    Hi, mathematician here.
    Yes, the logarithmic vs exponential discussion gave me an aneurysm.
    Yes, the Richter scale is logarithmic, which means that it depends *logarithmically* on the earthquake strength.
    Which means, that the earthquake strength depends *exponentially* on the Richter number (because yes, the exponent and logarithm are inverse functions of each other).
    Which means, that yes, there is a huge difference between 7 and 8.

    • @navi6293

      Sorry im stupid, who is right then? Garnt or Connor?

    • @Eltaurus
      @Eltaurus Před 2 lety +715

      @@navi6293 well, they all said a lot of things. So it depends on which one you consider
      - Garnt was right calling the scale logarithmic, and Connor was wrong saying that Garnt was describing exponential
      - Connor correctly described the logarithmic and exponential functions. He was also right in saying that logarithm is an inverse of exponential, while Garnt and Joey were doubting that (Joey even said that logarithmic is exponential, which is wrong).
      - Connor was wrong in saying that the logarithmic scale implies that there isn't much difference between 8 and 9, while Joey was right to say that there is.
      Joey was also right saying that the higher the number the bigger the difference, and Garnt was right noting that on the Richter scale each next number means the 10 times increase (of the earthquake amplitude).
      - Connor also said that the logarithmic scale depends on the function you put into it, which just doesn't make any sense at all
      The main point, which nobody of them understood and which made this whole argument possible, is that the same relation can be represented by either logarithmic or exponential plot - it simply depends on the choice of axes. (aren't these guys supposed to have engineering degrees?)
      Ultimately though, Garnt appears to be right about saying that few people can intuitively understand the Richter scale.

    The "Logarithmic Scale" means that the /scale/ is logarithmic, IE each step on the y axis is log(x), so an exponential function drawn on a logarithmic scale looks like a straight line - such as the richter scale. So increasing the y by a number means that the x has actually increased exponentially - the inverse of what the scale is.

    Boys, here's a simple explanation of why you guys struggle with logarithmics!
    How logarithmic scales work:
    Remember when Connor said he went to a place that had a pH of 2 and Garnt was confused that Connor didn't melt ? It's the same principle with the Richter scale, both of those scales are logarithmic. A pH of 2 is vinegar and you can deal with it but a pH of 1 will leave chemical burns on your skin after a short exposition. In the same way, an earthquake of magnitude 8 is a problem, an earthquake of magnitude 9 is very dangerous. Those two scales work in base 10 which means every increment is 10 times the previous increment. As such, a pH of 1 is 10 times more acidic than a pH of 2 and a magnitude 9 earthquake is 10 times bigger than a magnitude 8 earthquake.
    Why the scales are logarithmic rather than exponential:
    Acidity and earthquakes scale linearly (+1, +1, +1...) but they do so across a very large amount of values. For example, a weak level could be 10 but a strong level could be 100 000 000. Since the range of values is so big, it's as if this linear scale was actually exponential. You can see in the example I gave that the biggest value, 100 000 000, is so big that it can be expressed as an exponential version of the smallest value, 10. As such, 10 to 100 000 000 is basically 10^1 to 10^6 which is why Joey and Garnt see earthquakes as exponential. However, as Connor said, exponentials and logarithmics are inverse which means you can use one to cancel the other. For example, half (1/2) and double (2/1) are inverse which means if you halve something then double it or double something and halve it, it cancels out. Exponential transformations tone up a scale (they increase growth) and logarithm transformations tone down a scale (they decrease growth). Since the linear growth of acidity and earthquake are so big that they behave like an exponential curve, we apply a logarithmic transformation to cancel the exponential feeling and to tone them down into... The pH or Richter scales! As such, the scales are logarithmic version of a linear scale that behaves like an exponential scale.
    The reason why Garnt and Joey didn't understand why it's not exponential is that the Richter scale takes the linear scale of earthquake intensity and tones it down into a logarithmic scale but Garnt and Joey start with the logarithmic Richter scale and tone it up to the linear scale of earthquake intensity. In short, they go the other way around by applying an exponential transformation to a logarithmic scale.

    • @Sonobody123
      @Sonobody123 Před 2 lety +72

      In laymen's term, as you move up the Richter scale, the strength of the earthquake is increased exponentially. That's because the scale is a result of putting the energy of earthquakes through a logarithmic function. To work out the "strength" of earthquakes, you simply reverse the process by applying the exponential function to those numbers.

