- The unfortunate reality in North America, is that our history is disappearing at a rate much faster than it is being preserved. I run into this reality everywhere I got in Canada, and things are not much different here in the USA. It really blows me away, because our countries are so young. We have this beautiful opportunity to preserve the history of our countries, literally from their earliest years of settlement and expansion, but it is left to rot a fade away. In this video, I visit the amazing ruins of Rhyolite, a ghost town dating back more than a century. The history of this location is very interesting, because this is the most radical example of a "boom town". In 1904, there was nothing but vacant land here. By 1906, it was a large city with an incredibly advanced infrastructure, so much so that it even had its own stock exchange. What is most interesting though, is that by 1909, it was deserted.
Time has not been kind to this location, and there is little left of the old city. Most of the wood was salvaged to aid in the expansion of growing cities near by, such as Beatty and Las Vegas. What was built of stone has lasted much longer, but left to the elements it is slowly crumbling back to its original state on the ground.
I had a great chat with the caretaker Carl, but I really wanted to get out into the mountains and see some of the lesser explored areas. I hopped on the e-bike, and chose a path into the desert. Exploring in Canada, it is actually pretty common to discover a location that has not been seen by a human in a century, but here in the USA it is not the same. With the population density being so much higher, it is nearly impossible to find a place untouched, but I sure did find some neat things to see.
My first adventure in the mountains was into an old mine shaft. This isn't anything new for me or for the viewers of this channel, but what was inside is definitely different. As soon as you enter the shaft, you will notice the temperature climb drastically. The further I went into the mountain, the hotter and more humid it became. I thought for sure I would find a hot spring or something unexpected in there, but strangely enough, nothing. I went to the end of every branch of that mine shaft, and it was just a regular old mine shaft. I would have to guess that the shafts here in the desert are just hot like that from the sun, but exploring into other shafts later in the day, I did not find the same result.
I took the bike way out into the desert and away from the city, hoping to find an area a little less traveled. I definitely found some good hidden spots, but once again there were signs of recent visitors, but this time I found something I would never have expected. I found another mine shaft, but upon entering I could see a couch style chair. Further into the shaft, I discovered a bag full of pre rolled joints. Clearly I stumbled onto someones secret little hideaway.
Things sure are different here than they are back home, but as long as I get back to the MoHo safe and sound, it is always a good adventure.
Rhyolite was a total unexpected and unplanned stop for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

“And twice a week I’m the town drunk.” 😂
Dude, I love Carl. I could talk to him all day. As a former park ranger myself, I definitely recognize the ways he put his story together. It was awesome
On 5/28/77 this Beech C-45G N6065V crashed after having suffered a complete failure of the number one engine while landing causing a forced off airport landing ending with a collision with a pole and wires. The C-45 was on a flight from Davis, California to Beatty, Nevada.
I stopped by and checked out only the wrecked airplane too. Here is the story of what happened.
Rumor has it that Fran’s Star Ranch thought it would be a good idea to run a promotion to generate business for the brothel. They came up with the idea of having a parachute jumping contest. The rules were fairly simple, if you could jump out of the plane and land on a mattress that sat atop a large painted star located on the property, you could spend one full evening with a lady of your choice.
The contest went to shit after the pilot of the Beechcraft C-45 became distracted by the girls standing outside, clipped a pole on the landing strip and crash landed where it still sits today.
What a crazy interesting story! Thanks for sharing.
Have to admit, I am claustrophobic and so, whenever you go underground I get a little panicy. I know in my heart you make it out, but my fear mounts for you each time I watch. Please take care of yourself whenever you do go underground alone...your fellow WL Canadian..
Preach. You know he gets out but dayum...
Even though we know he gets out safely. L.S. can still tell him to be careful. Because I was thinking the same thing.
The second I saw the chair in the mine opening, I knew what it was for! Zen spot.
Hey mate.
I love how you not only find amazing destinations, but amazing characters. You have a gift for this. These stories are my favourite. Digging up these wonderful storytellers, who are part of the landscape/destination.
Keep it up, I always look forward to your next video. You inspire me to get back out there myself.
Cheers,
Rob, Tasmania, Australia 🇦🇺
Best start to a video EVER!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you. This one cracks me up still each time is watch hahahaha
Terrific interview with Karl, two thumbs up. Curious about the battery Burro, maybe do an update side video? Income tax season has me thinking about getting one.
