What about allowing your lettuce to flower to collect the seeds??
Bat Guano, good idea! I'll use a big heap of worm castings from the UWB too!
1 sheet of paper towel wet and rung out is the right humidity for fridge storage of lettuce.
I was about to say, some of those packs in the video were not Botanical Interests 😮… Oh well it filmed a while back - and sew what you’ve got. Then replace it with B.I..
Grow some cannabis lol
I'm from Phoenix AZ. Last year I grew two different kinds of lettuce (Romaine and May Queen) in my raised bed and I let one plant of each kind go to seed. This winter I got lots of volunteers growing in my garden space and in my backyard. Plentiful lettuce with very little effort 👌
Perfect!
Awesome. Self seeding gardens are the best! "Let us" all go a little wild. Cheers
Glendale, AZ over here!
I am from Zimbabwe. I grew red lettuce with only 3 plants. Now I have 120 plants at my home
Where at in Glendale? My Grandma used to live in Villa De Paz right next to the 101 on the other side of the cardinal stadium. Good memories of Phoenix/Glendale!@@taylorkuban953
You missed a ginormous opportunity to call this video "lettuce grow some lettuce"
Lettuce Grow: from seed to harvest😂 I was thinking the same thing!
I don’t think anyone should be shamed for liking iceberg lettuce. I love all greens, but that girl has its time and place, even for folks who also like leaves with greenie flavor. Bland sweet crunch has its place! Cheers from a kale and arugula lover.
Yesterday I googled how to grow lettuce epic gardening and now it has come
We're here
YAAAAASSSSSS!
This has happened to me before as well! Lol (I think it was ginger?) 😅
I planted lettuce seeds last week because buying lettuce goes to waste when I’m the only one eating it. Now I can harvest as needed without wasting a whole head! (Coincidentally, of the five types I planted, you listed three! I also love red leaf for color)
Buying beetroot doesn't go to waste, but planting through seeds then the harvested ones go to waste, carrots too..
>
So do I.
I bought a packet of red leaf lettuce seeds circa 2007 and have been growing them ever since.
This year I experimented with constructing a tarp to protect the lettuce from sun during the summer to reduce bolting, and also growing seedlings in a tray and planting them repeatedly to extend my lettuce season.
Both seem to be good.
I grow indoor romaine for that exact reason….you can take 12 leaves or so for a single side salad, no waste and they grow back.
Thank you Kevin for making informative videos delivered in a simple way. Im from Britain and my children wanted to know how things grow. So for 2 years ive watched your videos and then I teach them. You have inspired a whole generation of my family to get growing for which I am eternally grateful. My kids now spend their summer growing produce rather than playing video games. You will never know my kids, or their friends who see their enthusiasm for growing and then start asking their parents if they can grow food too, but please be humbled knowing the difference you are making to people's lives and the snowball effect it has. Be proud of what you have accomplished my friend, not only in business success but also bringing good to the world.
Means the world to hear this Andy. Best to you and the family...say hi from me!
This is the best video I could have found on growing lettuce and it appeared at the perfect time for me. Having never grown lettuce before, it gave me confidence that I'll be ok. 😅
We started lettuce ONE TIME and now we have re-seeding year after year here in my container gardening totes and buckets, what fun and so easy to grow.
Same here. Such a delightful invasive plant.
You're do lucky, mine just dies...🤔 One thing I can't grow, so sad
@@caddycraft6823mine reseeds all over my front yard. I’ve even got on growing on random spots on the driveway cracks and the garage door. It’s crazy. I’m not eating them from driveway but I let them grow since they tried so hard.
A wealth of knowledge packed into an entertaining video. Love it!
How is this comment a day old, when the video was just published??!
Great video
@@gardenwitheden time travel
I’ve had excellent success with Paris Island Romaine. It grows well in the heat and I’ve had no disease issues. It also has a high germination rate.
Perfect timing! I want to try gardening for the first time this year and definitely want to have some lettuce. You’re channel has been a huge help.
@Mailars Yes! his channel has helped me a lot over the past years of gardening; he's even inspired me to start my own gardening channel! 🌱🌱🌿🌿
That's what we're here for!
