I found another FREE dresser on the side of the road! This little IKEA dresser was covered in a layer of peeling latex paint but I knew I could save it from the trash and do something cool. I used black chalk paint and some oh-so-trendy cane webbing to create a new modern design for this piece. I hope you enjoy!

Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included czcams.com/users/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.
The best teachers acknowledge their mistakes and demonstrate how they fix them. Nice job.
For your cane, try soaking it in water first, then staple to piece. Once it dries, it will tighten up to give you a nice taunt look.
I’ve seen that a few times. I was leery of the moisture ruining the freshly painted finish so I decided to skip that step. It ended up laying very flat on it own and I was able to get some good tension with my staples. If I ever do a larger panel I’ll definitely try the soaking method out. ❤️❤️
I work with cane all the time, I agree you have soak it first to get the tight finish.
@@melissasubatch1324 for this purpose it doesn’t require a super taught finish and the wet cane would have damaged my paint finish.
@@salvagedbykscott I wondered about the moisture factor on the newly painted piece 👍

I appreciate that this video does not have all that typical youtube over excited talking and is peaceful and just goes straight to the point. Thank you for that. Also, your skills and how you did everything so professionally is very inspiring. I'm happily becoming a new subscriber! :)
Ditto about the peaceful, to-the-point approach!! But, going forward, could you also slightly turn down the volume on the accompanying music? Your work is AWEsome & very inspiring!!! Your presentation and the work, itself, very professional. Thank you for sharing what you do.
The clip of you peeling the paint off was sooooo satisfying. I was like whoa I would peel that whole dresser for fun
Lol, trust me, I tried!
I love the black with the rattan.
The smooth finish is lovely. Well done Katie.
I agree lol..
Pro tip: that steel square works great as a straight edge for your saw to ride against giving you straight cuts. Just clamp the straight edge to your work piece.
Next time...if I ever decide to pick up a saw again, lol! Thanks so much for watching.
I cannot even tell you how much I love this!!!!!!! That Cane!!!
Thanks C!

Always excited when you use dark colors, especially black and deep greens. (Guess I'm just tired of white-everything right now.) Nice piece and, as a small-apartment dweller, I really appreciate the scale. Thanks, Katie!
I LOVE the finger pull idea. Genius!
I live in a huge apt in the city, people always leave furniture. I have gotten so many beautiful pieces that I flipped THANK YOU for this video def going to try the cane! BEAUTIFUL def subbing🥰 My son is usually mortified when I get him to help me pick up pieces on the side of the curb but I have a vision 😍
I really like how you give your step by step processes! They’re very helpful with the stages and the types of products needed to accomplish each one.
Degree of difficulty! You nailed it. That is so beautiful. True artist.
Hey Katie! I’m the one that messaged you on IG for advice. Thanks for showing us the other side of this business, it makes me feel like I’m not alone. Beautiful makeover by the way 🤗
Love your channel, honesty, and realness 💗
What an amazing transformation. It turned out so pretty.
It looks great, Katie. I like your honest integrity as well as your design skills.
I love the finished dresser! God bless y’all and stay safe and healthy!
It came out BEAUTIFULLY!!!
Even this is an earlier vid, but you have vision, follow through, a calm explanation, and you showed us your errors and what to do. I really appreciate your transparency. All of us go through this sometimes, but not all of us are willing to show it. Keep up the good work! HUGS!
Beautiful. It looks so high end. Also...howwww satisfying is the spray painting. Love
I love how it turned out! Absolutely beautiful!
Turned out well. Cutting the pulls out was a stroke of genius 👍

You combined so many awesome "upcycling" techniques and it looks absolutely stunning!
Another absolutely gorgeous piece!!! ♥️♥️♥️
Every time I see another video I have a new favorite piece!!! You are so amazing.
Love the color, and the webbing. Adding those half holes in the drawers, just really elevates this piece. Gives it a more simplistic and elegant design. Beautiful job, as always. Great video too😊😊❤
It's great to see how you fixed the issue! Looks beautiful to me. It is so on trend.
My first look at your channel. So nice to see the careful detailing and description of what you did and corrected. Nice design, too. Thank you.
My role model! Thank you for showing the snafu and how to fix it. I absolutely love the came webbing. I have a free piece that I have no idea what to do with but you always inspire me. Thanks again

Beautiful job! Very tenacious. Love the finger hole pulls.
I love this little dresser. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You’ve inspired me to be brave and and tackle some challenges with some dressers I’ve been procrastinating on. It so nice also that your Canadian, I am too, on the west coast now but from Ontario, and nicely familiar with your products. Thumbs up to your thinking outside the box on this little gem! 🇨🇦
This is EXACTLY what I’m going to do to my furniture. Love it! And thank you for the advice.
Thank you Katie, such an inspiring teacher
I'm seeing more and more cane in furniture....I like it! Great job!

