      OMG I loveeee Octavia Butler! She is definitely my top favorite black sci-fi writers! What books have you read from her?

      The entire Patternmaster series with Wild Seed being my favorite, Parable of the Sower, but I didn't like it, Kindred, and Fledgling.

      Nice! I didn't get to finish Parable of the Sower but it is definitely a good read. I really love Octavia Butler's work in general, she was such a genuine soul. Are there any other black sci-fi writers you can recommend me?

      I'm super picky when it comes to books, but I thought Binti and more particularly Binti Home by Nnedi Orkorafor were good.

      Thank you! Nice, I have read one of Nnedi's works before. She is a great writer! I will definitely have to check out the book you mentioned by her!

    Yeah, I hate shameless plugs of books too, but seeing as how you are talking about books by black writers, please check out the following two books: The High Price Of A Good Man (by debra phillips) and Love Trumps Game (by d.y. phillips). Can't wait to read your review. You ladies are good at this. Happy reading!!

    Maya Angelou is great, I was listening to a podcast where she was talking about "the white gaze" and said that she doesn't write about race, "Tolkien write about race" and it made me think about how most "fantastic-type" of movies or tv shows talk about race, even Game of Throne and I think in a way that's why I don't get it as much.

    • @creativecomplexity4
      @creativecomplexity4  Před 6 lety

      Yes! We love Maya Angelou! She was a very wise woman and I think I learned about the rhetoric of "the white gaze" in college. It's always interesting to read different things like that. - Britt ❤

    • @luciegoodvibes9883
      @luciegoodvibes9883 Před 6 lety

      ^^yes, I didn't know her before and I feel like it'll be great to have had studied it in France but here we only study about greek/anthenes/Egypt (excluding the black egyptians) and however get to discover lots of classics. And the only black writer we get mentioned is "Aimé Cesaire" and "Frantz Fanon" however we don't study him.
      It's great that we have a heritage and that black men and women wrote their story for us.

    • @creativecomplexity4
      @creativecomplexity4  Před 6 lety +2

      Yes, it's awesome! I have had to do my own research with finding black writers to read about. But I'm glad that the information is accessible via the internet!

    Can you recommend me black fantasy authors? I checked out N.K. Jemison's A Thousand Kingdoms, but I didn't like it.

      Hey! Sure thing! Have you heard of Tananarive Due? I took her Afrofuturism class at UCLA and it was amazing! We had to read one of her books in class and I really liked it. It was called "My Soul to Keep" by Tananarive Due. I also have been wanting to read Tomi Adeyemi's "Children of Blood and Bone"! It seems like a great sci-fi book. There is a movie coming out soon! - Charm 💕