I recamend seilf sufficient me
Tip lettuce hates heat, for success grow it in cooler temperatures. With being a 1st time gardener it's one of those crops not great to start with unless temperatures right. Kevin did cover that a bit but don't get frustrated because temperature key for lettuce. BTW welcome to the garden club we are happy to have you join us. 😀 it's always learning club
@@epicgardening You've done a darn good job at it. What you've grown in your garden and on your channel is something to be very proud of.
Absolutely the best Lettuce from seed to salad video 5 Star!
Even though I’m Australian, your channel is still one of my favorites. There's so much information in your videos; I just have to consider the different season.
good onya mate.
Appreciate hearing that - loved my time in Oz!
I’m in australia too and it sure is hot here in S.E Qld! I just watched this video and then headed down to the nursery to buy lettuce seeds
@@theorganised_farmgal Yeah mate, I’m from north-east NSW, and it’s bloody hot here too. I’m actually not too far from the New South Wales Queensland border, so we’re probably in a similar climate, but same, this video made me get some more all-season lettuce seeds in the ground that I’d been meaning to for awhile. Good onya mate.
I'm in Central Queensland, right on the tropic line. Lettuce ,grows, bolts to seed or doesn't sprout at all some years. I have used seed stock up to 6 year old to revive my Winter lettuce plantings.
@@geradkavanagh8240 I’m going to try it in the acquaponics because it’s been like 38 degrees for a while lol
Appreciate. Lettuce has always given me trouble, if it's not too hot, it's too cold
Make sure the leaves are dry in the fridge so it stores longer! He did brief on this. Wet lettuce will wilt and go slimy very fast if it’s not dry!
This! I always pack a folded paper towel in with leftover lettuce, to absorb extra moisture and keep it from beading onto the leaves.
I wanted to come back to this because of your storage tip of the paper towel. I want to say THANK YOU! 🙏 My lettuce lasts 3 or 4 times longer, and I always think of this video when putting lettuce in my fridge. 😂
I do alot of "cut and come again" in a successive row/section and just scatter seeds. Successive about a week apart for 4 sections and harvest one section each week, by the time I cut the last section the first has grown back. Perfect rotation
Great info! I love growing lettuce all year round! It tastes really good when straight out of your garden!
Nothing better!
Lettuce is my rabbit’s favorite food so I try to grow him some every year. Arlo says thank you.
planted lettuce in a large growbag early last Novemberl and all this southern california rain we've had has made them grow like crazy. I love telling the boys to grab some lettuce for their sandwiches...or for their In n Out burgers.
Thank you, I am better informed about how to grow lettuces after watching your video: in simple terms, informative, and hands-on 😊
Such an educational video! Loved that you showed us every step, from planting to food prep. Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I got a bunch of little baby lettuces popping up. I'm so excited.
I love a good fresh fresh salad from the yard
I got Perris Romaine, Red Sail , Black Seeded, Red Butterhead and arugula to add that nice spice flavor
Me too! I love to direct sow them, and the eat them as baby lettuce, it tastes so good!
@@gardenwitheden right now they're about 2 inches big or so. They're doing great.
@@ipeefreely2364 That's great, I love gardening and growing my own fresh, organic, and have even made my own gardening channel! 🌱🌱🌿🌿
Butterhead Lettuce Is my favorite. If the seed is harvested from the lettuce. It grows amazing in that same location. It's very hardy if you sow the seed that's been harvest in that same location.
FINALLY! A proper tutorial on how to harvest my lettuce! Thank you
I'm so excited for these types of grow guides! This type of video where you take us step by step through every stage of a type of plant in one video is wonderful! They will be such amazing references for the future😍 I know they take so long for not much profit, but know that this is really helpful❤️. Thank you thank you Kevin!🥰
What a coincidence, I was starting to feel worried about my lettuce seeds not germinating and just yesterday one out of the 15 i sowed germinated, hopefully more will...
So.... how did your lettuce crop turn out?
Did they?
Botanical Interests has always been a favorite seed company that I order from every year! Love the artwork on the packets, the way the seed packets are packaged and delivered, and the successful germination. 👍🏼
I love growing lettuce if all varieties. I wash, dry in salad spinner and store in ¹/2 gallon mason jars or a ziploc bag. It will last me up to 3 weeks.
I feel like your channel and videos help do many people, both new and experienced gardeners, they're entertaining, you talk about everything. Thank you for your work!
😍
Loved the idea of interplanting the potatoes with the lettuce! Brilliant.
