  • Mozambique's military is struggling to hold back ISIL-linked groups in the northern Cabo Delgado region.
Violence has intensified in recent months, displacing at least 400,000 people.
The government has asked for help from neighbours South Africa and Tanzania, as well as the European Union.
So what's driving the conflict and could it spell trouble for the whole region?
    Presenter: Imran Khan
    Guests:
Fernando Lima - journalist specialising in Mozambique
Angele Dikongue-Atangana - UNHCR Deputy Director for Southern Africa
Adriano Nuvunga - Director, Centre for Democracy and Development

At least 60% of Mozambique's GDP come from foreign aid, and this has culminated in the nation's inability to build up a formidable force sufficient enough to ensure a reasonable measure of state security. With a coastline thousands of miles and a vast land border on the other side, Mozambique's current security apparatus lacks adequate capacity required to secure the nation.

@@setumomahakoe7791 so do you feel that they are using the funds appropriately in your experience. ? The idea seems nice to have mediation if the government isn't capable but it seems like there should be a plan to transition into self governance . Thats what worries me is these groups perpetuating or at least being apathetic in order to continue to recieve funding when nothing in the community is getting done . Its really hard to watch and I can't imagine having to experience it . Let alone having generations of kids born into it with no end in sight . I'm pretty inexperienced ill admit I've only been so many places. But it seems many countries have been destabilized in order for western nations to have a leg up. Thwn they send these groups in to "help" but what do they do . They have such a huge overhead and we have no idea what they do with the money to comes from places like Canada where I live. I'd like thw aid to do some real good and help Africa be able to be the queen she deserves to be . America Britain Canada and all the other countries need to stop stealing from Africa and justify it by providing fake aid in the form of the un and red cross. I am sending prayers your way I have no idea what else to do other than watch and wonder from afar. We have our own atrocities here in Canada as well . The world is hurting
