    And here I thought manual landing in X3TC was complicated. Until I tried to land my small starting ship in this game, rammed the hangar door twice, missed the pad four times, got shot to pieces for loitering, and finally smashed my ship into the landing strut with a accidental boost. Good times :)

      Playbahnosh Yea I'm having trouble in some places others I have no trouble. I think it might be my facing I'll try that. I had no trouble with the training docking this is like my 10th dock in game. Well just tried again logged out and retried and got it my first time, maybe it's a issue in game. Oh and I loved docking in x2.

      @exodore2000 Před 5 lety

      @@ozstockman yea that rotation can be a killer. Have you tried docking in a damaged station? I've gotten better but still run into issues with larger or "wonky" ships.

      @ozstockman Před 5 lety +2

      @@exodore2000 I have decided not to play a real game until I can enter a station with my eyes almost closed. Docking I have mastered to some degree but entering is harder. I know it is going to be harder in real game so if you can do an easy one with no ships and debris I do not see any point to start playing. I am just practising when I have some free time. Since docking is easier for me now after doing it 20-30 times or more I just do that training for practising entering, them do a bit of combat training. I will get to the real game but so far I do not think I am ready.

    Just a note: In order to dock, the front of your ship must be facing the tower (the collection of buildings). If you're facing the angled retractable ramp, you're backwards and are not going to be able to dock.

    Tip for noobs: Don't retract landing gear until you have exited the station. This keeps your speed down and disables boost (as a misplaced boost will end your trip real quick)

    • @Teknotion
      @Teknotion Před 9 lety +5

      Yeah, I thought that was bad advice given on the video. I've been playing for a long while now, and still keep my gear down until I get to the letterbox. It's far too easy to misjudge the gap and end up redecorating the station wall at high speed.
      It's not much of an issue in a stock Sidey or mid-spec Cobra, but when you're looking at a multi-million credit insurance bill for your A-rated Asp, you tend to try to be a little more careful in docking areas.

      Teknotion Upward thrust(use x/z thrust to align), disable gear, keep reticle on center(use the upper and lower parts of the entrance to judge if you are center), crank on the throttle. I've been playing a week and i can nail coming into(and exiting) stations at max speed in the cobra. It's honestly not that hard with a bit of practice(just playing) and it'll be important for you to do this if you want to handle stolen or illegal goods, to avoid the scan you typically get on your way into a station.

    If you've ever jumped out of Supercruise at a station and found yourself at the wrong end, here's a handy tip.
    Note the 3D graphic of the station on the bottom-left of your screen. It's not just for show. That graphic shows which way the station will be oriented (relative to you) when you jump out of Supercruise. So you want to jump out of Supercruise with the docking slot facing directly towards you. When you approach the station in Supercruise, instead of heading directly for it, approach it off-center until the station is rotated around so the docking slot is aimed at your ship.
    For example, if the docking slot on the station is currently facing right, then start passing the station on the right until the last moment. Then when you swing around to face it, the docking slot will be directly ahead.

    When docking at the big stations, the audio cues from the station's traffic controller can help you pinpoint the location of your landing pad before you get inside. If he says, "3,000 meters from touchdown" just as you're passing through the gate, your landing pad is at the back wall of the station.

    I appreciate this is essentially a hardcore sim, and someone like me, who's never played a PC flying/sailing/yodelling/whatever simulation, is going to find it a steep climb to acclimatise, esp. since I'm playing the XB version which has less attention paid to it...neverthfuckingless, I have never played anything, in my twenty-seven year history of videogaming, that is anywhere near as obtuse as Elite on XB. I expected, and am fine with, complex, demanding, etc. - that's what I wanted TBH. What I'm NOT so fine with is when entire, crucial game mechanics and control systems go completely unmentioned even in the training sections. I really shouldn't have to trawl YT just in order to find out how to ask for permission to dock for example...the training mission asks you to do it but then can't be bothered to tell you how to! How much effort would it take to consistently display the controls on screen?
    I could go on, as there are a lot more examples of this throughout - I've barely left the training missions(the bits that are meant to SHOW YOU HOW TO PLAY) and I've had to go quite deep online to finish more than one of them.
    Don't get me wrong...everything I've done with my ship has been absolutely exhilarating; the game just feels right; but when you have to watch a tutorial in order to complete a tutorial I think it's fair to say that the devs haven't done enough(in fact they haven't even done the bare minimum) to help acclimatise newcomers to the game's mechanics. It's been years since E:D was released, and it's had a lot of iterative love and attention to dramatically broaden its horizons, but it remains almost intentionally opaque to newcomers. Considering how satisfying it is to actually play, and how many newbs are thirsting for a game like this(eg. see the hype surrounding NMS), it seems crazy to make it so inaccessible.

