"its late and I'm tired" ....Perfect scenario for a Radiohead vibe sesh.
Currently 5am... I concur
😂
Aye i haven't finished the video yet but if you didn't find it yet you gotta watch their "In Rainbows From the Basement" video you can really understand how many instruments are playing at once.
Yup, what he said 👆🏼
I caught this on tv before school so long ago. It introduced me to the band I’ve been hooked since.
The best perfomance
TKOL from the basement is a masterpiece as well.
Mesmerizing performance
Once you get to Weird fishes, its over... You'll never find a more satisfying riff
It’s not a riff. It’s an arpeggio.
@@Fkdurecords you right... You right...
@@Fkdurecords A riff is a repeated musical phrase. Arpeggiating the chords counts. It’s not an arpeggio, it’s a series of arpeggios which it would be fair to call a riff.
@@Fkdurecords”it’s not a car it’s a Honda civic”
@@Fkdurecords yes, it is a riff
It might sound dramatic to those who haven’t felt it, but discovering Radiohead was one of the most significant experiences of my life. It’s an honour to have an insight into your journey.
I still remember the first time Radiohead truly spoke to me. I had heard 'em on the radio before, but that was the problem. This was all pre Kid A, and I was in primary school 😂
Then, at the age of 13, I heard Kid A, in its entirety, when the local radio station had "new release Sunday"
It was the first time I was truly in awe of a complete album. I suddenly understood Radiohead.
I have since seen them live 7 or 8 times!
I feel like Radiohead is like a foreign language that you were forced to study at school and always hated because it made you feel stupid and then one day you wake up and understand it.
You wake up and you feel it. We'll never understand it haha ❤
First time hearing in Rainbows...what is this noise? Third time...this is genius!
I understood immediately at about 14
lucky ❤
Damn real
In Rainbows is still their "new stuff" to me. I feel so old. The the previous albums practically defined my late teens, then I sort of grew out of them. Pure nostalgia at this point.
there is clearly before and after amnesiac, and in rainbows as a synthesis of the whole Radiohead career seems a good take on the album to me
I agree, I can remember literally the exact place I was at when I first heard OK Computer. Even the weather. And the cigarette brand I smoked back then. Their early work is way more vivid and impactful for me. But… In Rainbows is still the album I listen to most frequently now a days. It’s an album that doesn’t make me uncomfortable like Kid A, which is maybe a detriment, but my life is more stressful now than it was back when I listened to that album on repeat, so I’m not drawn to it in the same way. The same is true of a lot of their music. If that makes sense…
Yeah it was almost impossible for me to listen to anything else back then. Kid A, I was eighth grade. Loved them all especially Hail to the Thief. When In Rainbows came out, I was listening and waiting to like it when one day my roommate said “Lazy name, lazy music, there’s no dissonance, this is not what I listen to Radiohead for.” And just like that I was over Radiohead.
Yup. Just go Chronologically, there's no magic formula. Listen to how they grew. The Bends and Ok Computer are still their best for me because they meant so much to me when they came out. Yes, I'm old. But not quite as old as the band themselves.
In Rainbows is absolutely new Radiohead. And yes we’re old.
The guitar in 15 step is phenomenal
The Bends is a 90s guitar masterpiece
Kid A is one of the best albums ever
Yes, but Ok computer is the best album. In the Aeroplane Over The Sea is up there too
@@DJG_Studios I like Kid A over Ok Computer. I love Ok Computer, but I love Kid A more.
@@hamburger512 They are two incredible albums, most bands don’t make anything as good (in my opinion)
I've worn 3 cds out 🤪
I concur
And then there's Ed O'Brien (mind explodes)
Thom is no slouch either, all 3 of them are playing together live is just wonderful.
That EOB album, with "Olympik" and "Brasil" is awesome.
I've never heard a Radiohead record, but I don't listen to rock music.
@@peteywheatstraws4909you’ve never heard a Radiohead record, but you listen to EOB?
@@peteywheatstraws4909 listening to Olympik now. first time. that's not Ed O'Brien. that's U2 right? hehe. just kiding.
@@lukegarris0n Yes, when his (Ed O'Brian?) album came out, they played it a lot on the NPR station I listened to at the time.
A program called "Outside the Box" had it in heavy rotation on weekends, during the week it's primarily news talk radio.
