The Radiohead Effect

- Only a handful of bands truly command attention and analysis when one of their songs enters a scene. Radiohead is undoubtedly one of these bands. Sure, two of their key members are successful film composers and their unique sound definitely lends itself to cinema, but it’s more than that.
Radiohead’s music is hard to define. It weaves in and out of various genres; it’s distant yet comforting; it’s harsh yet beautiful and poetic. But maybe most importantly, Radiohead’s music makes us think. Listen to any random track and you can immediately tell that an extraordinary amount of thought went into every single note and word. When one of these songs accompanies a scene, this thoughtfulness bleeds into the narrative. In short, Radiohead’s songs are the keys to opening doors that filmmakers didn’t think they could open.
If you’re as fascinated as we are about how a great composer can elevate a film, don’t miss our “Score Auteur” series, featuring Radiohead’s own Jonny Greenwood, Hans Zimmer, and Trent Reznor. And follow up those great videos with our article on the aesthetic of the late, great Jóhann Jóhannsson. - Zábava
If I ever hear a Radiohead song in a movie or show, I’m going to let EVERYONE in the room know that I know Radiohead and what song is playing.
You're like the vegan of music bands
i do that too, but not only when Radiohead is playing but with every single song/band that i know

Everyone knows Radiohead they just don't necessarily know they know Radiohead
I would also go so far as to say everyone likes Radiohead, even though they don't know they like Radiohead because they don't necessarily know they are hearing Radiohead.
@@mandia_macnot true, that may apply to people that don't know about them.
That’s what I say about Queen
Felt like that with Gorillaz until a few years ago lmao
I don't tend to recognize songs I heard in movies, so Radiohead songs still sound new when I play them for the first time. Doesn't feel like I "know them".

People still buy albums? Not trying to look down upon it just honestly surprised and curious, I and pretty much everyone I know stream music nowadays. I still remember the good o’l days with the MP3 players and discs..
Takes me back to when I got my first car and bought the most expensive speakers I could find and would ride around picking up friends and girls while playing whatever song with the strongest and quickest bass at full blast.
additional trivia: Thom Yorke declined to score Fight Club due to the stress of releasing OK Computer.

I love how they used Radiohead in Black mirror

It really made the end of that episode much more impactful. Such a masterpiece of a song.

I always think of the use of "No Surprises" in the episode where House winds up in the mental hospital. To me that perfectly captures scene and song.
Have you seen how it was used in Rock Dog? Perfectly captures the song’s vibe!
Dude that song fits so perfectly in that scene it makes me cry
I just heard about 6 seconds of that song in exactly that scene and I was dying to know its name, it really got me hard.

No, depression is depression. Radiohead just provides the perfect soundtrack.
And anyway, I think that depression is just the result of looking at the crap that surrounds us all, without the filter of naive optimism.
The moment Ramin Djawadi’s version of “Exit Music” started playing in Westworld...I’ll never forget this as long as I live. One of the greatest moments in TV history.

its a pop song. arranged for weird minimal electronic sounds. that's what radiohead does, puts pop songs under avante garde arrangements.
Tanner B I wouldn’t say comfortable at all, but it is incredibly catchy to me.
In 1997 I was managing an independent Record Store in Santa Monica , CA . Our lease was up and we were about to close. Ok Computer and Urban Hymns ( The Verve) came out and sold so well we singed a 5 year lease. I owed my job to Thom Yorke and Richard Ashcroft. The power of Rock & Roll.
Oh yeah good times before internet piracy and illegal download
freaking awesome
Fuck yes! Ashcroft and Yorke are my favorites.
Nothing to do with Nick McCabe, Jonny Greenwood, Simon Jones, Simon Tong, Pete Salisbury, Phil Selway, Ed O’Brien or Colin Greenwood eh?
I love this story.
That one scene in the Creator with "everything in its right place"
It will be the saddest day in my life, when Radiohead no longer produce music. From the day I was introduced to OK Computer in my late teens, Radiohead has been the definitive soundtrack to my life.
Also the use of "Deck's Dark" to set the perfect tone for the end of the first episode of Ozark. Just one drawn out long shot with the track playing into the credits. Great Essay man!
This is definitely the most profound and effective use of Radiohead music onscreen
noo now i got to see that show, i love that song

JRhodes in my opinion is the best ending to a prologue episode in a tv show, and the song is a big part of it.

