Jeff Buckley Made Radiohead Better

- Jeff Buckley was one of those artists that suddenly stormed the scene and changed music forever in just about a decade of activity.
Justin Hawkings, the singer of the British band “The Darkness” describes him as an anatomical anomaly, and if you ask any other great vocalists from the early 2000s they will surely mention Buckley among their biggest influences.
He even inadvertently changed Radiohead’s sound forever.
His passing through the musical circuit was so disruptive and brief that it would even be fair to compare him with legends like Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain.
But what made him so special?
What other artists were influenced by Jeff Buckley?
I don't know if influenced is the right word but Jimmie Page saw him in Sydney and HAD to go backstage to gush over his performance. Jeff was very shy and humbled. They spent time talking and Page recounted he was blown away.
Coldplay, Chris Martin has stated that Shiver was an attempt to rip him off.
Muse especially in their early era
Nothing But Thieves - their lead singer, Conor Mason is rather reminiscent of JB's vocal style and cites him as an influence.
Ohhh mann! It seems like almost every artist, at least that I have taken time to read about their influences (so clearly I was interested in them… but definitely a vast range of musicians) almost invariably mention him at some point! He seems to have made a very strong impact esp on artists!
Like so many that are ahead of their time, (or perhaps just transcend time ?) the masses don’t catch up for 10 years & most of the time never at all!
Elliot Smith (and so many others come to mind) when I think of the influence & impact they have had on other artists & ultimately what they create!
it's so crazy how such a small amount of music from one person can make such a big impact and influence people forever, including people not even alive when they were
Absolutely!
@GearAficionado great video by the way
Imagine making half of an album and then dying before it was completed and it still ending up being just an absolute banger. Goddamn.
Add Nick Drake
Not really, he was that good.
I feel bad for anyone who thinks Hallelujah is emblematic of his genius… Mojo Pin, Dream Brother, What Would You Say, Eternal Life, All Flowers In Time Bend Towards The Sun with Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins… if anything, his cover were elevated by his melodic imagination and songwriting skills, but they were never the showcase or draw into his work for me… I was listening to Mojo Pin on repeat before I even played hallelujah all the way through and figured out it was a cover.
I think Hallelujah was the gateway to Jeff Buckley for many of us, but I agree with you.
That was me for so long and I hated hallelujah so I never dove deeper. But seeing videos of him playing grace multiple times eventually changed everything for me
Let’s not forget Last Goodbye, Lover, you should have come over, Lilac Wine, Drem Brothers does rock. One of his best. He had such a beautiful voice & sooo many great songs. We lost a great artist and a true performer who could put emotion into voice and song!
Woke up in a strange place is a killer song in my opinion
@@tomalafleur8602 lilac wine is a cover
Thanks so much for posting, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead are two of my favourites 👍
Mine too! Thanks for watching.
same ❤❤❤
Me too…. 🤗
Video music essay but give it the tone of an unsolved murder mystery. I love it.
I haven't thought about it like that, but what a great idea!
Thanks for telling this often overlooked story. Jeffs influence on radiohead needed to be heard
Thank you for watching!
Jeff Buckley made the world a better place. Full stop.
Absolutely!
ful stop
ful stop started playing in my head when i read this
@@squtnik: I should have taken advantage of that reference. Kudos, good sir.
Amen. Ful stop indeed.
Jeff is one of those perfomers who sound even better live. The passion he showed while performing it's something I've never seen another artist do. He doesn't have a magnitude of songs but I literally don't get tired of just listening to Grace over and over. If you're new to his music, I recommend you check out his performances in Frankfurt, Cabaret Metro, Columbia Records, Seattle & the Glastonbury Festival.
Great stuff!
@@gearaficionado You know, you mentioned Nick Drake and I don't know if you knew, but Jeff actually knew Nick. He had Pink Moon. You can check it out on jeffbuckley.com, it has his entire CD collection.
There’s a live performance of Jeff Buckley’s cover of “I Know It’s Over” on CZcams and it never fails to give goosebumps.
I've lost count of the times i've watched the glastonbury version of "what will you say" shivers all over the place god damn it
I like your style! I feel that when talking about artists that died young, it´s too easy to talk in a way that feels too sensationalistic or even exploitative of that person's tragedy, but in this video I feel that you talk in a sensitive and personal way.
Thank you for the kind words, and thanks for watching!
I think the word you might be looking for is objective. He doesn't allow emotions to get involved. Just straight to the facts. It is refreshing.
@@AmericanSpyFox it’s sounds like an AI voice of chuck McGill from better call Saul is reciting it
Pretty sure this is an AI voice generator 👀 or you have a very close voice to the one I played with ahaha
@@tombamber9851 its an ai generator yea
I feel very fortunate to have followed him and seeing him live back in the early 90s. One of the all-timers for sure. He inspired so many, especially, to the band Muse.
