  • Reflux is a disease that affects millions of people every day. GERD or gastroesophageal reflux, is a well-known problem that causes heartburn, indigestion, stomach discomfort, digestion issues, and left untreated, even can cause cancer. Laryngopharyngeal Reflux or LPR, also known as silent reflux, is reflux that affects the structures of the throat as well as the sinuses, ears, windpipe and lungs. LPR is as common if not more common than GERD. Typical symptoms of throat clearing, lump in the throat, chronic coughing, voice changes and sore throat are often confused with other diseases such as asthma, allergy, and sinus disease. LPR can also lead to asthma exacerbation, recurrent sinusitis and recurrent ear infections.
Join Craig Zalvan, MD, FACS of ENT and Allergy Associates as he helps one identify these diseases in family members. He will discuss how these diseases are diagnosed and most importantly, treated. Learn about the approach to treating reflux which involves a more diet based approach rather than the use of medications to suppress acid.

Thank God for this interview with this doctor. 20 years ago I had massive coughing which led to what looked like asthma attacks. Deep hard nonstop coughing for hours. I first went to an ENT who gave me every medicine in the cabinet and nothing worked. After three years I left this doctor and went to an allergy doctor. I went to the allergy doctor for another three years taking every medicine in their cabinet, multiple allergy testings, tons of different allergy meds and shots. Wound up worse and worse. Put on on an inhaler along with the medicines and shots. And finally got so bad within the three years of seeing this allergist that I had to run into the office for breathing treatments. Because of what looked like asthma attacks. Did this for three years.
Long story short, I changed my diet to be ultra clean, organic and nutrient dense. also strict to no wheat no gluten no dairy no sugar. Nothing processed. Began using supplements and praying to become well enough to get out of bed and be productive.
It worked!!! I have stuck by this diet and lifestyle strictly for 20 years
Now, I inexplicably find myself with the same postnasal drip which causes the same massive uncontrollable coughing to the point where I can’t catch my breath.
There’s nothing I can do to improve my diet. After studying this problem best as I can not being a medical professional, I am quite certain that the massive, unrelenting stress has caused the silent acid reflux. I had never had an acid reflux problem. Certainly there’s nothing I can change in my diet. I refused to take the medication’s they tried to force on me. I have been looking and looking and looking for the cause to find the solution.
In the process I first began using baking soda and water when the acid would start up. But then I came to understand that my problem is actually no acid due to stress. So I am trying to rest and sleep. In this process I have discovered that the reason I can’t go to sleep and the reason I can’t wake up and the reason that I’m sweating all the time and that I can’t remember anything is because I have burnt out my adrenals.
In the meantime I carry with me at all times baking soda and water… Which I’m really not using now since I realize I have low acid. So I also carry apple cider vinegar in water with stevia.
And although I don’t like pharmaceutical drugs I am currently taking Xanax to try to help me go to sleep and get on a better schedule. Lack of sleep now due to adrenal burnout seems to be a big part of my issue with low/no stomach acid. The sad thing is I don’t have an open minded doctor/partner in my healing process.
Oh….And the reason I figured out it was adrenal fatigue is because I wound up in the hospital on IV of potassium and calcium… hypokalemia and hypocalcemia. What? With my diet?? It made no sense. I went as deep as I could go with Google and Facebook and CZcams and finally was able to piece together my symptoms from 20 years ago and now. At Least now I know what it was 20 years ago as well. Silent acid reflux but there was no stomach acid issue back then. . But no doctor here in FLORIDA-duh wants to collaborate or hear this (or anything). from a patient.

Yep, most doctors won't veer outside the deadly clutches of INSURANCE COMPANIES, and PHARMACEUTICAL money. The best chance we have, my friend, is to seek out one of the rare doctor/specialist near our location who actually care to jump through the hoops to actually work with patients to improve their condition, OR research research research online and try things on our own. I'm a few months in to this process, after 6 years of wringing the necks of my local doctors who just care to prescribe PPIs and do endoscopies with no meaningful followup.

