The MSI Claw [GRIP & GAME] is the first gaming handheld that I've seen to run on INTEL architecture. And that's not the only strange decision they've made with this one...

Apparently I got the amount of RAM WRONG SOMEHOW??? This one only has 16gb. I’ll try to remove any mention of RAM with the CZcams editor. Might take a bit to do. If you see some weird jump cuts, thats why.
it's because it leaked saying it had 32gbs of ram so your brain was like damn this thing has 32gbs of ram lol. i think they just decided to save money by releasing with only 16gb which will hurt them in the end. a lot of modern games are requiring 16gb of ram so it essentially didn't future proof it very much. what a shame i was hyped for this thing.
Edit: They did say there would be 4 different versions and only released 3
@@kramerrichardson6008if you go on msi's international site it says it has 32gb. i think they meant it supports 32gb, but it's unclear.
But then it wasn't the extra RAM that made it get a higher performance score after all.
@@DavidFilskovyeah that affects his reflections on the working of the hardware itself but not the overall performance. Kind of a relief that intel with that TDP can at least squeeze the performance without cheesing with ram lol.
Still meh, I’ll stick with my steam deck, although I want a windows handheld to mess with. I got my gf the oled steam deck and seeing them compared, I’m not buying any handheld without OLED. The difference is crazy.
@@DavidFilskov in synthetic benchmarks the intel chip is more powerful than the z1 extreme, it just fights the igpu for power in games so it gets rough performance without really high wattage. I would like to see someone turn off the majority of the performance cores to see what kind of gains we can see shifted to the igpu.
the reason amd chips are used more in gaming handhelds is because AMD generally has had a more superior integrated graphics solutions. AMD makes APUs that can actually game, intel APUs haven't really been able to do so until recently. not because a "cost thing"
He explains that right after saying the cost thing lol
@@arthurdurhamhe also says intel chipsets run hotter when typically the opposite is true since AMD processors don't usually distribute processing between cores at low loads.
They also seek to care a lot more about user experience then any of the other companies. Nvidia is pretty much Apple when it comes to locking basic features behind a more “supreme” device.
@@snerttti'm not sure why you say that, it's really easy to see the main thread bouncing around on my 3700x. on my 12600k machine it's hard to see it cuz intel doesn't do core parking or boost individual cores.
As someone who has used Intel CPUs in early 2000s without a graphics card, I can testify Intel sucks in the graphics department. They are overtly anemic and continue to be pushed to the laptop market, severely handicapping their potential unless you want to shell out extra cash for a GPU that's going to get thermal throttled anyway.
AMD APUs perform much better than what Intel does, who just laxes on the graphics processing field.
The Claw hurt itself in confusion.
As many glitches as gen 1
Nice 😂

Typing this on an MSi GS63VR 7RG Stealth Pro that, just a few days ago, I had to REMOVE THE MOTHERBOARD on just to clean lint out of the fans. Not only do you have to do this to access the fans, but to get to the RAM slots and SSD.
MSi, unlike every other manufacturer, seems to actively enjoy making their devices unnecessarily difficult for the end user to service. On the plus side, other than needing fan servicing every couple of years to remove built up dust from the guts and replacing the battery when it wears down, it's been a powerhouse of a machine for the roughly 6 years I've had it.
The dust filters on the ROG Ally are absolutely great, no dust whatsoever inside the fans or cooler finns after a couple of months.
@@samserious1337 my house is unfortunately fairly dusty due to pets and wood heat, but even so I only end up getting the "grinding sound of death" about every two years when actual lint balls finally build up large enough to bump the fan blades. Popping things open and cleaning it out gets them back to running cool and quiet, it's just baffling that they made the decision to make accessing those often-accessed parts require such severe disassembly when literally every other manufacturer makes their machines easy for even complete beginners to service. Servicing this laptop feels like rocket surgery by comparison.
They also tend to load their computers with bloatware as well.
@@mortmortmort8908 every company loads their computers with bloatware. Its too simple to reset base windows that this should honestly no longer be a point of contention for *any* products. And no man, I really dont want to hear about some mom and pop pc company that honors your notions of whats acceptable. For 99% of users , its 99% not a problem. Just remove the programs you dont want, or just reset windows. Takes 5 minutes.