As a huge lover of JB and his musical legacy, I want to thank for for making this piece. He was a supremely talented soul and we I consider us privileged to bear whiteness to it. Grace is a truly flawless piece of art.
Thank you! And I agree completely!
One of the only artists I know that has covered Jeff’s songs so well is an Australian artist called Matt Corby. He has been heavily influenced by Jeff and you can hear it in his music instantly. You can find his cover of “lover, you should’ve come over” here in CZcams. Highly recommend it 😊
Loved your video!! One about Elliot Smith would be awesome.
Shortlisted!
Elliott* pleaseee
I’ve said it once and I will say it again. Jeff Buckley is one of if not the best musician of all time.
wow this is one of the first video essays I've watched where I was blown away by the script. You are an incredible writer and your ability to convey so many emotions and thoughts in just words is remarkable. thanks for the vid
Oh, you're making me blush!
Are you sure you commented on the right video? Hahahaha
Thank you so much!
It's pronounced ~LIVE (like "alive") at SHIN-AYY~ Not "sin ee"... Good video though!
Completely butchered that one hahaha! Thanks for the feedback!
Yeah, it’s an Irish name. Sin é means “that’s it”. Probably came originally from a pub of the same name in Cork in Ireland, which was a big traditional music bar, that was beside a funeral home which inspired the name.
That album was recorded at a coffee bar in NY, called Sin-é :)
@@freereveller3099 Whose name was inspired by a music bar in Ireland called Sin é
It's Gaelic
The Radiohead intersection is my favorite JB story. There is another good one from the same solo tour where tennis legend John McEnroe was so taken by Jeff’s set that he offered to help him carry his gear out of the club.
Didn't know about that one! Amazing hahahaha
@@gearaficionado I believe I read that story in the book Dream Brother. Though it may have been McEnroe’s book “You cannot be serious” it was roughly the same period that I read both.
bros using the tiktok tts 😭
I'm a simple man. I see Radiohead, I click.
lol Lynyrd Skynyrd is gonna be stuck in my head now
Thank you for this! And thank you for mentioning Nick Drake! I fell in love with him years ago when Cedric Bixler-Zavales of The Mars Volta mentioned him in an interview.
If you haven’t already, I would love to see something on Talk Talk. I know Mark Hollis didn’t die young, but he left music at his height to be a father. And left a huge legacy with a band that actually seems to have influenced many people, as well.
I just “discovered” them recently and can’t get enough.
I will check them up!
When I found out that Jeff had passed away as I anticipated his next album after Grace, I never felt emotion like that about someone I didn't know. I still think to this day what would have come from this man. Musical greatness we will never know and always yearn for. I guess we were lucky to at least get the brief musical genius he produced. Forever timeless.
I also always think of Jeff and Nick Drake in the same moods, feelings, emotions... Such beautiful music they created
Nick Drake loved ‘Morning Glory’ by Jeff’s late father Tim Buckley. (If you have not heard Morning Glory go listen to it, now!)
Cool fact!
Yeah, His father was an underrated singer, I have an original vinyl recording of 'Greetings from LA' ...
I saw Jeff Buckley and Radiohead in concert in Detroit. in ~1992 I think. Amazing show.
I really envy you!
Nice video! Love both Jeff and Radiohead. Also there is a hint of Orson Welles in your voice which is awesome
Thank you for highlighting this connection!
The word choices you made, sedative voice you have, touchy guitar on the background and the infos you gave. It fits perfectly with Buckleys and i m a life long subscriber right now because of this. Thank you my friend.
Wow, thank you! Although it was clearly inspired by Jeff, I didn't do that on purpose.
Phenomenal writing, captivating video essay. Instant sub.
You are too kind!
I had heard that when Thom Yorke was having trouble with the song (didn't fancy doing falsetto, for whatever reason), John Leckie the producer, suggested going to see Jeff Buckley to see how he embraced falsetto. He went to the gig and it changed his outlook.
I went exactly under the A.W Willis bridge and was on the ramp where he walked down right on the harbor of the wolf river lagoon. It’s located between downtown Memphis & harbor town.
I spent every mornings during my visit down there listening to his music and I cried a lot, happiness, sadness, rage, it was all.
Always grateful for how much he changed my view in life.
I love radiohead a ton! But I did go on a side tangent with Jeff Buckley. I love all his music, he is an amazing singer. Grace really touched me. Thanks for the video on 2 of my favorite artists.
Thanks for watching!
