This video is shared with the permission of the PGA of America who filmed this in 1994. The Q&A is from PGA member Craig Shankland who has released this Moe Norman demo at no charge to the public.
This video is for all the Moe Norman fans out there. It is not instruction, and I no longer teach Moe's Golf swing. In my opinion, there are much easier ways to swing a golf club.
A beautiful soul who would have done the PGA proud. I’m saddened that I only knew of his greatness after his passing. The world needs more people like Moe.

He made 25 cuts and when he finished 4th in New Orleans a couple of other pros gave him a dressing down about his behaviour, dress etc. He felt unwanted and disgruntled so went home to Canada and only competed there. He was still an amateur when he played the Masters and had come down from not playing all winter in Kitchener Ontario. He played with Bob Rosburg the 2nd round and Rossie said he missed only one green and no fairways. Wasn’t comfortable on the fast greens. The guy could flat out play.
@@HILLTOPGOLF putting, short game and pressure are gigantic parts of the game of golf, those things Moe Struggled with. He was great on the range or in practice rounds. Don’t get me wrong, I love Moe Norman but he wasn’t a complete player, kind of a 1 trick pony.

I hit it very straight, guys starting telling me of Mo, so here i am. I never had teaching, i have a putter grip on a driver, people cant fiqure out how my balls stay straight.
After watching Mo, and listening, i actually do alot of his techniques , the reach, the body mechanics. Crazy,
Because people see my club, and think hes a 100 guy, and then they see, im 100% fairway usely every time I play.

I have never heard of this guy until yesterday. ran into an older gentleman at the course and got to chatting and he recommended looking up Moe. and wow I am completely blown away. This guy is an absolute gem. Simply amazing.

My comment is that, after adapting his swing into my game I had a great improvement in all the clubs. I was no longer afraid of the narrow fairways when hitting my driver or 3W. Thank you Moe, wherever you are Sir. Now I am hitting it with a square face instead of going God knows where.
Wow, this man is a genius and such a joy to watch. So sad that he passed away without getting the proper recognition that he fully deserved! I am not a fan of DeShambeau (yet) but I am thankful to him for introducing me to Moe. After this, I will borrow a few key techniques from Moe and adapt my swing to my body...then work the process!! I dont get to play much at all and I shoot in the mid 90's. When I put in the work and break 80 next season the first person I will thank is Moe.
Moe Norman is the only golfing great that understood the golf swing and knew how to explain it. I learn a lot from watching and listening to his demo on parts 1&2 of this video. I like to thank the interviewer for asking so many good questions and the person who posted this video.
The only thing I disagree with is his grip comment. He set all his records and won all his tournaments with a traditional overlap grip.

Fabulous example of the psychology behind positivity, even when life throws nothing but curveballs. It is sad that many couldn't see past his idiosyncrasies. Such a gentle soul.

Gotta love the way he answers the questions before the guy finishes asking them :D; so confident, this is one of the most informative/inspirational golf interviews I've watched.
I broke my back in a motorcycle accident years ago and this swing looked easier on the back. I used some of these techniques and I am now 63 and shoot constant mid 70's, at Torrey Pines no less. Listen to him more than watch him. Never swing hard.