Now, subsequently, because of a lot of the comments on this thread, I did go pull up some Radiohead songs, and I was familiar with "High and Dry", which I really like, I just didn't know it was radiohead.
But yeah, that EOB album is textural, ethereal, and beautiful.
Wonderful record.
Do all the albums, in chronological order, from start to finish. It's always wonderful witnessing people finally get Radiohead.
Ed O'Brien is a really interesting guitar player too, there's a great interview with him on That Pedal Show from a few years ago where, amoungnst many other things, he demonstrates how he uses a memory man to create ambient textures
Absolutely. Seems like Johnny always gets the (well-deserved) guitar credit, but many don't realize just HOW MUCH Ed is contributing!
That was an eye-opening video. I didn't realize how much of the soundscapes that are so crucial to Radiohead's sound were him.
Ed is the most underrated guitarist ever
when i was in college, we would throw parties on or around April 15th.
they were known as "Ed's Birthday".
Pretty fantastic times from a massively underrated musician.
Came here to say the same thing!
Definitely give The Smile a listen. They just put out their second record. Its Thom and Jonny's side project to Radiohead.
I mean it's their main band now. I doubt Radiohead is coming back :/
@@duvisol yea right now definitely. I think a few months back Phil mentioned Radiohead is right around the corner
Radiohead light 😉
@@duvisol Radiohead will come back, The smile is very Good but it's not the first side project and it won't be the last...
Got to see The Smile live last year. Great experience. I can die happy having seen Thom and JG live.
KID A is the one I always reach for. It’s strange and impenetrable and dissonant, but when you get it, it never lets you go. It was the soundtrack of my mother’s fight with cancer. All the trips I took to the hospital that was in the CD player. It’s my comfort album.
I find that its disinterest in the listener makes it a great foil to project your feelings onto
Morning bell is my favourite. It just oozes tension.
My god, I wish I could discover them for the first time again.
Ok that’s me . Aside from the radio songs… here I go
Radiohead is great. Jonny is a legitimate musical genius, but it's wild how much of the In Rainbows guitars are actually Thom. If you're looking for more traditional guitar driven stuff than post-OK comp Radiohead, you should check out the Smile, which is Jonny, Thom, and the drummer from the jazz band Sons of Kemet.
My favourite band growing up was Coldplay, hands down. My mates would always say that Coldplay is just watered down Radiohead. For years I resented that. But then everything clicked and realised that Radiohead is just ridiculously magical. I still love those first Coldplay albums, but the connection is clear.
Sparks gets me everytime
Welcome to the club!
johnny scored "There will be blood". he's far more than a guitar player
I love his Spencer score
Hail to the Theif is nuts. It was their most creative and cohesive record imo.
Wouldn't call it cohesive myself, but it's very underrated. I think they themselves said that they were focusing on making the individual songs sound great rather than making it a cohesive album
@@edgeworth097 Am I right? yes. Are you right? yes. Is Radiohead right? yes.
...and one of the greatest openings to an album ever. Plugging in that guitar after Kid A and Amnesiac, classic!
@@chrissolnordal9421 absolutely agree
The Gloaming is that fire
The fun part is listening to their music over decades. There’s always something new you’ll hear or find in their songs that make you fall in love with them again and again
I noticed when I started getting into hifi that there were so many layers and details I was missing before. Really glad most of their music is so well recorded. Nigel Godrich is basically another band member with his recording work.
It's one of the bands i don't get tired to listen to, is weird, i'm a big NIN fan but i get a little tired of them, but i listen to Radiohead a few years ago and i don't get tired of them, i don't know what they're music has.
Same feeling here
Many moons ago (OK Computer) I interviewed their guitar tech and the amazing thing is they never used any offstage effects…everything was under their control from the stage with all the pedals chained, etc.
It's just wrong how much I enjoyed you doing the old "yelling with headphones on" 🤣
Radiohead at 2006 Bonaroo, my best concert ever.
Great one. If I had a time machine, that's my first use of it.
This is the best video I’ve seen on your channel. I was surprised that watching you discover this band (as in, the footage of you listening to it) was so watchable. The follow up of how you approached diving into the sound of rhe band as a guitarist was really helpful to me as a budding player. Thanks for this and your channel.