He's music was so powerful, I can only listen to it when i'm in a certain mood and always manages to get to me like a dagger. Thank's for this video.
Thank you for watching!
Jeff Buckley is a legend and often my most played artist. I'm also a fan of Radiohead and Nick Drake and I absolutely love Tim Buckley!!! Thanks for the video!
I discovered Jeff on last year. I'm crying now with your vídeo. Thanks man. Very thanks.
Thank you for watching!
Grace is my coming of age. It’s when I knew I had good taste in music. Then I found Radiohead. Seemed like a natural progression.
"She's the tear that hangs inside my sould forever"...
One of my favourite lines of all time. Poetry in motion 🎶
awesome, thank you for the data, lots of love.
Thanks for this video. I was actually a huge fan of his dad Tim back when I was a kid, 12 years old. Tim was amazing and influential, and his music moving, so he deserves props even though he has been completely forgotten. When his son came around, I was absolutely skeptical and gave him the old eye-roll. "How could he possibly follow his dad?" The lad proved me wrong, heh. And then when he died, like his old man died, I couldn't take it and stopped listening to his music. I still have a big problem with his music for this reason. Gave you a follow. Keep grinding!
Indeed a really sad family story.
Thank you for the follow!
Definitely a transfer of voices from Tim to Jeff. Although different sound and style, you can see the natural talent from each.
Yeah I remember hearing Buckley for the first time in my mates car on the way home from work.
He most definitely made one of the biggest impacts in music and poetry since the early days of recorded music.
Holy fucking god I’m so glad Radioheads members are all still around WOW
Let's dont' even think about that!
I remember the show King of the Hill had a character named Buckley in tribute to Jeff.Another phenomenal singer Chris Cornell and Jeff were great friends. Both gone too soon.No disrespect to Mr.Coen version of Hallelujah but,Jeff made the composition forever his.A voice of an angel singing those heavenly lyrics. The Buckley family we’re such talented artists. You can say what could have been.I believe it’s better to have than nothing at all,
I was in that crowd at Glastonbury. So lucky to have seen him.
even though jeff is wildly known and had inspired many musicians, it weirdly feels like he's not as appreciated as he should be.
Absolutely!
Loved it, beautiful, insightful and respectful to Jeff. Thank you for the video. Would you be interested in doing one on Elliot Smith as well? He's another very bittersweet artist that's gone.
Many people are asking for Elliot Smith! I will definitely do one about him soon!
@@gearaficionado Can't wait. :) Looking forward to your future videos
Wow my two favorite artists..
Didn't know they saw each other and Jeff inspired Thom Yorke, thanks ❤
quality work man
Thank you!
nicely written piece of work, insightful and spot on. delivered as if by Joe Friday of 1960's Dragnet "just the facts , maam" fame. kool, love the background reverberating tones too
Thanks for watching!
An enormous Talent and such a good looking man. He has it all. Rest in peace sweet brother.
his music just so deeply struck into my heart
Jeff Buckley changed my life. Grace and Sketches was one of the most life defining records I have ever listened to.
Buckley was an amazing vocalist, but what often gets overlooked is his incredible guitar playing.
LEGEND. YOU MENTION TWO LEGENDS>.. THANK GOD FOR JEFF AND RADIOHEAD.. I can't imagine a world without Thom's falsetto. Jeff, a poet, a prophet, a Shaman and a seer. Amazing
I got chills when you mentioned Nick Drake.. for whatever reason I found them at the same time too. My first Jeff song was Dream Brother. Maybe they felt me fading,, and called out in the ethers to keep me afloat.. because I'm not going anywhere now. love playing and singing both their songs.
Awesome video👌🏼
Thank you!
this make me wanna check out jeff now! i knew he influenced thoms vocals, its interesting to see Jeff's story, such heartbreaking lost
You absolutely should!
Live at Live At Sin-é - as in live music.
And it’s Sketches for my sweetheart the drunk.
Perfect Video !!! Thank You !!!
Glad you liked it!
I'm pretty sure the script for this video was made by ChatGPT
I wish!
It's amazing how Jeff influenced Fake Plastic Trees which forever changed Radiohead.
Nicely done. Can you do one on sparklehorse
Added to the list!
Everything is better with Buckley.
May his beautiful soul rest in peace.
BTW: Check out a guy named Cameron Michelle. So awesome.
I’m ashamed I’m 35 and never heard of him! Checking out some of the Grace album and he was definitely amazing 🤩
I think a mention of Gary Lucas would have been very appropriate here, as Jeff's guitar style was very heavily influenced by him.
Also, the theme of the song Grace was written by him! Gary played a pivotal role in the early career of Jeff.
I missed that!
