Hockey: A People's History - Episode 1 A Simple Game: One winter's night in 1875 a young country develops a new passion that explodes across class and gender.
Yes as an american, hockey is and always will be The best sport there is! Played 16 years and getting back into again. But i must say american style of play in the game is very pussified. Canadian and russian style of hockey is the best. But thank you Canada for hockey 🙏🙌❤️
I'm not saying we don't have any talented players at all., because we do hAve a shit ton of talent. But I'm talking about the American mindset on how to play hockey compared to Canadian and russian mindset. And the reason why we beat Russia was cause Brooks adopted the Canadian/ russian school of hockey.
I've got fucking goose bumps and I'm an American. Can't skate, never played the game, but I love it more than the games I grew up with. The first time I saw hockey was a black and white picture in a book and I have been in love ever since. Don't know why, don't much care. It is truly the best game I can name.
+tomnicholl Hockey is amazing... and as a Canadian, yes I play a lot of it. But, have you ever played Lacrosse? or Rugby? And.... have you ever been on a dirtbike before, and been in a motocross race? yes motocross is much different, but very much addictive; especially when your racing, not watching.
As an American, I love two things. Baseball and hockey. Two stick sports that are shrouded in miles of mythology and filled with passion and competition that can not be matched anywhere on any sports field.
I think every rookie who gets drafted in the nhl should be required by every team to sit in the team lounge and watch this documentary. A hot meal while relaxed in a recliner watching this documentary should be mandatory.
Never played hockey before and cant skate worth crap. Growing up in Kansas City, Missouri I was big into football. We don't have an NHL team, but I really enjoyed and Im starting to get into hockey nowadays. This is awesome. Thanks
Windsor, Nova Scotia ❤️ where i grew up playing hockey! Every year we hosted the Birthplace of Hockey Tournament where we had MVP awards each game that were the original pucks made of wood
This was totally awesome!!! I love how they re-created the old equipment, the old rinks, and right down to the old clothes from the period. I've read about this stuff in books, but this was like hopping in a time machine and watching the very first hockey games! Very, very cool. :)
I'm English, born and raised here, but I love hockey, nothing beats it. All other sports are dwarfed by it. One day I'll move to Canada so my children will never have to suffer a football match.
+Kellan Aplin .... I'm sorry to say my dear. But I'm Canadian. and we still play soccer and football (American) here. Ice hockey, field hockey, and ball hockey is not the only sport we play here. we play multiple sports and we have a high amount of immigrants here; which in turn, brings more sports to our country to learn and play.
If your young and play hockey. Would you mind playing a shift for me? I never got to play the sport. But love it dearly. Play one for all of us who cant. Thanks
my dad, Ralph Bouncer Taylor, born in 1905 in Toronto, got his middle name as a comment about 'how he played defense' for the Toronto Canoe Club as a teenager
Just getting into hockey. Wasn't really a big deal growing up in D.C. (technically a southern city) but I think it's a pretty neat game. Thanks, Canada. Y'all are alright. :-)

this game is great, but in the end of the day people play a certain sport ,because its the only sport available in there local area. Its not very popular in ireland because we have mild winters, and our stick sport hurling and field hockey got established first
Despite everything about hockey I may have issue with, there is nothing in the world like being a kid and playing shinny or street hockey. I played soccer and baseball throughout my youth, I played basketball and football recreationally among other games. Those games are fun, but hockey is special.
Great video, would love to see something about it's international spread. I live in Oxford, home of the 2nd oldest hockey team, and oldest still standing ice hockey rivalry. It was huge here in the 20's and 30's. but eventually the money dried up with the war and recession and it's struggled since.
@@terenceallen9880 Care to point out where I said hockey started in the UK? (I'm making the assuption that's what you've somehow taken from my comment). The OxBridge Varsity is the oldest still standing rivalry in hockey, assuming it was still hockey in 1885, and not Bandy, as some have since claimed. Hockey is awesome, wish it was more accessible in the states… especially in the south. I would’ve loved to play growing up but it was super expensive. Basketball & football had to make due lol
Hockey was bandy improved. More intimate, faster and more viceral. The fact that is hard to get a rink the size of a football (soccer) pitch doomed bandy to very cold places like northern scandinavia and siberia. The smaller closed rink of hockey plus the hard checking made hockey a better spectator sport, and hockey gave the players more oportunities in the Olympics and profesional. Still I like bandy and its good that seem to be making a comeback, and its not just a footnote of sport history. Too bad it the documentary does not said that the game british soldiers were playing in Canada was most likely bandy. Many people that see a bandy game for the first time thinks its a hybrid of hockey and soccer, its the other way around...
As a limited-educated, amateur historic researcher, I have read from at least one book of the etymology of the name "Hockey", and it seems to have ties to the ancient Eastern Hemisphere as well. The ancient Western-Eygptian God/Goddess of "Fishers, Fowlers, and Fertility", often with the zoomorphic form of the "Frog" was extremely sacred to the pre-dynastic Egyptians, because it represented the hunter-gatherers who 'found the food' for their survival. In an ancient indigenous, First-Nation friendly competition among tribal hunters, on the ice, a Christian Minister observed that the sticks used were swung at not just stones sliding on the ice, but also were used to smack the opposition, which caused the injured opponents to cry "Heka", which in the translation would be "God", or "God-dammit". The sporting event mimicked the hunting skills needed to take down Geese or Game who were on a distant end of the ice or water. Two modern day place-names for Heka would plausibly be Heka-Seca, Hackensack, the conjoined etymologies of Heka and Sekhmet/Seka, the Scottish tribes. There also is Keta-Heka, Crown of Heka, Kitty Hawk. And of course, the MoHawk tribe could show etymology origins of the "Tribe of Heka", Mhu-Heka, from the Egyptian tribe and Heka, conjoined references. I am sure there are 1000 other valid origins. A comical note in the identical reference to "God", is the term "Yahoo", which in Southern areas, were the vocalizations of the indigenous women in their love-making throes, where the God was Yahweh, or Jah-wah, Yah, most plausibly relating to "Jah-guar", Jaguar, the traditional Panther-Lion-God of the New World. Heka, Hockey, and Yahoo, these names are formed in sacred antiquity.
from what i've read, it was the italians who invented hockey, from field hockey spreading to the northern countries (colder) and they playd with flat rocks on the ice
Europeans, particularly in the UK, had been playing Ice hockey type games long before 1875. It didn’t originate in Canada as much as Canadians will try to deny that
British soldiers? You mean Irishmen in the British army, who played hurley. You "puck out" in hurling, so when they flattened the ball they called it a "puck."
+Hockey Boss It's ultimate history goes back a lot farther. It is like what football is to the United States. It technically came from rugby, but it is said to have been invented in the United States. Hockey was developed from other sports, but like the US, will always be claimed by Canada, as invented by them. I'm not sure where the game was originally formed, but take 1 step into Canada and I think it will be safe to say it is definitely Canada's game now.
Football (english and gaelic), (not the northamerican travesty of Rugby) ,hurling, shinty, bandy and hockey are all related games.. They all came from games playes by the english, scots, welsh and irish for centuries.

The British have nothing to do with the game of hurling (not Hurley). It's an ancient Irish sport, whose origins lies in prehistoric times.
Ireland was british them.... yes, not with their consent....

Bandy was "invented" in the UK. Hockey is essentially just a knock off from it. However, as hockey was selected as an Olympic sport, it grew larger.

Im sure it was the british army who invented it, Canada just developed and comericalised it.
