As a South Indian, I'm very happy this game exists. 💜
I thank your part of the world for 90% of my spice rack
I liked the game and it’s story very much
As someone who is Tamil, started watching your videos back when I was in Tamil Nadu - India (YEARS ago!), and have since moved here to the pacific north west now, this video's got me feeling all kinds of emotions. Unexpected emotions. I just want to go into so many details about all the awesome references and details in this game. Not to mention the weird ennui and emotions of the immigrant experience this game captures. I don't really know what point I'm trying to make here, but I just want to register that it's very cool to watch some of my favorite creators play something that represents me quite well. I love the curiosity, interest, and excitement you all shared at the awesome Tamil food too. There's some great Tamil restaurants in Portland that I hope you guys go visit to try what these dishes taste like for yourself.
Hey if you wanna/feel comfortable to share your thoughts and insights I would be more than happy to read them.
@@hamdepaf6686 That's very sweet of you to ask! There's a lot of incredible details that the game captures, so I will limit it to a few for brevity.
1. The food really is incredibly accurate within the simplistic representation in the game. This is very close to how I would actually make idli's or puttu. Kudos to the team on that!
2. The way they capture the frugality of Pavalaan and Venba early on is touching. This is pretty reminiscent of a typical lower/middle class lifestyle back home (and presumably here too). Nothing gets thrown away until it's falling apart. Everything is repurposed endlessly. One thing that caught my eye was when Venba is sick, she seems to be wrapped in a sheet with an airplane logo - I am guessing this is the sheet that they give you when traveling internationally on a flight (which they did going from Chennai to Canada). My family had these sheets that we used for years after the first time one of us took a trip like this!
2.a. Fun side note - I absolutely ADORE yard and garage sales and thrift stores, and was incredibly fascinated by them when I first got here to the USA because it was such an alien concept to me . Getting rid of such perfectly good items for pennies on the dollar just did not compute in my head. I kept looking for the catch. Getting things repaired was not a concern here whereas repairing goods was a whole industry back home.
3. The little couplet that starts every new "episode" of the game is actually from an immensely popular literary work called "Thirukkural" written by Thiru Valluvar. It is a collection of 1330 couplets (2 lines) on teachings of virtue that is taught to most Tamils in school. It permeates a lot of our culture, and the way it is shown in the game is perhaps the most popular way in which people come in contact with it in their day-to-day life. They sell "date-sheet" calendars, where there is a stack of 365 tear-away sheets stuck on a cardboard plaque with pictures/paintings of deities or heroes. Every day you begin by tearing away the previous days sheet to reveal todays date, a new "kural" or couplet which is like a thought for the day, and some other details about the day etc.
What Tamil restaurants in Portland would you recommend?? I don’t usually go to Indian restaurants because I prefer my moms home cooked food, but I moved here not too long ago and would be down to try!
This game is very cute and has a great story. I’m glad there are more stories that represent Asians and their struggles, without being stereotypical, coming out more and more.
This game is very profound and emotional. I now understand the way my parents talk about their culture and values compared to American or Canadian culture. My dad immigrated to the USA when he was 17 or 19 years old to pursue better education and eventually became a retailer for jewelry and clothing. He was one of the first Indians in New York City at the time, having been born in 1947. I feel a connection to both American and Indian culture, and I am grateful to have experienced both
And what about your next generation?
@@omthakkar7801 What do you mean next generation?
I love how cute and educational this game is! In South East Asia there are desserts called Putu that also uses steamed rice flour and coconut 😮 I bet it was heavily influenced from South Indian trade and commerce with us back then. I would have never known of such close cultural connections. Such a cool world we live on!❤
Anyone else notice the mask's eyes move at 13:56, following Kavin as he ran into the room? With that and the eyes closed at end, I wonder what kind of significance it'll have in the story. I have to admit I'd be overwhelmed with all the choices Kavin gets offered-they do sound good though! This games looks wonderful, I hope I can play it sometime!
kavin reminds me of myself as a child 😭 i was so desperate to fit in the i forsook my language, food and name. now as an adult i regret it so much but I'm learning now!
also im so glad to see food i eat on the daily at home represented like this 🥹 I'm definitely gonna buy this game
Puttu is similar to Indonesian cake, Putu. It is traditionally cooked inside bamboos and instead of coconut, we use palm sugar between the rice. So after it is cooked, the palm sugar will melt. The shredded coconuts is used after cooking for coating. I think there is also a similar cake in the Philippines. 😊😊
There is and it's called Puto there. Puto is also a swear word that means "Male Prostitute" in Spanish
We call them puto here. They're delicious 🤤🤤🤤🤤
i’m tamil, we eat puttu with ghee and palm sugar!
As an Indian, I am thrilled that a game has been created based on Indian cuisine. I am learning a lot about my own culture, which is fantastic.
