  • History in Mexico dates back centuries, but to find it and learn about it first hand is an amazing experience. In the past several videos, I have come across a stone aquaduct running parallel to the spring in San Ignacio. I really wanted to learn more of the history of this location, and I knew that knowledge could be found by pursuing the history of the Mission. Jane was a wealth of knowledge, and a delight to interview. She told me the history of not only the mission, but of much of the peninsula.
Leaving San Ignacio, I had little plan outside of just "south" and the road took me to the Bay of Conception, which most certainly the most beautiful location thus far in the Baja. I decided to stop and get the boat on the water, and I was blessed with some UNBELIEVABLE weather and some mirror finish water. Another consistent surprise in the bay, was dolphins, eager to play with the boat. It didn't take me long to meet some locals and get a lead on a shipwreck and the remains of an old German ghost town about 14 miles away. The shipwreck was a great place to do some diving and spearfishing, and I finally was able to spear my first fish. This was truly a wonderful experience for me.
Finally, I had a day with a really good wind report, so I was up early and on the water to find the ghost town. This was my first open ocean adventure in months, and I had my concerns for sure, but the weather was perfect all day and we found the town location with little issue. The remains of this town are quite remarkable, and the stone work was amazing to walk around and look at. It always blows me away finding a location that was once so prevalent, and now hardly known about at all.
Leaving the old town, I wanted to try my luck at some fishing, and finally I had a pretty lucky day. I got into several Grouper and Barracuda, but nothing worth keeping. All in all, this was a really fun adventure, and I truly hope you all will enjoy it as well.

Those are the ruins of the Gavilan Magnanese Mines, Dustin. The old water tank at the top of the hill says 1943. More than 6,000 people worked there. They provided manganese to the alied forces in WW2. Closed when a hurricane devastated the area, 1946.

Your wonderful talents as a videographer and story teller come alive when you are telling the stories of others. As much fun as it was to watch you on your first spear fishing endeavor (the crystal clear water was amazing!), I was enthralled with the story of the stone mission in San Ignacio, especially as told by your local historian. Another thoroughly enjoyable chapter in the telling of your journey. Thank you!

Dustin, love watching your adventures. I see that you flush out the engine with fresh water, that's a good method. I was wondering if you rinse off your boat and gear before heading out on different bodies of water? So many invasive species get transferred from one body to another when people don't rinse their gear and boats. It's a big problem hear in NC.

Great Video Dustin. This one was "jam-packed" and fabulous to watch. Just a reminder that when you see an old Mine / Mill /Concentrator area, the big piles of "fist" size or smaller rocks (sometimes they are like mountains) are usually waste rock piles => not Tailings. Tailings are typically like beach sand (and smaller) which is the residual after the valuable minerals are removed from the Ore. I'm really enjoying your adventures. Are you going down to the end of the Baja Peninsula to Cabo San Lucas before you turn north again ? Keep on Trucking and Stay Safe!
