    It is actually terrifying how accurately your analogy about Snyder making this movie "the way someone would make a movie for dogs" explained my feelings about Rebel Moon. I watched the entire run in one sitting and had so many criticisms, mainly around the pacing, character development, and random shit. At the same time in almost every scene there was at least one thing that I absolutely loved, which sort of balanced out the viewing experience.
    Rebel Moon felt like someone (maybe a close friend of mine) had offhandedly listed things that I love in fiction and Zack Snyder decided to make a movie I specifically would enjoy. The end result was a movie I found flawed in many ways but at the same time couldn't bring myself to hate --it was almost like an uncanny thing. I couldn't put the exact feeling into words but yeah, I am absolutely the dog in the analogy.

      Well, maybe I wasn't one of the people that this movie was made for, but I also LOVED the "dog" illustration. But yeah, the pacing in this movie was driving me crazy. It felt simultaneously rushed (in the way the team was assembled like a rushed RPG game) and too slow (I think the characters just didn't grab me). Maybe I'm just not a "Zack Snyder" guy.

      That's my pet peeve for Mediaeval-setting movies too. . . where the tapestries look the way they look NOW -- all faded and dulled by the intervention centuries. Unlike the average Mediaeval illuminated manuscript, tapestries got exposed to sunlight, and periodic beatings to clean off the dust, they therefore suffered more loss of pigment brilliance.
      But when they were new, Mediaeval tapestries had some brilliant colors -- they didn't look faded from the start!

    LOTR set the template for modern fantasy and Star Wars set the template for modern science fiction. People were more accepting of that up until the franchise went downhill. Now, anything Star Wars-ish has to contend with accusations of being a vague rip-off to something a lot of people legitimately hate. LOTR won’t suffer the same fate due to Rings of Power being so terrible and so different from the source material that it’s only connected by money and legal rights. Coming right out and saying this was a rejected Star Wars script wasn’t the draw Netflix counted on like Amazon was clearly trying with ROP. If anything, it probably turned off die hard fans

    "I was really paying attention and it still felt like I was missing entire scenes"
    You described the first and only time I saw Force Awakens. The jump around in that movie was way different than previous movies and there seemed to be no no coherent explanation of why they kept transitioning between places, why did they just find the falcon randomly, why is there no security system, why can Rey just fly it with insane skill and no experience flying any ship, why do they then nonsensical met Han on some garbage ship at the exact momyhe was being attacked and right after finding his ship, why/when did they go to forest planet with "not female yoda", why is the lightsaber there, and why Rey suddenly had Jedi powers with no training. I think someone described it as a need to shove as many vistas in as possible because "that's star wars!"... I walked out of the theater confused, not comprehending that I would ever hate a new star wars movie.

    Something funny about how similar Rebel Moon and Rogue One are, is both movies start with a version of the opening of Inglourious Basterds. They both do their version of the Hans Landa farm house interrogation; and for all the problems Rebel Moon has, Rebel Moon pulls it off vastly better than Rogue One. In fact, the two characters in Rogue One and Rebel Moon (played by Ben Mendelsohn and Ed Skrein) filling that Landa role are essential the same characters. Rebel Moon pulls that character off better too, since he at least has a good scene, and doesn’t have the problem Rogue One has where the guy that’s the main villain of the movie ends up getting overshadowed by other villain characters.
    And speaking of Tarantino, movies that are takes on other things, and The Getaway. Since The Getaway is still fresh in your mind, you should watch From Dusk till Dawn, which in a way is a play on The Getaway, and in a way is a play on the books ending that doesn’t make it into either movie version. The book actually shows them in El Rey.
    I don’t know if you’ve every seen any Takashi Miike movies, but he’s got movie called 13 Assassins that’s pretty great. It’s a remake of a ‘60s movie, and it’s very Seven Samurai. And in 2017 he did an adaptation of Blade of the Immortal that in some ways feels like a more comic book version of 13 Assassins. He isn’t as prolific anymore, but from like the mid ‘90s to maybe just a few years ago he was easily one of the best working directors there was.

