On the rare occasions that I ride on an interstate, with crosswinds of 20 gusting to 30 mph, I duck and cover by drafting behind semi trucks. The difference is that I can pace them, the Grom can't. Just picked up the same 2022. I effing love it! I’ve been riding dirt bikes and atvs my whole life and I’ve never actually known the RPMs I was riding at. Now that I’ve got this and the tach on it I feel like I’m regularly at well over 5000 rpm cruising around town at +45mph… is that too high to be running continuously? I would never dream of running around town like that in my 06’ GTO but obviously they are massively different beasts. I’ve got a 31 tooth rear sprocket coming in the mail to bring up the top end speed a little as I feel like I’ve got all the acceleration I could possibly need for the roads I’ll be riding on. I also like going with the rear sprocket reduction over the front increase because it reduces the overall moment of inertia of the drive train and rotating mass. Probably not by much but I’m sure it’ll have a small effect.
    But yeah I’m trying to make my bike last and I don’t want to be over doing it with the RPMs. Just curious what the general consensus is about what a reasonable max cruising RPM is before prolonged wear is heavily increased. Thanks for the video!

    • @HondaProKevin
      @HondaProKevin  Před 2 lety +2

      Heck yeah, congrats on your new Grom Charlie!
      You're fine, these engines are used to running wide open with no issues. Now if you start to modify it heavily then you're going to have to start paying attention to some more aspects but in stock form, don't worry about it one bit and wring her neck for all she's got lol! And thankfully you can do that and not worry about going to jail unlike in your GTO lol! In all seriousness though, I've been involved within the Grom community since day one as I was one of the first owners here in the states in 2013. Pair that up working at a Honda dealer for the last 15 years and seeing what comes and goes because of issues etc, the only thing you have to worry about is once you start modifying it. Stock, you'll be able to cruise at those higher RPMs for years and tens of thousands of miles. If you start to tinker with it though and don't do your homework, running lean at those high RPMs can and will do damage because of all the heat and detonation etc.
      The 31 tooth rear sprocket may be a little too large of a drop but I'm super curious on what your outcome will be while the engine is still stock. Nobody else has played around with that drastic of a change with the 2022's different gearing setup over the old Groms just to see how she handles it.

    • @CharlieSolis
      @CharlieSolis Před 2 lety +2

      @@HondaProKevin well alright then! Lol thanks for easing some of my concerns. And that’s exactly why I bought a Honda! I’ve only ever owned Yamaha or Honda dirt bike/atvs. Honda’s reputation is exactly why I ponied up instead of going with some Chinese clone.
      I do have a zoom exhaust pipe and a chimera intake coming, along with the PCV and an auto tuner o2 sensor so that those lean conditions are supposedly accounted for. Are there any other suggestions you might have for me to watch out for while I navigate these waters? I know they make add on oil cooling radiators and what not but to be perfectly honest even when I do get the add ons put in I’ll still probably ride it super conservative. I’m 210lbs and about 390 miles in now and clocking 140.0 miles per gallon so far!
      As for the gearing. I have since realize that the new 2022s have stock 15t up front and 38t in the back 😅 coming in at 2.533 ratio stock (I believe the previous years scorn stock 15t:34t) so I wayyy over compensated with the 31t on the back but that being said I acquired a 14t and 13t for up front to go with the 31t to bring it in to around 13t:31t at ~2.385 or 14t:31t at ~2.214. I’m definitely going to have to probably drastically change the length of the Cha in to make it work but all in all that’s even less rotational mass all around to go with small 13 or 14 up front, AND smaller radius 31 in the back with a shortened chain. 🤷‍♂️ at worst I’m over torquing the lever arm on the smaller rear sprocket radius but I’m still Probably no where near becoming an issue with it. I have a feeling with these new gears 2.38 it will be just enough upper end speed that the loss of torque will be well within acceptable ranges for the straight Stock engine setup because it’s not too much more. Because I figure if just went and jumped up to 17t in the front it’ll still get me 2.2352. But I’ve seen a bunch of people say they’ve had issues with having to grind away the sprocket cover just to get the 17t sprocket and chain to fit in. And ultimately it would increase the chain length and increase moment of inertia/rotational mass. But so even going with the 13t:31t will give me 2.385 drastically reducing chain and sprocket rotational mass/moment of inertia. And then when I put the engine upgrades on I should have no issues with the 14t:31t @ ~2.214and heck maybe even could jump back up to a 15t:31t @~2.07. Or even go a bit milder to 15t:32t @~2.13. I’m going to need a lot of chain to regularly test this though and not wear unevenly on the sprockets 😂😅
      It may be a bit more money to spend considering a single front sprocket is $10 but fingers crossed that early acceleration can be maintained with the lower gear ratio because of the loss of rotational mass during each acceleration 🤷‍♂️😂 all I know is it’ll be worth the experiment to test these out. Any suggestions on lighter rims/tires that don’t cost as much as the bike? that’s the next place to make up time on acceleration without changing engine performance (besides me just hitting the gym and losing 10 lbs of body weight 😂😂😂)

