I really like playing the tutorials in this game. It really is a priceless experience when you casually try out what button does what and then you hit tab which is followed by an intense "BWOOOOOOSH" sound which in turn is followed by you going "OH GOD WHATDIDIDO WHATDIDIDO"
ik i pressed it acedently once before i rebined the controls on my keyboard so it was not so ridiculous and i crashed into the star port
Every. Time.
I have a new HOTAS system, and barely know where the buttons physically are. For functions I don't use all the time, I have no idea what they are mapped to most of the time! So I'll try the tutorials.
Oh okay, so on Keyboard, use the ARROW KEYS to divert power from system to system (Right = Weapons systems).
I recommend (for the 2nd training mission) to divert all power to Weapons, and stand still (press X to automatically make speed to 0) and keep firing. When he fires back use either F or R to move DOWNWARDS OR UPWARDS respectively.
I hope this helps. I seriously think we need to flat out state keyboard commands in the comments section, even if they are obvious
THANK YOU
What the other guy said, THANK YOU! It doesn't tell me the keys for power transfer anywhere, it's been driving me mad.
Magic Better get a controller for this game. Works way better.
You can still use the mouse and keyboard in menus.
I felt like a hopeless idiot on the supply ambush training mission, but this helped me maneuver properly. Hit-n-run tactics worked wonders.
Without these ED tutorials I would be totally lost. Without a doubt this is the largest and most frustrating learning curve I have yet to experience in a PC game.I spent all day yesterday learning from the tutorials, and I will spend many more hours learning until I get it right. I will not be defeated.
This is awesome and well-timed. I just recorded an awesome dogfight between me and a few higher ranked pilots. Such an awesome experience when you finally take down someone you've spent the last 5 minutes chasing and shooting at. Only got 6k credits from the guy, but the experience was worth it. You guys can see it if you like, or you don't have to. I just wanted to share my experience as I was in awe the whole time, with my heart pounding!
Great game so far, Frontier! Really can't wait to see what kind of future this game has!
ED is the best looking sci game I've seen with the best flight mechanic. Bravo FDEV.
***** Agreed. When I first flew the tutorials in the asteroid field I was blown away. OMG
Have to agree. This is the most satisfying space combat I've played. Will have to start practicing with flight assist off as well to pull off some of those fancy manoevers.
Big tip for newbies: Play the tutorials at least once the most important thing is to dial in the controls to your liking since you need to be able to handle the ship competently. I turned the mouse to yaw rather than roll and handled roll with Q/E (although it's actually Del/pgdn for me because I am a leftie) I then made sure I had lateral thrusters bound so I can fully utilize them. This will be important for the docking as well since thrusting downwards is how you ideally want to land and the laterals will help you tune the ship's position for a landing as well as giving you an extra bit of wiggle in a dog fight.
So yeah do the blow up junk course and docking courses, I'd recommend blowing up junk first because it doesn't move and you can play with the basic controls until they work correctly. Then I went to docking/landing because it demands navigation controls are setup properly to land and it helped me figure out the mouse was rolling rather than yawing since you want to orient yourself to the opening. When you do all of the basic tutorials you will learn most everything you need to know to pilot the ship. There are a few harder tutorials that it looks like you can skip if you don't want to do them because they are just more difficult combat training scenarios, but I'd recommend doing the first two probably first three combat scenarios.
Blow up junk, blow up an inferior ship and blow up two ships.
Flying the sidewinder in the practice missions feel great. Can't wait until I feel comfortable enough to start playing around with flight assist off.
just picked this up, got my ass kicked in the basic combat tutorial, the enemy stayed behind me the whole time...
the conflict zone in the newbie area is insanely unfair, that's where I got destroyed
An excellent tutorial, very thorough & coherent. I look forward to one of similarly high quality for Flight Assist Off, which I've been finding extremely difficult to get to grips with.
*All hail the Emperor, let us bask in his glory!*
As an old Elite player on the BBC Master and later on the C64 I'm proud to have my new x-mas present: Elite Dangerous.. Cya all in space :-)
Just got the game, had no clue what to do, played 2 of the tutorials, watched this video and another and I believe I know a fair portion of what I need to start playing the game. I don't know why people QQ this much.