    • @lonewarrior250
      @lonewarrior250 Před 7 lety +4

      I'm use to playing simulators, I played MSFS for decades, until they stopped making them. Learning to play this game is like trying to figure out how to fly a plane with no flight manual or instructions. The tutorials are about as useful as calling AT&T for customer service. They mention a few keybinds to help you in some instances, but outside of that they don't tell you squat, for instance. I absolutely could not figure out how to make a docking request. I banged around on the keyboard until eventually the menu popped up on the side, then I banged around even more until I figured out how to change menu tabs, then I bumbled around on the keyboard more to try and figure out how to actually select the contact to dock, but then there was no contact options. I banged half of the keys on my keyboard and nothing.
      Whoever came up with the training portion in this game has the intuition of a rock. If I was going to develop a complex system I would damn sure find a way to communicate how it all works in exact detail, not leave people hanging on little to nothing. Very disappointed with this game and I haven't even gotten to the main part of it.

    • @ImagineMedia
      @ImagineMedia Před 7 lety

      regardless If you missed the instruction or not it should not be so complicated. There should be a running history of every prompt but there isn't. And I've noticed if you don't do everything specifically in (other than actual docking) an arbitrary set amount of time they don't tell you about and if you miss it you've broke the game and have to restart the training.

They layout of the docking request screen has changed a bit, making it simpler. To be sure you are docking in the right direction, look at your ship hologram - it should show your ship facing away, not toward you.

I changed the X axis on the mouse to yaw instead of pitch and made so the mouse controlled the ships rotation : Left mouse button pitch left right mouse button pitch right, mouse wheel forward pitch forward mouse backward pitch backward. Then I made so the arrow keys control the maneuvering thrusters. I kept the "W" and "S" the same for speeding up and slowing down and kept the "X" as the break. I changed the "Caps lock" for forward and "Left shift" for reverse.
    Now instead of crashing into the station or my docking permit timing out trying to maneuver into the entrance of the space station I finally managed to dock, but my Sidewinder will need a new paint job.

      I do. I'd just like it if the game showed you how to.
      I completely agree with most of what you've written - I've no problem w/ 'hard' or 'complex'(this is a game about flying a spaceship after all). What I do have a problem with is when entire gameplay mechanics and the controls required to use them are left out of the game's help and tutorial systems.
      Small example - nowhere in the game does it tell you how to request docking permission. Not even in the official tutorial video online. So I had to watch one redundant online tutorial vid and then trawl a few message boards before I could even get partway through a TUTORIAL mission. That's not 'complex', or 'demanding' - that's laziness on Frontier's part, and it's inexplicable when the rest of the game is so exquisitely designed.
      To reiterate - I certainly don't want the game to be less complex...I could've bought NMS a few days ago but the simplicity of the mechanics seemed offputting. Instead I bought the XB version of E:D, as I'd had an eye on it for a long time anyway(I was waiting for the Horizons expansion). This is my kind of game. But there's nothing stopping Frontier from making it much less pointlessly inaccessible, nor is there anything admirable in forcing a new player to repeatedly google the controls just so that they can complete a fucking tutorial. Perhaps this is more of a problem for the XB version, IDK, but either way there's no excuse.

    If it is an official training it sucks. You need to explain beginners how to align a ship with an entrance hole as it is the most difficult part considering people overshoot and stations are rotating. Especially when you cannot see it at all. Docking is much easier than entering a station as long as you use all ship movements along with a vertical control. You really need to improve all training sessions here and in the game. I can imagine how many people just have given up on your game because they thought it is difficult. I am just a stubborn and I kept practising until I learnt(myself by the way with no help from you) how to find an entrance and dock. I do usually request docking after I get inside. I guess it is not going to work in a real game for some stations but at least for training it works.

      If you mean to request docking you need to go into Contacts tab with pressing L1 on PS4 controller. And for basic training you can request docking after you enter a station. At least this way you will have plenty of time to dock. I do not think it will work inside a real game with most stations. They have challenging scenarios for training and there is docking one. the station in that scenario won't issue a grant for docking if you ask for it inside the station. I once tried and failed. Exited the station and requested again and they did not let me do it at all no matter how many times I asked. Decided to have fun with shooting at the station and they killed my ship in seconds. So next time I started that scenario I sent request before entering and it was granted.

The reason I suspect he doesn't mention specific keys is that there are SO MANY controls for this game that mentioning something as simple as UI controls isn't going to be as helpful as looking up the full control layout. • @Bangcat
      @Bangcat Před 8 lety