@@alarmservicepros how many times have we heard "strong is wrong"? Not only is it not wrong, it's very right if you dont have a rotational release.
This is the holy grail of the golf swing. After watching the video's I first got the feeling of greatness with the putter - then I got the feeling with my clubs - Moe has revealed the true secret of golf in these videos - If Moe had been able to cope with the tour he would have won every event he played in. When you understand or actually use his technique it is truly the feeling of greatness hitting a golf ball. Its incredible you setup and fire the shot, whether 20 ft or 280 yards. One last thing, I have seen some videos on here of people claming to duplicate his technique - they are not even close.
This is excellent. The interviewer asks precise questions and draws very valuable and helpful information out of Moe. In many interviews with him that I've seen, people seem (understandably) so in awe of his ability, they don't press him for detailed demonstration of what he is doing and how..
I believe the interviewer is Tommy Armour another notable Great of Golf.
An absolute ball striking savant. I love that he gave credit to Jones and NIcklaus. No telling how dominant he could have been on the tour if not for his emotional issues. No one has ever struck the golf ball with such consistent precision. No one could or can touch the man.
Would have been the Tiger Woods of his era. I think. But that's a What If...
He was not well treated or regarded on the tour.
Great ball striker. But in the PGA tour he had the opportunity (25 tournaments) to prove himself against the big boys and twice at the Masters and he fizzled.
@usmcforever7630 no need to prove himself. Winning doesn't make you the best at something. Just like the best musician on earth probably doesn't have a record deal. They just play their instrument. Just like Moe did.
@@AL4NGDROE no doubt, he was a great ball striker. You do measure a great golfer against the big boys not the Canadian Tour. George Knudson was also a great golfer in that tour.
This man got so much joy out of golf. You can tell he was proud of his game.

Gotta love a guy who plays and talks about his 2 wood. Saw Moe live at the range the first year the Canadian Open moved to Glen Abbey. He was surrounded by other pros.
I love it when the guy interrup 's Moe at 0.27 when he's about to say " that's the other thing I do so well" LOL . Moe loves saying this. He says it over and over again.He repeats this saying again at 0.38 and man I love it. God did bless Moe Norman. Top Man.

Moe completes what every golfer needs. Not to worry. The fundamentals are fine. But the execution is not to be rigid. But to trust and enjoy that your swing will work if you relax enough and not worry but to enjoy and trust you're good enough if you don't worry and try to work the ball too much. To accept you'll hit it fine and straight and not be rigid and fearful. Be loose and confident. It's a life lesson.
Absolutely brilliant! Saw him in person at the old Municipal Golf Course in Montreal many years ago still swings the same wonderful way!

Had a friend some years ago. She was 60 and a scratch golfer ...played from the mens tee. She used Moes technique. String straight every single time.

Norman’s phenomenal skill as a ball-striker often overshadows his excellent playing record. He won 54 tournaments and set 33 course records. He shot three 59s and made 17 holes-in-one. He played briefly on the PGA Tour in 1959 but after receiving a dressing-down from officials and players for his unconventional behaviour following a fourth place finish at the Greater New Orleans Open, he was so upset he vowed never to play on the tour again. He returned to his native Canada

This man is so inspirational in promoting the simplicity of the golf swing in todays high tech, know it all complicated coaches.
It is amazing how simple the golf swing can be. I quit teaching conventional golf a couple of years ago because it is WAY to complicated. I feel sorry for people trying to play that way unless they are ungodly fit, flexible, young, and have a steel spine. LOL

You're an insensitive idiot. If you took 2 of his concepts and practised them, you could learn to put golf balls in a 10 foot circle from 170 yards out. Making comments like this about someone who's deceased is the only reason I wasn't willing to let that comment of yours go. The man deserves your respect, not your ridicule...he created swing principles that stand the test of time that people are just starting to recognize now. You may call him a clown, but you're wearing the makeup and living in a tent.

I'm surprised more instructors out there don't teach this type of swing. The genius of this man is ridiculous. My mind was blown listening to this.
But the true genius of it is it’s HIS swing, and as he said, you have to find your own swing. That’s his biggest message- find what works for you, and not try to copy anyone else.
@@thetowndrunk988 exactly. Trying to mimic someone else’s swing isn’t the answer. You can take certain fundamentals and aspects from others of course but just trying to swing a carbon copy is foolish. There’s so many unique swings that have won majors and if someone had tried to change their swings to fit a mold, it probably would have ruined their game.
I was thinking the same thing as I watched and I guessed that it's because it is not a pretty swing but a workman-like swing. And even though likely more effective, we all admire and have been brainwashed to achieve the former but which only few really can.