There is a rebate/tax credit for e - bikes. I built my own on an existing bike I have.Don't bother with less than 1ooo watts and 48 volts. Mine does 43 mph and about 40- 50 miles range. And I'm upgrading... It ain't no Toy!
congrats on the 100K Dustin! good on you brother!
Thank you
Wow. What a wonderful way to start Our Day. Thanks Dustin....
OMG you made my year. I was there in 87 and spent a week. At that time the hotel still had red velvet drapes hanging and tattered from the wind. You could hear the wind whine as it made its way thru the glassless window frames. I was parked by the old jail. And to visit the rail road stop there it was like stepping into another world. Thank you so much you brought back a lot of memories . you do need to see Cerro Gordo and Bodie thank you Dustin good job p.s. rattlesnakes like to wrap around the sagebrush underneath.
I lived in Tonopah, 100 miles north of Rhyolite, for 15 months when I was 8-9 years old back in 1957-58.
Humidity in the desert! Truly rare. Gramma Candy
Wow, sounds like you & Carl have things in common. It was great listening to him & how important it is for people to leave things where they are. Unfortunately there's too many people that just don't care about our history. I wish there were enough people and money to help preserve these places! Another awesome video! Thank you for your hard work. I'm sure it's not always easy finding people around who know the history of these places you go to. Can't wait to watch the next one!
Thank you Carl! Another great historical lesson Dustin.
Carl’s take on context was so beautifully articulated.
excellent...thu it had me at 'twice a week I am the town drunk'
There are a lot of hot springs in Nevada. Must be some fumerals seeping through cracks into that mine, or else it would be regular ground temperature. Be careful in there. Some geothermal vents and hot springs emit a lot of Co2. Those pin heads are probably spun glass. Excellent video. Good interview too.
Carbon monoxide is the killer tasteless odorless kills in seconds, Should have a monitor for checking air quality
Dustination Adventure
I love your humor !!
Wow what a wonderful life you lead Dustin!! I loved the ruins of America's 'Rome' and Karl was obviously passionate about the history of the place and he was right to say that everything (old cans etc) should be left in situ for everyone to see. Thanx for a great explore. Gill 🇬🇧
Always love the videos with interviews. You, sir, make some seriously fantastic content.
Haha wow that was a crazy cool chill pad complete with folding loveseat and pre rolled joints. Lmao. That can was an old Hills Bros coffee can. Great vid. Can't wait for the next one. 🍻
Lets preserve "America's Rome". I agree with the man speaking. Very good conversation with Carl. Thank you for taking me here. I remember my visit there very well.
Still laughing about the "Battery Burro". Thumbs up.
Great interview. #destinationadventure
I watched it three Times
Great stuff! Loved all of it. Carl was a great storyteller who really drew us in. Your exploring and adventure were well told - and the humour was on point. Thank you for creating this and other videos - it is greatly appreciated! Keep smiling and safe adventures!
Leave it to you Captain D, to find a plane wreck..
Great video.. Thanks for bringing us along. 🤣
First, I love the intro, made me laugh pretty hard! Second, the interview with Karl and exploring the old town was really cool. I had no idea it existed. Desert explores are one of my favorites! Thanks for sharing and well done as always!
Great Video, editing, story, music all fantastic. Love the caretaker Carl Olsen, they don't get much more honest then that! Also loved that he stated things need to stay there! If taken, history will die away as well. Thank you for your adventure and documenting history along the way!
I absolutely love this channel. Stumble upon it and have to say I'm absolutely hooked. I love your Passion and the history that you teach with every exploration. Just truly awesome. Keep up the amazing work. Hope you someday can make it up to the Buffalo and Niagara Falls area out here on the East Coast. Lots of really cool explorations out here
another cool adventure STILL SNOWING UP HERE IN b,C canada love the video
Never change. Your intros are legendary, and I enjoy watching rediscovery. Have a good time out there
Carl was awesome! That old west history is one of my favorites to learn about. I feel like a lot of it is getting lost and not enough is recorded.
You need to catch up with Wonderhussy in Nevada . You both love adventure and maybe you could do a CZcams adventure together
BATTERY BURRO!!!
I LOVE IT!
Beats E-Donk every day!
Thanks for another sweet adventure... even if it meant descending to the magma beneath Earth's surface!
