    The true buff he needs ... being able to dash through obstacles by default, and that 90% of all small ledges that he can't climb over without jumping be changed to simply being able to walk over them.

  • @DystenyKnight
    @DystenyKnight Před 5 lety +7

    I'm currently trying to do an Inferno play-through as just Ranger, and I'm really seeing his limitations. The big gripe for me is how he can't shoot while remaining mobile. Fencer can shoot while dash-jumping, Wing Diver while flying, and Air Raider just doesn't have this problem because of how far away he often is. Meanwhile, with Ranger, if you are sprinting, you aren't shooting, and depending on what you are fighting, if you stop sprinting you just die. Even with the fastest walking speed, enemies on Inferno still overwhelm you easily. All too often, I have to bring a Reverser just because I can't hope to rely on my mobility and just have to face-tank things.
    Additionally, even with the sprint and move speed increases, there are certain attacks I swear Ranger just cannot dodge. Nearly every alien type enemy (except mortars) is too accurate and the only way to avoid their shots is to be very far away. Even with the Under Assist, rolling enemies can catch up with you and keep you pinned down. Erginus has a few sweet spots you can stand in to dodge his attacks (like between his legs or directly ahead of him), but I can't find a single consistent way to dodge Archelus without just stun-locking him. Even the final boss with the green explosive attack and purple dash forward become unavoidable if he is targeting you. It irks me that there is nothing I can do about these things and have to bring a Reverser in nearly every mission including them.

    I agree that it is not correct to say Ranger is the easiest class to play. On Normal or Easy, Ranger is certainly the simplest class to play, and he plays more like other games (FPS games in particular). Wing Diver, Fencer, and Air Raider are all different from any other class in any other game and they require a lot of mental retooling. You can tell, in fact, when someone playing Wing Diver is new, because they player he like a Ranger with a jet pack, standing on the ground shooting and sometimes flying away . Experienced wing divers have a "re-tooled" thought process and use her short ranged weapons + dodging abilities to do things Ranger cannot do. People new to EDF simply have no clue how to play Air Raider or Fencer. (Remember those who thought dash-cancelling was a kind of cheating and refused to do it?!)
    On Inferno, Ranger is the toughest class to play because he is overall the weakest class and, therefore, the skill/knowledge/planning required to beat the higher difficulties is much higher.

    I wonder if it would be nice to have both an equipment AND a vehicle slot. Taking a vehicle is fun, but I also like the speed boosts and such. Who knows what 6 will bring.

  • @thekaiseriswiser4451
    @thekaiseriswiser4451 Před 5 lety +11

    It would be quite silly to nerf the other classes to be as bad as the Ranger, he simply needs a buff. Not a nerf across the board that makes everything pathetic.

    • @KevinEDF
      @KevinEDF  Před 5 lety +1

      I don't mind this idea, I would just want the enemies to be faster on inferno. The ability to dash and fly away from them so easily is my main issues as it makes inferno a bit trivial.

    • @Aiveq
      @Aiveq Před 5 lety

      it might be silly and i generally dislike nerfs of any kind but some just way to high... i seen fencer clear inferno with 250 armor... like wth, is that SLOWEST class? fencer and wing divers get quite sizable boost by having raider on team with transports for speed to make up for slowness of fencer and pointers for firepower. wing gets more consistent dps with chargers which gave more mobility too. but all of that goes out of window cuz those two can outperform teamwork by exploiting nuances which was only buffed in 5 it seems(i only have 4.1 so i base my experience on that). wing and fencer under perform until added raider makes them shine while ranger fills in missing links in strategy. that how me and my buds managed to beat inferno in 4.1 starting with 800-1300 armor range. then you might start min maxing and realize that by exploiting some things you can perform way better and easier if you ignored teamwork. so question is... do you consider good coop when teammates makes your life easier and let you shine or when they just there like peanut gallery to see you perform as one man army?