      @CharlieSolis Před 2 lety +3

      @@HondaProKevin give me a year to find a used grom for cheap and I’ll be swapping out the combustion piston head with the stainless steel combustion Tesla Turbines that I make and do R&D on. My latest turbine dyno test with only room temp compressed air is pulling 3.2hp and 5.02ft-lbs of torque to the shaft at 4,500rpm so as soon as I start adding combustion temps to that it should soar far higher than the groms original power output. And the whole thing should be a bolt on retrofit kit that just chains to to the transmission main shaft 🤷‍♂️ we’ll see though. All I know is I want to be the first person with a Tesla Turbine powered grom 😂😂😂

      @@HondaProKevin oh yeah, I’ve been trying to find out how to do it on the 2022 but how would I go about fixing the speedometer for the changed gear ratios so I get the appropriate speed displayed? • @CharlieSolis
      @CharlieSolis Před 2 lety +1

      @@HondaProKevin ok just got back from my first ride with the 14 tooth front and 31 rear on the 2022 grom I have and holy moly….. this is a whole new bike! **From feeling alone** I’m not getting any noticeable acceleration loss from the reduction in gear ratio from the large rotational mass weight reduction with the much much smaller back sprocket. Not to mention the stock rear sprocket has like this giant metal washer around it. Presumably to help protect the frame if the chain ever jumps off but it’s a A LOT of additional rotational mass at the periphery of the stock sprocket really upping its moment of inertia, so very bad for acceleration. And the chain is 4 links shorter while keeping the chain tensioner dang near the center with plenty of room to keep it tight over time as the chain stretches. I pulled out a GPS speedometer on my phone and it’s showing that 35mph on the dash is actually 39-40mph real speed. First gear feels like it goes for days longer than before, 2nd gear is like butter and 25-30mph residential/city cruising is 4000-5000rpm in 3rd gear…. 45-50mph @ ~4500-5000rpm and I’m literally only at half throttle cruising too……🤤🤤🤤 just butter smooth. The motor RPMs at that speed just seems to have a really nice hum note to it that wasn’t even remotely the same before when it was screaming at 6000rpms lol and that’s still stock exhaust too.
      Any suggestions for fixing the dash speedometer to be accurate again?
      Just WOW though I’m BEYOND excited to get this chimera intake and zoom exhaust on with the PCV + auto tuner because I have no doubt this bike could handle the further drop to the 15t/31t with that little bit extra umph. Maybe I’ll even make a tesla turbine turbocharger to go inline with the new exhaust and intake 😂😂😂 This is going to be sooo beautiful!!!

      Mine and every 2022 I've seen to date has the crappy Vee Rubber tires on them. The OG only came with Vee Rubber and then the SF were mixed with Vee Rubber or IRC and now from what I can tell we're back to Vee only lol.
      In my opinion... They are horrible. Hands down the worst tire I have ever ridden on. That's why I made sure to have a new set of Kenda KD1s ready to roll before the bike even got here. I won't do any mountain runs and have been tip toeing around until I get to the portion of the video series where I throw the new rubber on. For a normal rider though, the Vee Rubbers are probably going to be fine but if you like to push it in the least bit, I would throw them in the garbage and if you see the slightest bit of moisture on the road - stay away from it as these things are like glass when you hit water. To me, they just don't give you any feedback. It's grip grip grip, down. If you're just wanting to putt around and commute etc though I'm sure they'll be fine.

      @@HondaProKevin I have a 2018 that I put 5k miles on so far and it's held at wot for 80% of every ride! Haha, all I did was an airbox mod and exhaust plus a tune. I can't wait to get a 22!!

    Use a GPS. The speedo is probably not accurate. My 22 Grom speedo indicates 12% faster than GPS speed. My top GPS speed is 51 mph in upright position.

      Had my SP for 117 miles. I hit 62 once today, and have been up to 58 quite a bit already. Depends on the slope, and the wind direction, and I guess traffic draft. 185lbs. Topped out at 50 alone on a fairly flat road today, but the wind was awful in my face.
