I was riding on a pleasure-boat doing some sightseeing on the Gulf Coast once. The captain was retired from the Coast Guard. He was telling us how he would inspect fishermen's boats. There was a thing where a lot of boats would put rancid garbage in the freezers along with the other items, to keep it from going bad during travels. He told us this one boat that he inspected and noticed the lack of trash for a lengthy voyage that seemed unexpected. So he fined them for that aspect alone. They were likely trying to fake their books for other purposes related to fishing or drugs.

It was reported in the news that these kids have come forward and turned themselves in to authorities. The ones responsible could face penalties of up to 5 years in jail and/or a $50,000 fine for dumping their trash into the ocean.

Some of these boats designs seem unsafe especially the ones where the bow is sloping towards the water. Doesn't it defeat the purpose of safety?

The things that frustrate me the most about these videos is the indifference. The captain seems to have to his passengers, the fact that he allows them to ride in the bow, of course, children, and dogs, with no life preserver on. It bothers me to see adults without life preservers too, but you know they know better.

I don't think jail time is the correct answer for this one. I think many hundreds of hours of beach clean up and other sorts of water environment recovery would be in order. And, everyone gets to write a huge essay about environmental impact, no fun till it's done. Also, maybe put together a public forum, where these clowns get to be on a panel, and people from the community get to address (harrangue) them until everyone's had their say.
