I don’t think she messed up at all. This was always who she was. And this was who he ALLOWED her to be. Listen to her words of truth “you always allow me to do what I want”. Those are the words of a woman who not only doesn’t respect her man but CAN’T respect him because he doesn’t respect himself. He’s needy, buying her loyalty to make up for the inadequacy he feels as a man. In the end he thought by embarrassing her he would sway the power dynamic of the relationship in his favor (after all he said “I still want to have a relationship after this”), but that’s not how masculinity works.