Same. I went through my entire despicable teen sad rock phase without once discovering Radiohead. Probably a good thing, high school me would’ve listened to them in a whole wrong way

@@El1society i had a radiohead phase in early high school and i only listened to their popular stuff, now that i’m going into college, i reignited my love for them in a kind of rediscovery. i’ve went through their whole discography and found so much more to love.
There is still more music that we didn't fully appreciate. I like discovering things I missed. For example, Tool is better than I realized in the past. CZcams is helpful for this.
That Incendies opening scene is one of the very best there is.
And Thom Yorke’s forthcoming film score is one of the reasons I cannot wait for Suspiria.
Thom Cruise is Thom Yorke's brother
*Yorke
Miguel Pereira thx!
Score was fine but film was trash
Arlo Steiner IMHO it was the most adventurous, crazed, yet brilliant film of 2018. Not the best of the year (as Green Book and the Favourite were impeccably executed), but steeped in symbolism to the point in which the second watch clearly exceeded the first. Looking forward to a third pass with friends now that it’s on Amazon Prime.
Fun fact: Exit Music (for a film) was written for Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet”! Luhrmann sent them a tape of the last part of the film and that is what the song is about, the tragic and everlasting love of the star crossed lovers. The song in the film is really quite a powerful device and if the rest of the film didn’t make you emotional, listening to that song paired with the knowledge of the past events will.
Exit Music for a flim wouldn't work well with that movie at all, Romeo + Juliet is batshit insane
I can’t get over how different this band is from others. They create art in their own way. Sometimes it can take me off to a different thought process of my mind.
The end of the pilot of Ozark using “Decks Dark” fit perfectly
Also the end of S3E1 they used "The Daily Mail" and it couldn't have been any better.
You forgot to add House MD to this list. In the pilot episode of S6, the protagonist goes through hell in rehab for his Vicodin addiction. It is this moment when “No Surprises” plays and the character screams for help. It is so scary how the music connects you with the character on an emotional level.
I love radiohead ... I listen to radiohead when I am feeling depressed or emo, and it helps me regulate my emotions... They really do make very powerful music and you can feel that every cord, note, bar has a purpose!
"emo" ugh. When Radiohead came out 'emo' wasn't even a term.
@@masterninja9716 wow shocking a Radiohead kid thinks Radiohead invented music so "original lmfao" band is trash especially thom

Thom Yorke voice and music is haunting....
I discoverd Radiohead through a movie. It was Confessions by Tetsuya Nakashima and it used Last flowers from In Rainbows.
In Rainbows is such a good album. Videotape is such a good & probably the most depressing song ever.
Yeah, there's this blog post about what the saddest of their songs is. Acording to the post, it's True love waits. But Videotape is pretty much on the top 10. www.rcharlie.com/post/fitter-happier/
You and whose army in incendies still gives chills

"Lucky" playing at the end of an episode of Six Feet Under was incredible too.
I dream about a work made by David Lynch and Radiohead or Thom Yorke

Lmao never gonna happen. These worlds collide. They're too much their own to become one. Leave it to NIN and Johnny Jewel to fill the void of Lynch when it's in need of another kind of nostalgia.
exit music was just perfect for that disturbing ending of the black mirror episode
Radiohead is something else. It's genius.
The use of Exit Music at the end of Black Mirror's Shut Up and Dance is just the best.
What's great about hearing them in the background of Children of Men is that theyre saying 'this what some of the fanbase will be like in the future' and I would love to be Micheal Cane.
He's the most likeable, father figure like character in that whole movie.
I could watch an entire series just based off Micheal Cane as a hippie. I really love his character.
It made me completely light up hearing Radiohead in that scene. It definitely added to the atmosphere and made Michael Caine even more genuine.
I think the radiohead effect is literally just, these songs have meaning, and when you put them in the context of a film it actually carries emotional weight cause the songs have meaning XD
Honestly they dont have much meaning to it lol........Radiohead's music is like Star Wars where once you see Star Wars, you HAVE to tell everyone that you saw Star Wars..........
@@MakeMeCare89 Its not just lyricsal meaning, cause yeah some of those dont have meaning of course. But the songs themselves have purpose for existing, theyre not refreshing the same old same old paint by numbers, they have new ideas, new innovations, new feelings. The Instrumental meaning, is just as important as anything else, and these songs definitely do have that
TBH it’s late and I just came here for a quick hit of Radiohead classics with some thoughtful visual accompaniment to remind me of my admiration for their versatile art. Delivered. Thanks mate.
I felt the interpretations of all the songs weren't explained very thoroughly.
Perhaps one of the most memorable and impacting use of Radioheads songs, (for me) was at the end of the movie 'I Origin'. One of the most beautiful scenes ever. A great film overall
Don't forget the Japanese film CONFESSIONS where they used LAST FLOWERS by Radiohead.