For my MSI Sword I have to unscrew literally more than 15 screw just to access the back to install an SSD, only to learn that A: the SATA slot was completely removed on the models without warning or reason and B: only the more expensive models have 2 NVME slots. Great.
The aesthetic is like that old school gamer look from 15 years ago, where everything was chunky and black + red, and EVERYTHING needed a grille on it.
Thats still how msi stuff looks. I didnt wanna buy an MSI motherboard for my pc because it has a glass panel and the msi boards just look so cringy
@@peytonblanscet6035
Yeah, I got a stealth MSI laptop and it totally brought the look in line, I don't mind the sleeker "mid 2010s matrix" look when it's sleek like that, but some of those non stealth ones looked like a PS3 got attacked by Venom and became a gamer.
it's hideous
I actually like the look more than the ally I like that old chunky gamer look if only it preformed better it will probably get a lot better after a few major updates intel drivers are usually more stable than AMD it’s one of the reasons AMD struggles with Nvidia the main problem these windows hand helds face is ironically windows 11 it’s a terrible choice for a portable device.
Give me the older late 90s office computer beige colors because that's how Intel graphics technology is.
$800 and you can’t even upgrade its storage. OUCH…that’s very disappointing.
Wait till you learn about Apple laptops...
@@fumangus69i don't wanna learn about apple laptops.
Meanwhile Steam Deck has instructions and warns that if you mess up, that's on your ass.
that’s literally not true
it has a microsd slot and you can change the internal ssd, its just harder than on rog ally or steam deck
@@SKANER__ thats the point. its harder to upgrade stuff on the claw then on other handhelds of its caliber.
“Intel run hot and need power”
Well, well, well now the the turntables..
Yeah that is such an old Intel fan boys argue to amd decades ago
It's come full circle. Pentium 4's, Especially Prescotts, were insanely hot. (compared to Athlon XP/64) So hot Dell/Intel created a new motherboard and case form factor which didn't stick. thank god (BTX)
@@godhero2566when you got (pun intended) cooked for one thing for so long either figure out the solution or suffer as the eternal laughing stock lol
more cores
Bare in mind, the MSI Claw ISN'T the same price as the Z1 Extreme handhelds.
There IS a Claw at $700USD, but that one is the lesser i5 variant. The i7 variant costs something like $750-800USD.
The major Flaw with Claw is the fact it used Intel
I love my legion go. Such an amazing device. I’ve had it almost a month and I use this thing everyday. I haven’t tried playing Fortnite or undisputed at max settings yet but my performance mode runs for 2 hours on full charge.
i had that EXACT thumbstick issue..... on steam deck. the original run of LCD models (mine was a Q3 first year version) actually had a lot of reports like this. most people (including me) just bought some cheap joystick protectors from ebay, little silicone rings that slip onto the joystick stem, and then you forget the problem ever happened. good to know my OLED deck had this problem sorted from the beginning tho
Yeah those protectors are great. I have them on my OLED and a nice side effect is that they stop the sound of the stick clacking against the plastic ring.
I love hearing your experiences with these devices. Love the content Bob.
Three for Three on the Not Recommended list. First it was Retro Game Corps, then The Phawx, now Mr. Wulff. This thing is gonna have an uphill struggle.
Thanks man. This info is helpful. I'm maybe possibly considering obtaining on of these units.
hello great to see this video finally come out
I gotta say that I love your thumbnails, they're always insteresting and well designed, and I appreciate that you don't do a dumb face in order to attract viewers
Even without all the vents and other holes, there's no way I'd take a portable PC/gaming device like that to a beach/boardwalk like Coney Island in NYC.
What settings were used in the benchmark? Or was it stock settings?
I didn't know this thing existed but hyped for the vid.
was waiting for you to review this piece of tech Mr Wulff nice👍
Handhelds are so cool and I hope they keep innovating!
Love the elegant black outlook and how you hold it looks very comfortable!
Your B Roll cinematography is awesome, makes the MSI Claw look really cool!
when the engineers were making it, i can't understand why they felt the need to even produce the 155 version, the processor robs way too much power from the igpu, this is a gaming machine so the extra p cores were just not worth it, if you want a fast processor, get a laptop? these are meant for gaming so they just don't need such a power hungry cpu. I'm disappointed because I've always been intel with my desktop builds.
also I am very sure that it only comes with 16gb of ram like the rog ally does, it would have been really smart of them to bump it to 32gb, but they didn't, we saw false benchmarks of the claw running with 32gb of ram but they must have deemed the performance gain to cost ineffective.
