    This is exciting. The most frustrating part of quality filament is paying 2-3x the price for a product that is only slightly better. It would be nice to see more competitors in this space bringing the price down while showing people what they’ve been missing

    I for 1 would like to see you all make the filament for the community. Like you said, this could be a win win for the community. High quality filament from a company that makes it MAINLY for them selves but also to sell to people like us who want/need good quality at a more affordable price. I have just got started into 3D printing, have 5 machines so far and of coarse still learning. For people like myself, this would be a huge game changer in my mind. I can get top quality filament at a more affordable price is great.... That being said, I would like to see maybe PLA+, mainly because it has a good strength quality like a PETG but also have the ease of printing like regular PLA. Kind of a best of both worlds. Obviously in a large amount of colors, not just black red, white, Blue and Grey. Looking forward to seeing what you all come up with and if you even go forward with this idea. Please keep us updated.

We aren't the biggest users in quantity but as we print prosthetics for donation to those in need a good quality PC blend possibly with CF or a good nylon for a better price would sure help improve lives! Consistent is big for us, even in PETG. Domestic sourcing of raw materials as much as possible would really tip things your direction from folks like us.

    I'd really love to see PLA and ABS refills in 1 or 3 kg flavors for SlantSpools or MasterSpools. I don't know if you're currently making them for use in-house, so I can understand if the price isn't any lower than pre-spooled if you decide to offer them. Even still, I'm more than happy to buy them if it means I'm not needlessly bringing another plastic or cardboard spool into existence.

    I would. We have one Ultimaker (2.85mm), and our daughter has 4 or 5 Ultimakers (again 2.85) for supporting her STEM classes in a local elementary school. And she prints a lot. I am interested in basic colors, black/white. She is more into 'colors for kids' and shiny, for interesting things for the school kids and for her 3d printing club she started for serious kids. Others in her school do use 1.75 but not in as much volume.

    I snip off the tail of the filament that is attached to the spool before use. Never had an issue with printers trying to eat the spool. I wouldn't care for a "better" spool system.
    Biggest issue: filament color that conforms to Pantone or RAL codes. I need RAL 6018, RAL 7035 and RAL 5004. Not impossible to find if I'm willing to commit to a 2000Kg order, which I'm not.
    Never had a color consistency issue with a brand, only between brands. Which is why I stick to 1 brand for 1 color.
    Medium issue: messy spool windings.
    Minor issue: getting 3, 5 and 10Kg spools other than on special order for enough different base colors. Often all you find is black, white and if you're lucky red.
    Major issue: (as a hobbyist) hard/impossible to find good quality PACF (PA12, PA6) that isn't made of useless milled CF dust but from chopped CF strands for a "reasonable" price.
    Major issue: most brands, even "good" ones, barely publish any datasheet about their filaments. Getting accurate data from them is like pulling teeth. They're not even consistent between their own website, the packaging and the label on the spools themselves.

    Maybe you could make it different by selling refills with a "stl" printable spool so you don't have to source spools. It would be okay if you have limited colors. Idk maybe cheap reliable filament made mainly to be painted.
    There's so many way to make things differently.
    Either way, you'll definitely tackle the actual pricing/marketing if you manage to make it happen.

    I run a small farm of 8, hopefully expanding to 30 or so by this summer. My biggest issue would be colors not being in stock. I pay about 13$ currently for petg and a bit less for abs. Also the packaging. To get the price down sell them a case at a time 8 individual kg spools without separate boxes inside boxes. Maybe your value prop could be filament specifically designed for farms.

    If you offered a small set of consistently available colors in PETG (and PLA) as SlantSpool refills, you would be the only place I would buy my working filament. Too many good things - good quality from people who know the needs of filament for 3D printing, U.S. made and fulfilled. I would expect an upcharge for the extrusion, processing, and handling process just so this is worth your time and the flood of regular customers you'd get from offering this as a product.

    Call it slant simply black pla (most forgiving). 12.99$ for 1kg spool, 29.99 for 3kg, if you buy over 100$ then free shipping. Don't guarantee color, but guarantee accuracy and reliability. Most first prints in hobbies, people don't care about color. If that takes off sell more colors and options.

    I would suspect the main issue will be availability, if you do create a really good quality filament a 10$, then I don't see how you could keep up with the demand.
    As someone with a small 3D-printing business this is a major issue. For me it's more expensive to design for multiple sources of filament rather than going with a single consistently available filament producer.
    Since you're trying to incentivise people to move to Slant3D with their Etsy shop and products, it might be a good idea to at least try to guarantee availability for the people making the move. This would allow them to design for your filament and get closer to what you will be producing at home when testing.