These growing guides are very entertaining and informative. Great format.
This is exactly the kind of content I come here for! Keep it up, please!!
Just started harvesting my first leaves. Thank you
Love making plant guilds. Waiting for slower growing veg to grow and mature leaves me a lot of space to seed or plant in fast greens and small roots such as radish and green onions. At this point in my 58 years of gardening I utilize every inch of space by putting seeds in everywhere and anywhere it makes sense, naturally paying attention to variety, eventual space needs, time required. Maximizing my best garden soils means less work developing other areas.
Also I never turn the soil. I use a potato fork and just give the soil a slight lift or boost to loosen it. No more heavy work for me unless absolutely necessary (don't like to disturb the soil microbiology).
LOL! I love how you always pop out of the garden somewhere! Makes me smile.
Please do more videos like this for other plants! Very informative
My goodness! Was I the only one who saw the absolute beautiful drainage of this garden bed at 9:59?! 😍👏🏾
I couldn’t see it.
Wow loved the progress updates and very detailed explanation ❤
Mesclun mix or "salad bowl" is my overall favorite 😍 one packet and tons of variety!!!
Hard to beat!
@Epic Gardening as a super small tiny rental gardener...it's got alot of bang for the buck ❤️
Yes, @jujube2407. It's definitely a favorite of mine. Greenstalks are amazing to harvest from especially lettuce. I succession plant to ensure during spring I have harvest for weeks
Learned so much from your channel, thanks man!!
I swear I live in your channel in the months leading up to planting lol
The colors in your videos are so soothing, saturated and vibrant, so beautiful- really makes processing all the good information so much easier, visually rewarding and Very rememberable. You’re a true genius!
It's a team effort!
I've been growing black seeded simpson for years and never knew it's name until now! I don't remember where I got the original seeds, and I don't think the package ever said the variety name. (I harvest whatever seeds I can every year, so I frequently let my lettuce bolt after a while.) Woo! Pumped to finally know the name! And it's a delicious lettuce. I love it!
Love the history lesson! Keep them coming!
This is hands down the best kind of guide for any plant.
Love how you go over the history and the different varieties. Thanks for all your great content!
Thanks. I'll be starting lettuce seeds soon.
They are very beautiful. I'm so jealous.
Great video!! Thank you from Kentucky 🙌🏻🦋🙌🏻
This video is very encouraging! I’m going to try growing lettuce soon. Thanx 😊
Love seeing Baker Hill and Botanical Interest (and SD seed co) represented
I love Botanical Interest. All that info alongside the inner walls of the packets, and uncommon things to grow!
I was going to skip lettuce in my new garden because I found it intimidating but you've inspired me. Wish me luck!
Love this type of video. Everything you need to know from start to finish❤️ Thank you!
I am a new gardener and your video with step by step help so much thank you!
I just sowed some lettuce seeds…. This came right on time. Thanks Kev.
Botanical Interest! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ so glad you bought that company. They are already wonderful. You will do even more.
Just in time! I was looking for a lettuce video. Thanks epic gardening, I always enjoy the history that comes with your videos!
Love the potato, lettuce idea
🥰 youre reading my mind… Lettuce is something i’m obsessed with this year! 💜💜
Easiest way I've sewn lettuce is the way Charles Dowding does it. Doesn't try to pick apart those tiny seeds, just uses an open tray then after they all come up, just separates them from the clump and puts them in the starter trays individually. I'm really not good at thinning and this is working well this year.
Oh yes! Do a lettuce history video!!!
I loved the comment about “respecting the plant”
Fabulous tutorial! I’m a beginner and this is exactly what I need to gain my confidence 😊
Good luck! Just go for it and even if some things don't turn out, others will! And you learn😁
These videos always come at the perfect time. I'll be starting lettuce to grow here in Northern Maryland soon, even with it begin a little colder, I have plastic domes to keep them warmer!
Very interesting facts about the crop, great videos as always.
Growing lettuce is my favorite!!! Durning the fall/winter there are fewer bugs to deal with💚🥬
Wow! You know your stuff. Thanks for the video.
Oh my god this is the best video. Thank you thank you thank you!
Fabulous 👍 so glad l found your channel. As a newbie your explanation/demon starvation is ace
Appreciate your true, full growing guides.