32gbs? I only see 16gb...
Yea i was confused here lol. I reviewed the device as well and all models have 16GB ram
yeah i think he was thinking about when the benchmarks were leaked before it's release it was showing 32gb of system memory but it officially released with only 16gb options.
I was looking for a 32 gb version. MSI’s website still says “up to 32 gb of RAM”.
@@christopherfeist1687 msi said there would be 4 models we have only seen 3
@@ToGrimmToWinmaybe it’s releasing later on?
Love the way you present it in the first few rolls. Look cool when you put all handhelds together. Still trying to get used with my Claw. Transferring mobile game on handheld is quite hard🤣
Please do a review on the Ayaneo Flip DS upon release 🙏
Wait how do you have a 32gb memory model, the only models announced so far and the only one's I see for sale only have 16gb of memory.
The look grows on me. After having it for awhile the heat doesn’t bother me, it mostly on the top side where it away from me. Also, performance might not be great in the beginning but they’ve been updating so far and performance are going up. Hopefully, with more updates I think it would do well in this platform.
I love how the most replayed moment is the moment immedietly after the sponsor, lol
The Claws charger looks like the exact same one we got with the ROG Ally in Australia
How is the gpu compared to Deck or Rog's?
Ayyyy I see you're also a "gentle leader" enjoyer. Isn't it amazing how much more comfortable our four legged friends are with it as a medium of communication instead of a collar? I love it and can't recommend enough.
Also major points towards valve for making their upgrade process for the Steam Deck as user friendly as possible, holy balls 16:35 was just cringe once you told us what all that was.
Not on new one they didn’t. They glued a wire under shield over ssd and a ribbon cable on top of that same shield. So getting to ssd means you risk tearing two important cables. Since this wasn’t case on lcd model I can’t help but feel they did this on purpose to make changing ssd harder and more riskier.
@@sly2792004 I was referring to the OLED models
Upgrade process on the Rog Ally and Legion Go is easy too
Not to demerit the deck`s upgradeability in any way, but last month I installed a 2tb ssd into my Ally, and it was increadibly simple. In fact, the most difficult parts were that I was bamboozled by the bottom middle screw which I initially thought was stripped but turned out to be captive, and the battery connector was fiddly to reconnect. Other than that, it was smooth sailing, and only took a couple of minutes
@@andreanastacio9548The thumbsticks aren't that hard to swap either on the ROG Ally
It will be nice to see how Intel works in a handheld after a few months with fixes. More competition is also good.
I'm surprised Acer haven't revealed any "Predator Handheld" yet, but perhaps they are waiting for price drop.
what's with the weird bar at the top of the video?
Always awaiting for the Wulff logo and raising the music appears
great video! hopefully with future updates from MSI/Intel we can see better performance. I love the design and feel of it!
My ROG Ally did not come with a case. Not sure where you got that from.
My Steamdeck OLED had one of those crunchy portions on the R stick too
Hey, I be playing HD2 in Steam Deck and its smooth and amazing
Poor MSI, it seems their first attempt is a failure mostly because they joined with team blue.
i don't understand why they went with intel. seems like the choice makes both companies look bad. maybe they're hoping to scoop up all the intel fanboys? are there still intel fanboys in 2024?
@@SB-pf5rccompetition is good. I’d bet it was cheaper for them. I hope they continue doing to use intel and cause intel to improve. That said heard nivida is working on one using their cpu/gpu. Know they make good gpus but only experience with their apus is underpowered switch
@@SB-pf5rc MSI wanted to do something different than everyone else to stand out, it's a pretty common tactic actually, unfortunately being different doesn't make you better.
@thegamerfe8751 Especially since Intel Arc graphics are becoming way better than it's UHD counterpart

Perfect timing for this vid; i just finished watching a 2230 ssd swap vid for these.
Hahahaha The ELT Prime one?! Because if it that's one, same here dude.
Great Stuff, as always!
When did it get 32gb?
The ad though. Woofden was just pure genius 👌
Not to take away from the L of the ssd under the fan but im assuming it was to avoid faster ssds from overheating which may not be possible in the other handhelds.
