    It should be noted that the jabs change if you do them after a light or heavy attack. After a light they are punches but after a heavy the centurion reverses his grip and hits the opponent with the but of his weapon, 8ts just an animation difference but I think it is a nice detail.
    Edit:I just went and tested it in-game and the animation only happens after your 2nd heavy which is the one centurion changes into reverse grip, your 1st heavy does not change from the regular jab which makes sense from an animation standpoint.

    Love how this video understands that at the end of the day its still just a video game and Cent still looks like he can fight a lion and knock it out. Like yeah some of his moves are borderline not useful but any man that gets hit by a Cent's charge jab are going down like a sack of potatoes. There was an interesting theory that Cent use to run around with a shield, if you look at his stance and match that with a shield placement it looks almost right.
    Also that skit of you getting hit and then looking at your hands and deciding to run the ones is funny, but I have a feeling that its exactly how Cent came to be. Your home is destroyed, your people are scattered into the winds, and your the last remaining vestiges of a great kingdom... so fuck it, if your going down, you'll show them why your people's guardians were fearless, fuck the shield, you don't have anything to protect anymore, you would use your sword to cut down your would be enemies and your fist to grind them to dust. If you really are one of the last of the Romans, then show them Roman steel, show them each step, punch, slash and kick you do comes from a man that strikes like an eagle and has a heart of an empire. Show them a CENTURIAN'S pride and scream out to the cruelty of the world, INCREDIBILIS, ET TIAM! ...so yeah, that's my head-canon lol.

  • @NoForksGiven
    @NoForksGiven Před 3 měsíci

    Great video but a few things I wanted to explain. IRL the moves wouldn't work that's true, but they do work in game for a number of reasons:
    1. Cent is a very arrogant fighter. He does shout "I AM INCREDIBLE" and "I AM UNCONTROLLABLE" when charging attacks. He doesn't use a shield because he thinks he doesn't need one
    2. Speaking of charging, the game will magnetize you to enemies if they fail to dodge your attack properly. In some cases, this can cause Cent to spin almost 180 degrees if one of the more agile heroes dodges behind him. This is done on purpose. If you thought he was going to throw an uncharged punch, he has the option to fully charge it and track your movement.
    3. Funnily enough, punching and charging attacks don't work irl for the same reason. The enemy can hit you while you're winding up. Howeber, as this is a video game, there's a limit on how fast the enemy can attack. If they block or get hit by an attack, their character will stagger back for so long, it's is impossible for them to hit you first. This is called "frame advantage" and is also an intended game mechanic. The only way to get out of this loop is to successfully block, dodge or parry Cent.
    4. Eagle's Fury is just as reckless in game as well. You can't feint it, meaning it really is like giving your enemy a free opening if they dodge or parry it. However, it's not meant to be used blindly. It's meant to chase a fleeing opponent. Due to the stiff movements in game, by the time you unlock and start running after an enemy, they'll be too far away to catch. However if you use Eagle's Fury, you'll jump so far you'll hit them.
    5. The kick is just a reference to the movie 300. Cent gets a lot of movie references actually. The man is a show off, what can we say. In fact, he gets more references to gladiator films than the actual gladiator class. The gladiator class is more historically accurate though.
    6. While true, if Cent guardbreaks the correct thing to do irl would be to stab the enemy but that's not how guardbreaks work in game. You don't get to keep attacking just because you successfully landed it. It only gives you one attack, or several unique attacks if you're a certain hero. The peacekeeper gets 3 quick stabs. As such, Cent 3 head bonks is how capitalise on the very small window you get to damage the enemy. In the 4v4 modes, he can unlock the ability to let his punches, kicks and head bonks do damage. With this ability, it's more effective to do the bonks than get the 1 free stab. Same for his parry into knee strike. It also does damage with this ability, meaning you should always knee strike into light attack after a heavy parry.
    It's important to remember that these design decisions were made strictly to work in game with its own rules. It can be fun to analyze if they'd work in a real fight but don't forget it's a video game first, historical recreation second

    Funny enough I could see Centurion beating Gladiator in a Realistic fight. Sure the single Gladius is problematic but at least the Gladius is designed to be lethal. The same cant really be said about the Trident. The Trident wasnt really made with warfare in mind. Sure Gladiator has the range advantage over Centurion. However if Gladiator wanted to get a kill. He would have to be extremely precise with that Trident. Not to mention the possibility of that Trident getting stuck due to the prongs.