    • @KevinEDF
      @KevinEDF  Před 5 lety +1

      I do not like a one man army, at least on inferno. I want there to be value to each class in a mission and where team work is necessary on inferno to complete it. EDF 4.1 did a pretty good job of this except ranger could have used the Sprint items in that game. EDF 5, as you said, can be soloed with a fencer or wing diver too easily imo

    edit: i noted explosives and landmines on the arsenal of the ranger, can someone confirm to me if air raider still has those weapons? i will be so sad if that's not the case
    i always thought that the easy on the description was about the simpler mechanics that ranger have compared to the other classes, obviously is the class with the lowest survival chance, but it's not a lie that is mechanically the easyest. Great video as always

    Ranger needs more weapons slots and a second equipment slot, at least for single player. Easiest way to rebalance the class immediately. You could even do it by just modding the game I suppose. If you had the option to bring a shotgun, a sniper AND a rocket launcher, then an explosion proof suit and a helicopter or an explosion proof suit and hybrid liquid armor, that would make this class a lot more viable for solo Inferno. A third weapon slot would also enable the class to bring the useful healing items for Inferno multiplayer.

    • @bensosnowski1128
      @bensosnowski1128 Před rokem

      Omg thank you for reminding me to look at mods. This would be so awesome!!
      I currently only experiment with one weapon slot to try new guns, since if I bring a flamethrower and find out there are spread out and ranged enemies a good backup weapon is mandatory.
      I don’t experiment with equipment at all, besides trying everything once to see what it does.
      It feels like I’m intentionally weakening myself if I don’t use the movement speed equipment every mission.
      Having to choose between fun and optimal isn’t a good thing IMO

    Ranger's items are huge for me, protection from losing speed when being hit / ignoring explosions / bigger pickup range are such a big deal for survival. You can't outrun the monsters (unless you can dashing between buildings for a while) but you'll be able to keep grabbing health drops, keeping yourself alive and hopefully keeping your squaddies in the fight and taking their share of enemy attacks. Vehicles have the same advantages of course, in exchange for limited health. Railgun tanks effectively give you a decent sniper rifle plus your regular two weapon choices.

    i disagree with lowering the other classes they should raise up the damage to the ranger weapons to even out the class on damage since he is on the ground and better vehicles keep ranger the way they are now just ranger weapons match damage like the other classes .

    • @KevinEDF
      @KevinEDF  Před 5 lety

      I don't mind the idea of raising up ranger to the other classes, I would just want the enemies to be faster or more challenging then. My main desire in that statement was to make inferno very challenging for all the classes. Wing diver and fencer are so fast that they can evade enemies to easily on inferno and I do not care for this in edf 5

    Do they even patch these games with balance changes?
    Look at it this way. If inferno is what we are using to judge weapon balance, then ranger in 4.1 took stringer and a rocket launcher, and that was usually it in solo play. In coop, some might take 2 lysanders. The meta was worse, fencer and wing diver was even stronger, relatively speaking, than they currently are now in 5.
    If anything, now we have more variety in weapon choice than we did before with ranger. On another note, I am not sure the game will ever be truly balanced around inferno anyway. I think the best balance has always been with hardest, and ranger is still extremely good on that difficulty; very VERY few people every really delve into inferno, so I doubt the devs care much about that balance.

    • @KevinEDF
      @KevinEDF  Před 5 lety

      The devs did increase rangers inferno level snipers in one patch for EDF 5 but nothing else that I know of. I also love the variety of the weapons that fencer can use now as well as all the classes. It is no longer only master rapier thrust and idunn or stringer af100, or blasthole catapult and I like this.

  • @GeorgePerakis
    @GeorgePerakis Před rokem

    I was very disappointed with the sniper damage as well. I came to find out the maxed out, end level Ptarmigan couldn't even oneshot Colonists on Hardest. Not even Inferno, HARDEST. In SINGLE PLAYER. On Mission 38. Very disappointing. For me, Ranger is only useful for the extra DPS and healing he can provide in multiplayer, even then I'd probably rather have a second Fencer or Air Raider. He does have a place in multiplayer because of his straight forward DPS options as well as his healing items, but every class has good DPS options frankly. If the team only has two or three people there's almost never any room for Ranger in a lot of missions. You NEED a Fencer, you NEED an Air Raider, and a good Wing Diver player is usually preferable to Ranger just because she can keep herself alive more easily and she can save and revive team members.

  • @adriankoch964

    AS LONG AS WE HAVE THE WING DIVERS, WE WILL WIN! EDF! EDF! EDF!
