  • The NHL Draft Combine is an opportunity for teams as well as the media to see and speak to the future stars of the NHL before they are drafted. In this edition of "Hey Burkie", Brian Burke tells Jeff Marek how he conducts prospect interviews, his favourite draft interview and which player almost fought one of his scouts.

    I like how I've heard both of these stories before from other interviews Burkie has done, and yet this was still entertaining and new. Your animators have a really fun style.

      If you say so. Personally I can only hear about poodle vs doberman, Timex vs Rolex, and Nail Yakupov before I'm so bored I'm ready to try and ruin Peter Zezel's life.

    I interviewed Brad May when he was in junior and I was in J-school.
    Very thoughtful answers. Kind person. So obvious how much his teammates loved and respected him.

    I really really wish this was longer, there's nothing on here that people who listen to a lot of Burkie's interviews don't already know. I'm sure he has tons of other draft stories.

    Interestingly, it was shortly after Pat Quinn was fired from the Canucks that they traded for Brad May in Feb. 1998 (acting GM Mike Keenan dealt Geoff Sanderson to get May). Burke ended up trading May to Phoenix and later traded to reacquire May.

    The key to Burke's storytelling...
    Is to tell the same few stories over and over again... Til they're polished gems!
    It's better to have one or two killer antidotes that brings down the house on every occasion, then dozens of half-baked yawners... People will keep begging to tell that great story to everyone they bring, time and again; as oppose to people having couple words conversations with you and ducking out before you start another one of your long winded drolls...

    Speaking from here in Buffalo we called him Brad May-not. Constant under-achiever with Hall-of-Fame line mates and his only claim to fame is a couple of decent moves after a Herculean effort pass from Pat LaFontaine on his back and of course RJ's May-Day Call. Happy to have seen him go to Vancouver and 5 other teams.

    If you know about Burkie, then you already know everything here, word for word. He's told this story many times - Spittin Chiclets, TSN ... I knew Yakupov would be the worst interview but I was expecting Landeskog to be one of his better ones - so much so that they asked Landeskog to stay and help them interview all the other prospects. Still entertaining though. More Burkie please.

      @@thylacine519 it’s easy to put someone on your “do not draft” list when you know you can’t pick him

    • @IanSane
      @IanSane Před rokem +3

      If you're getting serious red flags on a guy who was expected to get picked early, you could probably get a good trade for your pick if he fell to you. Obviously if the guy is projected that way then you can assume your negative assessment of him is not a common opinion so some other team will probably bite. But then you're going significantly against the grain so how smart are you really? Everyone is wrong on this guy except you? That's a big risk. You'll likely get a good haul for the trade but if that player turns out to be a star you're never going to hear the end of it unless you land a comparable star on whatever later round picks you got in the trade. In this specific example Yakupov was projected as possibly the first pick so if he somehow fell to number 5 I don't think anyone would criticize you for jumping on it even if it didn't work out. If you go with the really obvious pick then the criticism ends up more on the player for not living up to expectations than the organization for screwing up the pick.

      Not if Reilly had still been available.

    • @WarriorStrengthFitness
      @WarriorStrengthFitness Před rokem +8

      Burke has been honest about this since day 1. People who worked with him at the time have confirmed it. They had Morgan Reilly as their number 1 pick in that draft. If Yakupov fell to 5 that year, they would have traded the pick or drafted someone else. Turns out it was a very weak draft and that his assessment of the top 10 was quite good!