4:35 could your phone have tethered internet to get it going?
Interesting lens choices today.
I'll grab one because of the cooling perks you mentioned. Something less "toasty" suits long gaming sessions better.
The ally goes up to 30w on a turbo and you can technically further increase it into the 40w range manually if you felt like it
Sounds a lot like the launch of the ROG Ally last year and all the problems it had at launch. Hopefully some firmware updates will make it competitive
Tried the Claw - ergonomic grips, haptic feedback, and grip feel great! Thinking of snagging one for my birthday!😍
Love seeing some competition here (blue and orange) hahaha keeps things spicy!! I try it out in-store, gotta say, the feel is 🥰! I think comfort is key, right? everyone's got their own grip~ better try by yourself
Looks cool, feels cool + amazing display...can't wait to get one of these!
it is the biggest turd ever, buy two
“Freakish look” 😂 it does look a tad bit strange doesn’t it lol
10:39
How in the hell are you getting 60fps on helldivers on the steam deck? Mine cant push a consistent 30
Fascinating exterior design and great handheld experiences.
one of the biggest issues I see with these other non steam deck handhelds is the controls layout. It is entirely user preference but for me the dualshock-esque layout with sticks and buttons at equal heights and overall symmetry of the controls is a major W for the steam deck. None of these other handhelds seem to even offer parity with the SD controls either. 4 back paddles and two touchpads give me access to potentially 100 inputs, instantly, on other own. (seriously, radial menus on trackpads are op). it's a handheld console, i don't expect preformance to be very good, im firmly in the camp that a portable system should prioritize comfort and capability over raw processing power. essentially a "can it do it well" instead of "can it do it the fastest".
I owned an MSI laptop years ago. Let me guess, if you open it up to upgrade nvme, will it void the warranty? Is there a sticker on the last screw hole that says VOID?
Doesn’t matter, least in the US and other countries the sticker is unenforceable.
What's with the weird green effect on the edge of the screen throughout the video?
I bought it despote these rewievs. Ind 3rd day i love it. Best joystick of all handhelds, best grips (as SD). Downside is only battery. But i played only at home on chargers. So no big deal for me. In real world is ok in comparison rog ally price is enourmus, but ergonomy is much more better
You took this handheld to the BEACH?! No nonono. From my experience, it's not a good idea.
When I was a kid I went to Maine for vacation and went to Pemaquid Beach. It's August and it's cold outside and the water is even worse.
Through this boredom, I had to novel idea to bring my new Gameboy SP NES Edition to entertain me. Didn't quite used it as much as I thought however. But afterwards when I got home...
The sand had somehow entered in between the lens and the screen and I couldn't remove it. But the most damning was that the sand had eroded the NES design on top of the shell. I was pissed.
It doesn't matter how well you protect your electronics, the little bastard sands are coarse and rough and gets everywhere!
The changing benchmark numbers are most likely due to Windows power profile. Maybe it's in auto/balanced mode or whatever, you may want the max profile though.
After I tried it in the shop I decided to have it, is the best handheld design that feels great while holding it on hand.
So far, I haven't had any serious issues with the Claw since I mainly run FC24. Love its ergonomic as well. Hopefully there will be more driver updates that could allow me to run ultra settings on it
Why have you bought it and not the Rog Ally ?
Got one already😎 the grip is so comfy and it's actually quite light!
Can't it support thunderbolt for egpu support?
My left thumb sticks grinding on my Rog ally now. I never noticed it till you said and I looked though. I never push it all the way to the outside I guess. But it's probably those RGB light circles that aren't meant to be surrounding a thumb stick. Wrong material maybe.. but I thought all thumbsticks did that. I always used to notice White dust on my controller thumbsticks since forever. Dreamcast Xbox GameCube etc etc. Haven't noticed it on steam deck but I play my Rog ally way more. Hardly play my steam decks I have 2 LCDs
My ROG Ally also hurts hitself in the same way as the Claw :-( the outer ring of the joystick digs into the sticks plastic, couldn't they just make the sticks out of metal as in many other controllers?
Ahh the Lumix G85? Got the same for my primary video
So from what I've seen between all the different reviews is that on average, this thing barely beats out the Steam Deck Oled while set to twice the TDP and gets annihilated by the Z1E chips while costing as much as it does. I wonder how fast the price will plummet.