    I would definitely like to see a company like yours produce a product you actually use and possibly provide larger rolls so that those of use who want to do very large prints can do so. I think it would also put your name on the map in the community if you could reduce costs of printing. Other companies have done this strategy before such as xiaomi with their cellphones, they sell them almost at cost, and then have a wide range of other products that people will try because of their cellphone brand.
    I would also suggest investigating a way to make white filament without Titanium in it, as this would be a one of a kind product as far as I am aware of.
    I mainly use white, grey, blue, red and black, but have sense switched away from printing white, after your video on the TO

    I don't really understand why it isn't more competitive, it's not that small or new of a market anymore is it? And especially since inflation makes people more price driven consumers.
    Anyway, I found this video because I googled "We need a People's Filament Manufacturer". This is the conclusion I came to after I saw your completely spot on video about filament prices. I want to buy from a cooperatively owned and operated domestic manufacturer (even if this made it difficult to be the cheapest). So many brands try to signal that they 'care about their employees' etc, but there's few who actually make that commitment real. They don't always get the broad support or success they deserve, but there are companies that find a way to check most of the boxes.
    I also wish every serious hobbyist had access to the ability to at least have their printing scrap recycled (even if they didn't directly receive the recylced filament). I have often considered building a 'Precious Plastic' plastic grinder and filament extruder, or pellet-extruding hot end printer, because I would feel way better having a circular lifecycle for reusable scrap material.

    Really anything that's significantly more impact resistant than ordinary PLA. There are some great engineering blends out there, but the price premium for tougher blends can be shockingly high given that the raw materials are still fairly cheap. I'm not picky about color. Things that have worked fine for me thus far: tough PLA, PETG, tough PETG, PCTG, and easy-print (CoPA) Nylon. Ordinary PLA is a bit too brittle for my projects, but a lot of the other options work fine. Some low-cost tough PLA would be great.

When we are doing a long print and we run out of filament mid print, replacing the spool with a filament from the same manufacture and the same color never works. The PLA/PETG/ABS market has been more-or-less saturated from the low end all the way to the high end. However, where the market is open is the engineering and industrial filaments, like the Polycarbonates, Nylons, etc... You really only have a handful of suppliers that are US-based and all are extremely high cost compared to the raw pellets. If you want to start a filament line, those would be good areas to target.

    • @slant3d

    • @fjlaboratories
      @fjlaboratories Před rokem

      @@slant3d I agree that it's incredibly stagnant. We haven't seen anything that would bring a "wow" or any reason to move away from established suppliers at all, in the last three-or-so years.
      I do wonder if PLA/PETG is the target market though, where would Slant3D slot in. We have "low-cost" options like LLLMax or the various "chinamazon" brands covering the $11-20 marketplace, moderate-value shops like VoxelPLA, and a handful of others covering the $20-35 range and high-end USA-based shops like 3DXTech/MatterHackers covering the $35+ market.
      While the quality certainly improves (and I can see Slant3D being the de-facto quality standard, if done well) at higher ranges, to the average hobbyist with 1 or 2 printers out of a garage, the budget line is "good enough." To a print shop like us, I think they value some different things though, like consistency, reliability, traceability, and a robust supply chain - so we gravitate to more expensive solutions.
      Now, if Slant3D can offer the "upper-echelon experience" that the higher-end solutions like 3DXTech offer at LLLDMax prices, that would be "wow"!

Really, just the basics and not a whole rainbow pallet of colours. Most importantly NO SPOOLS!!!! Sell by length instead of weight and just the ship raw roll that I can load onto my own spools that I already have. Just a simple product at a low price. Buy direct from the manufacturer and use the exact same product they use themselves. You could even go one step further and offer a "scrap" line where all your off-cuts, failed extrusions and failed prints are reground, blended and extruded without any concern for colour. Would love to be able to get color true filament and also new options for color or color blends. I could see myself buying a dozen or more rolls a month especially under $15 for quality filament

  • @DylanHavener

    I think pla and petg are a good start. Personally, I'm looking for ways to get a quality spool of PLA for less than $15 and then of course bulk pricing.
    $25-30 for a spool of pla is a crime

  • @Spice__King

    I'm interested but probably also not your target customer. I'm just a hobbyist printer who lives in Canada who prints for fun, family and friends. That said, assuming shipping is not totally stupid to get here with a bulk order, the price is still really attractive to me up here. I'd probably end up doing 10-20 kg worth of filament to be worth the cost of shipping in assorted colors to build out my selection, probably want more 1 kg spools for more color selection (eyeing getting a MMU type setup for multi color prints), but I could be convinced to be ready for bigger spools for colors I use a lot of. I'm largely expecting you to want a higher price/kg on 1 kg spools over 3 kg spools, after all, it's 3x the human work, packaging, etc.
    I much prefer USPS for shipping as they hand over to Canada Post at the border and don't ask for an arm and a leg for getting it through customs and just ask for the taxes owed only. FedEx and UPS have often assessed themselves of fairly high brokerage fees, I've seen like 50% of the value on top of the taxes owed at times. I don't live close enough to just pop into the right government building to file the paperwork myself as a receiver (I'd burn a whole afternoon on a weekday and a tank of gas to do it), so I'd happily pay you a $10-15 premium for you to file that paperwork (which you'd template down to filling in the quantity and shipping details), and collect Canadian taxes compared to FedEx/UPS demanding what ever they feel like to figure out that customs code is for plastic filament and for the privilege of paying my owned taxes, probably like $60-80 knowing them on a large order.

