  • Sheltering from the rain under a tree in the middle of the night, a man learned that getting wet was the least of his problems, now faced with going blind. One of the world’s most dangerous organisms, unexpectedly a tree, is extremely toxic. The fruit is poison, the sap is extremely dangerous, and touching it is the last mistake you could ever make. Let’s get into it.

You're not supposed to shelter under a tree anyways during a storm because of a thing called lightning. Plus hiding under a tree isn't really going to keep you dry. It can provide some protection from the wind, but that opens the door for another threat. By that, I mean getting crushed by the falling tree.

If most of Florida wasn't artificially drained marshland and/or bland suburban developments, we could have some pretty interesting and useful garden forests or orchards kinda like how the ancient Mayans had with lots of useful plants grown around their villages like Breadnut and spinach tree.

I'm pretty sure it's in the Everglades and Keys, although manchineel is endangered in its Florida range. Elsewhere in the Caribbean and Central America, manchineel is a "least concern" species.
The Calusa of SWFL likely had access to manchineel back in the day, as it is highly suspected (although not completely verified) that Juan Ponce de León died from an arrow poisoned with manchineel sap. I'm pretty sure I read that this confrontation took place around Charlotte Harbor, though I'm relatively sure manchineel doesn't grow that far north anymore.