    I genuinely enjoyed this movie but, I can totally understand why it wouldnt be everyone's cup of tea. I actually enjoyed that they did all the action in slow mo because it restricted all the camera movements to show super solid easy to follow action. There was no Shakey cam. It was all fluid shots. The films color gradient wasnt so dark that I needed to turn the brightness up. In fact I often found the colors and, backgrounds to be delightful. And, I thought it was a pretty great take on seven samurai in space.

  • @reynoldrosa
    @reynoldrosa Před 7 měsíci +8

    I saw it today and it was terrible. Supposedly, the R-rated version is supposed to be better. They say that cut is a totally different movie. I believe it because the Snyder cut of Justice League was completely different from the theatrical cut, but his cut was four hours long. It’s twice as long as the theatrical cut.
    Splitting up a movie in to a miniseries is exactly what Quinten Tarantino did with the Hateful Eight. The theatrical cut was two hours and 47 minutes long. The extended cut was three and a half hours long. However, instead of releasing it as a single film on Netflix, he split it up into four parts.
    I think part of Snyder’s problem is that he can’t tell a story in under two hours. Just about all of his movies are over the two hour mark. His extended cuts are even longer. I think he needs to work on being more concise. Many people criticized Rebel Moon for being so disjointed. That’s probably because he had to cut so much out to make the film as close as possible to two hours. Unlike other directors that add scenes that were cut from the film in order to make the extended cut, Snyder always plans some kind of an extended cut from the beginning. That’s a problem, and it shows in the quality of his work. Very few movies can work with a length of more than two hours. Snyder’s films don’t fall into that category. Even though I liked his cut of Justice League better, I couldn’t wait for it to end.

    The Star Wars pitch was before any of the Disney Star Wars movies had come out, and I think before all but the original Michael Arndt pre sale version of The Force Awakens had actually been written. The pitch is right from the beginning of the Disney buyout of Lucasfilm. I think rumors of it were going around shortly before they even announced JJ would be directing what would become The Force Awakens. That’s something I found kind of interesting while watching this. It had me wondering how much of what we’re seeing in this version of the movie was in the original Star Wars pitch version. Because a whole lot of stuff that’s in this is in a number of different Disney Star Wars movies. Apart just from Star Wars, the lead girl’s backstory is basically the backstory Gamora gets in Infinity War, and the Cantina as a brothel (which is apparently something they’ll show more of in the unrated version) is in Guardian’s of the Galaxy 2. It even kind of seems like it was going to lead into the Emperor having a kid, unless the girl was originally going to be Leia or a younger version of Rey.

    • @Newnodrogbob
      @Newnodrogbob Před 7 měsíci +1

      So…what you’re hinting at is that maybe Disney stole a bunch of ideas from a pitch they rejected from a director with a history of super derivative writing? I mean, I guess anything is possible…

    • @DIOBrando-ij2bp
      @DIOBrando-ij2bp Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@Newnodrogbob Perhaps. Although technically they’d probably own the pitch, so it likely wouldn’t really be “stealing” for them to use aspects from it if they wanted.
      It’s just interesting. And it makes me wonder how much of what is in Rebel Moon was part of the original pitch, and how much came after the fact. Because the timing of the pitch is before any Disney Star Wars anything came out. This movie is practically Rogue One...Rogue One takes even more from Inglourious Basterds than this, and also has a whole Apocalypse Now Colonel Kurtz section with Forest Whitaker, but they’re very similar movies. I’m also not sure Michael Arndt‘s pre JJ version of The Force Awakens even had Finn, it sounds like that version of the movie had a version of Rey traveling with Luke, and had the original Star Wars characters in it more. And at least the announcement of JJ Abrams being on The Force Awakens comes after rumors that Zack Snyder was pitching a Star Wars movies. If Snyder’s pitched contained the former Stormtrooper character we see in Rebel Moon, it isn’t out of the question that, that idea found its way into The Force Awakens when Abrams and Kasdan were doing rewrites in the year between JJ came on board and they cast the movie.
      Some of Rogue One and Rebel Moon similarities could also just be coincidentally. It could be purely coincidence that they both have Hans Landa type characters and rip-off the opening of Inglourious Basterds. Basterds was a big movie that was well regarded. Snyder pitched his Seven Samurai Star Wars movie three (almost four) years after Basterds, (or at least that’s when the pitch was first being talked about) Rogue One is announced five years after it. Just about every big Men-on-a-Mission movie since Basterds pulls from Basterds too; Captain America did, Woman Woman did, Overlord did, Valley of the Dead did. So this in and of itself doesn’t really mean anything. But still, the similarities are interesting, it does seem like there’s something to consider.