I have been taking Weber naturals digestive enzymes (50mg Betaine HCl) and vitamin D as per the advise of Dr. Eric Berg in one of his LPR videos and it's working for me. I stopped taking, more like I was taking 1 tablet for 2 days thinking I can reduce the dose, unfortunately mucus in my throat is back. I am jumping back on to digestive enzymes + Vit D routine, let's see if it works for me again. It probably will. What I learned from watching all these hour long seminars is that, doctors try to end the symptoms and that's the best they can do. Note that I am somewhat disciplined and I have changed my diet and lifestyle a bit.

I’ve had the swollen throat a lot constant clearing of your throat the coughing in fact I’ve been coughing for the last two months. It’s the worst feeling because you feel like it’s deep in your chest and so you’re doing whatever you can to try to cough it up but it’s acid. Saw an ENT and he was no help so I have a endoscopy next week. Not sure if it’ll help but hoping to have some results. i’ve cut everything out of my diet for the last 31 days been on PPI‘s and other stuff and nothing is taking this cough away. Hi to everyone, seems like we all are struggling with same issue here, So we might be able to connect on some level. One day, we were doing BBQ (Good old days) and I was having a beautiful burger, but that was the day I have discovered about Acid Reflux and I have a feeling that I can't swallow that burger and choked on it, was not a good feeling, and later on it gotten worse and I won't be able to eat anything not even a bread and was scared to drink water, Just didn't Make any sense.
I went to my GP and she did mention it could be because of Acid reflux, she got me on Omeprazole, and she asked me to visit her in 2 weeks. I was on liquid diet for 15 days and have lost 5kg. So basically didn't help.
In some cases H.pylori could be a reason, so in my case this bacteria have eroded my stomach lining and that has caused Acid reflux. Got and endoscopy done and this bacteria was positive. So for it just this bacteria and GERD. Did my antibiotics course and some PPI.
but recently, I was having this constant mucus in my throat, again like everyone I thought it was an allergy I have having from something. Now that I have focused more on it and found out that it is different kind of Acid reflux.
I am doing much better now, so thought to share some foods and stuff to avoid.
Any food OR drinks, PH below 5 you should avoid, eg Wine, beers, smoking, Mint, Tomatoes, garlic, Oily and processed food, Fatty food, coffee ( De-caffinated coffee are acidic too).
Drink lot of water and go for walks. try this for one month you will feel the difference.
Main problem is the PEPSIN and it sits in the throat, ears to even sinus, do when you eat acidic food it activates the in those affected areas and it start eating you body protein and you feel sore throat to other symptoms.
So low acidic diet will help with this and use PPI and Gaviscon to neutralise the stomach acid.
There is so much details to it, In short life style changes will cure Acid reflux, Meds won't be able to do it by itself.
    Good luck to all :)

This is very informative, thank You. I struggle with silent reflux sińce getting covid 4.5 months ago.
I disagree however with one thing,
I dont think people loose weight because they change their diet to a healthier mediterrainian one, but because they are Simply getting less calories in. Its hard to get calories in with so much restrictions.

It was 8 weeks cough post covid that resolved after antibiotics.

Dry throat below Adams apple to the point it feels somewhat numb which is very uncomfortable for everyday life.
Another one is after drinking cold water i would get a feeling like a ball is stuck in my throat and It lasts about a minute until my throat release the trapped air and perform like this very weird burp.
Anxiety through the roof ofcourse with history of few panic attacks.

It was all fine until he said all meat is the same and causes chronic disease. He mentions the mediterranean diet without including the seafood and fish that's such a big aspect of it.. Many of the healthiest cultures around the world regularly eat meat and fish. How many extremely positive studies with fish are there, so many. As long as the fish is low in heavy metals and not farm-raised..Grass fed beed and lamb are a powerhouse of nutrients. Chicken and pork are the most unhealthy probably out of all. Tons of people have difficult with many plants as well, this is proven also, it just depends on your genes and body.