Even in the year 3300 we still need youtube
I was feeling like a total moron until I watched this video. It made all the difference between me never getting on target, and smoking the enemies in the first skirmish mission without getting hit once.
Love that this game natively supports my X52 as well!
+Darr HuD I couldn't imagine playing this without my x52. Native support for the keymapping is simply awesome.
+Raize3022 No effing joke. This game is amazing with the HOTAS, and having my x52 natively supported is just that much more awesome. Nearly a thousand hours later, and my biggest complaint so far is that my x52 is in need of replacing and saitek hasn't released a new controller in ages.
Now, back to the grind for elite. Sitting at Tycoon in my Imperial Cutter, hoping my x52 doesn't wear out before that. (it was already quite old when I got elite)
It's alwayx good to have something special in your back pocket and this looks like the perfect thing for an independent trader like myself!
Nicely done! This'll be handy.
Nice tutorial. I was Elite millionaire twice on BBC 'B'. Years later and with flight controller, time to start again. The big difference ? No school to get up for.
WHY ISN'T THIS THE FIRST THING WE SEE IN COMBAT TRAINING?!?!?! I LEARNED MORE IN THIS VIDEO THAN 3 HOURS OF FAILING THE TUTORIAL.
Please tell us the default keyboard mappings to perform the actions you are describing.
Enjoyed this- Thanks!
Something that used to work in Elite Frontier (especially if you had a large ship with a slow turn rate) was to switch off the engines and rotate the ship on thrusters
Excellent vid, keep em coming. Just got to play via the gamma release. Learning everything by trial and error is a tad slow and I'd like to be up to speed come Dec16th.
Handy vid! I will definately link it to the dutch tweakers forum! Nice one.
Nice tutorial! Keep 'em comming!
Momentarily disabling flight assist when turning comes in pretty handy too!
siliconstate that is what i was thinking too.
Good no nonsense video just what we all want :)
Super helpfup, thanks!!
Can't wait!
Very useful Tutorial, thanks :)
@InquisitorM
Rate of yaw in this clip is spot on. I get the same through a 360 controller or joystick. Double check your setup.
Good concise tutorial.
Hey, will you guys post dev diaries when you start on the Planetary Landing Expansion? I'd really love to see progress on that, as I'm super excited for when that expansion comes out. Can't wait to pre-order the current build!!
My brother has been playing this for a while looking forward to the final version
Good, educational video. Please let us have more of such "How To" videos. I can't find these info. in the Beta.
I highly recommend everyone new do the very first combat tutorial JUST to figure out your control scheme because you'll need to dial that in to make it work for you. Then you should either do the docking tutorials/travel or go to the second combat tutorial to figure out more about shooting at things while moving. The third combat tutorial looks good to learn about how a dog fight feels and how to fight against a target that will actually give you resistance (which you may actually need). Once you've done the docking, travel, and three combat tutorials you should be ready to roll. The rest are mainly just advanced combat stuff which is nice to do but you've learned what you pretty much needed to for flying the ship by then. It's all polish and improvement after that. If you want to go combat heavy then you should probably tool with them though, but you can always do tutorials later.
Oh, so many memories sparked! One question, will you be able to buy some kind of contact data cloak/disrupter?
Very useful information. Must see moooorree! :)
The app is looking good .... I'll be trying it when I get home!
This looks brilliant. Hope my PC is up to running it!
Dave Graham My computer only has 4 RAM, and it runs perfectly.
Oh, so that's what I was doing wrong.
I'm really used to Evochron's style, where Yaw is super sensitive, and thus, roll isn't essential Elite seems to put huge focus on roll and very little on yaw.
That and turning speed when you turn Flight Assist off to use newtonian physics to trick your opponent is HUGELY slower in ED.
This will take some getting used to.
awesome app, love to keep an eye on my progress!
this app looks great hope to put it to work soon
i am a Beta backer so i have played the current build of the game. And man its great.
I am glad to see you are making these tutorials Frontier. I hope you do more because some of those that are in the game are not explained very well in the current build (gamma 1.01). i.e. the tutorial on heart magement where you have to take out 3 federal fighters without a cobra mk III kills you. As of now its not being explained very well thus making it hard for new players to understand. I hope you read this and work on it some more.
I don't need a tutorial on heart management ... I'm already in love with ED :p
lol ups i meant heat management :D
Absolutly agree. I am beta backer, but tutorial mission "Predator and Prey" I finished with big luck maybe 1 times.
