Anycubic have developed the Mono M5S, a mid-range 3D printer capable of fast printing 105mm per hour. Not only that, amongst other innovations, it boasts a self-levelling build plate which also possesses resin level detection.
For me the leap from 8K to 12K is the most appealing feature. So the question is, can we see a significant increase in print quality? Here I put the Anycubic Photon Mono M5S to the test.

This is by far the most complete review I've seen so far about the printer on YT. The other videos sound more like an ad for the printer, lol. I ended up pre-ordering the printer with a bottle of the quick resin because the price was too good to resist, plus the features it has are nothing to scoff at specially compared to the competition. Perhaps it might not be as sharp as the D2 or the Mini 8K(s), but compared to other 10" screen models this has the best potential; 19x/24y microns (weird), 1,248 PPI, auto-leveling, decent build area, etc.

It Seems that I've entered the market at a weird time in terms of technology updates. (A jump to 12k and not 16k, Phrozen has yet to come up with their 18 or less pixel size - but elegoo did, Rectangular pixels*?* etc’) As I saw here, M5s is definitely a better choice then saturn 3, but should I go for it or instead choose the mighty 8k? ❤

I think Anycubic ran the horses in front of the wagon. Very excited to release a printer that could work better.
They make a point of having more “Ultra Definition” in the name, but actually the impressions are not that good.
Another thing too: They should improve 100% the online service, because I really like the brand but I'm changing to phrozen precisely because of the after sales and quality of service that Anycubic offers.
They seem to serve you unwillingly, as if they were doing you a favor, when in fact they could be retaining customers.
I'm from Brazil, where there are 220 million consumers… The 3D market here is starting now, if companies are smart and offer good service, they'll be very happy… Anycubic, with its rather decadent service, misses an incredible opportunity.

I've been developing some resin printed mini chainmail, under 3mm in outer diamiter, it's the sort of thing that bloom affects hugely because the rings stick, this is the limiting factor when printing them, I have got them to print reliably on my saturn 1 despite having a bad screen that over exposes in the middle but I'd love to see how much smaller they can get with either high res LCD printers like this or a DLP printer like the D2, do you still have the D2? I think this would be a great way to see the differences between the two, to see if low res DLP is sharper than higher res LCD.
If you are interested let me know if you want to print it and I will send you the files, I will reply to this comment with a link to a page with some photos and info on it (rather than adding the link in this comment because youtube likes to delete comments with links). It's dependent on the screen size. 8k at 15" isn't great. People really need to talk in just the xy pixel size. The 19um by 24um is a bit of a snafu, that still probably makes it on par with the 7" 22um XY of the SM8K. Doing so out of a 10.1" screen just makes it better.

    • @robguyatt9602
      @robguyatt9602 Před rokem

It annoys me that people only talk in terms of the numbers 2, 4, 6, 8 and now 12K. It is totally meaningless to talk of the number of pixels in isolation. The real number is the size of the pixel not how many there are. You're being conned by the marketing people. At least the headline here mentions the pixel size. Although even that is misleading. The actual pixel size of this machine is 24 x 19 microns. Averaged, that is the same size as the Phrozen Mini 8K 22 micron pixel size. So you say you don't need more than 8K. Should a printer that has a 15" screen still only be 8K? And what are the reasons more than 8K gives diminishing returns? Give me some science behind that claim. Of course, there can't be without referring to pixel size instead of the number of pixels.

I think they think that the micron pixel size on the 10 inch 8k stay the same as on the 6 inch 8k, but then it would become a 12k or something similar.
I've pre-ordered the MK5 because I could get it for 530 dollar with a wash and cure station included, so it was the cheapest combo for someone who wants to upgrade from a Mars 2 Pro. Only thing I fear is that the quality shown in this video, seems worse than what my 2k Mars 2 Pro now can print...

Any message from Anycubic if the force detection system will be improved afterwards? I mean as far as I understand it, the hardware is there only the software is not at its full potential.. i mean autoleveling is very nice, but i think it could even detect the release time from the fep, automatically decrease the lift time!

