NEW Warrior STAFF Open World Build

- Now that we have had the 2nd major update of the current Secrets of the Obscure expansion, we get to play with new weapons on all 9 professions. Warriors gained access to the Staff, which is primarily a support weapon with a lot of healing, crowd control, mobility and boons baked in.
But we can transform this into one of the smoothest (solo) open world weapons the game has on offer for Warriors. Instead of the usual single elite spec build guide, we'll go over 2 builds: a Spellbreaker that will zip across the battlefield and dispatch enemies in a single combo, and a Berserker that can stand toe to toe with any champion or bounty and take care of them with relative ease.
Staff has a few challenges when it comes to the open world, it feels rather sluggish without quickness, and has relatively low damage modifiers. Luckily this can be easily fixed with the use of Jade Bot Protocols. If you don't own End of Dragons, or you simply don't want to bother with those, there are a few changes to the builds that you can make to preserve this smooth playstyle.
A final challenge was generating enough Adrenaline so that we can use out Burst Attack on cooldown. This made the usual traitlines, such as Discipline or Defense, rather useless. While both provide excellent damage, neither help if we want to mainly use staff in the open world. Arms, on the other hand, can guarantee we will always be at maximum adrenaline when it's time to use our burst attack!

I have been playing your staff spellbreaker build in PvE for about a week in SoS using exotic weapons and armor. This build is very strong and I plan to try it out in WvW with dagger, warhorn. Thanks for the recommendations.
Glad you like it! I've been combining it with Relic of the Cavalier lately, since they kinda nerfed the Jade Bot Protocols (fixed the ICD), which covers a ton of boons, but you gotta mount up.
I have a few of your builds for several of my alts and so does my wife. This warrior staff build is fun and the survivability is insane. I love it. I had tried one other build with staff prior to this one and I was going to put it on the back burner, but when I saw warrior staff build from Phandrel I had to try it and I am not disappointed. Thanks you .
Thank you, that's so kind! I refused to put it on the backburner, I was either going to theorycraft until I went mad, or until I found a build. Thank god the latter of the 2 happened :P
will be definitely trying it out. btw, which build is disabled friendly?
I would say the Spellbreaker one, especially with jade bot protocols.
You can limit your input to auto attack + f1 (burst), and if you want to add skills, incorporate staff 2 and 4.
You could even swap out the shout and bull's charge for Dolyak Signet (- incoming damage) and signet of stamina (faster endurance, which also is a condi cleanse when activated).
love these. It very refreshing to not see another "meta" build :)
have you checked dps on the golem, cause I have. instead of taking Arms, try Defense 3 3 3 on your general open world version. I got more dps out of it, cause that line gives you 10% more dps with foes on weakness, which burst gives 8 + 3 secs of. And you also get 10% more when you have stability, which you not only get from strength, but also when you disable, which is another perma 10% more. Defense also allows you to fill up adrenaline fast to get the first burst out after your second attack.
I thought Arms was better too first, but i think due to the staff lower power scaling, having the % damage buffs works out for more.
I play Staff Warrior a lot, cause it feels like a glaive, very fun.
I mainly went for arms as I felt it was smoother for my adrenaline gain in general. I have spent way too long on the golem, but I guess I'm going in for another round of experimenting :)
I love the staff in the open world, despite some of its flaws. The gameplay is so satisfying, and I can cruise through harder fights without much thought.
@@phandrel the second column of the defense line has a trait called "Merciless Hammer". Despite its name, it also allows you to get 7 adrenaline on any skill's disable, so you can easily ramp up towards that first burst with that using staff 4 and/or that charge. Give it a try, I actually tried doing more quickness, but with what I had to give up for it, it ended up same-ish dps, just quicker attacks.
I spent some time on the golem, you're absolutely right that Merciless Hammer does a good job keeping up adrenaline. I don't know why, but it in earlier experiments I remember being a bit more starved than what it turns out to be.
I do see to get more consistent results with arms on my spellbreaker, but I'm considering taking out arms for defense on the berserker build. I'll add both iterations in the pinned comments later today.
Thanks a lot for the feedback! Truly appreciate it.
@@phandrel ye you made me doubt so i ran tests again. Mind you I use Rune of Surging and Relic of Midnight, cause I prefer consistent fury uptime and the movement speed (like you). Might has more power anyway.
strength-arms-spellbreaker is 6.4k dps without any external boons or conditions added to the boss
strength-defense-spellbreaker is 6.9k.
Now If you take Peak Performance instead then you can bump the dps to 7.5k, but i never saw it worth doing, due to stability being very useful.
I run without quickness traits btw, but quickness tests had similar dps.
Hi :D Can I use GS or Bow as my swap weapon? And if so, do I need to change anything? Thank you Phandrel!
You could indeed play this with Greatsword, I will make a bit of an update guide once the new balance patch hits, though. The nerfs to the jade bot protocols hurt the build somewhat. I do have alternatives on discord, but those are dual mace/hammer.
I wouldn't recommend longbow, as there's no real condi with this particular build.
I'm using crusader stats and damn that's so fun!!
They definitely nailed the flow and feel of staff on warrior, from that auto-attack finish, to the speed at which you can pull mobs.
HERE IT IS. Wohoo
This one took time, but 100% worth it for the fun facter alone :D
Don't mind me getting back to this build but is there a way to make the jade bot protocol buffs last longer than 15 min? Going back to Kaineng every 15 min is a pain in the ass 😩
You can stack them up to 2h15 min :) just grab a couple of extra batteries or ziplines.
czcams.com/video/oeEr0wdHmbU/video.htmlsi=8aIkycs_VcdJsuZR in this video, around 7.15 min you can see one of the most convenient spots to quickly stack them.
