- The Digital Markets Act in the EU has caused widespread changes in big tech at companies like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Meta. Recently, Apple banned Epic Games in the EU and possibly broke the law by violating DMA.

"Core Technology? There is a tax for that"
This is the reason I switched to Linux. Apple used to really support third-party developers, but Jobs shut that down soon after being reinstated as CEO. They moved everything behind a "Apple Developer" paywall and charged a 300usd fee for lifetime membership, on top of an annual 100usd fee for access to their docs - the same docs they had been giving away for free for over a decade. Within 6months, they removed the lifetime fee and kept the annual fee, but it was far too late. I was the biggest Apple fanboy but I feel they stabbed me in the back so fuck 'em. I switched to Linux and never looked back. I used to be able to build computers out of literal trash that could run linux and Apple was charging an arm and a leg for just the privilege of saying you like them.
I hope that one day, Apple's "it's a privilege to dev for us" mentality bites them HARD.

That external tax of 0.5 EUR per yearly install over 1M is crazy! Didn't Apple learned "something" about what happened to Unity last year? just a few months ago!
there is a big difference though. with unity, they were going to force people who were already using their product to pay these fees, while apple's use of it would have been brand new and couldnt retroactively screw somebody over.
@fay7158 but consoles are subsidized to be cheaper, while everything in apple world is overpriced especially when they're just made in china
@@chinesesparrowsnot really, Nintendo makes money off every switch sold, and so do many consoles after their first half life. Meanwhile, we have the Steam Deck with a very tight price and it's running a Linux distro without any limitations, you can even install windows.

Yeah guys its been reversen simce EU commision launched an investigation into the matter
@@meroshango9603oh damn bro I forgot just don't sell your product to 50% of consumers totally reasonable business model
@@meroshango9603 It's not just about not using Apple. This massively affects developers that want their apps available across all users (including iOS and Android). A simple way of achieving this is a PWA, where it is cross platform and works everywhere out of the box without having to learn multiple programing languages.
If Apple bans PWAs, then the iOS users will have limited access to the PWAs.
Imagine this, let's say CZcams was a PWA and not an actual app in the App Store. CZcams is pretty popular right? Everyone uses it regardless of platform.
If Apple all of a sudden bans PWAs, iOS users will have limited access to them in their own iOS devices, including CZcams.
CZcams devs would then need to hire programmers who know how to code for iOS which would incur extra costs for the development and maintenance of the application. Not to mention the extra fees from the app store and the added business logic in maintaining the same app in multiple programing languages for multiple platforms.
I'm talking about a massive application here just to somewhat prove a point, but other smaller apps face the same issue with this ban.
So, it's not just about "if you don't like Apple, don't use it". For devs that want their app available for everyone, they don't exactly have a choice on the matter unfortunately...

God what a god damn utopia we would be in if we never gave up so much control like we did by letting apps happen.
It never ceases to amaze me when software businesses forget that developers are deathly allergic to scalable liability. Even small fees, if out of our control, can scale to unbounded liabilities. Apple and Unity forgot this, and now they're both poison.
How would you define scalable liability?
@@SicMundusss If a user can do something to force money out of a developer's pocket then it follows they could repeat that and linearly scale the cost.
Unity would have allowed each user to cost the developer 20c every time the user installed the game. I could just bot farm that and bankrupt rival developers.
Apple was going to do the same thing for side-loaded apps but with 50c.

Only Apple fanbois getting high off their own farts would see themselves and Apple as heroes.
Gotta admire Apple's dedication of funding EU healthcare by going out of their way of violating laws and paying the fees.
And that's the main reason I don't use Apple products. Good hardware? Probably. Great experience? Maybe. But Apple's idea that by owning the hardware they can ultimately control the software is a big no-go.
The only good thing is their hardware. Their user experience, at least on MacOS, is horrible. It sucks.
bro I have a mac and damn linux is way better (gnome or plasma interface at least)

For the people and governments in the EU, this is a win-win situation. Seeing Apple (and other monopolies) suffer is just a beautiful side effect. The 2 possibilities are:
1. The companies pull away from the EU market, and then they will lose a massive amount of money. But that's not even the best part: the EU will get rid of a monopoly. This will allow for other, better companies to take their place, which will actually bring in more money than before, since smaller companies actually have to compete to make a better product. Not to mention the fact that removing american centrism from our culture and our devices is a huge success.
2. The companies bow down to the EU. Life quality in the EU drastically increases, while still keeping the economy growing.