I liked the video because of that amazing segue to the sponsor 🤣🤣
so which handheld is the best ?
brilliant segue!
I love my steam deck and I also love valve's new update to steam family, but what I really like is how this is basically the new era of the steam machine. All of these other handhelds are most likely going to have steam on them so Valve is going to make their money, they were able to get way more people into this space and drive up competition. I remember loving GPD products but them being too expensive for me, but now there are options at many price points and with different features, and with the claw different hardware. (I know there have been intel handhelds before but intel can actually compete now and I hope they keep improving). I look forward to what competition will bring to the market and hopefully it will keep pushing prices down.
They should have waited for lunar lake. It needs to be more power efficient.
nice to see that more different hardware gets used, kind of a shame that so many use windows though. would be nice to see more with some sort of linux
Great machine and just needs a few more updates to be optimised but should eventually be a great investment
audio is not sync with a video on the first part of the video
Videos always on point ✨🌊💎🌊✨
the steam deck was my first amd device but honestly these past few years make me wanna run full speed in the direction of amd and never look back
it doesn't say its from an unknown source. @9:00 says intel corporation. this is UAC and was added in Vista in 2006. Which can be turned off if you dont like those pop ups.
"for starters, they run HOT!" well, we learned this from the Pentium 4's and saw nothing really change with the Core series so yeeeeeeaaaaaaah
Is it possible that the boosted performance is actually because the SSD is right behind the fan keeping it cool? Obviously an L for upgradability but could this be a justification for the design choice?
For me the Claw looks sexy, and it does the job because I only play light games occasionally, and it could be docked with that Thunderbolt 4 which is not bad as a versatile portable light gaming/office machine.
how the hell are you getting 60 frames on helldivers on steamdeck?
Ally can do max 30W plugged in, 25W is the max on battery.
And you can go higher with the manual TDP mode in the settings. (I believe up to 53W with FPPT, 43W with SPPT, 30W with SPL)
@@destruxandexploze2552 which there's absolutely nothing to be gained by going that high..... after 25-28 watts the Z1 extreme sees diminshing returns, way more heat to extremely little performance gain. its best to keep it between 25-30 even on the power adapter.
what's up with the knife? LOL
hi, i like your videos , you do good work , nice handhelds you have and i use nintendo switch and xbox. have some old games too🙂
Too many negatives when compared to what's available. Maybe they can make it an option after some updates / price cut
Intel ARC is made for modern graphics APIs (DirectX12 and Vulkan), given Proton is translating DirectX to Vulkan it could be great if it used Linux OS like Steam OS instead of Windows where it will use old DirectX for various games.
My ROG ally updated and its completely bricked, and when i try to factory reset it it doesnt stay on long enough for me to complete it. The joysticks stopped working 3 months after i bought it replaced it with Hall affect joysticks, the sd card reader never worked and it always overheated so i had to replace the back shell that allows more airflow and that kept the temps below 81c and Asus refuses to fix my rog ally because i opened it
I dont wanna pay hundreds of dollars to get it fixed I think ima just get a new one don't think I wanna get another asus tho
It's pretty impressive on the claw for the benchmark testing lol also the battery life I think Claw is the largest in the market so far
From my experience all joysticks get stuck like that if there's nothing limiting their range of motion. In this case and probably the others noted, the plastic circle around it is too big and let's the mechanism get to the point it binds up. Probably all of them are just cutting the allowable range of motion too close to their maximum.
Did bro shoot this in Cinescope??
It's the way the CPU/APUs Intel chips are built. They do stacks instead of grids; that's why they get insanely hot.
0:12 can we get a knife collection video???
Not seeing this 32GB RAM model anywhere online.
Agreed. I wish he’d show the system specifications so that we’d know if his device is a unique one provided to CZcamsrs or….he didn’t do the research
There isn't one.
@@dustindixon4257 there was a leak before it's release of it's benchmarks showing 32gb of ram, but they released it with only 16gb, so he must be going off that information which as someone with almost 1 mil subs i would figure would be a little better researched in the product he is reviewing..... but hey.
ASUS ROG Ally does 30 watts max TDP when plugged in. Just for clarification.
