishing mini-games that allows the player to essentially fish for money (or pleasure) with simple mechanics. The variety in this game gives a little bit of everything to suit the taste of many different action-adventure players.
I'd go through the story aspect of the game, but I am personally not adept (and awake) enough to talk in-depth about it. You can expect a trilogy of sorts, the game separated in 3 distinct arcs in the ultimate quest for the main character to purge the land of darkness and bring beauty, light and life instead. It isn't stellar per-say, but it makes for a good incentive to progress, filled with its mysteries about each character encountered, and what their actual goals, resolve, and pasts are all about.
Overall, the experience of Okami remains pleasant and beautiful, even if some aspects of its game design are getting a bit outdated or simply not well implemented. With a wonderful combat system, a wonderful brush mechanic, amazing art style, amazing music, and a lot of exploration incentives, Okami keeps being a timeless work of art.

I remember when I played the game and probably had about 20-30 hours in it and I finally beat what I thought to be the 'final boss' but then they're like. Oh wait, you only beat like half the game. My mind was exceptionally blown.
Also the combat is still pretty decent. I played the HD version on the ps3 a ways back after I bet the ps2 even more a ways back. I had lots of fun with the combat, especially going for the no damage S ranks. Perfectly timing a counter or a dodge, and then finishing them off by cutting them in half with a perfectly drawn brush cut? Are you kidding me? Feels good man.

Not sure if anyone else pointed this out - but the "sprinting takes too long to charge up" complaint is instantly dismissed when you consider that you can charge into the second stage (and very close to the final speed) of sprint by tapping the Attack button (X for Xbox controllers, Square for PS, you get the idea) while running around.
You can get to sprinting speed from a dead standstill pretty quickly that way.
Personal complaint, though. Don't like the removal of Clover Studios in both the opening splash credits and closing credits. Defunct company splinter or no - it was pretty disgusting for Capcom to cut them out.

I feel like you didn't touch upon the collectathon aspect of Okami, which completely removes any and all semblance to difficulty on a secondary playthrough (that is, getting the 99 stray beads and beat the game). Okami isn't for people who want insane action with a focus on high-ass combos like Devil May Cry, it's like a softer Castlevania/Zelda game with a *lot* of Japanese in-jokes aimed at their culture and their religions (they bring in characters who aren't wholly shinto inspired, some are taoistic/buddhistic and some are nods to western culture).
It's not a hard game, but I think calling it "slow" is an insult, because it can be fast paced if you want to. You don't need to do sidequests or exploration, you don't need to max out your brush techniques (you automatically learn the ones that are vital to finishing the game) and you don't need to actively heal every single cursed zone (aside from the big trees) to get through it. You can finish the game in less than 20 hours.
I'm pretty heavily biased in that Okami is one of my top ten games of all time, I can admit it has its flaws. But come on, taking exploding dumps on your enemies and twirling to run faster is pretty awesome.
    Also, Rao.

I never thought about trying to paint with the analog sticks as I played the Wii version and the DS sequel where the drawings were either motion controls or literally just drawing it on the screen.

I will say, I played this game when it came out in 2006, and I've bought every remaster since. This review was a great way to understand the game without nostalgia glasses, and I'm glad that people can see a more objective review and not one solely basking it in glory.

It's a boring game that is 90% hiding 8% BS and 2% fun. For some reason a lot of people like it.
Personally I only find it enjoyable with friends, but almost any game is fun with friends.

sammetju08 you have a point, but I must say the value is in the replayability with or without friends. The landscape might get boring but the encounters are always unique

The art and music is basically what makes Okami Okami. Without those things, it's a pretty shit affair, which is funny because the team behind it went on to make Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising and NieR: Automata, none of which even remotely have this problem.
Having said that, I will allow Okami to call itself art and forgive its gameplay, because it IS art. It's one of the best looking games ever made, even today.

In just about every thing they've made since becoming Platinum though the gamelplay is the only thing they have a hand in IshayuG, so of course they better be doing that part well.
They didnt decide the soundtrack of Metal Gear or Automata for instance, that was up to the person who is actually behind the game itself, which is why Automata simply had the same composer as the first Nier did. In Automata's case though, they helped in some of the character designs to an extent but certainly not all of ti. I imagine the other games were much the same.

IshayuG The gameplay is great, what the hell are you talking about? Its not hard for the most part, but its a great game graphically AND gameplay wise. This game doesn't get all of its praise just because of its artistic side.

You have to admit that the camera, auto-targeting (in devil gate trials) and slow dialogue are shit tought. Apart for that its a pretty solid game with a gentle learning and difficulty curve.