    • @dzello
      @dzello Před 2 lety +46

      @@Sonobody123 A more visual version would be:
      1. Exponential functions e^x (cells dividing) - grows faster and faster
      2. Linear functions x (how strong an earthquake is, how acid a substance is) - grows normally
      3. Logarithmic functions log x (Richter scale, pH scale) - grows slower and slower
      If you want to go upward between those 3, you apply an exponential transformation, and if you want to go downward between those 3, you apply a logarithmic transformation.
      If you want to go down from an exponential function (1: e^x) to a linear function (2: x), you log your exponential function and the result will be a linear function: log of e^x is x.
      If you want to go down again from linear to logarithmic, you log your result: log of x is log x.

    For anyone interested in Connor's story about the 'glowing stuff' that killed a family, its called the Goiânia accident, and it happened when a hospital shut down\moved sites but failed to remove all the hazardous wasn't from the old location. A guy came in to loot the place, took a few machine parts home and remove the Caesium component, cracked it open then sold it to a scrap yard. The yard owner then brought it home and let his kids\wife play with the cool glowing blue dust - of course his young daughter painted herself in it, and they all ended up coated in this highly radioactive dust, in some cases consuming it (don't eat radioactive material, kind of a bad idea). By the end of the even 4 people died, and some 249 were contaminated in some way (proximity to the source pre breakout, direct dust contact etc).

    On the logarithm earthquake thing: The difference in intensity between the numbers on the Richter scale grows exponentionally BECAUSE it is a logarithmic scale. That means you take intensity measurement and put it through a logarithmic function to "compress" the numbers on the higher end to make is more readable/understandable. To go Back form this logarithmic scale to the "raw" intensity you would have to use a exponential function since that is the inverse.

    The part were they talked about radiation accidents reminded me of the *"Cobalt 60 bomb"* on Mexico;
    Basically a medical center contraband a big ass cobalt medical machine (that I think it was for x-rays or something like that) the problem was that people on this Mexican hospital didn't knew how to use this machine so they locked it on the basement for years until the hospital said "let's sell this machine as scrap metal" not knowing COBALT IS FUCKING RADIOACTIVE.
    And what happened is that not only the truck were they traveled with the machine left radioactive metal pieces on the roads but also the scrap metals were used to craft a ton of metal beams, bars & furniture that was used for a TON of houses. And they actually found out the radiation problem because a truck with some of the metal went to an U.S. nuclear organization and the radiation alarms went off, so they notified the Mexican authorities to track and recollect all the metal.
    And how does the story end? After they search and recollected all the metal they could find, they dump it on a desert area far away from the cities, the problem is that that area was also close to another area were they recollect water, so then the water got poisoned with radiation, a ton of Mexican families either died or had a ton of health problems because of this. Yeah Latin-america having the worst governments as ever.

    I hate to have to comment about maths, but I think the confusion here comes from mixing up 'logarithmic scale', and 'logarithmic functions'.
    Plotting y = log(x) which is a logarithmic function, gives you a curve with diminishing returns like Connor said.
    But using a logarithmic scale, means the numbers on (usually) the y axis are the result of a log function, and so any straight curve on that chart will actually be exponential.
    I don't know if this makes any more sense, maths is hard and if you're reading this you're already a nerd so don't @ me.

    57:00 The problem with bottled water isn't just the water itself, but also the bottle. Normal PET bottles in presence of light and air can degrade, become brittle and even leak out oxidized plastifiers (also why PET is not recommended to get into contact with hot food and liquids). It isn't true to bottles made of PP (polypropylene), as it is EXTREMELY stable to any chemical reaction even in presence of UV light, and it doesn't need plastifiers to make it plyable, which isn't the case for PET. Of course PP is more expensive to produce compared to PET, which is why PET is the material of choice for most products that are expected to be consumed within a year.

    For island survival items the two no-brainer picks are:
    Fixed blade full tang knife, and container for water collection + boiling in. Something like a large, wide mouth stainless steel bottle.
    In my opinion the third pick should be a stainless steel cooking pot with a bail handle.
    If you don't know any fire starting techniques, a consistent fire starting item might be best. But on an island, you'd be surprised what can wash up on the beaches. Check out a channel called Field Days. He has found multiple usable lighters on a beach in one day.
    Other options might be a fishing net, which could double as a hammock, but that's something that also has a good chance of washing on shore.

    Advice from an Eagle Scout, when asked what 3 items to bring, look at the 3 tools that will support your 3 weakest traits. Never bring anything that will run out quickly.

      I would bring a stainless steel pot. Makes it easier to carry water and you can cook all your meals in it. There's not many bowl shaped items naturally and I don't have time to make a bowl when I'm dying of dehydration lol

    1:58:18 I've felt relatable moments on this podcast.
    Now I've felt, difference is lifestyle and growing up 🤣
    Building a shed, or a chicken coup or something... seems fairly common where I'm at.
    I've built stuff together with people, mostly demolished stuff tho