Silent Running and Heat management was during beta changed and this mission with my actual knowledge and skill is not finishable for me.
I tried many times with different strategies, but nothing work.
Newbies could be little bit confused.
I am looking for next tutorial videos with expectation.
In you're opinion beside using VoiceAttack what's the most precise Kb/M or Hotas or Dual Joystick?
I've got a lot of combat experience from other games, but man this one's hard as hell
Very helpful.
FINALLY GOT THIS ON THE MAC
It would have been helpful if you said what button to press to actually do the various tasks. It took forever to find which submenu the power divert controls are in. (unhelpfully, they are under "miscellaneous")
been in the game for good amount of time but i forgot how to scan, or how to choose second weapon group
Y'know what, for basic combat I find the use of reverse thrust and strafe controls to be essential, pity you guys didn't cover that.
What I often do if I can't outmanoeuvre my target or someone's on my six, I punch the reverse and make distance, while opening fire at him.
There's one thing that was not mentioned. You get a sound notification when you get a hit on your opponent. It makes it easier to get longer range hits.
Just one more trick for the beginners: try to always be behind your target.
He doesn't mention lateral thrusters for 6DOF just rotation, and the ships reverse in this game too. So this is a very basic tutorial which doesn't go beyond what you would expect from an airplane.
I just learned that this game is coming to Xbox One. I can't wait.
Enemy: You're not so tough!
(Not even 5 seconds later)
*dies*
"Different colours mean different things". Up until this point I didn't even know there were different colours. That might explain my difficulty in the group combat tutorials that come next.
How do I enable colourblind mode?
High production values for a basic tutorial. Well done, FD.
I suck horribly at combat in this. I'm going through the basic combat training mission, and I just cannot beat that second fighter. I get to a point where he's behind me, and no matter what I do, I can't get the bugger in front of me before he takes out my shields and, subsequently, me. Fortunately, I'm either a) stubborn, b) a masochist, or c) a combination of both. ;-)
at, 5.41 min. all I could hear (I'm an old guy) was, "select button bound") I know that 's wrong but what was the original oratory , if you wouldn't mind:)
Tell me how to do it when the scanner is full of salvage debris, the enemy gives me 15 seconds to even realize what is going on and then kills me in another 5 seconds before I even get him in my sights because he is always right behind me. The difference between this tutorial and in-game combat is like the difference between a shooting range and deployment into a war zone.
how do you actually divert power, they say divert power but they never give key bindings
might have been worth mentioning lateral thrust...
hardest part is find your target. took awhile and this tutorial to figure it out lol
how do i get the retail release? on steam or in stores?
"I can easily lock onto the target by using the bottom assigned (Select Target Ahead Button)". Thanks for the Information Frontier Development, can't wait for you'r next DLC Horizon. In which you explain what button you press to roll in money. But for some reason I assume that button's name will be "Cheap Development for $60"
Quick list of the types of controls you can use:
Keyboard
Keyboard and Mouse
Xbox Controller
Third Party Gamepad
Simple Joysticks
Advanced Joysticks
Those control pads that look like the wheel in an airplane
Probably a couple others, but my point is that if he listed them all, this video would take forever. Just do the flight check and find out what the buttons are yourself.
+flash09125 Why not look in the options and find out which button is set up? Just a hunch. They are not going to say the default because they know many might have changed I and will have any number of different control systems - they expect you to at least know how to open a fucking menu! It's not rocket science, mate. You've just bought a new car and you are asking people how to turn the pages in the manual, I think games beyond mine craft are not for you. I hear call of duty is pretty simple.
It would be nice if they added more of an in depth tutorial to this game. I got this and am utterly lost, the tutorials don't explain a lot and just leave you to your own devices really. I get that they're not trying to hold your hand, but when you have to enter a single player tutorial to figure out what's going on, this is exactly where some guidance should be given rather than just text menus.
Bought the game on sale and it's a nightmare. Can't complete the basic combat tutorial. The damn drone always escapes me and then you search for it for minutes while he's happily shooting your ship from behind. I've tried with keyboard and it's insanely hard. I also have a basic joystick with 7-8 keys. Will it be enough, or the developers assume I should have an advanced one with like 20 controls?