Well i can give you an inside "Eng eletronics" view on the market. When you talk about monochromatic LCD panels what people outside the eng view say is pixels, but we actually call it polarization zone which is a place with liquid crystal ( a non conductive material or dielectric material) that get influenced by the EMI from two electrodes plates.
So WTF this means, it means that i need enough EMI and voltage to rearrange the liquid crystal in a twisted nematic direction.
Cool and what? Well here things get more technical (Yes, they can), but we need to things here to make pixels smaller on LCD. We need higher voltage but we wil get a more thick display (and in this case we don't want this) or better LC (Other type of LC or more pure it depends on). This kind of things can get real expansive after some point and the solution is to get more area of electrode in the shape of rectangles.
Actually rectangles pixels are more common than we thinks tube TVs had a rectangles shaped pixels but since our eyes can't see we rarely notice

I have been going down the rabbit hole of 3d printer research. No hands on, just reading and watching a plethora of articles, so perhaps I am naive, but at this point I must say, I am leaning much more toward the Saturn 3 Ultra. The print height difference is substantial, and though printing that high may be very rare, as I am mostly in the 5e space, the fact is it can print 2" taller when/if needed. There is also the ability to just print to it wirelessly from my PC with ease vs having to deal with hosted site, phone apps etc - a painful thought. The accessory inclusions and quality seem to lean in favour of the Saturn too. All the noted for only a $20 difference currently. For my personal preferences, the advantages of the M5s are not as notable - plate leveling is almost a once and done thing or very rare so that is not a draw, the resin level detection is nice, but not that important to me. That failure detection feature though - that piques my interest. I can envision my frustration on walking away from a 4hr+ print and coming back to a failure.

I mean I bought a photon mono 4k a year ago and I never touched the build plate since the first print! At the end you also showed that 12k isn't a real improvment compared to 8k resolution, so as you said, it is a good printer with medium build volume, but after your review I am convinced that it is not the big step foward I expected... So now I 'm waiting for Saturn 3 ultra launch, I think there will be no real innovation from Elegoo, but I was told that after-sale service is far better at Elegoo than Anycubic, and for me on expensive printers like these it is important.

Just add the settings of one of those printers in your slicer of choice and see how much more / bigger models you can put on it. Honestly, printers bigger than that (Elegoo Jupiter, Phrozen Mega 8K, Peopoly Phenom) are another kind of beast altogether in terms of resin consumption, post processing equipment needed or printing speed. Bigger plate means a bigger height to allow complete retraction each time the plate leaves the FEP. It also means a lower print definition, from 50 to 43 microns, closer to what we were able to do with small printers 5 years ago. And they're closer to industrial printers with a 2K+ price to match... But if you really need 30x20x40cm prints, they're the tool to use.

Is it even worth upgrading from my Phrozen Sonic Mini 8K?

Using pixel resolution is not a good way of judging the potential print quality of a printer, the xy micron size is far better as that adds the screen size in to the equation, where as straight x y resolution does not (8k looks great on a small printer, but would look nowhere nears as good as the 12k on this one due to size of screen and print bed). As a DLP user, this does not worry me, I am just waiting for a good mid sized DLP (Hopefully with load sensors etc) I'll stick with my D2 for now.

I almost jumped on the early bird for this printer when it was $399 because of the auto levelling and fast print speed, but with no real reviews I decided to wait, it's up to $499 now so probably just going to skip it. But I hope we see more consumer printers with features like auto levelling and maybe heated vats, also higher speeds are definitely a plus. Even though I have a small resin 3D printer, I feel like I'm not using it all that much because as someone who doesn't have a lot of free time I spend too much time doing the fiddly stuff.

Where Anycubic leads, others usually follow. I think Force Detection is here to stay and will become a must-have soon 😁

Great review im glad you tell it how it is, those "smart" features about the detecting the z motor is plugged in.. pointless.
Im very keen to see the athena review. I wonder how it would go with a different fep material like anycubic is using.

There are some bells and whistles here it's true, but it's genuinely not a bad printer. I do like it.
But like you, I'm excited by the technology Athena represents and, in fairness, Anycubic have grasped upon as well.

The force detection stuff looks great, but on the subject of the increased layer height, my FDM printer (Ender 3 V2 with some upgrades to springs, extruder etc) through a 0.4mm nozzle can manage a higher Z resolution than 0.1mm (0.8mm), seems like quite the sacrifice to make in the pursuit of faster prints but perhaps I'm missing something?

Z is the limiting factors. We're going great with XY, but Z seems to be a puzzlers. One day soon some bright spark will do it 😁

If you compare something that has couple of walls, and infill and in similar size - fdm printer prints take ages at sub 0.1mm layers.
This is much faster than probably any fdm at this build volume.

At this point we're just trading longer slicing times due to increased resolution for an increase in quality so negligible it might as well not exist