      Yeah, turns out I landed backwards, though nothing I could ever recall said I couldn't land backwards. There's not exactly a lock mechanism that visually depicts you need to go down in a particular way and it's on a spinning mechanism for the landing pad anyway. Why they would demand a landing direction front or back just feels un expected. I'd understand it a bit more for the internal stations as you come in a certain way anyhow, but certainly not the starting station that's open and exposed.
      However we're talking about a game that's left out a lot of things in fine detail, among other things left out. Like the fact the training system from the launcher was apparently not updated since it's earliest of days. I found out I should've just used said training missions from the ACTUAL game launch. Another fine point I wasn't made privy too till after I spoke to another friend who learned it from another player.
      There are some things the game is a marvel in, and it indeed floats the imagination in wondrous ways when you get to traveling around, but there's a lot of things that deserve mentioning, and through expectation of such a tittle, should really be detailed. A better explanation including that landing is a direction specific venture being one of just the many that float un explained in detail. Granted they wanted the game to be a bit cumbersome in the ideal that you control all these various things, and many things can wind up in disaster, but I think if I kept trying to grind my belly on a pad in reverse, and that was simply not going to work, I think someone in the station would say something, or at least some kind of flight instructor in training would've made it very clear earlier on I was doing it wrong.
      The landing gear not being out was a warning I got only a much further down the line landing where it did promptly alert me, and I put the gear out and landed with no incident.
      I'm compelled to try more, but through my time I think I've found why so many people have so many hours logged on the game but still have the occasional yet signficant nay sayers view.
      There are things that blatantly should've been updated or dealt with, and still they moved out a new project half finished with not much to warrent it's existance, and even made people pay for some elements twice. Something that questionably thus further should be a lot cheaper in cost than it is. There is indeed that captivating factor as you look about space as you slowly drift over stations and slip in through nitches for docking, and the experience of dropping out of warp and seeing a ship come up to you blatantly checking you out like a random fish then moving on, says something for the AI as I found myself wondering if it would attack, hail, and then before I could communicate move on like the veteran space fairer it was meant to be. I even questioned if it was another player, but I was in a private group game with no one else on from what I could tell.
      But certainly there is the other factor. Many people have their STEAM client continue to count hours as the game has been closed, YES the LAUNCHER is also CLOSED, yet the game doesn't seem to be good at making the Steam client realize it's indeed shut down. As such until you restart steam, that clock is counting, and as such it thinks I've been playing it for 48 hours straight despite properly closing out the game and said launcher. And within that feels a kind of representation that's a little less than true. However I'm sure m any have indeed been playing the game a very long time because it is, it's captivating in it's own right, but much of those captivation come in the ideals of ventures to come, and what could be, and I hear many of those currently in the form of horizons has really not come to the level expected. Or perhaps they finally just had their fill of space without much new.
      Either way, I suspect I'll be playing again. But the learning curve will throw many off, and then it comes questionable how much of that learning curve was really necessary, and how much of it was warranted, and then if it really paid off. As such that question indeed has locked me in to find out more.

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 Před 7 lety

      @Bangcat Před 7 lety

      The Sprawl Yeah, some of the stuff in the game is fun, but a lot of it needs better explaining, maybe even a bit more on how to be competent if they're really going to screw you on something as simple as which way you landed, yet not mention that mattered.
      Over all I'm just not sure the reward of the experience really stacks up to the effort. Maybe someone can show me more videos of things that really make the game all the more awesome and thus worth it, but I'm kinda not seeing it.
      I've moved on, but will keep an open mind given better evidence.

    More difficult that it needs to be detracts from realism. I can't fathom of a control tower in their right mind allowing any hotshot pilot to MANUALLY land on a space station. 4:33 no amount of training can help you on entering station and landing pad, even if you do it 100 time.

    I once pranked a friend who plays this game by rebinding the speed boost command to the button he usually uses for his landing gear. His Viper smashed into a wall inside of a space station, he died, and he lost 75,000 CR of bounty vouchers.

    The worst part of docking is accidentally boosting when you meant to deploy the landing gear.

      please read it again - i could not get the option TO dock at all i.e i couldnt get into the dock station let alone to land and dock. This error only existed in the training part, when i played a game it worked just fine.

      +John Daniels Oddly that doesn't work for me... maybe because I'm using a 360 controller. I have to get to the menus through the controller.

    Seems there's a lot of "press a key for UI focus, press a key for left panel"... Why not just have a single key press for left and right panels?

      You can set a button for it

      You can also just look at the panel. No need for focus buttons.

      ENAK Well the UI Focus pannel allow me for instance to only use one button on my controller + the hat in one of the 4 directions to select a specific pannel : left(target/navigation,missions) right(status/modules/firegroups/functions) up(communication) down(zoom on the scanner). Just have to Hold it, select the interface i want and stop holding it. If i just press it it brings me back to front view again.Instead of 4 buttons, 1 for each, and maybe 1 to get back to the front view. guess which one is more practical.
      Of course the other way is to use the head look, but it's not as efficient.

      Actually it is better to have separate buttons. It is too much at first but later it becomes normal. You feel it natural because panels do very different things.

      well i dont have enough buttons on my controller for that and that UIPFocus is really not a problem, you quickly get use to it, and it feels natural to me. i already know what's on the left pannel, right pannel or comm pannel. Once you're familiar with he UI you can do things very quickly. Now if you're using a computer well maybe yes you'd better use 1 key for each.