How the hell can you turn so fast? I am trying to play this game in the training missions and it takes like a full minute to do a 360 at any amount of thrust.
I would like to see videos with flight assist off.
There should never be deadlocked fights with feature used correctly.
Also, turn rate should not be impacted by forward momentum as you are not changing direction of flight.
Missing one feature though how to keep in contact with Archie the ships computer with this app ;-)
I have the same canons as in this tutorial. but the two little dots at the centre of the crosshair that seem to track on to the target in this tutorial video don't move in game for me... they just stay perfectly centred so I have to be stupidly accurate with my piloting. I can't even break the enemy's shield! I'm so confused!
+Brian L You have to lock your target for tracking.
Terrific. It's going to be a long "3" months to the Mac version. Hopefully less to the Mac Beta.
I cannot work out for the life of me how he's getting that much directional control. When I play the same tutorial, I can't get anything like the same rate of yaw.
2 joysticks
Are you in the throttle "blue zone"? Do you use the directional thrusters ?
More pips into engines gives you better turn rate in addition to a higher max speed. The closer you are to 50% throttle, the better turn rate you get, with the speed indicator turning blue at optimal thrust. Pitch is a lot faster than yaw, so rely heavily on pitch and roll, using yaw mostly for fine tuning. You can additionally use your lateral and vertical thrusters to adjust your relative turn rate. It just takes a lot of practice to get used to utilizing all these factors in the heat of combat, eventually it becomes second nature.
Are you using a joystick? Also, if you are using a joystick or analogue stick with an axis of any kind...MAKE SURE YOU BIND THE FLIGHT MANEUOVERING TO THE "AXIS" CONTROLS. NOT THE DIGITAL BUTTONS OF LEFT RIGHT, UP AND DOWN.
i use a Hotas stick. rudder pedals and the voice attack addon. I have axles enough to have all the directional controls, :)
Got the App (which looks great) but, it won't let me sign in?
hey guys if i explain in french how to pilot this ship, will you get it ? i don't think so. English is a wonderful language but for technical language the mother tongue will be better to explain.
Game is renown for very hard learning curve. (Message for non-simulator fans) expect to invest at least 50+ hours in this game just to learn the basics, after which you will get constantly pwned by high skilled veterans because they removed the single player.
No you won't get pawned by high skilled vets as the solo mode is still available for new players...
Is this game only in cockpit; or is there an outside view?
you didn't explain how to make your weapons cooldown faster.
This is the most confusing space flight game I've ever played. The combat tutorial hasn't ended after killing my objective and has me wandering aimlessly. I'm already getting mad, I can't wait to actually start the game :l
How about telling us the actual keys? I'm quite lost and can only try to test every button on my keyboard....
+Hoppi Hopp I think the problem with that is they'd have to say the default key/button for every different controller, i.e gamepad, m/kb, flightstick, stick w/ throttle, dual stick gamepad, etc. That would be tedious, confusing, and aggravating for most people to listen to, I think. IMO, much easier to just note the unfamiliar commands and then look them up after watching the tutorial. That's been working just fine for me and my 8-year-old boy. That way you can change what you don't like also. Its under options->controls, no need to hit random buttons. But if that works better for you, more power to you. I don't know what is with all the people having meltdowns in the comments over some people wishing for more detailed tutorials. They've probably never had any real problems.
Looking at the options->controls menu is probably the absolute worst way to learn the controls but you could do it of the UI for control mapping in this game wasn't awful.
Quick question: Are battles usually 10 or more minutes long? I did the solar fluke training mission in no time flat but when it comes to the mission straight after with two federal ships it takes forever.
***** took me 40- 50 mins to take down those 2 ships first and second time....this games needs practice, and more practice :) oh and second time was yesterday :)
***** Just bought it, (33% off? Fuck yeah!) and from the reviews it looks like one of those games where you need to spend hundreds of hours just to be competent. Not for everyone, but I like Dota 2 and Monster Hunter, so this is right up my alley. I'm sick of 'easy to learn, hard to master'. Give me 'nightmare to learn... master? HA, don't make us laugh, you'll never master this shit!' any day.
badgerbane but. . . games like dota 2 are easy to learn and hard to master
+Josef Not Yosef How could a battle have a 'usual' time? I've spent and hour and 45 minutes trying to get inside someone's shields before and annihilated others with a single shot. It depends on so many variables that that is just the most stupid question possible.
when I Watch this video, all seem pretty easy. But when, in the 2th tutorial, I fight against the ai vessel, he go in my back and attack me, and no matter how I try to rotate to try to face him again with my mouse and keyboard, I can't manage to do it xD. Rotate is so slow for me.