I don't Moe ever felt hurt about anything he couldn't control. He's too simplified. Maybe you may feel hurt, for that is the only person you can speak of is self.
According to his biography (which is very positive) his parents came to many tournaments and he ignored them.
So true. It appears in life he was seen and treated as a misfit but on the tee he was and felt a king. A huge differentiator for him. He found his place where he could swell with pride for his effort and accomplishment. We all should have such a place.

@@jackvanderpool3417 You miss the point the life point. Your bank manager might tell you different but it is All about play not score or how far you hit it off the tee. Purity of technique is excellence. That makes him a Zen Master. You cannot win a major if you are not in the field. Now if you win the Canadian Open which is part of uspga tour you get a two year exemption. A major would have given him a 5 year exemption. The world would have changed for him then but people did not want to make it happen in the USA.
People make out he always looked like he does but there is a radio interview he did that is on CZcams that is called a 1963 Radio interview however within same he is asked his age he says 31 that makes it 1960 he was born in 1929.
A lot of the irregularity with Moe was due to adverse comments by others who could not hold a candle to him. He attained so he deserved to.proclaim. A lot of people have proclaimed before they attained & this just made it more arduous for them to achieve. Moe in golf and life complied with and exceeded universal law. What a true legend. 3 rounds of 59, 17 holes in one 41 course records. The last score of 59 by him when he was 62 years old.
Pete sampras once said the most important thing in playing great tennis was - self belief - and moe definitely has that .
A remarkable person, not only his swing but he was a very intelligent and nice person.

I had the pleasure of talking to a golf partner and friend of Moes today. An 88 year old pin setter who worked with him at a bowling alley near Kitchner Ontario. His stories were like they happened yesterday in his mind. I'm looking forward to talking to him to learn more about this great little known golfer.
More Norman is not "little known" Tiger said he's only one of 2 golfers that ever owned his golf swing...Hogan was the other.

Love watching Moe, what a nice person who has shown us all how a golf ball should be hit - straight controlled flight. Something the rest of us can't do. A true master, i wish i could of had the oportunity to meet him. In my view the best golfer that ever existed. He mastered the technique of hitting the golf ball.

The more I watch this guy the more I convinced that one day the next generation of golfer will start to adapt Moe's mechanic's,Not saying they will hit a ball the same as Moe as he said he ever body is different, but his theory is very sound and playing ten years and only missing one fairway says a hell of a lot about his style.
Bryson has definitely taken alot of Moes moves to create a very similar swing.
Hilarious when he says "would not recommend this method to other people, they would miss the ball". That's his sly humour talking, and afterward the Natural Golf Method was being marketed as instruction...so he gets the recognition and credit for the origination of the dynamics of this swing style. But it was moreso after he passed. Great talent. Unmatched.
God bless this brilliant self made man- he owned his swing and no one ever hit the golf ball better than him - and he knew it! Unfortunately he was treated horribly in the US when he went on Tour here - who knows how many Majors he might have won. A legend and I'm so excited to be changing my swing to his unique single plane. If it's good enough for Bryson DeChambeau it's certainly worth my concerted effort.

Would love to see at the end of the video, a slow pan of the camera over to a huge mound of golf balls within a 5 foot radius 240 yards down the fairway.
Maybe there was no mound but a normal pro-like dispersion. That’s more realistic.

Moe Norman was unique, incredible. God gifted him with his golf swing. It's actually very difficult for recreational golfers to try and emulate it, I personally wouldn't even try. He's so far from the ball, he has to sort of get down to reach. Beautiful thing. Very difficult to master. For Moe it was natural.
Excellent - I've watched Moe hundreds of times but one this one with the zoom-in, he very clearly illustrates the BENEFIT of preventing the left leg from bending laterally. True, the sideways bend often leads to excessive hip rotations which leads to shots that draw, hook or even duck hooks! Don't ask me how I know - suffice it to say I've reformed from focusing on strong left hip "Reverse C" rotation and moving to the Single Plane Swing that prevents left knee rotation at impact - NAUGHTY, LOL!
The thing I love most about his swing is that his hands never get above his shoulders. I have been doing same thing for 2yrs now and have been hitting ball much straighter....Thanks Moe.. RIP.

