  • If you believe the news, a torrent of electric cars is coming soon. And not “electrified” cars but true EVs with only batteries and electric motors. If that’s accurate, where does it leave the old-fashioned hybrid like this Prius?

    my corolla lease was up earlier this year. I test drove the corolla hybrid, Prius plug-in, and I end up with the Camry hybrid LE. It also gets 50mpg and it is a much better car to drive, smoother, quieter, and faster, I just can't think of any reason why anyone would drive a Prius...

      Absolutely....The Camry or Corolla hybrids are no brainlers in the styling dept.

      @Steve Jones Camry trunk is huge, and rear seats can fold down. I thought about Prius prime since it can be charged, but Prime's trunk space is very small. Regular Prius is bigger but not worth it at all IMO.

      I totally agree with you, toyota should just make a full EV prius or a 100 miles EV range prius prime

    Honest review Steve. You are absolutely correct. A prius is losing, or has been losing steam for a while now. Although I am sure if you come back in the winter, and review it once more, it may help buyers decide if it is worth it. I just checked out a video TheTopher did on the same vehicle, and while his driving was on a snowy course? it's videos like those that may save the Prius from Extinction, sadly. Or so what the enthusiasts would like to see. If you can call a Prius an "Enthusiast." To me that sounds like an OXYMORON lol
    Great reporting as usual though...

    I know it’s ugly, but I kind of want one! It’s just perfect for me. I drive 100 miles roundtrip to work each day. I need AWD in the winter (43mph on a snow/ice covered road is reasonable), I like going on road trips and EVs are not good for that. Yes, the RAV-4 hybrid can do the same, but this gets 10mph more.

    I bought a new '19 LE awd-e Prius for after looking for the least-expensive awd commuter car with the best fuel economy: nothing comes close to this car given those parameters.
    My year-round average fuel economy is 60 us mpg, with snow tires used for four months each year -- I got Michelin Xi3s. In the summer with the excellent stock tires I often get 70-75mpg; far better than advertised.
    The snow/ice traction is impressive. I commute over a twisty mountain pass, and the awd-e doesn't fight for traction like fwd cars did on the same climb: it just keeps going with no fuss.
    This isn't a sports car nor was it designed to be, but it moves along well if you want to press down the pedal.
    The only mod I intend to make is the 1.5" lift kit from @t for better winter ground clearance.

    People prefer the Prius especially when gas prices were high; it's still popular in California. However, Toyota has placed hybrid powertrains from the Camry to the Highlander. That's why hybrid shoppers are going to Camry or RAV4 (and especially RAV4) if they want a hybrid and not considering a Prius. A few years ago, Toyota thought that the Prius would be their best seller especially when they added the larger V and smaller C variants. It hasn't. I'm one of the few who thought the exterior is okay. However, for me, the interior setup with the speedometer on the infotainment display and not in the sight of the driver is off-putting as a car shopper.

    I didn’t hear a word between “Rondo” and “Soul.” 😜
    Seriously, excellent review of a car that has intrigued me as a someday possibility for a young driver. Maybe a Subie (the other car you’ll see in VT) or one of those hybrid Corollas are a better bet.

    Perhaps Tesla will experience the "Prius effect" as well, as electric tech normalizes across the industry

    I went to Toyota for a corolla hybrid
    Drove off with the Camry se hybrid
    Sacrificed in mpg for amenities and I would have looked at the Prius BUT that beeping sound when in reverse was a huge turn off for me, no idea why the Prius is the only Toyota hybrid to have that but it’s ridiculous

  • @BTC909
    @BTC909 Před 4 lety

    Cancel this when more trims of the Corolla Hybrid are available, keep the Prime around until the Corolla Cross (should be a Hybrid) is available and cancel the Prime as well.

    in 5 to 10 years time, people would be putting on lift kits on these and do serious off-roading - like what they're doing with Gen 2 Priuses now.

  • @97I30T
    @97I30T Před 4 lety +4

    No, the Prius is not relevant anymore for 3 main reasons: 1) Other hybrids and electric cars have gotten much better. 2) Toyota alienated a huge chunk of potential Prius buyers by making the 4th gen Prius as hideous as possible. 3) The other hybrids in Toyota’s lineup are just more appealing. Most people would rather have a RAV4 hybrid over a Prius these days. With Toyota’s other hybrids you get nearly all of the benefits of the Prius without the ugly Prius wrapper.

  • @baldheadlogic
    @baldheadlogic Před 4 lety

    I respect the hybrid tech that the Prius brought to Toyota's US lineup. The Corolla hybrid alone makes this car look bad. Let's not even talk Camry, Rav4, and even Highlander Hybrids.

      Inge Nunis I’m a proud owner of a 2019 Prius awd and I can tell you price per pound with reliability, effeciency, cargo space and amazing eye sight with that big windshield nothing beats it right now. How can you compare a Tesla and a Prius. One is like 2-3 times it’s price. People be rational and intelligent for ounce please.

    Let’s forget about relevance for a sec. The Prius is useful, effective hybrid technology realized......always has been. The real question to me is: Why is it so damn ugly? This eyesore has ZERO chance showing up in my driveway.

      Any chinese EV’s are no ‘match’ against Tesla’s 3’s and Y’s..also, Tesla’s Shanghai factory can’t make 3’s fast enough, plus Y’s are just starting... I’m overly confident Tesla will out perform any competition going forward- buy Tesla stock now, don’t wait.