My favourite band! After seeing them on TV for the first time back in ‘96, I went out and bought a Telecaster! If you really want to see the true genius of the band, check them out live!
The bends:
"It's late... I'm tired"
YESSSS PERFECTTTT
Mike this is fantastic. You're a great storyteller and getting better and better. Really impressed with how much time you put into these videos, how you use different cuts and different angles, stock footage, historical footage. I can't imagine how long it took you to make this video but it's fantastic.
Now when it comes to Radiohead - you need to give yourself lots and lots of time. Not just one day per record though that's an amazing start. but I say give yourself at least a week per record. there are so many layers and so many elements that are used - and every album is an ALBUM that gives more and more with each listen.
Very nice video. I'm glad you feel so open to come out as a coldplay fan, many would be embarrassed to share such a detail. (especially in the world of music discourse online)
I honestly find the best way to listen is to start from the first album (warts and all) and then progress chronologically. It's amazing to hear a band progress from album, to album, to album, to album...
I'm a little new to Radiohead, but Pablo Honey might be my favorite of their albums
It's one of the most dramatic musical evolutions that ever happened.
Been waiting for this video for ages! Thank you for making this!
What a great deep dive! This is the first time I've seen you, and quite pleased here 😀 Jonny is not only a great musician, he's a great guy. Really accessible for someone so big in the industry. I've actually chatted with him online a few times, just a cool, down to earth guy. So glad you enjoyed them.
Glad to know Jonny is a pleasant person to talk to!
Always sucks to find out that the people you admire are dismissive dicks
Discovering Radiohead is like a gift that has been wrapped beautifully over and over. You unwrap only to find another delight inside. The excitement just keeps coming. I've already learned several songs on acoustic because the chords are just so beautiful. Also, be sure to listen to the Suspiria soundtrack for yet another treat.
Discovered Radiohead within the last month, loved it. I know it’s cliche but jigsaw, no suprises and creep are my favorites
welcome to the fandom.
go find "coke babies" - early stuff that's very sweet.
Jigsaw is one of the best songs ever imo!
Jigsaw is so good! In Rainbows is a treasure
Thank you for making this! Loved it!
The video editing and your delivery is fantastic. It's smooth and purposeful. Content's great too but the presentation is just as good.
Their first album, Pablo Honey, came out when I still watched MTV most afternoons after getting home from school. The visceral riff hit me so hard as a young person (about 14 years old) and I can still picture the music video. The Bends came when I was in High School and OK Computer was my first year in college. They have taken me on their musical journey through life. I've seen them a few times live. They really are one of the greatest bands to ever be. As a guitar player, you should really dig into Ed O'Brien's parts, he is so fascinating and gets overshadowed by Greenwood, but his sense of rhythm and space and feel are just fantastic. If you haven't watched it, his visit to That Pedal Show is great.
we're around the same age, this was my journey, too.
i only ever saw them once and it wasn't a good show. Jonny would later state that three of them were sick and were exhausted (it was their last show of that tour in 2001).
What's cool about Kid A (and Amnesiac) is how it's placed right in the middle of the discography of a rock band that still caters to people that like rock bands. Once you get to know its influences you realize it's not that strange and not even very groundbreaking. But for people who stay in that sphere of guitar music it _is_ pretty groundbreaking and has so often been a gateway into different realms of music, including to me when I was a teenager.
I heard "Everything In Its Right Place" randomly one time and I was hooked. Instantly, I was like "Who the f*** is this?... Radiohead? OK, I'm a Radiohead fan then."
Love the way you put this together man. I was so immersed in your dicsovery journey as well!
In Rainbows is also one of the best Radiohead albums. I’ve been a fan for about 5 or 6 years now and it’s just great.
@@Mess.age_me-Official_MikeCole that username sounds suspicious.
You should watch the Ed O'Brien episode of that pedal show - that's what made me fall in love with the band for real. It gives more context and personality to the listening experiences that follow. Also their live shows on CZcams show you their character and maturity as a band- they don't use backing tracks they build their loops on the fly.
