Why did they keep a seemingly useless Pink Diamond around for thousands of years if not for some specific purpose? Is it possible she provided resources that didn't just help with the number of gems being created but also the powers they have?

Ruby isn't the best Gem, I honestly think that Sapphire is one of the best gems, because she can see the future and see a battle, but honestly she's my birthstone so i love her even more.
Pink diamond has healing powers, and empathy. We are pretty sure pearl used to belong to another court than pink diamond’s, and she can shapeshift.
@Purple Citrine I'm pretty sure it was confirmed White, Blue and Yellow all had a hand in making our pearl- Pink's guidance was out of the question- they did give her Pearl for her to be 'guided on to the right path' in a sense so,, I believe that alone should give a sense that all gems can shapeshift

Nile Young no pink did not have empathy. She had good intentions but in the end put a lot through suffering like spinel.
An interesting theory. I personally believe that Pink's Diamond ability has to do with the 'soul'. We know that Yellow's powers are physical, Blue's are emotional, and White's are mental. So, what is the glue that holds that all together? The soul, and that's Pink. We know through Steven that she is able to possess things and establish mental connections with other gems. The movie brings up the theory that her unique power is to rejuvenate people, which makes sense based on the fact that the rejuvenator is pink. Possession and rejuvenation both remove the sense of self, which can be synonymous with soul in this case. In addition, when Blue, Yellow, and Steven heal Centi/Nephrite in LFHTH, Steven allows Centi to get her emotions under control and speak full sentences, which could also allude to the soul.

@@orbitingsaturn3683 That's a good point you got there. Something to point out is that Garnet once described corruption as "a tear in the fabric of [your] mind". Since White's powers are mental, it's logical that she's one that can make uncorruption permanent. ...Which is why Blue, Yellow, and Steven couldn't uncorrupt Nephrite on their own, since it's White's powers they needed to fix that "tear in the fabric of [your] mind".
This could also explain how spinel is stupid good at manipulating her body and is one of the only gems who is pure pink in the series

that was really early in the shows production, but this doesn't contradict that. What ist he resource missing? rebecca sugar literally said that the resource shortage is a lack of pink diamonds oils. So either shape shifting comes from pink diamond OR it comes from the amount of oils you get from diamonds regardless of color.

I may not have stated it clearly enough in the video but I did clarify that if yellow is the source of weapons then that means even seemingly pure blue gems like AGAT will still have a drop of yellow just for weapons. The same would be done for Peridot. This was my implication when I asked what resource might be missing if she is already made up of mostly yellow and blue

And Rebecca also said in a interview that gems takes the colors of the oils used on them: If a gems is Purple, she's made with Pink and Blue essence. So it would imply that even if she is made up of just blue and yellow to get the color that she would still have just a few drops of pink for the powers alone. otherwise a resource shortage of pink oil wouldnt affect peridots at all
This is really interesting, if the Diamonds are necessary resource-producers then for the upcoming season some gem villains would have an economic incentive to remove Steven. Steven won't produce this diamond oil for the expansion of the gem empire, so they would need force. This would add a very interesting layer to the story.
I mean they could probably just steal his bath water on the down low and get the diamond oil.

true. i knew that the diamonds have other things to care about than just being a horrible leader.
they sort of weren't. they had a purpose, to lead gems in their specific way. gems that fell out of line weren't easy to just get back in line, they either had to rejuvinate them which would take way too long, or straight up shatter them. Especially when a rogue gem like rose/pink "shattered" a diamond they really had to go full swing on rules and enforcing them strongly.
I think Pink's purpose on homeworld was just heal and protect other gems. Also, i think she's might be more powerful than White, Blue and Yellow, as we saw in Change your mind. She either didn't knew her limits or she didn't how to control them

In s5, there is a flashback where yellow diamond shape-shifts and wouldn't you consider the destabilizers in aquamarine's ship were an extension of blue diamond and same with spinels rejuvenator, both of which do the same as yellow diamonds destabilization
that wasn't a flash back, it was a dream. While it was based off of real memories the entire thing was surreal and trippy. It wasn't meant to be literal, it was supposed to say that no matter how far away yellow seemed, she always found a way to keep an eye on pink. The destabilizers are just technology, they don't need to belong to any gem in particular I don't think.
I like this theory but it also makes me wonder about the zircons, why make them two colors?
Different courts. They seem to try and match colors to courts whenever possible.

The zircons served as lawyers in the court and therefore represented their diamonds' cases. I like to think that the zircons were some kind of allegorical technique the show used to represent each diamond's case. See how Blue zircon was panicking and trying to save Steven (as Blue diamond also kind of didn't believe he had done it) and yellow Zircon persecuting him with speed (as Yellow Diamond wants Blue to move on from this as soon as possible, etc).
A fun fact: Cubic zirconia are also considered to be simulated diamonds, so it makes sense that these would be the gems they chose to represent the Diamonds in a court

krombii yo i agree spinel’s ability is more like elasticity than shapeshifting. Also it is shown throughout the show that for a gem to shapeshift they’ll have to convert a part of their body to light energy to any form they desire, whereas spinel does it without the need of light conversion.