    • @ContuberniumSPQR
      @ContuberniumSPQR  Před 3 měsíci +2

      The historical account actually supports what you wrote. Retiarius gladiator class that fought with a trident was so OP, that a new special Murmillo class had to be developed to counter him. Murmillo was based on the roman legionary , weilding a short gladius, a big shield and a special helmet, that would not be affected by Retiarius' net.
      The trident though is a great weapon. Not used in war so much, but leathal as hell!

    • @Blackstonelegion
      @Blackstonelegion Před 3 měsíci +1

      Like I said you'd have to be vary precise with the Trident if you wanted it to be lethal. Plunging the Trident into someone's throat for example will definitely secure the kill. But bare in mind that the Trident was more of a fishing tool than an actual weapon. Not to mention that it was actually vary rare for Gladiators to fight each other to the death. That's not to say that Fights to the death never happened. But majority of Gladiators were slaves and if your Gladiators die they would be vary expensive to replace. Part of the reason why the Trident is a perfect weapon for the Arena. Its flashy enough to keep the Audiences attention while not being particularly lethal unless you manage to hit Vital organs with it.
      Also the Secutor is the Gladiator who is often paired up against the Retiarius. The Secutor would often wear scaled armor and wield a sword and shield and the fight between a Retiarius and a Secutor is ment to represent the battle between a Fisherman and the fish. With the Retiarius being the Fisherman and the Secutor being the fish. Hence the Secutor wearing scaled armor.

    I would like to point out few things regarding guardbreaks. Just like all character centurion gets a free heavy on guardbreak. The three jabs to the head you can do on guardbreak arent always mandatory you can just do one or two and throw them against the wall, so cent actually has variety of options from guardbreak. Other than that everything was pretty much accurate and you earned a sub.

  • @taramaforhaikido7272

    You can beat an enemy with a shorter range weapon. It won't happen by just rehearsing it. It would requier conviction, drive and no hesitation. Which is not what happens in the vid. To pull it off one would need to be either mobile (somehow avoid attacks) or have the strength to hold a small weapon against a big one. You can also use the enemies strength against them and go with being knocked back when blocking with the smaller weapon. Which is a lot more difficult to do compared to just blocking with a shield. The trick would be to get under the enemies reach somehow. Spear tip? Point. Behind that tip? Not so pointy.

    I will say though, the argument of getting stabbed while you're charging a move isn't something the game forgets, you will get stabbed while doing them if you never feint. You pretend to be super telegraphed and fake them out to bait a counter attack.

    14:10 Eh, when it was announced they where going for realism but they decided they can be more creative if they go with grounded non realism.

    Wasted potential. Shield would have been great but I kinda think the devs at the time wanted something more unique and balancing. Giving a man a door in game without detructible shield physics or tabling would have be hard to balance. Counter idea, the gladius needs to be paired with a defensive implement in order to work well, there are extremely few projective users in for honor. Centurion's are for breaking sticks on the backs of rowdy legionaries. The Centurion's should have dual wielded gladius and a club. Most of the light club work with work as parries, the gladius would exploiting sucessfull parries, heavy attacks would the Centurion's trying the high risk of braining someone with his discpline device.

    "[side dodge attack] would be difficult against an opponent with a shield."
    "Boy, you telling me." - every hero with a side dodge attack.
    Edit: "I hope we haven't come off as super critical of the game"
    Oh, don't worry, the playerbase is plenty of that. Also, as a kensei main, trust me when I say I'm painfully aware how unrealistic the game can be. Even as a shameless weeb I know none of the samurai weapons save nobushi's spear and Shugoki's kanabo would help much against most of the armors unless you're only doing thrusts. Let's not even get into Kensei's forward dodge heavy using a FLIPPING JUMP and one where they move through the air SLOWER than gravity should allow.