Lastly- joe Edelman on CZcams- he and his band or friends and bands etc do amazing detailed content on Radiohead covers and tune-torials
Nice job on the tones. Absolutely nailed that overdrive sound
You're a fantastic guitarist my friend! This was a joy to watch
In Rainbows is one of the best albums of the 2000s, and it's Radiohead's best album IMO
It's one of the best albums full stop! 👍
Kid A, OK Computer and much better. Not in my opinion just in the historical canon of music.
@eous those are amazing albums. But I feel In Rainbows is their musical peak, it's a mature album that draws from all their previous explorations and synthesizes them into something really solid and cohesive. It kind of features all sides of Radiohead...driving guitar rock (Bodysnatchers), acoustic work (Faust Arp), rhythmic workout (15 Step), paranoid ballad with strings (Nude) and much more, all with electronica judiciously sprinkled in, and some of the strongest lyrics of Thom's career. Basically a perfect album
@@DanFlashes99 That’s why it’s not their best. It’s not as original or groundbreaking since it takes aspects of other albums. It’s a Hail to the Thief but more cohesive. Kid A and OK Computer are leagues above.
@@cactaceous I don't really care which albums you prefer but calling them "leagues above" is hyperbolic. Ok dude lol
I can't imagine trying to get into Radiohead starting now. I would recommend watching them evolve over 30 years and soaking up each album slowly as opposed to cramming the entire experience into a week. But, hey, I'll never to try it your way and you'll never get to try mine. I, on the other hand, DO get to enjoy watching this video about your experience. Thanks. It was a lot of fun to watch.
I loved watching the album reactions lmfao. My fav band
Fantastic video! In Rainbows was also my first intro to RH years ago and then I fell in love with everything they’ve done.
Personally I’ve always found lots of similarities between Muse and Radiohead
But you also shouldn’t forget how strong the production of Radiohead is. I watched a documentary about how analogue a lot of their recording techniques are not to mention their producers
Great band!
You are absolutely spot on. They admitted it in the beginning, then somehow with time they started to hide it (don't know if that is something that their label told them to do. But Dom (the drummer) did say that Bends to them was the best album to have been released, at the time they were starting and making their first album. And you can hear it clearly on Showbiz.
Years ago I had the telecaster plus like Johnny Greenwood I wish I still had that guitar…
Worth about $3k now.
@@thecappyyeah and it fuckin sucks. Don’t have the skill to do the mod with a Squier or something so I’m using a Modern Player Plus Tele which is more expensive but not 3k expensive
@@SoloSlater I did it with a hh player tele, and a router.
Love your passion man, the editing and shooting were amazing! Great video🫡
Amazing video Mike, one of your best! Probably because I love Radiohead so much, but also because your videos are awesome - keep up the great work!
Buckland is rad but Johnny Greenwood is a certified genius. Imagine a band with Thom Yorke and Thom Yorke is the second best musician!? That’s Radiohead. OK Computer was on my discman the day it came out. The Tourist made me cry. I knew I’d just heard the best record of our generation. Love a lot of their records but still to this day Let Down. Paranoid Android we’re game changers. The end of Paranoid the panic the vomit. Back in the day people would be crying in the audience. They are amazing now but in the nineties my god.
Now go check out “The Smile”.
great vid Mike I feel like you really captured the tones
This was awesome, Radiohead Is my favorite band and I’ve been lucky enough to see them 14 times since 2000 -love that you’re Finding this stuff, it just gets better and better forever. Trust me.
I’m GenX and have seen many live shows over the decades. RadioHead is by far the best.
Better than DMB?

Hadn't watched you in a while, but you suddenly popped up on my timeline. Clicked because I thought I'd get a funny sketch, but instead, I got a highly personal, well made video about inspiration. Bravo! I'll definitely be checking out more!
literal same
This should absolutely be a series, never seen a single video of yours before and while Im only familiar with a few of Radioheads songs, this was fascinating to watch, thanks
Thanks for this brother, keep it up. Love your passion and genuine curiosity.

Great advice from your friend starting with in rainbows. Glad you liked radiohead, imo the greatest band of all time. Also definitely my favorite video of yours. Do more radiohead stuff!
This is a great vid! I love when players discover RH!
In Rainbows is my favorite in their catalog.
The one thing you can always count on is every album is an entirely different experience and that’s what people love about this band.
Your sounds were spot on by the way! 👌
Was cool to see you discover them. Nice playing at the end too, nailed the parts. Hope all is well!