Thank you for all those tips
I’ve been growing Paris island for a few years, even when bolted flavors still pretty good and not very bitter.
Extremely comprehensive, thank you!
Such a great video and so informative. Would love to see more of these with different things to grow.
I am a CHRONIC over seeder with lettuce and Asian Greens. I am grateful for this tip so I can do better.
I enjoy this content. Living in Florida, I do a lot of adapting of gardening content to make it apply to my area. You make this easy with detailed information that I can use. My lettuce season will be over in another month, but I might try the romaine type in a bed that gets a lot of afternoon shade to see how long it will last because of the heat tolerant tidbit. I know it will not make it through the summer, but maybe May or June would be very nice. Thank you for the content and please keep it coming.
Yum!! Just planted red leaf, buttercrunch and others. Thanks for the info!
Love the old school EG videos!!!
Same!! I love your channel, I just subscribed!
BTW I also have a small gardening channel 🌽🍅🥦🌶🌱
Greetings, last year I planted romaine lettuce for the first time, they did really well. I harvested with method 3, got stuck with a lot of lettuce at the same time. This year I'm going to use method 1. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
Love the seed to harvest format!
Great video, loved it. Fab to see start to finish. Thank you 🤗🤗
this video came at a perfect time!! I just bought some lettuce seeds yesterday :)
Well-timed video since I planted some mixed lettuce seeds in trays two days ago and had no idea when to transplant them. Thanks!
Thanks, I learnt a lot from this video☺️
Many thanks for the tips! Much appreciated. 🌱🌱🌱
You're reading my mind! I usually direct seed loose leaf lettuce, but this year doing heading lettuce and starting indoors. Our summer last year came earlier, almost a 100F in mid May! Lots of bolting!!
Oof!
Thi summer I constructed a tarp over my lettuce to reduce sun exposure.
Also planted lettuce seedling several times to extend the lettuce season. So some may bolt, but others are still growing.
Next year I'm thinking of planting lettuce in a mostly shaded spot and see how that works. The lettuce would get some sun in just the morning or just the afternoon and be cooler pretty much all the time.
A few plants in containers that can be moved to shade might also be a good experiment.
YAY!! I've been waiting for this and just sowed a 24-cell tray this morning.
Best of luck!
Hey Kev! Can you do a video (if you haven't already) on how you look after your garden tools so they remain sharp and do not communicate diseases from one plant to the other. How often should we be doing this for a healthy garden? Cheers!
Kevinnnnn, more seed to harvest videos please... Tomatoes, Peppers, Carrots, Cucumbers and Herbs :(
In SE Missouri and my last frost is mid April. I’ve started 3 types of lettuces, some Asian greens, and my alliums to experiment with different covers like milk jugs and clear plastic storage tubs as mini greenhouses. Plus I found small thin pots that will fit between my windows. I was thinking the greens and lettuces would do good there even if it’s cold.
Would love an update in a few weeks. I'm also in Missouri and debating when to start.
@@aw6707 I figured I’ve got more than enough seeds, might as well try. Especially with stuff that can take a freeze. I’m going to start some brassicas next like purple sprouting broccoli and broccoli rabe, cabbages, spinach, and another round of herbs since practically nothing came up. I started the others December 31, and they’re doing great. I’ve got a shop light for a grow light and I have a night and day shift that I switch out the trays.
Yep the milk jugs work well!
San Diego here. Great video and soooo happy I can grow my lettuce seeds still! Fingers crossed!
I did black seeded Simpson and Tom Thumb last year. They were both great but my rabbit and I really loved the cute little Tom Thumb leaves!
Best technique like Charles says, cut the lower leaves,i have a lettuces for all fall season!Epic video as always Kevin 💪👍
Love butterhead lettuce
have you thought about food preservation? dehydrating and/or freeze drying?? Love you and Jacque!!!!!!
Wow... those are some beautiful lettuce plants! Thanks for the great info!
I thought I saw a notification that I won something from you, but it disappeared so quickly and now and I can't find it. :( I just sent an email to you. Thanks!
Depending on the moment of the year we don't sow the same varieties, for some reason the red ruby is very cold hardy (I feel the rougher texture helps to not get crushed by snow), so livin in Québec its got a lot of love from us. And as summer hits we switch for softer romaine varieties 😊
@Epic Gardening You got to get a salad spinner for all that lettuce!
