- In this video Michael Evanko heads to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to chase wild brook trout on a tributary to the Rapidan River in Madison County. This was his first time fishing this public water. The water temperature at the time of filming was 48 degrees. Evanko hiked a half-mile up the tributary prior to beginning fishing. The fly rod used in this video is a hand made 7'-3wt fiberglass rod crafted by Nico Vreugdenhil, the owner of Yamame Fly Rods based in the Netherlands. The reel used is an Approach Genesis. The fish caught in this video were all released. This video was shot on Saturday, December 28, 2019 and was solo filmed.

Thanks for the video. I’ve backpacked large portions of Shenandoah National Park over the years and have occasionally fished its stream. A spectacular park. As you mentioned other people and their dogs and apparently off leash, are an extreme burden not to mention it’s illegal.

This is exactly like fishing for Goldens in CA. It looks so much like the stream I got 3 in last fall. I have mastered this. I am done with CA, 2 many people, bad DNR, moving to Charlotte and my other house there this summer. I was partnered with John Betts out of CO who recently passed. We made out own rods from oak or birch and that reel design was his originally, he was good friends with Ari Hart. If you have seen the Orvis beer glasses with the fish and rod, well that's my rod and reel you see, Karen the artist used my rod as inspiration......

Great content, as always! Taking my first trip to chase brookies in the Shenandoah in April. This video has got me super excited. Fly rod looks really nice. I just picked up two similar rods and reels from JP Ross co.
I know that stream....caught my first 2 brook trout ever there. Great fishing in SNP - the only reason I don't fish there more often is that it is 400 more miles away from home for me, so I end up in the Smokies most of the time. The brook trout are northern-strain there, so they get a bit bigger than the ones further south. Great looking rod too.

Hello Mike. I think I'll hold on to those two rods I I mentioned in my comment recently. 7' Fenwick and a 7'-6" Cortland both 5wts. I don't think I ever used the Cortland and the Fenwick I bought for my wife who on the first and last outing managed to imbed the fly into her left forearm. So into the closet they went. Almost 50 yrs. later and here I am contemplating putting them back in service. Anyway this is where I choose to fish for the last 30 years or so. Delaware River is the exception. Great video and the usual good commentary. I went down to Gattlinburg this spring but most of the streams were cranking. However I'm going back soon. I live in East Ky. now . Sure miss the Pa. streams.

Awesome video. I love SNP. I have never fished it though. Another place to check out that is very similar in my opinion is Pisgah National Forest. Being in NC it’s a bit of a haul but amazing wild trout populations.

Beautiful stream and fish. I was fishing a stream exactly like it today, right down to the large boulders and falls. Beautiful rod, however for those type streams nothing beats a Tenkara rod, give one a try with level line, don't bother using furled leaders, also no need for the indicator. Love the color of the reel. I had one and sold it, clicker was loud as heck and super stiff.

President Herbert Hoover also did fish with President IKE Eisenhower in his late years.....didnt like the trip with IKE at all! Also, Hoover loved the Rapidan could escape the oppressive heat of Washington DC!!! He grew up in Iowa caught my largest wild brookie in Iowa !! 14 and 3-4 inches

BrookieBum I’m not an expert on VA, but it seems that a majority of the streams in Shenandoah National Park have good populations of wild brook trout.

Mike, if you want a longer leader on a 7' foot rod just wrap the leader around the reel seat foot and back towards the tip. If the hook keeper can't be used, use a guide to rest the hook. That way a longer leader can be used and the fly line is kept out of the guides. I mostly use a 7' bamboo rods and a 9' leader. And have you ever used a furled leader?
You know what, I do that with my glass rods that are longer than 7' because I feel they can move that much line but I have issues moving that much line on the 6' glass rods. Perhaps bamboo handles differently? I'm curious about the furled leaders. I tried those once but had issues with the line not floating well with dry flies. Do you use furled leaders for dry flys?

Is going well. You certainly need to get up to Erie, although once you go and catch one, you’ll want to keep going back. We will have to see about January, I have a busy schedule in the new year. Worse case, definitely in the spring months.
Wooly Bugged thanks Mike!!! Schools going great, but it’s been hard keeping up with the workload! Editing and making videos on top of doing good in school was absolutely torture 😂😂😂 but got the job done, and surprised myself by making the deans list! Do you really need to time it with the rain, or are the fish always in the tribs up there? The new rod looks and fishes great! I’m glad to see you back out there. I’ve been out twice with no real luck for stock brown and bow holdovers. I don’t think there’s many left. I do have a new custom Brookie bamboo that I’m dying to break in. I’m hoping to go catch some Natives or wild bows on it soon. Happy new year.

Welcome back. Glad you had a chance to "recharge". Wonderful video to get back after it. I definitely want to get down there and give the area a shot. Question for you. If I were interested in a camera, for around $500 bucks or less, what would you suggest. Any other equipment you would say are "must haves". I am just looking to step the quality of film up, and just got Premier Pro for editing. Curious about your feedback, some people said I should ask you. Thanks Mike! Also, are you doing the Healing Waters Event this year for Kettle Creek? I spoke with Doug about it,, and got in contact with the director. Tight Lining MD hey Mike, thanks for saying hi. Ya, you should certainly get down to VA if you get a weekend and check out some of the water down there. As far as cameras go, I’ve met several folks that speak highly of the Sony RX100 as it is reasonably priced and shoots 1080 at 60FPS. It can also accept an external mic. Camera quality is number one and then ways to use it, for example various types of tripods can be useful. I think you’re set for editing software. You get fancier than that you might as well be shooting fishing documentaries and the cost benefit is harder to make on paper. I still like the GoPro for some action shots. Yep, I’ll be up at the Kettle Creek Healing Waters event this spring so we can chat all you want then. Caleb from Allegheny Natives knows a lot about higher end camera equipment if you are interested in making the investment. Hope that helps.

Mike I love your videos! Especially the brookie ones....question has coal mining - acid rain - declined? Making natural reproduction that much better? One other thing - just you and the gurgling stream.....Im thankful for your modesty...Your casting is a joy to behold!!!
I don't know what it is but I have fished natives in Virginia for a long time and the fishing has gotten better and better. With the biggest improvement in the last 5 years as far as I am concerned. I used to hike a ways into creeks for the better fishing, now I know creeks with good fishing straight out of the car. More catch and release has to play into that. The fish seem to be trending bigger.
My home waters. I grew up in Va and fished that area around Camp Hoover. Living in Princeton, NJ now. Trying to figure out local waters. Advice?

Why do you recommend releasing all wild brook trout, are they endangered in the wild?
Do the trout in these small streams and little pools stay small or are they just in there as they age and then move on to larger waters somewhere?
R Blatt a majority of the time brook trout do stay small when they live in small headwater streams, and even in slightly larger rivers. A trophy sized wild brook trout on the east coast would be anything over 10”. Their size is dependent on their environment, for example what food sources are available to them. Most brook trout only have a life span of up to 5 years. There are always exceptions and you often hear stories of the occasional 15” wild brook trout. In the north, in places like remote Canadian lakes and ponds, wild brook trout have plenty of deep cold water, food, and no pressure. Those fish grow much larger than the brook trout in small east coast streams.

I have seen videos of very large brook trout being caught in those northern Canadian deep waters and it's truly a testament to nature on how a species can change to its environment. Super neat!