Great app just need it on Android next as thats my daily driver ;)
I really hate these "flat disc" radars in space games. The unwrapped sphere ones in Wing Command, Privateer, etc., make a lot more sense for a space game (where there's no up or down, and the "horizontal plane" of your ship is irrelevant), and are far more useful in a dogfight. Hopefully, someone will be able to mod it.
***** No, the line tells you the "vertical distance" (useless) between the ship and an imaginary "horizontal plane" that doesn't correspond to anything (you're in space; horizontal and vertical keep changing as you turn).
An unwrappeed sphere scanner (which you can get in E:D, BTW, but it's really small and basic) is much more intuitive in a true 3D environment. Middle of the scanner: ship is in front of your. Edge of the scanner: ship is behind you. Radial position in the scanner = the shortest arc to it (i.e., the direction in which you push the joystick to follow it). And icon size = actual range to your ship (not the vertical distance to some imaginary plane).
You get all the same information in a format that translates directly to your controls, with no need for lines measuring distances to things that aren't even there (and that change as soon as your ship rolls slightly, although your actual distance to the other ship hasn't changed).
***** And as soon as you roll your ship, all the line lengths change, although the distance between your ship and the other ones hasn't changed.
And yes, I know you can "work out the position of the other ships" (in fact, the disc scanner is just a miniature version of what you can already see in the main window).
You seem to be confusing my statement that one type of scanner is more suitable to a true 3D environment and corresponds more directly to your _controls_ with "there is absolutely no connection between the disc scanner and the position of the ships" (which no one ever said, at least not in this thread).
I know you can "work out their position". But a spherical scanner (which, BTW, is how a "real" 3D radar works) translates _directly_ to your stick movements, and doesn't clutter the view with lines that measure some virtual "vertical distance" that doesn't mean anything and changes when you change _orientation_ (i.e., change an _angle_ and the scanner shows you a different _height_).
Have you ever actually played Wing Commander or Privateer?
***** Rolling doesn't change the _position_ of your ship in any way. Do you understand the difference between *position* and *rotation*? Or between *angle* and *distance*? If you can't understand the difference between those two things, this is kind of pointless.
And I never mentioned Freelancer (which, by the way, does *_not_* use a WC / Privateer style scanner - in fact, it didn't really have a HUD radar _at all_).
So, _have_ you ever played Wing Commander and Privateer, or are you saying you "find A much better than B" although you've never actually seen or used B...?
The horizontal plane matches the position of your eyes. That's quite a useful reference for me given I've got two eyes which are fixed in relation to my arms.
Matt Hawkins If your eyes are fixed in relation to your arms, you need to have that spine checked. ;-)
Also, this is actually one of the few games where the "horizontal" plane doesn't even necessarily match the game's camera, because it allows you to move your point of view independently of the ship (i.e., you can look around the cockpit, either with your mouse or with a head tracker like TrackIR). The "horizontal" plane and heading of the scanner is fixed to the orientation of your _ship's_ chassis, not your _view_ (which makes perfect sense, BTW; it would be far more confusing if it followed your eyes or your arms).
"Set your system power levels."
Would be nice if you'd tell us how to do this both in-game and in this tutorial. Both say it's important but dont give any indication on how to do it.
i play this game in vr and its amazing
i just started. ITs pretty cool
I like the look but not sure I like the gamepad controls and the tutorial doesn't tell me what button to use for diverting power (hence me watching this video). I'm gonna try the mouse next. The game looks good once I figure it out.
Actually I use a controller for vr. It's easier because there are less buttons to feel for. It's the d-pad for diverting power
nice game for #Oculus
how do u respawn?
I'm worried about the 'orange, red and green colours'. I've got a colour blind green and red deficiency. Orange along with many other colours is also a pain in the ass :(
If you're on PC, you can find tutorials online to change your HUD colors. I don't know if you can change the icons mentioned in the video, but you can certainly change all the default orange interior.
