      I feel like sit on top kayaks have made people far more confident to get into rough water with zero training or preparedness. The thought process seems to be that since it won't sink and you can't get trapped in the cockpit you'll be fine. But those things can be a mare to get flipped back up the right way even in calm water, since they're so heavy and blocky. Much harder than doing a roll-and-recover in a sit in kayak imo.

    • @Chris-ew9mh
      @Chris-ew9mh Před rokem +1

      I was confused why they didn't attempt to get their paddles and roll that kayak back over. If you can't recover from a rollover you should not go beyond flat waste deep water.

    • @suep9445
      @suep9445 Před rokem +1

      @@Chris-ew9mh That's not true. Rolling is NOT required of any kayaker, though it can be an important skill for advanced paddling conditions. And it depends on the kayak (don't get me started on recreational kayaks without any interior floatation). The most basic kayaking skill is the wet exit and re-entry. You flip over, you learn to flip it back up while you're in the water and get back in, and you practice it until it's second nature - which also means second nature to hold onto your paddle. This was a sit-on-top kayak, apparently a double. It's nearly impossible to roll a single or double sit-on-top without thigh straps and lots of practice. But, they should have been able to flip it upright and get back in. Certainly it's hard with waves that big - that's why it's important for kayakers to practice, practice, practice self and assisted rescue in calm and rougher water. I suspect they have no experience in self-rescue - or at least not in rough water. To their credit, they were wearing PFDs that seemed to be adjusted properly - though the PFD on the one clinging to the top of the kayak seemed a little bit loose. At least their PFDs were not riding up over their ears. AND they stayed with the kayak.