"though often classified as alternative rock, radiohead's music transcends genres"
wow!!! incredible
It's funny how this video is enjoyable while not saying anything deep or new. Perhaps the compatibility of great music and great picture is so obvious in each case that it doesn't need further explanation. After all, those people in the movie industry quite often know what they're doing:-).
This was a commendable post and description using proper vernacular for the topic. Thank you for having so thoroughly hashed this out.
I have often wondered for what reason the writers of Peaky Blinders have chosen Radiohead. It was hauntingly beautiful this past season (6), with Thom having written the finale piece. We, the audience, are outsiders from another era. Thanks for sending this home.
Thank you for making this ❤️
two of their key members are successful film composers because they developed their skills in Radiohead, they started out as a university rock band but honed their skills to the point they could cross genres and write music fitting of a score.
My god. Thank you for this video. This is a subject that I have thought about many times. For a lot of Radiohead songs that I listen to, I close my eyes and think, 'This song sounds like a movie moment.' If I had to give a description of Radiohead's music, it would be "film scores with lyrics." Everything In its Right Place, Daydreaming, Ful Stop, etc. The best usage of one of their songs, I believe, is Exit Music in Black Mirror. You can just tell that that entire sequence was built around that song and it was brilliant. Great video, man.
This video was really well made and inspiring. Thank you!
this is one of my favorite videos in life... I sometimes feel sad for not knowing enough people who'd appreciate it, to share it with them.
I always love to watch other people praise this band as I do, Radiohead changed my life!

Thank you, I have been trying to find scenes with their music--just to see it's execution.
Loved how you guys ended the video from the closing scene from the movie: I Origins. Brilliant movie and the song 'Motion Picture Soundtrack' does huge justice to the movie and ends the movie with getting your heart pounding. Beautiful. Been a radiohead fan since then.

I remember watching I Origins for the first time, just when I thought I couldn't physically get anymore emotionally invested in the film - the intro to Motion Picture Soundtrack began. I became far more emotionally invested into the film. One of the all time great bands. Great video.
Seeing Leo as Romeo with Radiohead playing in the background was one of the coolest things ever
The films that are dark and ethereal and contemplative and slow paced pair well with Radiohead. Also, i freaking loved Thom Yorke’s song for Suspiria, it was so tear-worthy.
I am a huge movie lover, and also a huge Radiohead lover. So, this is gold for me

I can't believe how many Radiohead songs I've heard without knowing it. Listening through their discography now, I don't remember the actual songs but I remember the scenes hitting really hard with the music they had.

I watched Black Mirror and discovered Radiohead. That's how amazing they are.
I don't understand how being in Black Mirror makes them amazing

I liked your sudden and abrupt ending, it really did have an effect on me the same way you described the use of Codex in "Prisoners".
So, just more reason to love Villenueve, PTA, and Radiohead.
Genius complementing genius.
Thank you for making this video! If it wasn't for this video I would of never discovered the film "I Origins". Everyone check that movie out. Incredible film and the Radiohead song at the end haunts me every time.
6 minutes in I was about ready to comment on how you left out "I Origin", one the best uses of RH, and then it came on for the save in the last seconds.
I love how important that song is for the films conclusion, the music and lyrics are just as much a part of the film's ending as the story and visuals.
Honestly that song and how well it fits the emotion of that closing scene is why I still have such strong memories of that little indie film I watched 5 years ago.
Thank you for this video. As a Radiohead fan of 18 years+ I am glad that you recognized this.
Optimistic is best song for me.

Everything in it's right place is one of most perfect tracks I can think of. That music makes my tongue taste electricity (not kidding)
"Dark decks" at the end of the first episode of Ozark was perfect. Love this video. Thanks.
The Bear's use of Let Down makes a great addition to this
I've never cried in my life like in the "I Origins " scene
Great video, to watch a film and hear RadioHead is mindblowing. Black Mirror and I Origins blew me away. I also agree that they really set a mood in a film, it's all very cinematic. By the way, Codex doesn't finish because it fades into Give Up the Ghost on the the album. I should know, I got my yt name from the song lol.
If you find "Everything in its right place" is not catchy is that you haven't listened to it enough times, or with proper headphones. Kid A is a crazy album. I think people find RadioHead unapproachable because on a surface level it's kind of weird. But listen to an album twice, maybe three times, there's no doubt most of the songs will grow on you. Start with OK Computer, In Rainbows or The Bends. If you like that, you should love it all.
Radiohead always seems to make me cry. Especially when it’s snuck into a movie. Almost instantly I will get more invested with the film and then tear up.
I'm so in love with this video, that I wrote the script in my journal and I'm gonna write it down once more and hang it on my bedroom wall, like damn you did a good job!! thank you! you explained what I feel and experience when I listen to them..thank you!