FarmerMJ
Sooooooo, you found my chairs. I never for the life of me, or my wife thought you would or anyone would. Long story short, in 2019 rolled my ankle on the way in for four day hike. Bad enough we left that and some other camping equipment there and hiked out the next morn and called it done. Four days turned into 30 hours, ankle surgery, six weeks off work, and its still mess ed up to this day. Full disclosure, we do not smoke weed (airline pilot and not one likes us on drugs). Those where not there when we left the chair, stove, tent, coffee pot and coffee. So other have been there since. Glad the chairs is there to this day. Was a fight to take it. I did not want to and the wife did. I had to carry it. When I rolled the ankle she did not want to take it out. Go figure. Either way, glad to see its still there and people are……..relaxing with it. PS, never saw any snakes or scorpions. Actually we never even saw much of anything alive. But what a place.
That intro skit had me rolling lol love it. Great episode.
That intro lol, what was i thinking, sry Dustin my mind was in the gutter
That was a awesome journey ❤️❤️❤️
Amazing. Wow. Gold fever.
I believe it said "Hills Bros" on the can and I think I saw "vacuum packed". If so, then it held coffee. I've been to Rhyolite many times. A 1970's visit found a museum and an active bar in the old train depot.
Another awesome video awesome history
Just so u know, ur vids r definitely enjoyable, and interesting, where as it's definitely appreciable when they r longer ones. So let's whip it, Justin. 👍
So cool when you get to meet and interview all these interesting people, love it!
Where have you been
Miss you man
Thank you for another great adventure. Enjoyed the interview and scenery.
Loved the interview with Carl. It's the history behind some of your video locations that just suck me right in. And your intro just about had me choking on strawberry lemonade in hysterical laughter. LOVED IT!
Another great little documentary. The amount of effort and creativity required always wows me. Was thinking of work by Ken Burns while watching. You have a way of telling a story that pulls the viewer in. And speaking of pulling you in: what did we say about being pulled down the rabbit hole to portals for another dimension? They are even using comfy chairs and pot now! Caution young Skywalker!
Oh man I wish we could allocate money towards preserving America’s history!😭
"Twice a Week I'm the town drunk" This made laugh so much, I love it.
Love the interviews you have with others sharing such great stories!
Old hills bros red brand coffee can
Thanks man, pretty freaking interesting.
Central California Watching
great stuff thanks
That was such a great conversation with Carl. :o) What a great piece of history. Thanks for the tour and please stay safe :o)
Carl is a bright, insightful lovely gentleman. Good Video!
Awesome video !! Thank you.
Folks often make a big deal over cut nails and round nails, but there was good 40 year period in the late 1800s where production of both overlapped. Cut nails are still being made and sold today. They work a lot better when working with native hardwoods.
You find the most amazing things!
Walking history books.
Great vid!! Can’t wait to see where you go next
The plane was owned by the brothel and used for promotions. You could go sky diving there and if you landed on a mattress they had outside of the brothel you would get a free date with a lady lol. The plane still sits where it crashed.
Do you know why it crashed and when? So interesting to just see it in the flat desert.
I subscribe to a lot of channels but your uploads are the ones I really get pumped about. Your content just keeps getting better and better. Keep up the good work. You’re not missing anything back here in BC.
Rhyolite is less than four hours from where I live, definitely want to check it out. Dustin, you are brave to go in those mines, I’m holding my breathe watching you! Be safe out there! ❤️❤️
Awesome content man! I just started my channel and I love watching your videos!
The needles were cool. I was just gifted some. They ARE glass tops.. Sometimes called pins, sometimes hat pins. I was able remove the rust from mine. Sliced a potato in half, added some liquid dish detergent to the slice of potato and stabbed away! Rinsed and good as new!
Did you hear anything about why the mine shaft was so hot? Really has me wondering
It was either Radon or radiation.
Dustin be careful when you go in mines like that. It can be lethal to breathe some of that air.
Such a cool explore! You are fearless 😳😳
CZcams won't let me "Like" this video.
Way to go bro! Absolutely love your channel. My family owned an RV dealership in Kitchener Ontario, call Campers World.
I always wanted to do what you are doing .
Keep truckin' bro!
The first couple minutes were absolutely hilarious! Loving this whole series of videos!