Katie I love all of your upcycles...and your intros make me smile! ❤
Thanks for showing the "not so good" finish! REAL life painting! Honestly this was inspiring and refreshing! cool piece!😍
LOVE the makeover! Well done!
Katie, I SO appreciate your honesty in showing both the easy, successful part of furniture re-making, and also the challenges. I usually have at least one major snafu in every project, but sometimes the pivot is better than the original plan, and it always teaches me something new about doing this. Good on you!
I was going to say that exact thing regarding the drawers being different colors. Glad you figured out to apply another coat of black and then mix your topcoat thoroughly. I love this project and all your others too. Fellow painter/stripper here haha.
You are so talented. You have lots of craftsmanship!! I love how it turned out.
Your determination is a wonderful trait of a strong character, Katie. Thank you for sharing and ensuring that others will know how to correct a similar issue.
One of the beautiful make overs I’ve seen ♥️
Very nice and what a transformation!!!!
The finished product was absolutely beautiful 🤩
You are really good at this! Thank you for sharing ❤
Just found your channel and so glad I did. You persevered through the process giving me some very valuable time-saving tips! Love your music selections and volume. I could hear you clearly while enjoying the jazz ambience. Good job Katie. I look forward to more videos while catching up on your previous posts.
your project is amazing. I would not have thought about the caning. great job on doing it
Oh, Katie, I love this! (*really* glad you didn't just give up and put it back out on the street) The finger-pulls-rather-than-handles idea was genius, and the black with rattan is beautiful. Very nice work!
It is such a relief to find things go awry for someone else and its not just me! I've refinished and sold many pieces and some times get a piece that has me frustrated to the point of wanting to throw in the towel! But I take a break from those pieces and go back later, telling them that "I always win" 😆 Thanks for being real.
This is the business I've been after my daughter to begin! Creative people are Awesome! Great work girl! Love it
Very nice job! Glad you took your time and redid it. Stay encouraged! Practice make perfect! Looks great!
I admire how you are determined to do things properly and how well your projects turn out because of it. If I had made the same mistake I would have said to myself I love the unintended gradient effect! and then move on to my next project lol
Lovely..thanks for showing us a fix. Love the finger pulls!
I think the ideas you come up with turn out really well.
The finish on made over furniture always looks better when you strip any prior finish. Looking good!
Wow! Amazing! It came out beautiful.
Nice!!! The finger holes were a great idea. Keeps it simple. LOVE the black with the natural cane.
Love the hole pulls great idea!
I sure admire you for showing us the problems you encountered with this project and the paint color specifically. Your realistic vlog is one of the best in furniture recycle. Great job and beautiful piece!
Great work Katie!! Love the final result and all the wood cutting!!! Amazing!! Love you videos!! 👏
I felt your deception and I loved your attitude towards the problem solving. I feel it's not always easy to live with our art not being perfectly perfect and fighting this sometimes doesn't help. I love how you said : This is not perfect, BUT I have tried new things and learnt something in the process. In the end, I feel that this is what makes us evolve as artists (and humans). Focusing on the positive rather than see what is not perfect.
Your channel is inspiring in many ways ! Thanks for making such great content :)
Beautiful transformation!
a friend who worked in furniture factories on East Coast told us they use special paints that resemble porch paint available to us. may be worth a try on something. another friend in Mexico uses car paint. looked fabulous on kitchen cabinets done in white. in a decor book whey show a hall table done in car paint. stunning.........meant to say porch floor paint.
Love the transformation!
Awesome! Love that dresser! Great tips!
Absolutely gorgeous! Love your work, love your authenticity!
Katie, your dresser is Gorgeous! I love it and I can't believe someone threw it out. Thank you for saving it from the landfill.
Wow...it turned out super....so love it
I watched this again for like the third time lol I cannot wait for next week 💗💗
Again I love your work!!! Great Job!
Nice work Katie! Things happen all the time but you saved this piece and it looks stunning!
You are a painful perfectionist, but that causes you to do high quality work. Beautiful job. Love your videos.
Great save, Katie!
This piece is outstanding. I love the webbing on the drawer. Another trash to treasure. Thanks for another great video !!
Looove this! I just did a piece in black with cane and I’m obsessed with this style. I want to do it for everything!
Loved this. I just repainted my daughter's childhood dresser with black chalkboard paint to use in my bedroom.
Thank you so much for all your videos. You are such an inspiration! 👍🏼