Sorry but no... Pink Diamond being the only Shape Shifting diamond is silly. You say “yellow has electricity power” “blue diamond has emotional powers” “so Pink Diamond’s exclusive power must be pink diamond’s power”.. Um... Pink Diamond’s exclusive power is healing and stuff. We know that every gem is a hologram light with a gem as it’s source. Therefore, they can bend light just like Pink... just like every other gem. If it’s complicated to explain and you gotta take huge leaps, then it just isn’t gonna be likely true.

I didn't neglect to mention her existing exclusive powers because it makes this more plausible. On the contrary, the fact that she does have exclusive powers strengthens the theory that she'd have more. I just knew that literally everyone knew about her powers and it didn't need to be said here.
Without even watching I can tell you that Pearl explicitly says EVERY gem has shapeshifting abilities.

I think that pink diamond is the gem that is responsible for giving other gems their abilities, or has a very large part in that process, not just shape shifting which in of itself is an ability. With peridot we can speculate that she used Stevens toothbrush, Steven is pink diamond, and in “too short to ride” she found out that she had the ability to telepathically control metal...that is not a coincidence. We also need to consider that both white and pink were missing since white hadn’t left her head in a millennia...I think yellows contribution is physical, blues contribution is emotional, pink represents presence so she gives the gems their abilities, and white represents brilliance and makes sure that all gems are perfect. Pink was way more important than we give her credit for!!!!!!!

Maybe Pink Diamond was originally meant to act like an undercover boss, to infiltrate colonies and make sure things were running along smoothly. She could use her defensive capabilities when things went awry.

4:01 I think weapons aren’t actually generated by a gem, remember Bismuth? All the weapons are built separately and given to the gems who would have a good use for it.
Sapphires aren’t thought of as a battle figure, that’s why they don’t have a weapon.
What? Then how would Amethyst have a whip? Why would Jasper be described as coming out of the ground with her helmet already on? Bismuth said she only created the 'material weapons', but it's a pretty common fact that the gem weapons are created by the gems themselves.

-Spinel is an Era 1 gem.
-A theory that another one of Pink Diamonds powers is to rejuvenate gems. The rejuvatator was pink, like yellow diamond’s yellow gem destabilizers, an off shoot of yellows own gem destabilizing power.
- Another theory is pearls and gems close to the diamonds are combat ready and act as body guards. Example Pearl and Spinel, who suppose to be Pink’s play thing, could handle a scythe.

i think white's oil goes into all gems, hence her referencing her light as shining through all of them. this whole thing also makes me wonder about the pink-tinted white diamond we see in the new opening- when she called pink diamond "the part of her that does" (or whatever the exact quote is), i interpreted that as the other diamonds being parts of white that were extracted from her somehow, but that could be totally off. i'm just curious if the new white diamond we saw was maybe somehow a buildup of the oil used to make pink affecting her? just spitballing

It kinda makes sense, We can see from the pictures when pink was made the other diamond were surprised by her especially white, and We can see a drop from a pink diamond, this means that like real life queen of bees, the diamond main function is to be able to reproduce in away, as such the other diamond accepted her even though something is not right with Pink
The problem is that they really don't need colonies if they just need the diamonds for creating more gems

What if pinks powers is like a rejuvenater but instead of putting them all the way back she can take their body back but not their mind (healing power) but she could control how far back their body goes . Kind of like Yellow and gem dystabiliser a gem dystabiliser can poof a gem but for a short time but yellow can poof a gem for a long time. And from pinks power they made a rejuvenater but it is less powerful as pinks power just like yellow and gem dystabiliser
If the creation of amethysts involved blue diamond it would explain why when pink Diamond was “ Shattered “ the amethysts seemed to go to blue Diamond

This theory seems laughable as its already confirmed that all gems can shape shift. The reason we dont see the other Diamonds do it is because, why would they need to? In fact, I doubt Pink Diamond ever shape shifted until Pearl suggested it.
Yellow colour gems do have weaponry because topaz has a mace .And jaspers are a combination of yellow and pink diamond.