Carl's version of being the town drunk obviously is just having one beer twice a week because his mind is very sharp.
very well done my friend
As soon as I saw that comfy chair I thought "I bet that's someone's chilling out spot." Great video, D - your sunny desert explorations are a nice treat compared to grey and damp SWBC
This one is setting off my claustrophobia alarm! lol... Brave soul, sir!
Good video , as usual , thanks !!!!
Loved listening to Karl and totally agree with him. Leave it as you found it. Great tour and history of the town and mines.
Well done Dustin1 I explored this place [and most of Death Valley] in 2018, and i knew this particular place would be right in your travel theme. Very cool!!!
ohhhhmyyy GGAAAWWDDDD....i love it when u dork out like that ;)
I have been to Rhyolite. It was an interesting place to see.
Me too. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the weird art
Diane Cape Town. Love your rambles. Don't stop.
I keep checking for a video. I hope you are alright. I’m looking forward to your next adventure 😊
Very well done edition this week, thanks for all the work you put into these. My fat tire ebike got here last week and I'm set to hit the road in March in my 20 ft. RV, start making my own adventures.
Wow, fascinating. There is this channel Wonderhussy and she has covered a lot of the Nevada area, really into abandoned places out west and gives history finds hot springs and lives out of her SUV, but I’m surprised I can’t recall her being in that place. There’s another place out there where a guy, another youtuber, bought an old mining town and is renovating it hoping to draw attention to the history of that mining town turning it into place of interest. He has explored much of the mines. In fact there is an old elevator that still works taking him down various elevations.
Ghost town living is the guys channel. It’s of the Cerra Gordo mine. It’s in California. He would definitely be a great interview. Guy knows quite a bit of the mining history of that area.
Cerro Gordo , it's on the Cali side
Dustin Tried to stop at Cerro Gordo a few videos back, but couldn't get ahold of Brett, and since the road is 7 miles of steep windyness, He didn't want to try driving up there and just dropping in as he was afraid the MOHO couldn't make it.
I think he said he'd try at another time to contact/visit.
Wonderhussy actually lives in Vegas and just takes trips a week or 2 at a time. But she's got great vids out.
He annoyed me a teeny bit claiming it was "abondoned" i discovered a few weeks later on another CZcams channel he bought that from the previous owners who gave summer tours for the last 40 years! So not as "Abondoned" as he made out, Had electricity and water
Intro - You are so adorable!
WOW that was wayyy cool!! Wish I could do some exploring like that!! Thanks for showing us
Lot's of geothermal in that area, used to be a geothermal research facility outside of Jean back in the early 1980's. Another great video of my old stomping grounds from the late 70's early 80's...
What a rookie! I think you got the missile selector mixed up with the bomb selector! It's a good thing that you didn't hit the ejector button!!!😆
..and I am still so jealous of you!
Super cool video man.
Gotta say, I love this channel so much. Makes me want to get out there and explore stuff myself. Thanks you.
Dustin, Great video, your killin' it man! If you ever make it to Fairbanks, Alaska, look me up, I have some killer spots to explore...
Great video as always!!!
Cool video Dustin. 👍
Got to compliment you on your music selections
Happy New Year Dustin . Congrats on the 100,000 Subs . I ordered a T-shirt. Tks for the Great Vids . From Rob n Tracy on Van Isle . Stay Safe !
Rhyolite is very cool. I once bought a copy of the Bonanza TV show map (my last name is Cartwright) from the old guy at the little museum. Another time, I metal detected a WW1 army uniform button near the top of the hill that's halfway between Rhyolite and Beatty. It's hard detecting anywhere in that desert. You'll swear you're up some ravine where no human has ever trod... only to to find 8,000,000 .22 bullets, half of a 1978 Chevy truck, and a limited-edition sugar cookie tin from last year.
Love the channel bro and the adventures are awesome 🔥👊 congratulations 100k well deserved 👍
Must of been a plane full of drunken sailors that saw the Brothel sign from the air and said crash the plane there. Lol. Great vid Dustin, keep em' coming, love your comedy humor and commentary.
That's my old backyard man! I grew up in Beatty. My dad still volunteers out there at the visitors center for the outdoor art. I spent a lot of my childhood hiking those mountains. So many amazing things to see there. Glad you made the trip. If you ever go back stop in and talk to my dad. He can point you to more cool stuff.
