  • An easy way how to grow romaine lettuce in containers or grow bags. All the way from sowing seeds to harvesting decent size lettuce heads.

      There are several varieties of romaine lettuce, some of them grows smaller and take less time to mature, some of them grow bigger with more time required to fully develop head.

    Enjoyed the video a lot of good information.But I didn't see anything in your comments or information to kind of step-by-step of what you used on top of the soil.I'd like a little bit more cause.I'm getting ready to plant some lettuce now.And i'm a new gardener

    Does the spruce shavings keep slugs away?
    Do you pull out the rooted part after harvest OR will the Romaine re-grow another head?

      Hello. Well I would say it discourages slugs to move on them. As they need moisture to move and the shavings dry out pretty fast on the top. They don’t like dry and rough surfaces.
      Yes I pulled it out. It will grow some side shoots if You let big enough stem in the soil, but it won’t form another head like the first one.

      Hello. Head lettuce varieties are grown for one harvest (mostly). If big enough part of the stem is left in the soil, it will grow some side shoots but it won’t grow another head like the first one.

    My first year growing lettuce. Im unsure when to harvest. Thanks for this video. What did you do with the extra leaves you pulled off? Can those be eaten too?

      Hello. What variety are You growing? If it's romaine lettuce, the harvest time is when the tip of the head is firm.
      I sorted those leaves (the bottom ones are of lower quality). Yes they are absolutely edible.

      Hello. Well can be very tricky to say generally, so I'd rather recomment You to check the soil. But lettuce has quite shallow root system, so it is better to water it more frequently (every other day, maybe even daily in the stage of head forming)

      Hello. The best way is to check the soil. Stick Your finger 4-5cm (2") into the soil and You can tell whether it is still moist or needs watering.

      Well, the wood shavings are not a must, but they help the soil to retain moisture and also stable temperature.

      The soil was mostly compost (with some garden lime, wood ash or/and coffee grounds).
      I am trying to water the soil, but the rain doesn't care about that🙂

    My romaine always bolts and doesn’t make a head. How do you prevent this? Partial sun?

      It's most likely too hot for it. If it's over 25°C (77°F) it is very likely to bolt. Or not enough watering can also be the reason.

      Hello. If You don't harvest the heads, the plants will go to flower period. They will send flower stalks and if pollinated, those will produce seeds.

    How many days from germination before transplanting? How long does it take to be bitter? My romaine lettuce is already 2 months old and only has a few leaves with the biggest leaves only about 3 inches long. I'm afraid they will be bitter before the harvest time. 😂

      Hello. It depends on the growing conditions. The seedlings grow very slowly in cold weather. When they have 4-5 true leaves is about the right time to transplant them. What is the variety You are growing?
      They have bitter taste when grown in hot temperatures. Or when they bolt (which often happens in hot temperatures).

      Hello. No, if the soil is rich in organic matter, lettuce doesn’t need any fertilizing. Actually it can cause head rot during head formation.

      Hello. After transplant roughly twice a week. Once they started to form heads it increased up to every other day (or even daily on clear sky days) few weeks before harvest.

      They can be grown in full sun in cool weather, but when the temperatures rise they will appreciate some afternoon shade.

      Romaine type lettuces are mainly grown for the heart of the plant. It won’t form if You keep cutting it

      No. All this work so You can see the process of it growing all the way from seed to harvest in a few minutes video (in the case You are interested).
      You can grow it on whatever scale You want, I grew dozens more in garden 🙂

      What an obtuse comment. Do you not realize that it produces multiple heads of romaine? Also, it’s about self sufficiency and knowing how to garden.