Yes, i wanted to mention this too!
the invisible wire who connect Jeff and Nick...amazing!
IMHO, there is 'Woke Up in a Strange Place" anyway you can hear it and everything else he ever performed....acoustic or electric. The best
Jeff Buckley made anybody who tried to play his songs a lot better my guitar skill went up about 1000% learning his stuff, let alone his incredible fucking voice.
Buckley is the best guitarist I’ve ever seen.
I’m not saying Jeff wasn’t possibly the best rock singer ever I’m saying he is the most underrated guitarist of all time
Reasonable to compare him to Hendrix in one respect. They both massively improved on songs by incredible songwriters, both of whom had voices that sound like putting burnt cheeseburgers through a shredder.
As a musician myself; learning that 2 of my favorite alternative artists were influenced by each other is inspiring
Great mini documentary! Never heard about the Radiohead seeing him live. Jeff also influenced Muse vocals as well or to embrace his falsetto.
My uncle Gary Lucas co-wrote Grace / Mojo Pin. Including songs to No One 10 song EP. Enough credit cannot be given to Gary for discovering Jeff & truly inspiring him to embrace his vocal range with many freestyle performances.
Check my patented fretboard invention. Pull any string over edge of the fretboard to pluck notes and alter pitch. In fact Jeff does vibrato over edge of fretboards on the high E on his Chicago Hallelujah live performance solo. He never played a song the same way twice.
Amazing!
He looks like if Jame Franco and Heath ledger had a baby 🙏🏽
I can't unsee that now!
I returned from Vancouver to live in Toronto the fall of '94 and ran into my friend Chris Wodskou who had been at the Buckley show a few nights earlier. He said it was like a religious experience...
I'd like to suggest you check out Judee Sill. She had a vast and unappreciated influence. Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Bill Callahan, Joanna Newsom, Adrienne Lenker of Big Thief, and Weyes Blood, just to name a few.
Will check her out!
Great video about some musical geniuses
No conocía la relación entre JB y esa canción en particular de Radiohead. Me ha encantado saberlo porque es una de mis canciones favoritas de Radiohead y JB es sin duda una de mis voces preferidas.
Yo me enteré hace poco también!
When will they do a movie about him... he needs more recognition.
It would be an amazing biopic for sure!
Awesome vid
Thank you!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
I waited with baited breath and stunned like my own personal 9/11 when wfnx announced Jeff was missing. I hoped with all my heart that it was just like my own life at the time, chaotic happenstance strung together with the desire for experience and less so responsibility. Then and there the rip and tear of all the could have been magic flitted away dust on the shelves at his mother's confirmation. A musician the likes enough that Lucifer himself did kill.
I loved him.
I was just watching Leaving Las Vegas. Wonder if My Sweetheart the Drunk had any inspiration.
Buckley, the genius who threw it all away.
Man what could have been if he didn’t leave us so abruptly
Jeff Buckley changed my life.
loved this!
Thank you!
This is well written
you should do a version with the keith morrison voicebot
Amen!
nice doc. p.s. the name of his first EP was Live (as in not pre-recorded) at Sin-é (pronounced shin-NAY)
My bad!
I'm wondering if someone knows which concert Thom and his friends went to ? Is that concert on spotify or youtube ?
What you talking about I’m friends with Thom Yorke from 94 and his who changed his sound was Influenced by the bad Beda band when he toured with them and his producer Nigel Godrench hooked up with him because Nigel was Beda bands producer.
Good one, except the pronunciation of 'Live at Sin-é', which, to anyone who's seriously into his music and knows anything bout his career, should be a given...
Noted for the next time!
What a beautiful human
this pains me, i grew up on buckley. His works never get old. His voice is so amazing. I feel what you're saying here too hard.
Did he start playing guitar at six? I seem to remember him saying that it was much later when he was 12 or 13.
Hey, I'm #33 👋 great job! Liked and subscribed. Wish you all the best. Excited to go through your vast back catalog now 😂
I promise the catalog will grow in the coming weeks 😂

It's from freesound dot org. Search for "soundscape dust ambient"
@@gearaficionado I guessed it was a free sound. I'll go check, hopefully I'll be able to find the specific track. Thanks!

One of the greatest singers in history
Agree!
ITS JUST A SIGN OF THE TIMES
I was once told his 2nd album was supposed to be called Letters to my Sweetheart the Drunk, which is why the unfinished version we have today is titled ‘sketches’.
I came to see a video about how Radiohead were influenced by Jeff Buckley and got a lecture of Jeff Buckley's greatness that included one and a half anecdote about Radiohead. It's not a bad video and it's deffinetley a content that people would want to see, so there's no need for such a clickbait title
It did extremely well though 😂