It was a joy to see you experience this. Thanks for sharing this with us!
I liked how the video is like a mini documentary your voice is nice to hear, first video that im in. Tnx for this keep going!
i love this! hope to see more radiohead, muse or the strokes from you!!
oh wow this is the best video on this channel. I tried and failed to learn their songs back when I started playing and this inspires me to go back and see how I have improved over the years. Banger video
This is a very thoughtful video. I enjoyed the journey with you.
Really well thought out and well made video! Nice emulation of Johnny’s sound!
Mate! So far THIS is my favourite of all your videos I’ve seen so far. 😀✊🏽
your guitar playing and general perspectives on music are never gonna be the same
I loved this dive into Radiohead. They remain in my top 5 bands of all time. Your interest in their composition and the genius that is Greenwood along with Yorke and his incredible vocals, was much needed. Kudos broither :)
I watched a couple of your vids now. Great narration and pacing. Just Subbed. Cheers.
In Rainbows from the basement is one of the best live shows ever. Came out in like 2007-2008. I watch it at least once a year when I need some inspiration. Highly recommend.
Nice, Mike. As a big Radiohead fan who has a guitar and bass sitting here, neglected, I'm getting inspired!
This was really fun to get this wonderful cultivated experience of someone learning and being joyful about it
lmao I had just started listening to radiohead's full discography this month this video couldn't have had a better timing.
It has come from liking a few songs of them I hear from my stepfather from time to time to being one of my favorite bands ever...
It's pretty nice that you talked about Radiohead. A guitar player that I admire reacting to one of my favourite bands!
Love your videos! Glad you discovered them they changed my life!
My friend in high school around 2004 used to say: Coldplay is the band I play in the car when I forget my Radiohead albums. I love them both but that always stuck with me as hilarious, especially at the time since Coldplay has gone way beyond where they started
gotta give kid a more than one run through... its probably my favorite, because each time I listen to it I hear something I didn't hear before.
All I Need is one of my all time favorite songs ever! So glad you had that reaction
You should check out their live at Astoria gig from 1994, even back then they were absolutely superb. In fact the version they did of My Iron Lung was so good they even used it on The Bends with re-recorded vocals. Well worth a watch!
Fantastic playing and great video!
Great guitar work and love your new-found passion for Radiohead. They convey the angst of existence and poetry of the soul better than any other band :)
This is amazing! A real treat watching someone who obviously loves music discovering one of the greatest bands of all time.
Kid A is my favorite album from Radiohead. From Optimistic to the end of Morning Bell is one of the most beautiful continuous pieces of music to me to this day.
That was awesome! I’m really happy you are delving into Radiohead.
Amazing Video, I'm definetly going to listen to their albums like you did! :)
Just is my all time favorite Radiohead song and honestly in my top 5 favorite songs of all time. GOD. Nothing feels better than that opening riff and that END RIFF OMG. Seeing that live on the In Rainbows tour was LIFE CHANGING. Love love love this video! Radiohead is my favorite band!
This video is awesome, thank you!
Playing the No Surprises riff without a Rickenbacker is like showering with a raincoat on.
Wow, what a video to see. Radiohead one of my fave bands. Played guitar for years. Never taken pedals etc seriously. Need to do the work. Inspiring, thanks!!
Radiohead at a wet and muddy Glastonbury, 1997, doing mostly (perhaps exclusively), their OK Computer mateiral, was one of the very best concerts I've ever witnessed. The wet muddy cold was utterly forgotten after the first few bars of music.
I've seen them live a few times now & I have to say Karma Police in person, with a full crowd singing along is absolutely beautiful & so moving.
I’ve always thought cold play were “the poor man’s Radiohead” - would love to see you do a walkthrough of their catalog from a guitarist perspective. Price me wrong!
The more u see radiohead/TheSmile live the more you realize how great jonny actually is and how he keeps getting better and better
AS somebody who's felt bad about sort of really coming back/actually getting into all of Radiohead's discography after sort of growing up with them and feeling late to really appreciating them when I feel like I should have earlier, to see someone be almost completely new to them and fall in love the same way I did is rlly cool to see.
Gl on the journey. rh is a very special band. with time you'll notice how much of heart and originality in every song they make
Been waiting for this video for a long time now… didn’t disappoint
