This song was written by Irving Berlin and made famous by the 1930 film of the same name, 'Puttin on the Ritz'. Lyric shifts cause recurring distortions that need to be absorbed by the melody and can only be offset by singing quickly. Unusual for Berlin's compositions the refrain is kept in a minor key. 'Puttin on the Ritz' - slang and literally means "get dressed for the Ritz". The 'sad' listener should go where they have to be fashionably dressed.