Only just discovered this guy, man what a guy. Imagine being run over by a car and dragged 100 meters, survived but not taken to hospital because his family was too poor. The amount of pain he must've suffered is unimaginable, this was before painkillers were readily available. They say he had autism, but more likely it was brain damage suffered in the accident.
Some old bloke I joined for the last hole told me to check moe out. No regrets! 😂
The secret to hitting straight shots is getting face aligned to target not at impact but when the ball releases off the face. If you watch the action of Moe’s grip carefully you will see it allowed his wrists to hinge back a lot in the backswing but they locked when coming back to how he oriented them when lining up his body to the ball. When the wrist come back and lock it creates a law of physics reaction that causes the ball stuck to the face to explode off more then in the conventional swing which is a non-stop sweep through the ball. At impact he lifted up his back foot to keep everything moving, swinging the club up without the wrists turning over in the finish as they do when using the Vardon grip. I’m aware of two other golfers who used the same “lock wrists to square face” ball release technique: Ben Hogan and Harry Frankenberg (aka Count Yogi). And me, I adopted that technique into my swing a dozen years ago after studying and emulating the swings of those three. At the time I was working at a course where the teaching pro taught the single plane swing as part of the Todd Graves franchise using a set of same length irons.
Whenever I want to feel better? I just watch Moe Norman videos.

Amazing life story- check his book out. Setting up pins in a bowling alley in Kitchener , Ontario, Canada in the winter- then in one week being at Agusta- only guy there without a tan. He did so much in his life with so many challenges and discouragement. What a success he was , and class move by Titleist giving him 5K a month for life. Since that move, I have liked Titleist and became a customer.
Didn't know about Titleist sponsorship...nice move on their part. You can see that Moe was a fella that saw truth and things in straight forward ways, but there's a child-like view of things...especially for a man his age in this video...not a Jack or a Tom, or even a Trevino...just innocence and belief.
Had no idea titleist did that for him. My next set will be one of theirs.

Just the observation of an old player and teacher who's been around the game for over 70 years, actually a PGA Half Century Club member. Moe is the only golfer I've ever seen who has the mental and physical mechanics to do the same thing shot after shot, day after day, year after year. Never a mental or muscular twitch! Incredible! Even the greatest billiard players of all times missed straight on shots occasionally. Moe didn't,( or so he says). Think of that! I never watched Moe in person but I've had the good fortune of watching, filming, and even talking to, dozens of the great players going back to Bobby Jones and I never saw one who could do this. In '56 I did watch Sarazen demonstrate bunker and medium wedge shots and he was incredible, but nothing like Moe. It is actually scary, and to me it borders on the supernatural plane, hitting one perfect shot after another, all the while yakking some jibberish about what he thinks he's doing. Anyone ever watch him putt?

The comments about the legs and knees and staying on target seems to make a lot of sense the way Moe explained it.
Mighty Moe the greatest golfer there ever was or ever will be.
Moe did use an overlap grip for all of his armature and professional career. It wasn't until after he 'retired' from pro golf that he started the 10 finger grip. All the 10 finger grip does is reduce the club by one or two at the most in distance.
Doesn't matter though, I'm learning to swing like Moe and I love it. Wish I'd known about this swing in 1987.
Moe is the greatest of all-time in my mind. Better than Hogan.
My favorite part is people gathering spring and watching. Would love to have had a chance to see him in person. Amazing human being

Just keep in mind what all good ball strikers tell you: the golf club is the extension of your arms.
Thats exactly what Moe is doing. His arms and the club are just on line while addressing the ball.
Try it and your will see the difference in the swing.

moe and ben hogan vids really helped my ball striking skills. the concepts are great. not everything on moe's style suits me. same with the hawk's swing. I'm having so much fun trying to figure my game out! great game!