Great game :) But why does the ship slow down when I extend my landing gear, in the vacuum of space. That's my major pet peeve with the game so far.
Maybe because of safety? The ship slows down itself. You are landing, so you don't need to go fast and crash into a control tower.
When you lower landing gear the Center of mass goes down, the ship slows down so it can compensate for rotation (how i explain it)
It's sad that I have to use this CZcams tutorial to pass the 1st combat training tutorial in the actual game.
The 2nd ship just melts me. How do I strip his shields?
You have to actually hit him with the fixed lasers. This is difficult with a joystick without joystick curves (Elite doesn't have them) so use a mouse and FA-OFF, go into option and set mouse to relative on. Pitch and Yaw on mouse, roll on Q E. Now you have full control over your direction and easy aiming. thrusters set them up like an FPS, WASD and SPACE (Thurst up/Jump) and SHIFT(thrust down/duck). Now you can change teh direction you are moving.
It takes a while to learn FA-Off but its worth it for the incredibly easy aiming unavailble to joysticks or with fa-on and mouse.
Now.
if you put pips to SYS, you actually boost your shields strength, it works like a multipler, so pop pips into SYS for way more shield, one into you laser and 1 into your thruster, this is the easiest way to beat the first ships til you learn more.
I'm sure you got better in three years
Hey, can anyone tell me if it is possible to have different settings for energy distribution and bind them to keys? I want full power to shields, rest to engines; full power to weapons and the rest to engines; full power to engines and the rest to shields. I might also want full power for engines and the rest to weapons for close in chasing someone down in a dog fight. Thanks :3
MrGoatflakes I think the arrow keys do what you are looking for. Tap to add power to a different section. - is covered in the learning material....right arrow systems, up arrow engines, left arrow weapon POWER!!!. um bot mid arrow to balance the force. ;)
Fyn Ach no.... What I want is to make it so i can press one button to get say full power to shields and the rest to engines. Faffing around with it bar by bar is error prone and also awkward if you have all power to weapons and the rest to engines.
"Use Yaw to fine tune your aim."
Maybe I just suck at flight sims, but aiming with any accuracy at all is impossible. The target is so small and the craft controls so wonky actually hitting something is like threading a needle with the leg of an angry spider.
How you do?
Anuri Haha Just as many aircraft games, set the mouse horizontal movement to yaw not roll, and set the A and D buttons to roll left or right. All solved :D
Anuri if your having trouble use gimballed weapons rather than fixed weapons, and play for hours practicing in resource and or conflict zones. this is my genuine recomendation.
郑竹峰 oh, my. I forgot that - have to try it again......dear sweet loardie was it that simple all along?
Invest some time playing this game and you'll discover a life you never knew you are living.
FD needs to work out something about those who get the kills way before you do, i hate bounty hunting because of this, everytime i hunt someone with a big bounty on his head, i get nothing because some security vessel killed the wanted person before i did.
At least give us some credit for the massive damage that we've done
Wanderon1 in a real life bounty hunter situation the killer or capturer gets all the credit, this game is meant to be a simulator so i dont think they will ever do that
this guy keeps talking about changing his power set up. that he can do it during combat and that it seems like an important thing to do. HOW god damn it!!!?
C. Storm Just change the pips of SYS, ENG and WEP.
You have told me to just do it.
How do I do this thing?
C. Storm I don't know how your bindings are mapped. :) On keyboard and gamepad, it's usually arrows, but look at the controls if it's not.
Thanks. Once my internet is restored I may attempt this game again.
It does still bother me that the tutorial and the video that is supposed to cover what the tutorial missed, both fail to mention how to do the important thing.
@@ondrejsaska3201 If a game needs you (Still 2 years later) to look into the Keybindings to tell you how do a thing they tell you to do. Then they have messed something up.
Here is a thought.
"Divert power to systems"
Default key binding?
HAVE EVERY LITTLE THING LISTED.
SAY THE BUTTONS.
Don't just say "preform this action"
How would you like it if you went into an RPG and were told to make money. You ask how, and you get the answer "make money".
Just bought this game yesterday based on good reviews, but it's a nightmare experience for a newbie - can't just get in and have fun.
Frustrating tutorials (like this one) - don't tell you how to do basic stuff like putting more power into engines from system etc. Being brought out of game to CZcams for videos is awkward too. Feels like the same unenjoyable and wildly mystifying ordeal as trying to pick up Eve online years ago was.