Pink was also canonically made after the other diamonds. What if she has some of blue, white, and yellow in her giving her additional abilities.
This is like my favorite theory now. What if it's like... the Diamond's powers are the part of their personalities that handle emotional pain? As in like it's their emotional defenses and also their physical defenses. White Diamond reacts to pain by covering it up and being controlling. Yellow doesn't like to feel her feelings so maybe she's like someone who would rather get angry and project on/tear down others when she's hurt? She destabilizes people. I'm not sure how well it fits with the character, but maybe Blue is the equivalent of someone who guilt-trips when in pain. If White is like her parent, she probably hasn't known much compassion. Some people are understandably starving for empathy but can get a little manipulative about getting it. I don't think some of those people even realize they're being manipulative.
You know how some people mold themselves into whatever kind of person they think you want them to be? I think Pink is like the opposite of that. Sometimes when people come from a situation like hers where no one really seems to love and appreciate you, you learn to love and appreciate yourself but it's not in a healthy way because you don't love your whole self. You have a version of yourself in your mind that's pretty great, and also the version of you on the outside that's made from all of the negative ways you're treated by your family and it's full of shame and anger so you avoid its existence like the plague. You want people to see and interact with only the good version of you in your mind so that's the mask you put forward. If you don't get the right reaction, you change masks a little. You're vying for their reaction. If Pink feels pain maybe she just shifts how she thinks about herself in respect to the situation until she feels relief from it. Feeling guilty about abandoning Spinel? It's cool, just become a literal paragon of empathy. No one blames things on those. If other people don't see painful things about her maybe it's like the pain isn't there at all. She shape-shifted it away.
No, So, White has Mind Control, Yellow has Destabilization, Blue has The power to make people cry, but Pink has the power to Heal, I'm sure they can all shape shift but they choose not to, Pink's power isn't Shape Shifting because most gems can already shape shift, Pinks real power is the power to Heal.

Probably not. Her gem base I don't think can be altered after being created. Kinda like how the ratio of diamond oil is basically like your DNA. Sure it can be healed, but not altered. In theory, if a gem were exposed to a form of radiation to alter their gem base they could gain powers...but be more likely to end up getting corrupted or shattered.

and those alterations were first made by the corrption blast. That, like Danny said, is most likely equivelant to radiation. A good analogy I feel would to be to relate the original blast to getting cancer from a carcinogen and the healing of it to chemotherapy. By normal means the base of the gem can't be altered.
Though OP might be on to something because technically steven has never had to 'heal' an era 2 gem and his healing powers could fix the shapeshifting thing like how steven healed connies eyes, something that no one realized could be fixed so no one thought to try. I think it'd be a nice call back to that episode if that were to happen.
Perhaps white contributes to pearls being submissive. (White’s power being related to being able to modify a gems emotional / mental state at will) Just a thought
I think she's the only diamond who *would* shape-shift, not *could*. All the other diamonds are super obsessed with how perfect they are and I think they'd find shape-shifting totally off the table because why would they need go look different other than changing clothes when they're already perfect.

That's like saying all humans have ten fingers. It's a generalization that doesn't count outliers. They say 'the diamonds aren't like other gems' plenty. She also said that in like episode 6, way before most of these details would have been finalized.

No, as I said in the video most gems would be given drops of pink in order to shape shift, the same way some blue gems get a drop of yellow in order to have weapons. The resource shortage is literally pink diamonds oil, Rebecca Sugar said so herself, so that means that shapeshifting either comes from pink diamond oils, or having a certain quantity of oil regardless of gem color.

I defintiely didn't take that dream as super cannon. That was the first trippy moment in a series of crazy nonsense that was meant to be figurative, not literal. The idea was that no matter how far away yellow was she was still always looking over pinks shoulder. I don't think it is remotely in yellow diamonds personality to extend her neck a couple hundred feet to just check in on pink.
Uh correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought we were basically told that shapeshifting was just a general innate gem ability that all of them can do. Plus, if they could fuse, then why couldn't they be able to shapeshift, aren't they related powers? We saw two green gems fusing, the Jades. We of course saw Lapis fuse. Plus, we don't know what Pearls are made from, could be from all Diamonds or from just White. Pearl can shapeshift.

I think this is untrue (in my opinion) cause Garnet can shape shift, and Garnet is not a member of pinks court, as blue diamond said “how dare you fuse with a member of my court?!”

I address that in the video. Peridot wouldn't be part of her court either, but she indicated that era 1 peridots could shape shift. Pearl even describes alll gems as being able to shape shift. We know for a fact that the resource shortage is a reference to Pink Diamond so why would that effect a peridot (who would mostly be made of blue and yellow) who wasn't even form pink diamonds court, yet she doesn't have shape shifting powers?
The answer would be, as i said, that even gems that aren't part of another gems court might get just a few drops from other diamonds to give them certain abilities like gem weapons or shape shifting.

Ok but I want to know why the diamond’s gems are all different when all the rubies and sapphires and so on have identical gems just on different parts of the body!?

Except for peridot, who explicitly said that era 2 peridots CANNOT shapeshift due to a resource shortage on homeworld. This resource shortage was confirmed by Rebecca Sugar to be a shortage of the oils created by Pink Diamond for gem production. I explain this in the video as well.

I'm kinda wondering if all diamonds have an aura, but Blue is the best at reflecting it. Steven is able to summon an aura onto Yellow and Blue in I think Reunited? So if Blue and Pink both had an aura, why can't Yellow and White? We might've even seen Yellow's in that same scene with Steven. It might be that it's always there internally, but it's weak and doesn't heavily affect others unless the Diamond wants it to.

Garnet can shape-shift, so Sapphire or Ruby can shape-shift. Neither Sapphire or Ruby are created on Earth as a product of Pink Diamond's Colony.