I'm probably feeling this a little too much, but as a child of Pakistani immigrants this hit wayyyy too close to home. This game has so many subtleties that make me feel less alone (just like Kavin going by Kevin, people called me Abs for short because my name was different!) I even recently wanted to connect more with my culture, and my mom has been teaching me her recipes! All in all, I'd love to see a full playthrough and hope to see more cool games like this. Love you guys for featuring this game!
As like one other commenters here, I'm also an Indonesian.
I live in Medan, a city in the northern Sumatra province, in Sumatra, an island to the west of Java. Here, there are a lot of cultures colliding, mostly Malay, but also a couple of Chinese and India (specifically Southern India). My city, in Indonesia, is known as one of the "food heaven" in Indonesia, with the abundance of cultural food from many. And besides my own Batak cuisine, India is my favorite international food.
As I said above, the Indian people living here are from Southern India, and the food they serve mostly adhere to their tastes, as us Malays and Bataks are known to love sharply spiced foods, much more than other tribes in Indonesia. So, the Indian restaurant is so much tasteful in Medan than any other cities in Indonesia (and much cheaper too, because even if they have some fine dining restaurants, they also open places like stalls, food truck-like places, and so much more). My school is close to many of these Indian restaurants, and I guess that's why I've got accustomed to their smell of spices as well as their foods. So much sharp tastes, and I LOVE IT!
Really nice to see those cultural foods in games. Even us in Sumatra, like Aceh, also got influenced by their spice choices.
Im from medan too, i thought im the only viewer from there lol
I also really like the diversity of food in medan. I always miss the food when im away
@@mauritslubis2291 Me too. It's never boring to choose what you want to eat back in Medan.
I played this game last night and it was so good!!! Even in such a short game it did an amazing job of conveying all the emotions the characters were feeling and by the end I was so attached to all the characters! I’m definitely going to try some of these recipes because they looked sooo good
Came for the food and stayed for the lovely way the game portrays the experience of immigrants in a new country and culture. Thanks for the video and for sharing the game with us!
I really want to see more of this! I loved watching you play the demo before and was so excited when I saw this
It’s a good thing you didn’t keep going - the game is only about an hour long! Amazing story and design - just wish there was more.
I'm in love with this game. Please play more!
I played the demo of this, during the week of Wholesome Direct! The demo was so short, but I had so much fun as it was so interesting! Congratulations on the devs for the release! 💓
As some from Tamil Nadu I'm more happy than I thought I would be to see people of other cultures enjoy ours
Even if the game is Short,I Want You All To Complete the Full Game Because As An Indian Im Proud to See A Whole Game Based on Indian Food and you guys playing it is so much better ❤️.....
I was waiting to watch this once I’d finished playing, and it is such a beautiful game. Gotta say, Ash nailed the idli pronunciation. This didn’t take me too long to finish (I breezed through the cooking since I’ve probably made a bunch of the dishes before), so I’d love to see y’all do a full playthrough
im so happy to see you guys check this game out i been following they tiktok and it's look really good! my grandma so proud when she learn about this game (she is indian)!
I loved this!!!! I and definitely buying this game and trying some of their recipes!
I'm not Indian but I'm Malaysian and I love Indian food so much. It's not Malaysia without Indians
Cheating on Ash's Monday Madness stream to watch this right now!
Same I just came from there
Me three
I'll admit; I was drawn in by the auto-generated captions reading "Hey everybody, welcome to some disaster".
The hardest part of making idlis is making the batter.
Watching this as a tamilan makes me very happy
as someone who is indian it was funny seeing you guys try to prounounce some words haha. You did a great job tho
omg this game is so cute and so bittersweet
Not much of an identity politics guy, but as a Pakistani, I’m really happy to see a game like this. Might have to pick this one up. Would also like to see the four of you play the Heavenly Bodies Cleanup dlc
I love your videos
As a north Indian I feel happy .
Please complete this game
Tamil is more pronounced Thumul , i had friends who went to Tamil classes after school and complained about it and I learned the pronunciation that way XD
its pronounced as Thaa mizh, "zh" here can be substituted with a "il" the actual pronounciation is relatively difficult for a non native speaker as the original Tamil Letters sound cannot be replicated as it falls somewhere between il-r-rzh.
For ease of pronunciation call it "Tha mi (r) l"
okay, i'm crying now :((
Aww man they said Kevin instead of Kavin ❤
I want to make a rocket!
its so cute
Aiyo, means something in the term of " Deary me or Dear God." It can be an expression of suprise, worry or amazement.
But I am paraphraising, I don't actually know.
It just what I gather from interacting with Tamilis.
But to every Tamili in the comments, please correct me if I am wrong.
And I wish you all a wonderful day.
Your Nanba from the other border.
You are correct bro
We use ayo for everything even if we are happy or sorrow or feeling bad for someone
Ayo is MSG of tamilans 😂 fuyioooooo!😂
Ok probably an accident but... umm your new backrooms video inst on the channel anymore?😢
I’m late