The game is lacking a proper, cohesive tutorial series that explains real basics (not advanced "basics") with reference to what default bindings are on keyboard / mouse or standard joypad etc. It's very disjointed and quite jarring at the moment.
Personal opinion obviously (aware I'm likely in the minority) - just extremely frustrating that it's like hard work or the Krypton Factor to just try and play/enjoy the game I spent 50 bucks on....
Hey man,
Not to be cocky, but ever heard of options>keyboard? It tells you everything what key bindings are allocated to your keyboard/mouse/joystick/controller. Also when you start the client there is an option to start elite training tutorial so it has a few modules that shows you basic stuff, like how to interact with your ship and etc etc... Look around first mate it needs a bit practice and understanding, but it's not hard at all.....
I agree with you...the combat tutorials even assume you know how to do everything. I know you can look in the options but would be nice if there were normal tutorials like most games.
AGREED 100%. I wish I hadn't wasted so much money. I think I might have to take a night class at the local community college to learn how to fucking move forward and backwards and decipher the hidden codex that is the hud and controls in this game. Someone tell the designer not all of us have been playing this beta for 4 years.
Alex Bor Not to be obvious, but if you think reading keybinds teaching you how to play and everyone is so stupid not to think of this, why aren't you running the world and are instead on youtube commentating and belittling others? You should be running the world with your gigantic brain and superior intellect right?
***** Why would they work on it? Aren't there keybindings in the faq.file somewhere? I mean doesn't that teach you how to play? Why do we need basic tutorials. Why not skip to a tutorial asking you to do many things that are not mentioned, are not highlighted, and are not intuitive? KEYBINDS MAN! I CRACKED THE CODE. I AM GENIUS.
Just bought this in the recent Steam sale and have to say the keyboard and mouse controls are atrocious! Can't even turn my ship around normally, to find an enemy in training mode. The only thing that works is A and D, which turns my ship so painfully slowly, I can't keep up. Q and E only seem to be strafe. So can someone tell me how the hell you're supposed to rotate the ship on the horizontal at any kind of speed?
So glad I didn't pay full price for this...
+Darren Smith look into the controls section and set keys at your desire. Thus you will be able to maneuver as you wish.
+Darren Smith One thing that really helped me when first starting. Switch your mouse X-Axis to Yaw, and then do button A for Roll Left, and button D for Roll Right. Switch those and then give the tutorial a shot.
Is it wrong of me that I just find combat in this game boring and to be avoided at all costs? I am generally a FPS kind of guy and my reflexes tend to be quite good but I've never had any luck in combat in this game so now I just spend any time in combat just avoiding conflict and waiting for my drives to charge so I can jump out.
Combat never seems to make any real money and seems like a complete waste of time financially. Is there something I'm missing that might make combat more worthwhile?
This has been improved significantly in the recent Gamma patches. I was able to go from a starter Sidewinder (with no upgrades) to a Viper in about two days, just from bounty hunting. Trading and mining is still a bit more lucrative if you've got the talent for it, but bounty hunting is totally viable now. As far as it being boring, I think that really just takes practice and knowing your options. You can trawl Resource Extraction Sites for pirates, Interdict wanted ships from Super Cruise or, especially at first, just hit Unidentified Signal Sources and nail anyone Wanted who shows up, since USS's show up WAY more often now.
Also depends on your taste, I suppose. It does take some practice until you feel good about it. :)
If you come from playing the original or Frontier Elite then you'll like this. Being a FPS kind of guy, you'll find it totally different. You need to lead your target to get hits and there are bounties I've seen for 100k per target so it's very profitable.
Having said that, I'm a trader so don't fight much but sometimes on a route, if I'm bored and get Intergeticted (whatever it's called) if I know it's an NPC I'll except it and fight. Not lost yet, just lead the target. I also think there is a bug currently where a lot of the NPCs that pull you out of Frame Shift end up having no shields :) and last night the Police NPCs turned up to help me out :)
I just had an awesome session where I made 250.000 from bounty hunting. I was lucky enough to come across 3 anacondas among other things.
It's not just you, I don't judge myself bad but combat sucks ass.
I fucking suck at this game so hard. I get killed in combat training............ Biggest learning curve Iv'e ever had in a game