@@phandrel Omg, game changer!!! You're the best ♥
@phandrel Hi there. Returning player here after many years of. Its soooo overwhelming for me to be back and im looking for an easy to play and a good OW solo build to start my returning journey with. Between this and your Herald build (which to me looks the most fun and intersting), which one would you recommend? Great vids btw, glad i found you. Much love
Welcome back! I would definitely say herald, as it's suited for more situations and revenant has so much versatility.
@@phandrel Thank you so much. I trust your experience and knowledge so Herald it is then. Thanks for your answer buddy
Have u tried staff /sword horn in pvp ? Man it will be meta
Not yet, I want to start dabbling more in pvp, so I'm definitely gonna try that out :D
Hey! Does this build work with celestial gear?
It's not ideal due to the build not generating that many conditions - only the occasional bleed.
You'll be sacrificing around 20% of dps, this is one of the cases I'd really recommend going berserker/marauder/dragon/any other power based combo with your crit chance at 100%.
What jade bot attachments are you supposed to run?
Generally, I run the Jade sliver and treasure hunter modules.
Might and magic would be better than the Jade slivers, but I am saving up certain account bound currencies. And I like opening chests 😅
Can you make a video whit a Revenant scepter easy dps build please ? Awesome videos you make btw :)
Thanks! I'm working on the build for revs 😀 I'll have videos out for each new weapon that I haven't covered yet soon, though.
Finishing those before I retake some of my other content.
1:20 pretty sure you got these backward, It's Spellbreaker that wants Aggressive Onslaught for Quickness, Berserker already has Heat The Soul for Quickness generation. I'm almost certain that Berserker's Power + Heat The Soul is a bigger DPS boost than Blood Reaction + Aggressive Onslaught, since Berserker's Power is a massive +21% strike damage multiplier.
Just checked it - I wasn't using Aggressive Onslaught on Spellbreaker as I only use that build w/ Jade Buff Protocols. Without those, you're absolutely right and that would be the trait to take.
As for the Berserker's Power as a berserker, you seem to be right as well! The dps difference is significant enough to swap those around. I'll update the build links later today. Thanks for keeping an eye out!
Which Jade Bot protocols are you talking about?
You can charge up Offensive/Defensive Protocols in EoD maps for up to 2h15 min, which will provide you with nearly all boons when entering combat. For Warrior Staff this is a pretty huge QoL for its damage due to the rather low base modifiers.
I made a guide a while ago that talks about stacking there fast (time stamp will take you to the right spot on the video): czcams.com/video/oeEr0wdHmbU/video.html
What's the self-buffed/self-debuffed dps like on dummy?
You really want to bring Jade Bot Protocols due to the staff's low damage modifiers. If you drop below 25 might/vulnerability, you'll end up somewhere around 9k dps as the Berserker build on the golem. The protocols adds another 2-3k on top of that.
If you swap to axes every time on cooldown, you'll get more in the neighborhood of conventional builds. There's no reason not to, if I'm honest, but I'm enjoying my time trying to squeeze everything I can out of the new weapons for now.
@@phandrel I guessed as much! Considering its sustain still impressive. Thanks :)
What foods would you use?
Regular Power Food is fine - if you want a cheaper alternative, then something like Steak and Asparagus does the trick. Now that jade protocols have been nerfed into the ground, it might also be worth it to consider using food that gives might, to help maintain 25 stacks, which will do a lot for your damage.
@@phandrel Thank you.
will it be ok to use scholar instead of fireworks ?
Yep! You'll have more burst damage, but boons will fall of a bit more quickly, which for 90% of enemies won't really matter.
Impact or accuracy is better for sigil?
I went with impact with my marauder/dragon combo, as I already hit 100% crit chance.
You could replace more marauder pieces for dragon's, and go with accuracy. But the bonus from impact (vs knocked down/stunned foes) is active relatively often.
@@phandrel nice imma try it, thanks for the tips :D
could you make a axe thief that doesnt require you to stleath every single hit please
That one is in the works :) I actually had the idea of including a jade bot protocol and non-jade bot protocol version. The first one won't feature any form of stealth.
So I already know what build I will use to kill 1k mobs for the achievement. :D
You'll burn through it :D
Hi, as much as its fun build, it can only stay "fun". I tested it on my warr, but dmg is just too low. Protocol certainly is needed not even to do extra dmg, but also without it its no dmg. I did story (last 2 chapters) and doing it was really bad. I agree that mechanic is cool, but thats all, its support weapon and will definitely shine in this area. As open world dmg weapon? it no for me. I see this in wvw esepcially as tanky support/shout buffer (aoe pull is always fun :D). I tested dmg with full ascended marauder armor/jewellery setup+ ascended staff and proper runes. Please dont take this as personal attack, im still using some of your builds Phandrel, and also i wanna do celestial willbender too (but gonna w8 till 19 march, hope nerfbat will be small). Current staff is too weak for open world/full dmg builds
Peace
Yeah, I agree. While fun, this won't be the ideal way to play.
My goal is mainly to try to make them work, both for myself and people who don't mind giving up some efficiency in exchange to play the weapon for the time being.
It works rather OK in normal mob farms or t1 rifts. But there's definitely better out there.