    The idea is great! Big thumb up for u guys, considering something like that needs balls!!(If ur main reason is not to make a fortune on it as u said) Anyway, in my opinion u would not be able to hold up with the demand. Just when I see a sale for 10% and the stuff is sold out in days. Just imagine if you cut it by half. People would go crazy.

    Make a brand. Subscription service. Send a free small .25kg roll to any active subs for the newest product so they can stay hyped and test the newest product. Send any new people 1 free .25kg of any color for the first month free(Gets rid of back stock, and they must require a new phone number per account so you don't get scammed), when they sub, give em one of the newest.

    If you can offer cheap bulk PLA/PETG I think you can really make the market move. 90% of the time i don't care about the appearance of the plastic because im just trying to churn out functional parts yet I have to pay this premium for quality plastic. Even if you just sold reject reels of plastic that didnt meet spec for color or strength or diameter but would still work fine for the average home gamer that would be big. Also, consider ditching spools for extra savings. I would be more than happy to spool up loose filament if it meant saving a couple bucks per kg

    • @MrKaloszer
      @MrKaloszer Před rokem

      @@slant3d It's not about designing toward a particular machine really, it's more of a compatibility thing. It's minor adjustment at planning stage that would allow you to have another earning stream open - because if that spool of yours would be wider than the amount of - 46-70mm, and the diameter exceeded 200mm they would be incompatible with the ams - it would be a no-no for that part of the casual market that'd be most incentivized to buy cheap filament. I'm not a fanboy, just that it's one thing that I see shook up the 3d printer market and opened the hobby up to a lot of people who don't want to mess around with bedslingers and spend a lot of money. Anker had made a similar machine (well function wise) - so it's still not set in stone what will end up being the next ender.

    I go thru about 10-12 rolls of filament per month and would love to try your filament. My top complaints of current filaments would be:
    Cost, poor packaging, (mainly vacuum seals getting broken during shipping.... it really sucks having to dry brand new filament before getting to print) Tangled spools ,

    • @slant3d
      @slant3d  Před rokem

      Thanks for the feedback. We definitely would be producing larger spools, since that is the format we utlize in or print farms. But those large spools would not fit in the AMS.

    • @Antrim3d
      @Antrim3d Před rokem

      Correct, bulk spools won't fit in the AMS. Apologies for any misunderstanding, as my thoughts are many, but don't equally apply to all my machines. For clarification, I want my cake and eat it too.😊 I need bulk spools for my machines that are able to feed from an independent spool holder... though I would still use bulk abs, pla, and nylon on my Bambu lab X1C... just feed it thru the back of machine for larger bulk jobs... at any rate, I do realize I can't have ALL my wishes met. 👍🏻 Thanks again for replying back. Much appreciated. Whatever path y'all decide to take, I wish y'all success!

    Can you please discuss the counter-offer by DDD at 24.10? Frankly, I see more long-term gain from a technological-level merger of Stratasys and Nano Dimension than Stratasys with DDD. The fact that Stratasys wants to add DM into the mix is rather strange, as DM really doesn't have much to offer either technologically, or managerially. Why would Stratasys even want DM? (Yes, I've read why, but it sounds hollow). Additionally, I believe DDD desperately wants Stratasys merely to remain relevant, as they too have little to offer comparatively. I'd welcome your thoughts. Thank you.

    Alrighty. Well the biggest things that have directed my purchasing is first the consistency of it as in having random under extrusion and I hate brittle PLA, the second is color. I use polymaker, polylite pla and petg, because great consistency and I really like their pigments. Their price is about the most I am willing to shell out, because I know there are other companies with amazing pigments and quality filament like atomic and filimentum and I am sure others, but I just cannot stomach the price. So maybe have some mainstream colors like white, black, red and blue to keep it simple then do some sprint runs of some really awesome colors?

Imo the biggest hurdle will be keeping it in stock. Prob. The only time I wish I could enter my email to be updated when released and in stock. I like the idea of meging it under the same name as your printing company, you would be doing the community a good service and I believe that recognition would translate more efficiently.
