  • Thanks to your feedback from my last video, I decided to go out and try using the Pocket 3 in the normal colour mode to see if there is a huge difference when compared to using the D-LOG profile. The results are......... well, you'll see!
    Please leave some opinions and feedback so we can keep the discussion going!
    Thanks,
    David.

      You surely show your investment. I previously bought the Gopro11, but the pkt3 was my hidden choice. At 64 I'd like to start making vids on personal likes and views. A plethora of ideas, but limited ability. This is a challenge I'm keen to jump on and you're a "best step" on acheiving a stumbling move towards a goal I've set for myself!

    Thank you for making this video. Added the pocket 3 to my video making kit and it’s been confusing on whether to use the vlog, HLG or the ‘normal’ color profile. I recorded in HLG thinking it wouldn’t be as much work then finding out afterwards, so much more work. I have a FX3 and don’t mind color-grading but when you have so many different video sources (iPhone, GoPro and now pocket 3) the work adds up.
    I agree, the footage you took is more than fine and I am well and truly sold on plain-Jane color profile. BTW, subscribed!!!!

      Also, thanks for taking the time to comment. It is much appreciated! Since making this video I find that I swing from DLog to Normal profile from time to time. They are both incredibly easy to work with but I still find the conversion LUT oversaturates things and I need to dial it back quite a bit!
      I still love it and it’s an amazing bit of kit!!!

    I've only just noticed this excellent (short, yay!) upload. Very good illustration of the high quality of the normal mode. It seems to almost be like an AI thing, not just plain exposure setting - for instance, faces against a bright background don't go dark which you might expect. Personally I'm not into colour tweaking much, so I'm very content to use the normal colour profile by default.

      Hey Peter!
      I am getting into colour grading just now and it’s a whole new discipline to learn! If you are sticking with the normal colour profile then it’s going to be great (and easier!!)

    Depends what you want to do with the footage/the output/if you want to grade to match other cameras or for an aesthetic.
    Also depends on how you are with grading. I always shoot LOG on every camera as I love having full control and flexibility, and get the most dynamic range out of the image.
    If you’re after a more “straight out of camera” look, then standard profile is fine. If you want to do any significant tweaking/grading to the image, then 100% LOG.

    • @davidmuirphotography

      Thanks Gav! Can I ask you a question? With the Osmo D-Log, I find that the DJI conversion LUT is very aggressive. Do you need to ‘convert to Rec 709’ or can you just colour correct the D Log footage in the editing software? I have done that in FCP and I’ve never had an issue with it. I’m just not sure if this is converting to Rec 709!!

    • @gavthane
      @gavthane Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@davidmuirphotography I never really use conversion luts, I just use the curves to bring the contrast back in and the saturation manually, and then create a preset (I work with Final Cut and filmconvert nitrate mainly)

    • @davidmuirphotography
      @davidmuirphotography  Před 5 měsíci

      I’ve struggled with the phrase ‘you need to convert it to Rec 709. In my head I thought that was a definitive thing, like almost a coding format within the video file that other software would recognise.
      I now feel it is just an upper and lower limit that you stay between to maximise details and create a video that will be most accurately represented on the widest number of displays. I now just use colour wheels and amend the luma values to not peak and everything in the middle is personal preference!
      Still don’t know if that’s right or wrong!🤣🤣🤣🤣

      @twalker294 Před 4 měsíci

      @@davidmuirphotography The DJI LUT is definitely aggressive and many times I have to dial it back a bit in order to get the look that I like. But no applying it is absolutely not a requirement. If you can edit the footage to your liking manually then by all means do it that way.

    Hi David - this video shows very well how good the normal colour profile is. I have not seen anyone mention that if you use H265 as the container, the normal profile saves in 10 bit. I have tried editing 10-bit normal profile shots, and unlike the 8-bit shots, I get a lot of latitude when editing the colour. I have pushed some of my changes to the limit to see if I get banding, and I could not see any. Have you had a similar experience?

    • @davidmuirphotography
      @davidmuirphotography  Před 6 měsíci

      Hey Col!
      It’s a similar story here. I’ve aggressively pushed the 10 bit footage and it really takes a lot for it to fall apart. I accidentally forgot to change back to D-log for my last video and all the pocket 3 shots were using the normal profile, some MotionVFX plugins and the colour wheels in FCP. Really pleased with how it looks!!!

  • @Hankster651
    @Hankster651 Před 5 měsíci +1

    When I use my DJI Action 4 it's definitely D-Log all the way, but with my Pocket 3 it's darn near perfect in the Normal color setting. I hate to admit it, but it's maybe BETTER than I could do if I shot it in D-Log and then color corrected.

    • @davidmuirphotography
      @davidmuirphotography  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I kinda feel the same Tim!!! It even has enough headroom to apply a LUT over the top without it looking terrible!!
      That said, I’ve tried a few DLOG clips recently and instead of using the DJI conversion LUT, I’ve just used the colour wheels in FCP to convert it myself and it looks a lot better!!!
      At least we have options!😁😁🥳🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

  • @twalker294

    The colors in normal mode are great for sure. But there is too much contrast and sharpening for my taste. If you want ease of use and aren't that concerned about getting the best quality out of the P3 then normal color is fine. But if you want to have as much control as possible, more latitude in editing, and the best final product (assuming you are familiar with editing and basic color correction,) then DLog is a must. Besides, applying the DJI rec709 LUT to your footage is trivially simple and should hardly be a reason not to shoot DLog.

    • @davidmuirphotography
      @davidmuirphotography  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hey!

Forgive the amateur production, but I am pretty amateur. There are a few parts shot with iPhone 14 Pro Max but the majority is shot with Pocket 3 in D-Log and color graded in post in FCP.
