- The historic Green Mountain Lookout is one of Washington's all-time finest hikes. From dense woods to wide-open meadows to panoramic views, it just doesn't get much better than this. The lookout was built in 1933 and used for many years as a fire lookout. In 1987, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Once on top, the views are world-class. Glacier Peak dominates the southern skyline, along with Mount Pugh, Sloan Peak, Del Campo, Three Fingers, White Chuck, Whitehorse, and many others. Mount Baker is visible to the north, along with the Sisters and the Ptarmigan Traverse group. There is lots of history surrounding this lookout; it took a special congressional and presidential act to be preserved. For us, there was no better place to relax and spend the first day of summer marveling at nature's wonders.

Nice. Did this hike several times back in the 70's and 80's, but not before mid-August when the snow is gone and the flowers are maxing. The lookout was manned in season back then. One year, the lookout guy (his name was "Lightbulb" Winders) was painting the exterior white. The Autumn meadow colors in late September to early October are great, too. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful memories from the 70s and 80s! It's fascinating to hear about the changes over the years and the vibrant autumn colors. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
That looked like a great hike and nice seeing the bear and the marmot too. First time I heard a marmot whistle I thought it was someone blowing a rescue whistle. I asked a passing hiker about it and they said it was a marmot nearby which I spotted a bit later.
Thank you! It was a wonderful hike, and seeing the bear and marmot was a highlight.
Is that the lookout Gary Snider, and Jack Karoack the poets, sat back in the 60s? ❤❤❤❤❤
I believe that is Sourdough Mountain, it's in the same area though!
Thanks for the video! How was the road to get there?
Thanks for the great video. A beautiful trek! I’m thinking of making this hike myself and am curious when was this video recorded?
This video was recorded three days ago, so the conditions you see are very recent. I hope you have a wonderful hike!
Wonderful! Thank you.
@@hikeart Thanks for giving the date of the hike. I use you to plan my hikes as I chase the snow level. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I'm headed to Europe and doing another Camino so will miss the cascades until late August. I guess it will then be the North Cascades.
