Is cracking PSA 9s a viable strategy given the subjective nature of grading, if you bought 100 PSA 9s and cracked and resub them all, wouldn’t your gem rate percentage still be like 35%?
You should start charging for these kinds of videos. Lol I always find it funny when people say “ PSA is harsh on 90’s cards,” that’s bc all of the 10’s are in slabs. I’ve don’t pretty well looking at the data and different sets. Some sets absolutely suck and I stay away from them. And they vary by year, so you constantly have to be doing your research. Great vid! Cheers.
Correct me if I am wrong. You are saying if you have an iconic Derek Jeter rookie card from 1993 or a Michael Jordan 1986 card in mint condition, chances are they will not be graded a 10 simply because you held onto them?
Gem rates and supply has nothing to do with Michaelis Menten kinetics. The classic Michaelis Menten kinetics plot is rate vs [S] on y and x axes respectively. You have supply (most akin to substrate conc. I guess) on the y and time on the x (at least rate is related to time?). None of the conclusions from this curve make sense. Vmax is where the supply hits an asymptote? Even though its the maximum rate? Are you sure you didnt mean to just draw a curve that reaches an asymptote to argue whatever youre saying about gem rates? Why bring enzyme kinetics into this at all? Unless theres some explanation for all the variables, like PSA is an enzyme that binds substrate (??), using this model makes no sense for predicting gem rate, card value over time, etc.
Good video not just older cards even prizm football 2023 there’s no Anthony Richardson autos left to grade u got 2-3 months to grade when they come out
100% correct. Every single card is going to have a different life cycle and yes, you are 100% spot on that brand new product even weeks/months after release, the "gradable" high quality cards all dry up. Something like a Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor may hit their Vmax literally 2-3 weeks after launch.
Great video but to me its more of control the pop cards Grade early more likely to get a psa 10 90's and 00's there is alot of psa 10's ready to be graded but since its been awhile psa dont look at the card and just slap it a psa 9 or 8 I have cards thats been in sleeved pack fresh from me doing that time and i send them some get 10's and some i scratch my head and say wtf Example before covid hardly anyone was grading football or baseball or any other cards doing that era and there psa pop report are low. What I know is first to grade more likely to psa 10
@@TylerShort Absolutely.. I live on eBay.. Facebook marketplace and I've been cleaning up on OfferUp. I'm a carpenter by trade. Any work I do on someone's house ,I take a look at the client and ask if they collect. I've been lucky that way. True collectors don't wanna come off their raw stuff unless the price is right. And of course the advantages I'm able to actually physically look at the cards
Gem rate is the rate for cards people sent to PSA. In theory thats a much higher quality sample than the overall pop. OTOH, gem rates can undersell how easy a certain set is to grade particularly for popular ultra modern stuff where rubes sub everything and cant pre screen to save their lives. 2023 Prizm football is case in point. I had 75% gem rate b/c I screened the heck out of those ebay photos and only bought perfectly centered, no print dots, sharp back corners. Overall gem rate is something like 35%--clearly driven by rubes.
No you are correct. Especially in the beginning of a product release, a specific gem rate is not reflective of an entire populations print run, but is still bound to and reflective of the aggregate "skill" of all graders submitting each card for grading in addition to the inevitable "variability" of the grading company. One day a card could be a 9, one day a card could be a 10. That margin for error should wash out over a larger population of cards. The point that this is trying to illustrate is that keeping all of those variables relatively constant, over time, the number of quality raw cards diminishes as the majority of them find their way into high grade holders, and thus that results in a logical fallacy for any subsequent buyers of raw cards who are trying to submit them for grading expecting the results to mimic the matured population report.
Ever heard of paralysis by overanalsis? Felt that way about 12 minutes in. Ridiculous amounts of unknowns. How many printed? How many still sealed? How many sitting in boxes for 30 years. Appreciate the effort, but you ruined everything.
@TylerShort Wow, are you arrogant as F! Mention biochemistry like a douchebag trying to impress people one more time. I have a college degree, understand your video perfectly, and think it's really dumb and a waste of time.
There really is no reason for you to be triggered. Your initial comment was condescending and lacking of substance. "Ruined everything." How about you use your "degree" and develop a well thought out rebuttal refuting what I described. Your comments, "how many printed, how many sitting in boxes, how many are in sealed wax" ....all addressed in this very easy to understand model. But you gave up 12 minutes in or you didn't listen and pay attention. #1 Grading mistake sir!
To show your theory you should buy the cards ebay like you do or pack pulled stuff and wait a few years then grade. in thory your gem rate should NOT change but in reality those same cards would be psa 9 or 8's
if psa cheats us i don't blame people cheating them....Pop control is real i've seen it psa 10 that are 8 or 9 and 8's that 10's its all subjective but thing to learn is get to psa as fast as possible
What people fail to realize is that there are tons of collectors who dont and wont grade.
Good to see your doing well, time goes on.
Which cards should I get graded? You: hold on, let me get my whiteboard.
Great video and insights.
Very interesting analysis - thank you!
No problem Brenda!
awesome tyler solid info
I feel like its as easy as grade the cards you want graded. Anything else is just investment advice.

I do it all the time. You gotta look good though. If it's centered , I crack it. Especially white border stuff. Foil is tough.

Were do you research the gem rates? Is it just on PSAs registry?

No, he's talking about what cards for newbies to buy and grade.

ever since covid yes new release you have to grade fast psa will shut down the psa 10 within a month or 2
Can honestly say I didn’t have michaelis menten equation on my PSA card grading video.
Now you can take that back to all your card friends and nerd out about it!
I may not get all 10s in my grading submissions, but I know that thumbnail is a Gem Mint 10!
Tyler Short, doctor of pharmacy and doctor of card flipping
Haha, I got to make this scientific somehow!
Buy raw cheap and comp on PSA 8/9. Grade yourself and then send them in. Simple game really.
Once I heard “half of Vmax is called km” I was immediately back in the library staring at lecture slides for biochemistry 🙃😅
Haha let's gooooo! Amino acids, enzymes, SUBSTRATE!

That's the number TWO mistake Duane haha
“If anyone here has taken biochemistry”😂😂😂
Next time, I'll talk about flipping burger at McDs, it will have more "mass appeal" to a cardboard audience 👍 Although I'll need to do some research
@@TylerShort nobody told you to do that. I just though what you said was funny, don't get your ego hurt.
Anything in a true collection can be graded. Theres so much stuff pre 2018 that Have not been graded. Thats the pool you gotta swim in.
You just got to find it. It isn't readily available

welcome to junk slab era where all new releases gets graded why don't fanactics just put graded cards in packs just get rid of middle man
