  • Even though I will have to repaint this car, I had already made this video before I found the paint flaw. I always wanted to try this technique. Removing a run in clear coat using spot putty. it seemed to do the job. Might give you some confidence if you have the same problem.

I never would have thought of that

You can always use a razor blade to get rid of the bulk of the run & then a single wipe of the putty like you'd spread filler. That way the putty is fairly flat & sands easier :)

I have real good luck with just taking a new razor blade and scrape them off holding the blade 90 degrees of the surface. Been doing body work since 1974 so I seldom make runs anymore

Interesting technique. I have never seen this before. I think I will stick with the razor blade. I have had good luck with it in the past.

I'd be worried of missing a 600 scratch. That won't buff out. Its funny how if you cut down a run you always seem to feel it. But I'll keep that in mind if I don't have a new razor blade.

What is pretty amazing is that after a period of time ,months, the runs in clear coat diminish considerably , at least they do in the Texas heat .
I've seen it on several occasions so with this technic they should be completely gone after a period of time .
    Thanks for that tip .

I just hate it when I have the runs..... Interesting method though. Thanks for sharing.

Question- is the spot putty used to make the runs easier to see so you know they are gone or maybe to flatten the panel out so there is less chance of sanding through to the color? Or both? I wasnt clear as to why putty was used in this way. Thx

      @JoDaddysGarage  Před 3 lety +1

Both. With the transition in the panel, it would be easy to break through the clear. The putty helps prevent that.

AWESOMENESS!!! Any soap in your water? I didn't hear you say if you added any. Beautiful work as always.

A little dish soap. I should have mentioned that.

That’s a great tip, does this technique also work on single stage urethane or just clear coats

  • @1otviii

What is the purpose of the putty? Protecting the clear not in the run?

  • @wadechandler5153

So is the spot putty just like a thick guide coat and when it's all gone your run should be too?

nice fix. Thanks for posting. In retrospect would you have gone with the razor blade technique or gone with the spot putty? I need to find your razor technique video......

It seemed to work fine. I could have done a combination of the two.