      @Newnodrogbob Před 7 měsíci +1

    Kora escapes the assassination attempt with the princess, hides away near the space viking village. The Empire shows up, looking for rebels, starts messing with the villagers. Kora, once an evil soldier, is affected by the princess' compassion, as is hinted at in the movie, and risks saving the villagers because it's the right thing to do.
    Now, with the threat of the Empire's return and discovery of their stationed troops slaughter, she flees to a nearby city with the princess, but again, the Princess tells her that being a leader means taking risks, and the Princess wants to go back to defend the people they have endangered.
    In the city, they visit a gladiatorial arena and Kora enlists to fight as a means to gather a few top tier challengers to her cause. She impresses all the characters we see in the movie by defeating them in combat.
    They return. General Titus hatches a genius plan, using the kindly robot to load each of the fighters into surprise crates back onto the dreadnaught. They kill everyone, take over the ship and take the fight to Motherworld and restore the Princess to the throne for episode 2.
    Five minutes of thought. Literally.

      @@joshuareynolds23 Nah. Seven samurai has been retread a number of times. Magnifiscent seven and the like. Even done in space before with the bounty hunters episode of the clone wars. Those werent bland...this was just bland.
      Everything was just exactly what youd expect at any moment without being particularly exciting. None of the characters had stand out personalities, and besides nemesis taking on the spider-lady...they didnt even have interesting action scenes.
      The only time the movie surprised me was when the rogue pilot betrayed them. And the only reason it surprised me was because it was SO OBVIOUS he was going to betray them I figured it was a misdirect. So it surprised me by being unsurprising even in that moment.

      It's not bad though it's cinematic. The fights aren't meant to be accurate to real life fights they are meant to be dramatized. The fight between the witch hat lady and, the spider are meant to parallel what they've both lost.

    That’s one diagnosis (the movies for dogs thing) but based on interviews surrounding Sucker Punch, it seemed more that he wrote storyboards for his wife, and/or children with the superhero ones, then slavishly manufactured a slow motion version of those animatics for the general population.
    It’s a potential explanation as to why so much of his content comes off as trying to demonstrate what he doesn’t understand.

    Sounds like a total rehash of Samurai 7 aka The Magnificent seven (starring Steve mcqueen) aka Seven Samurai....

Probably makes for more drama and better action and I am upset now.

    I think it would have done better as a miniseries on cable than as a broken 2 part movie that started as a fetch quest where nothing REALLY happened leaving us to hope part 2 will actaly ha e a real plot. I do respect the fact that its a new IP and not some remake or some hacked in star wars thing. I didnt really swe the culture war stuff except for a 5'5" woman beating an entire unit of soldiers on her own. Thats just modern girl boss stuff not really culture war stuff. I get what you are saying but we know this is a girl boss to satisfy hollywood. She protects the guy from getting assaulted in the "gay" bar as well. I respect your take but i saw it differnt. Far worse was the mmo fetch quest that is all of part one and we are supposed to hope part 2 will have an actual story. That was way worse to me than the girl boss stuff.

    The reason he makes movies like this is because he is a director of commercials. Every scene is made that way, to make an impression, not to tell a story. It is like 2 hour long trailers.
    The strange thing is that he lacks any form of imagination and will to create something new. I don't get how anyone can be so successful in a creative industry and be so totally uncreative.

He’s the very definition of “style over substance”. But Rebel moon doesn’t even have any style. It’s an ugly, bland movie with a shallow depth of field.

    I can't hate this movie... It was basically The Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven as a space opera, presented with striking Zac Snyder visuals, and frankly, that's my jam. The characters were pretty interesting even if the story was pretty derivative.
    I don't want to oversell it... It's far from the best movie I've ever seen. It's pretty far from the best Zac Snyder movie I've ever seen, but it's nowhere near as awful as many people say it is, and like I said: I can't hate it.
    PS. I also thought the villain was Nicholas Hoult. Did not see Ed Skrein in there at all until after I'd read the credits.
